Title: Beck writes song named after microtonal pioneer....
Post by: Be My Head on 22 Nov 2009, 03:11
...and possibly unintentionally sicks a raving pack of hipsters on great music and pisses off the people who listened before?

It remains to be seen...

But such comments as "The biggest winner in this whole fake-feud is Harry Partch. Think of how many people are going to check out his music now." aren't very hopeful. Especially that they seemingly don't realize Harry Partch is dead.

To add some context to this:

Radiohead released a song titled after and and dedicated to WW1 veteran Harry Patch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Patch). Matt Friedberg from The Fiery Furnaces had a bad twinky and wrote a dang confusing post accusing Radiohead of trying to gain cred points by referencing avant garde composer and musician  Harry Partch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Partch). After no response from Radiohead he wrote another confusing post about how he had not been mistaken but had instead been joking or intentionally misleading when he wrote his earlier post. In his last line he (for some reason) mentioned that he really wanted to diss Beck instead of Radiohead but was afraid of the church of scientology.
Beck's new song is probably his retort.

That guy from the fiery furnaces sounds like a right berk.
He's basically accusing artists of being a bit pretentious in the most pretentious way possible.

Here is a side of the "story" that makes Matthew Friedberger not look like such a dick:

Didn't this start with an interview somehow? He did write two very confusing blog posts, both of which can be boiled down to "Matt Friedberg is a tool" and somehow come off as only tangentially related to the Radiohead tiff.

I believe he was being interviewed when he first voiced his opinion.

Be My Head, I'm pretty sure that people who listen to Beck won't be lining up for Chromalodeon lessons.

Wow, Friedberger really doesn't roll with the punches very well at all.
