As far as brand goes, Canon and Nikon are the most reputable and have been making cameras for the longest.
Pentax and Olympus are equally good at point-and-shoot cameras, and are specialist camera brands. As long as you stick to these brands, you're not likely to go very wrong.
You should look for and compare these specifications and pick the combination you like best:
Megapixels - 7-10 is pretty good for everyday use
Zoom - between 3-5x is pretty much standard for your price range i think.
Memory - i would recommend brand that use SD memory because it's the most widespread/compatible, but it hardly matters because most cameras are USB compatible
Automatic / Manual settings - you can cameras with fully manual settings, lots of personalised settings (macro, portrait, night photos etc) or ones with less, if you're not going to be fussy.
Anti-shake - most brands have some sort of anti-shake system, some work, some don't. I'm not sure about the brands you've suggested. I guess this is something which you have to try for yourself.
I have been using a Canon IXUS and it's served me very well over the years.

Against my will, I found myself laughing at this part with the thread title in mind.

I don't know much about cameras, but when I bought mine some years ago and when my sister bought hers some days ago, they said we should take one by Sony or Nikon because they have the best lenses.
-
I have two Pentax cameras, but they are both SLRs. One is a K10D digital, and I love it. It has shake reduction built into the camera body itself, as opposed to Nikon and Canon SLRs, where to get sake reduction you have to buy lenses with it built in (makes those lenses more expensive) The other is an MX (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentax_MX), a delightful little 1970s film camera that used to belong to my father. I love both of these cameras. Pentax was founded in 1919 making spectacle lenses and started making camera lenses in 1938, so like Nikon and Canon, it's very venerable company, but it merged with Hoya (another optical company) in 2008. Pentax's entry-level SLRs seem to have more features than the equivalents from Canon and Nikon.
I have never used a Pentax point-and-shoot. I have a Canon PowerShot SD550 (I believe this is the same line that is called IXUS everywhere but the US) that is quite good, although their P&S cameras have gotten even better since I bought it. I'm happy with it, and I think for P&S I will stick with Canon. My previous P&S was a Canon also. I would recommend Canon P&S cameras to my friends without reservation.

My gf got a Nikon D90 for Xmas and it is really excellent. I helped her research DSLR's before she got this and I can confidently recommend it. Example pics of my cock will be forthcoming.

Or hey if you are looking at point-and-shoot cameras you could probably do way worse than this sexy beast (http://www.cameraporn.net/2009/06/22/3-reasons-i-love-the-leica-d-lux-4/)

Anti-shake
in camera terminology, look for one that's got an optical image stabilizer.
if you need to take really clear images on a budget, point and shoot is probably the way to go, as i've found even most cheap digital SLRs don't come with an image-stabilizing lens and you'll most likely have to make that purchase separately.

I feel that we all have been skirting around the most important question, perhaps for decency, perhaps for our own mental well-being, but I am afraid that I can no longer resist asking the obvious question: why all this trouble for a chicken?

Good luck getting the Polaroid film.

It's a guy fucking a tree thinking he's fucking a bucket but when he fucks the tree it hits a small bird inside and the bird is uncomfortable about it, so he tries to escape, but he just ends up sitting on the penis of the guy who is fucking the tree.
-
And the guy has a fursuit on and the bird has a medal from some sort of contest?
-
No the guy is third cousin to Yacko, Whacko, and Dot of Animaniacs fame and I do not really know what is going on with that thing on the birds neck I have never noticed it before.
-
Perchance it is representative of the waddle commonly found on birds such as the rooster or mighty turkey.

And what's with that penis? A ball with a spiral on a stick?
-
My penis has a waddle, but doesnt have any spirals.
Should I go see a doctor?
-
No, you should come here.
