I'm not sure how big our Jewish community is here, but Hanukkah is easily one of my favorite holidays. It has delicious foods, and it the only winter holiday I can really get behind. I'm making latkes right now to celebrate. Anybody else have any special plans? Anybody know any good recipes?

My roommate's girlfriend made latkes for all of us! They were delicious. We also just lit the menorah!
Yay hannukah!
-
Fuckin' Jews.
-
Fuck you, whitey.

"They don't want the hipsters in their neighborhood," he said. "It's like in Howard Beach back in the day when they didn't want black people in the neighborhood."
Yeah it's exactly like that. Nice work fella, fight the power.
-
That quote stuck out for me, too. It's pretty awesome, except that I would much rather have black people in my neighborhood than hipsters.
-
So yeah we found our menorahs the day after Hanukkah started. Whatever, we aren't too serious about it anyway.
-
I suppose I can't give you a hard time since this is the first time I've pulled my menorah out of storage in about 5 years.
-
We celebrated by making Latkes today! and by celebrated I mean that we made latkes and then coincidentally it was also Hanukkah today.
-
What foods are associated with Hannukah? What are they like are they rich or delicate and sweet or savoury?
-
Chocolate coins for one.

Fuck you, whitey.
Jews are whitey.
Unless you're a nazi.

Me and my friends played dreidel for an hour and a half yesterday. An hour and a half is too long to be playing dreidel when you are 19.
We broke two dreidels in the process (and discovered that one happened to be weighted towards almost always giving gimel, and another was weighted towards shin).
There was also a Latka and Vodka party that I passed on going to because of finals and a paper I gotta write.
(I of course would have gone only for the Latkas

So I'm a mutt who was raised in a mostly psuedo-bootleg-vanilla-Christiany household-- except when my Grandmother was around and then we were an 'interfaith' family. By that, of course, I mean I am completely Agnostic and have ignored about half of what Leviticus says I should do with my life, and neither of my parents are particularly religious either. Then I married a no-faith-but-from-a-sorta-Christian-background woman. So honestly, right now there's a Christmas tree in my house and stockings on the mantle.
About the only time I get to acknowledge that my Great Grandmother got the fuck out of Poland and came to America is when the Jews at work --and there are a bunch of them (us?) --periodically "claim" me. Also, about two years ago my oldest child got really interested in having a fancy ethnic background so tried doing Hanukkah and played dreidel and talked about the things I remember from when I was a kid and my Grandmother would do her best to teach me to be a Jew.
Cliff's Notes: I'm a really bad Jew, but if I ever find faith, it's what I'll gravitate towards I think.
-
In the centre of Oxford, just next to the Christmas tree, there's a twelve-foot high menorah made out of drain pipes painted gold with a "Happy Hanukkah" sign hanging from it. It looks a bit self conscious.
-
How much money did you win/lose?
-
Well, we were playing with the chocolate gelt. We each bought a small bag of 6 coins to bet with for about $2. In the end I had only 3 pieces of chocolate left, so I lost about a dollar. (at one point in the evening I had 17 pieces :D)
If we did use coins, they would have been pennies, since we're poor college kids.

I looked latkes up, sounds very much like rosti (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R%C3%B6sti)?
-
That sounds pretty close, though rosti sound more like hash browns (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hashbrowns) than potato pancakes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potato_pancakes). We used potatoes, grated onions, eggs, and flour in ours. Then topped with sour cream + sugar or apple sauce.
-
Holy hell I am making latkes when I get home. I never knew what they were.
-
Latkes! I read an awesome book about those once!
