Holy fucking shit
(http://www.metalsucks.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/atpny.jpg)
Seriously considering rearranging my U.S trip in order to be in NY for this
-
Stooges playing Raw Power? I'm intrigued and aroused.
-
Incidentally I assumed that the Stooges were gonna call it quits after Ron Asheton passed away.
So sayeth the Wiki:
In a May 2009 interview, Pop announced his plans to join with Watt, Scott Asheton, Mackay and former guitarist James Williamson and perform Raw Power as "Iggy and the Stooges", with an openness to future projects with this lineup.[18][19] Pop stated that "although 'the Stooges' died with Ron Asheton, there is still 'Iggy and the Stooges'".[20
This kind of made me say "eww"
-
Oh SHIT. I may have to do this.
I'd say last year's was better, cos Boris played Flood in it's entirety, but then Deerhoof played.

While I feel to an extent this isn't fair on Ron's memory, at the same time Ron was hugely marginalised in the 'Iggy and the...' line-up in the first place. So having James back in on guitar actually sort of makes sense, it's just an extremely morbid sense.
-
Ugh, two hundred and fifty fucking dollars for tickets?
No thanks. I've changed my mind.
-
It's ATP. What the fuck did you expect?
God I'm still so down for this.
-
I've got stuff to do, man. Guitars to buy and build. Jobs to get, moving out and getting my own place.
-
Where are you moving out to?
-
Probably staying in town for the time being, sadly.
-
Rent in Boston is $500 f you are willing to have a roommate. How much cheaper could it possibly be?
-
Yeah, about the same.
Dogg, maybe we should get a place down there together or something.
-
Shit, sounds good to me.
But lets not derail this thread anymore.
I think I'm going to start a thread about moving out soon.
-
God I'm still so down for this.
I'm planing to go this year. I'll be a civilian by then and I've saved up just enough to get me there. It's a bitch to find accommodations but I guess it'll work out eventually.
Also, I saw the Stooges with Ron Asheton and Mike Watt a couple of years ago and it was probably the best concert I've ever been to.
-
The F4 inspired poster is pretty cool.

While I saw the logic in it from the start, it still strikes me as a bit of a semantic wriggle, claiming that you can't have "The Stooges" without Ron, but you can have "Iggy and". I guess it depends on whether or not you personally define "The Stooges" and "Iggy and the Stooges" as separate entities. Honestly if they'd never said Ron was irreplaceable I probably wouldn't have a problem. And of course it's not enough of a problem to not make seeing them an extremely inviting prospect, particularly seeing as I didn't see the Asheton lineup when they played at the Big Day Out three years ago (another one of those situations where I only got into the band after they'd been, natch)
Of course one might find similar problems with the reunion of Sleep, what with supposed tension between Al Cisneros and Chris Hakius after the latter's departure from Om.
-
Scott Asheton's still alive, and he's still hungry. He was pretty much the only good thing about The Weirdness, if there was a good thing about it. If he's okay with it I am. Besides, I think Williamson gets short shrift in general, given his reputation as a supposed pretender to Ron Asheton's throne. He's a pretty good guitarist.
-
ugh, why are ATP tickets always so expensive (I know why, but it's still upsetting cause I don't have that money)

