Tal Wilkenfeld
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tal_Wilkenfeld
Heard first of her here as she was featured on a transeuropean Artist TV Channel (ARTE) tonight. She was playing together with Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page and some european Jazz Artists... hella groovy.

I think you picked a bad picture.
-
I bet she has a terrible O-face.
Just sayin'.
-
durrrrrr
-
Ah yes, talented bass players with a penchant for Jazz fusion, the worlds premier source of awesome music.
-
Man, Geoffry Keezer is playing fusion now? Fuck. Man, I have some recordings of him rocking badass McCoy Tyner-type shit.
-
Guess now I know why guitars have that curve in the top there. Ergonomic!
-
That explains why men usually play it slung way low.
-
Wasn't she playing on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25th Anniversary show?
-
I think you picked some bad music.
-
It does sound like music that would be played in a supermarket or an elevator.
-
What bassist-led musical endeavours are there that don't make music that's utterly risible?
The only names that pop into my head are Jah Wobble and Bill Laswell.
-
ALthough thEy May not be all that comMon, I think that if you were to trY, you could thinK of other performIng groups that wouLd Manage to fIt thoSe criTERia.
-
Khar, sometimes you're right and sometimes you're wrong. This time you're wrong (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qofA8N3xSUQ&feature=PlayList&p=971B8D8CFB2BFB09&index=5).

MOTHERFUCKER
-
I was asking for suggestions. Also DFA 1979 use the bass instead of a guitar*, similiarly Motorhead is a band where the bassist is the singer and lyricist. I think we all really know the kind of groups I meant
*and they suck.
-
Also when you said bass you meant the fish right? And there are no good bands fronted by a dude playing a fish.
Dang.
Good point.
-
No, I meant bands that are bassists vanity projects and which centre around the specific individual musical qualities of the bass guitar.
-
This is all an elaborate ploy to bash Primus isn't it.
-
Squarepusher's rad guys.

possibly.
-

John Patitucci, Dave Holland (one of my favorite groups, period), Charles Mingus and depending on your feeling, Jaco Pastorious (I am a passing Jaco fan).
Don't forget about Serge Koussevitzky.
ETA: Thanks to this thread, I have been listening to McCoy Tyner all night. Maybe this is a good thing.

NO
-
Hey, man! Actually, I'd say Wings fits the definition of risible fairly perfectly. Next to it in the dictionary, there should be that picture.
-
OM
Yes.

wings ruled macca rules dfa1979 owned jazz fusion sucks forever
-
also you herbs forgot dianogah
-
you're ALSO forgetting lightning bolt although the instrument used in lightning bolt is barely a bass
-
And more importantly, Man Is The Bastard.
-
Oh God what the hell did those bastards do to Immigrant Song and why is Jimmy just standing there and letting them do it
-
That is the least terrible cover of Immigrant Song that I've heard. True story.
Oh shit, I just noticed that she plays bass the way I used to before that gave me tendonitis. Why does playing bass hurt me so much?
-
Because it loves you. It's just afraid to express that love. It's OK, sunglasses look good on you.
-

fIREHOSE

also you herbs forgot dianogah
Also Girls Against Boys.
there's a grand tradition of canadian drum-and-bass duos that i didn't even begin to address to be honest
-
oh yeah and BIG BUSINESS
-
It has to be said again that DFA 1979 and GVB are bands which use bass guitar instead of guitar, not bassist led self centred projects in the same way that Tortoise is not the same as the Ginger Baker trio.
On an additional note, Paul played guitar in Wings. Wings also sucks.
-
i'm hesitant to say that those bands were too lazy to get real guitars or whatever
-
Kathy Foster is pretty good.
-
Kathy Foster is pretty good.
This guy knows what's up.
-
Michelle Mae is also pretty awesome.
-
What about Mrs. Doombilly?
-
No Wings fans here?
You can't see me right now but I am giving you the finger so hard
-
Oh yeah, should probably mention Carol Kaye (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carol_Kaye) who is near enough certainly the most recorded bass player of all time.

Kathy Foster is pretty good.
Kathy Foster once pushed my girlfriend into a Red Bull machine.
-
Did she push her all the way in, or just bounce her off the exterior?
-
Off the exterior, but putting a dent into the front of it.
-
