and sorry but Té are more interesting and often better than Mono.

WEG isn't really post-rock and if you give it a listen expecting something along the same lines as MONO (come on people, their name is all in caps) or Té you will be disappointed. That being said he's still a pretty cool musician and worth listening to. I do think that MONO is the gold standard, "You Are There" being an especially brilliant album, but the other stuff mentioned in this thread is all good too. Can't think of any others at the moment....
-
RURURU
that's all you neeed
-
i just checked the MF thread and the old link in there is still active. just search rururu and you should find it. it's awesome.

this is why "post-rock" is a horrible label. it doesn't have to only mean "music that sounds like GY!BE did". in fact, it SHOULDN'T mean that because it would be a micro-micro-genre.
for instance Té actually do not sound very much like MONO. Meanwhile Back In Communist Russia doesn't really sound like A Silver Mt. Zion. etc.
hell even ASMZ don't sound like ASMZ. their most recent album sounds nothing at all like their first two, and isn't all that similar to their third and fourth either.
-
also guys lite is staight up math rock or whatever.
like post rock is mono. sgt. is acceptable too. even te ill go for. WEG rules too i guess.
-
mono's kind of boring though.
like there is way too much glockenspiel in my post-rock thankyouverymuch.
-
try sgt then
-
rururu?
RURURU!
...RuRuRu...

Truth.
Although post rock is completely pathetic when put up against hardcore, so I may have a touch of bias on that one.
They're still not that good at it anyway though.

And again, this is why the label is ridiculous. When I first heard the term in the 90's it was applied to anyone who used unconventional song structures, unconventional time signatures, and unconventional chord structures. In essence- bands that lacked the 4/4, barre chord, verse/chorus/verse/bridge/verse/chorus structure, but retained the tools of rock- guitar, bass, drums. As a result, bands like Shiner, Jawbox, and Hum frequently got put into the "Post Rock" category. At some point, someone decided all post-rock largely lacked vocals and was "atmospheric," and therefore bands like "Lite" don't apply, while bands like Mono do. And yet, no one knows what to do with Mogwai, which occassionally has vocals, or Russian Circles, which has no vocals or traditional song structure, but is rarely "atmospheric".
This is what Wittgenstein calls the "family problem," which makes labelling seriously difficult and eventually meaningless. It goes something like this- I have a band with charcteristics A + B that I call "post rock," a band with characteristics B + C that I call "post rock," and a band with characteristics C + D that I call "post rock". The first band and the second band are related by characteristic "B," so we easily call them both post-rock, and the second band and the last band are related by characteristic "C" so we easily call them post-rock. But, the last band and the first band don't have anything in common, other than their shared relationship to the second band. As a result, if my familiarity with the term "post rock" is only with the third band, I would deny that the label applies to the first band. If my familiarity is with the second band as post rock, I would be comfortable applying the label to all three bands, etc.
And so- labelling music, while somewhat helpful for finding reference points, isn't really "descriptive" in a definitive sense of anything.
-
I don't know anyone who uses the term to be descriptive per se. The reason I brought it up was that most people I know at this point, when referring to post-rock, are referring to bands that sound more or less like EitS, for example. When someone asks for post-rock recommendations, this is the sound I tend to assume they're referring to so I think it's important to point out that a musician like WEG, while possibly post-rock in the original sense of the word, does not sound like the post-rock they're probably thinking of since that sound has by now become the standard one attached to that word. Of course, we'd all be better off if no one used 'post-rock' anymore but I doubt that'll happen.
-
okay this is the way i see it.
reverb and tremolo picking and long boring slow songs are post rock.
lite is straight up math rock no doubt.
also i dunno what yr on russian circles is plenty spacy.

The point is, that's the way you see the label properly applied, whereas someone else may not. For instance- do Russian Circles play long, boring, slow songs? I'll give you that the songs are long, and have some slower parts, but its not boring and rarely is a song slow throughout. Part of their dynamics revolves around the interplay between faster and slower parts. And, not all "post rock" bands use tremolo picking (Mogwai for example). Again, I think the label isn't very useful. It would be better to say "recommend bands that sound similar to Explosions in the Sky," etc. Then we would be talking about music instead of debating semantics.
-
man when was the last time you listened to mogwai (they do tremolo pick trust me)
this is the silliest conversation
-
I'd say Russian-Circles is post-metal? Cos uh, they're metal, with sludge+hardcore influences as well as the whole instrumental+atmospheric thing. Basically any bands that have pretty strong links back to Isis and/or Neurosis=post-metal
-
Post metal is just sludge anyway.
-
Experimental Sludge///Sludge with Clean Guitar///Sludge with philosophy///
-
Neurosis=post-metal
Is that what they are classified as? I've listened to one of their albums and had no idea what genre to put it under. I'm generally not too very picky about particular genres (I mean, geez, I have like 3,500 songs under just 'rock') but that I had no idea.
-
what about sludge core guys?

go go fall out boy
-
i heard from a guy that a guy that my friend knows that interpol rules
-
what about sludge core guys?
What about thrashcore?
Actually, wouldn't that be crossover? That analogy didn't work so well.
I guess I could see where you would get the idea that post-metal is sludge, but if it is sludge, it is sludge with a lot of the punk influence taken out of it, more relaxed and sprawling than sludge normally is.
-
No, thrashcore is hardcore that's really fast but not very metallic or too big on low end, so different from grindcore or powerviolence. Think "thrashing it out" not "thrash metal" and bands like Vitamin X, Voorhees, D.S.-13, Lärm, What Happens Next? etc. It's basically the best musical formula of all time, I will take generic thrashcore over a good example of almost any style of music 90% of the time.
I think a good rule of thumb for working out if a post-metal band could be considered sludge would be "does this sound insufferably wimpy when played after Iron Monkey and Corrupted?" Sludge needs to be dirty. So Snowblood or Neurosis cut the mustard, Isis? Not so much.
-
Pretty much!
Like its cousin post-rock, it's somewhat of a catch-all, particularly for people not familiar with the bands labeled as such, but if you're into it you can pretty much tell instinctively what should and shouldn't get that label.
-
3nd, Eksperimentoj, Funanori, Heaven in Her Arms (similar to Envy), Lostage, Miimi,
Avengers in Sci-Fi are also ace, but not completely post-rock.

I haven't missed a MONO tour in three years and I don't plan on starting now, dammit! I'll be seeing them in NYC for sure and maybe Philly. I kinda like how they've been playing the same moderately/small sized venues for a long time now.