The opening solo on "Search and Destroy" makes me smile every time

It is just semantics, but I still definitely consider 'Iggy and the' to be basically a separate entity. Different name, different line-up, different band; if only one of those was true then I'd reconsider. Three of the members were the same, yes, but Ron was reluctantly playing bass and as such it was virtually pointless him being involved at all. That album was not really about him, but Iggy and Williamson. If Ron had played guitar on the album and they'd replaced him with an unknown entity, I'd be less understanding.
-
Is Matt Groening curating the NY one too, or just the UK one? He's got some good acts over there.
-
The Simpsons guy?
-
Apparently!
Beats Mike Patton. But I guess you could get like, Roger Ailes and it would be a step up from Mike Patton.
-
Yep
(http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/4148/ui2ikf3066bab77viewattt.jpg)
The line-up so far looks like this with far more to be confirmed:
IGGY & THE STOOGES / THE XX / COCO ROSIE / BUILT TO SPILL / JAMES CHANCE AND LES CONTORTIONS / PANDA BEAR / DEERHUNTER / DANIEL JOHNSTON / THE RESIDENTS / BOREDOMS performing Boadrum / THE RAINCOATS / BROADCAST / THEE OH SEES / JUANA MOLINA / LIGHTNING DUST / KONONO N°1 / TOUMANI DIABATE / DANIELSON / JAMES BLACKSHAW / AMADOU AND MARIAM / PONYTAIL / SHONEN KNIFE / RUINS (SOLO) / VIV ALBERTINE'S LIMERENCE / ANNI ROSSI
-
Yeah I guess that's a good lineup if you like indie rock or something
HEY GUYS
HEY GUYS
I JUST SENT AWAY MY $$$ FOR THE TICKETS
WHO'S GONNA COME WITH
-
But where are we going to stay?
-
I'm looking at getting accommodation either at a Howard Johnson in Liberty, (http://maps.google.com.au/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=2067+State+Route+52,+Liberty,+NY+12754-2235,+United+States+(Howard+Johnson)&daddr=Kutsher+RoadQuickway+Exit+105B,+Monticello,+NY+12701,+USA+(Kutsher%27s+Country+Club)&geocode=FVigfQIdxrmL-yGuaPZJ8U71OSk7mxh0WbzciTG5adiQM0f0fQ%3BFUJLfAIdxHOM-yHjJU-XfQDyqQ&hl=en&mra=ls&sll=41.744935,-74.70876&sspn=0.117064,0.308647&ie=UTF8&z=12) or a Day's Inn in Wurtsboro (http://maps.google.com.au/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=21+Perron+Drive,+Wurtsboro,+NY+12790,+United+States+(Days+Inn+Wurtsboro)&daddr=Kutsher+RoadQuickway+Exit+105B,+Monticello,+NY+12701,+USA+(Kutsher%27s+Country+Club)&geocode=Cd8Hw1UPalgOFeRJegIdcD6P-yGSxt9YF4-tTA%3BFUJLfAIdxHOM-yHjJU-XfQDyqQ&hl=en&mra=pe&mrcr=0&sll=41.482418,-74.313113&sspn=0.940327,2.469177&ie=UTF8&z=11), both of which cost US$55/night and are about 15/20 minutes drive away from Kutsher's Country Club, where the fest is being held (the links take you to Google Maps directions from the respective accommodation to Kutsher's).
There is also a campground (http://maps.google.com.au/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Fraser+Road+%26+Bailey+Rd,+Kiamesha+Lake,+NY+12751,+United+States+(All+Seasons+Campsite)&daddr=Kutsher+RoadQuickway+Exit+105B,+Monticello,+NY+12701,+USA+(Kutsher%27s+Country+Club)&geocode=Cf0zbTIqmLYeFZkOfAIdwZuM-yFGBRhuMS8_Jw%3BFUJLfAIdxHOM-yHjJU-XfQDyqQ&hl=en&mra=pe&mrcr=0&sll=41.378569,-74.715969&sspn=0.941819,2.469177&ie=UTF8&ll=41.68804,-74.668064&spn=0.058584,0.154324&z=13) that the ATP site recommended, which is $25/night and 4 minutes drive/32 minutes walk from Kutsher's, if you didn't mind roughing it.
-
Roughing it is fine by me. I'm pretty sure they have a few of 4-5 person rooms still available at Kutsher's. There's also The Raleigh hotel although I've been warned about staying there.
Meanwhile I'm trying to find a few more people who'd go with me but nobody's into it as much as I am.
I need to set a few more things straight (tickets to new york, the grant money I'm supposed to get in July) but right now I'm 90% sure I'm going.
-
I'm mad jealous.
I've got to get to an ATP before I die.
Maybe if I start saving now I can go in 2011.
-

The Kutsher's and Raleigh deals provided through ATP are a fucking rort, there's no way I'm going with that. US$150 per person for three nights. For the "inconvenience" of having to drive 15 minutes each way there's the two places I found for $165 for three nights, between two, not to mention the camping ground. It just doesn't really make sense to me. Not to mention having to have between 3-7 people in a room. No thanks.
Retrospectre, hopefully they'll keep having ATP's in Aus (like the Nick Cave one last year) so at least you won't have to fly halfway round the world for it, just the other side of the country.
-
I don't think ATP Australia made much money though so it might be the last one we see for quite some time.

