Title: Marigirl is not a weirdo
Post by: Is it cold in here? on 23 Dec 2009, 16:01
Ladies play longer on average than dudes and are more likely to be at the extreme end of gaming time:

So Purplepants is a trend setter, or trend follower, or something.

The results were from a survey of EverCrack users, and it's possible that other MMORPGs have different demographics.

I've observed the biggest demographic difference between girl gamers and guy gamers is that guy gamers care more about winning whereas girl gamers like the social aspect and atmosphere of the game more.  Plus guy gamers are more likely to like more challenging games.

If somebody is lonely enough that gaming is their only real social outlet, I can definitely see logging huge amounts of hours.

Wait, the *average* gamer logs 27 hours a week?!  Back when I had no job and nothing to do all day, I maybe played that much when I had a new game I was really excited about, but most of the time it was more around half that.  And now that I do have a job it varies between 15 and 0 hours a week, depending on how busy I am.  I don't understand how anyone could play the same game that much and not get bored of it.

Since the survey was of people who were logged in at the time, it probably missed a lot of casual gamers (this is called sample bias, and it's a common mistake).

Does Marigirl strike people as into the social side, or the competitive side? Somehow I got an "in to win" vibe from her but I can't remember anything from the strip to confirm that. Closest was her complaints about the other women in her guild.

Anyone who says she is is one him/herself

Marigirl's reactions to most things are pretty normal, she's got normal urges, and her being a hardcore gamer is hardly unique.

To us non-gamers (or former gamers who found something "better" to do with life), gamers are weirdos.

Nongamers can't understand them.

Former gamers find them understandable, but wonder why they haven't found something better yet.

I thnk Angus is a non-gamer, and so yes, Marigold is a weirdo shut-in (can't argue the second point)!

If someone doesn't understand introversion (and/or being anti-social, which there is nothing wrong with it), then it's understandable they would call Marigold weird.

Besides, Mari's just a hardcore gamer.  Nothing weird about it.  Not to mention, some people just don't want to be around other people, either because they're shy or they don't like people in general.

She was wearing an NGE shirt. That makes her weird.

Weird is when you have a T-shirt that says "OK, you've read my T-shirt. That's enough social interaction".

I've had stretches where I played twelve hours a day, always going to bed two hours later than the day before.
Although, admittedly, that was holidays and it was only for a few weeks at a time. But 27 hours a week with (hopefully) a job barely leaves time for eating.

But yeah, the survey begs the question of how a hardcore gamer or gamer is defined. It's definitely not average for all players of online computer games, and it's not like there's a strict divide between occasional player/gamer and gamer/hardcore gamer.

As for the OT, we're a bunch of people posting anonymously on an electronic medium so other anonymous people can read our statements. Weird, huh?

I spent 15 hours one day getting my warrior in WoW from the start of lvl 76 to lvl 79.  Would've done it an hour or two sooner had I not taken breaks to go run instances.

Then again having maxed out rested state helped a lot.

But everyone is a weirdo. Don't cast the first stone, and all that...