I guess you're right. Look's like I might have to rough it. I'm not sure I'll have the $165 after the ATP ticket and the plane tickets, so $25 a night sounds pretty sweet.
-

hahahahahaha our country is a cultural wasteland
-
Between tickets, lodgings, and recreational drug costs, I know I don't have the money, but Sleep playing Dopethrone?!??!!?!
Who wants to buy my organs?
-
They're playing Holy Mountain.
Are you stoned right now?
-
I would also like to point out that sleep did Dopesmoker.
Dopethrone be the product of Electric Wizard.
-
PONYTAIL / SHONEN KNIFE
The order here is BAFFLING.
-
fuck, why does nothing like this ever happen in Toronto
between the prohibitive cost of tickets, the fact that I can't drive, and the fact that the only people even close to NYC that I know live in Rochester... there's no way I can go.
edit: actually I'm still more jealous of the Netherlands for getting Roadburn, but this is pretty awesome too.
-
Fuck goddamn motherfuck shit goddamn Sleep's performing Holy Mountain and I can't go
oh wait it's because I'll be at Burning Man.
Have fun guys!
-
Fuck yes no longhair hessians at my fucking rockfest
-
I'm totally going to go up to Al and say "I was one of the five people who stayed to watch you play for five hours straight in Jerusalem".
-
When I saw Iggy & The Stooges a couple of years ago it was at this concert festival thing where there was a giant area for VIP in between people who were there to watch Iggy and the stage. It was filled with people wearing fancy suits. They were rushed by the people who were there to rock, who then also rushed the stage. The security guards tried to interfere but Mr. Pop told them to 'let the fuckers on'*.
*I'm not sure that's exactly what he said, but it was close.
-
Yeah I am totally hopping up on stage and dancing with Jim Osterberg
-
I'm totally going to go up to Al and say "I was one of the five people who stayed to watch you play for five hours straight in Jerusalem".
Now this is something I'm fucking jealous of. Goddamn.
-
Spiritualized playing Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space in its entirety has been added to Matt Groening's UK gig.
Looks like that's the one to go to, now.
-
Shiiiiiiit

Hallogallo (Michael Rother and Friends present the music of Neu!), Shellac, Fursaxa, Text Of Light (with Lee Ranaldo), Sian Alice Group, The Greenhornes, and Steve Albini card room confirmed for ATP NY 2010. Shellac usually sets up a softball game, too.
Brian Jonestown Massacre canceled and there are still openings for bands on Friday and Sunday, so hopefully they'll be announced soon.

This might be the best thing that has ever happened to me, no joke.
-
Here's (http://www.atpfestival.com/events/atpnewyork2010/lineup.php) the full line up.
Bill Murray may be there! How weird.
A couple non-band things:
- There is also a book club (http://www.atpfestival.com/events/atpnewyork2010/news/1008170844.php) this year and the Criterion Cinema movies (http://www.atpfestival.com/events/atpnewyork2010/news/1008201036.php) have all been announced.
- Shellac usually hosts a softball game, so if you're interested, listen out for that. They usually say something about it during their show.
- There will be a BBQ by the outdoor pool. Kutsher's is a pretty big place, but they usually have signs up everywhere and they give you a small package when you get your wristbands that has a map and a summary of all the bands and movies.
Random stuff:
Make sure to bring lots of earplugs.
There's a little convenience store by stage one that sells raincoats and stuff if it turns out to be really rainy. The food court is usually a small bit of distance, but there's no sheltered walkways between it and the main building. It poured at least one day both years.
Most bands sell their merchandise the day they perform, but the ATP stuff sells out really fast.
-
The long-delayed photos from this dumb thing right here (http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=246574&id=741252528&l=36f14f3fbb)
-
Uh we didn't really take many pictures I guess
-
Hey Dovs, how was Altar?
Gotta say, probably my least favorite release by either Boris or Sunn 0))).
-
Incredible.
Shane, I don't even listen to Sunn O))) at home, but I'm sure you're well-acquainted with the fact that they are a band who can only really be seriously appreciated live. I've only seen Sunn O))) once before and that was a straight drone performance, which was fine and all, but worked more as an endurance test and an experience than as anything genuinely enjoyable from a musical standpoint. I felt the straight-up gut-shaking stuff benefited far more from the presence of something with a little more light-n-shade, including some moments of actual, genuine beauty (after a fashion).
Also, I had the privilege of getting to view the show while standing alongside one of the paths to the entry/exit, and it was a great joy to take note of all the people leaving midway through the set. Also observing all the people entering without any ear protection, and thinking about just how truly fucked they were about to get.
-
And I guess more importantly, DUDE YOU SAW DUNGEN RIGHT?
-
Yup
