Title: WCT: Jan 18-22, 2010
Post by: jwhouk on 17 Jan 2010, 21:38
Might as well get things started with a poll.

Oh thank you! THANKYOU!!! *weeps   and kisses your feet* Finally, someone to relieve me of the ever so onerous task of starting the weekly thread!

......

Aherm.   So, I'm tempted to pick one of the last two, but I'll be a (little) serious and choose option 2. Though I still hold out hope for the Faye/ Marten (Farten?) ending of option 3, that's pretty much impossible without a way uncool crash and burn of Dora and Marten's (Dorten? Mara?) relationship. And option one would be just complicated, requiring another apartment, Marten and Dora to have already been alone for a while, and for Faye to burn down the current apartment in order to join them.

Not that I'm not enjoying the current story arc, but I was sort of hoping for a Faye/Angus confrontation to start the week. From the ustream it looks like a Dora/Marten conversation. I hope that Faye gets around to letting Angus know she doesn't hate his guts soon. I feel bad for the guy ):

Well uh. This comic answered the Thread Poll.

I figured that was what was going to happen. Heck, have we even seen Dora's place in the last year? (Real time)

Hey, no problemo.

Obviously, I posted the poll before Jeph had the comic up, so I didn't realize Dora would decide off the top of the bat.

Also, I'll admit I'm not much for swearing, so don't expect any snarky polls with cussin' in it. (Yeah, I'm 42, why do you ask?)

How dare you intentionally disrupt a very thorough and important scientific study! Now we have to start all over again.

Also, that's a pretty hopping coffee joint to have an eye-care plan.

I shall name my first child jwhouk in your honor. And I think opinions on swearing have more to do with taste than age. I'm not averse to moderate and situation appropriate (oh fuck, my arm!) swearing, but when it becomes a verbal tick (like, totally like valley girl talk ) it is exceedingly annoying. I will never again watch Robin Williams do standup.

I think Dora's decision was a no-brainer.  She was practically living there as it was, overnight in any case.

Is it just me, or is the way that Dora is looking at Marten in panel 4 kind of scary... maybe I am imagining things. I guess I am just wondering how well this is going to go down. It would not exactly be compelling if they all slept in one big pile like hamsters (thank you Futurama for this analogy) and lived happily ever after. Question is, who will be the one to rock the boat?

I'm pretty sure she's kidding about the eyecare. As in, if she really wanted to be "correct", she'd add, "...or pretty much anything else, since we don't have one." Course, you never know; in the QC Northampton, they might have a University Health Care System that has really great and affordable plans for small businesses.

Almost tempted to change the poll to "What do you think the living arrangements will be?"

Dora and Marten in one room, Faye in the other
Faye and Dora in one room, Marten in the other
Faye and Marten in one room, Dora in the other (!)
Dora in one room, Marten in another, and Faye back on the couch
All three in one bed!
Pintsize gets one bedroom, Mieville gets the other

I have this bizare feeling the corporate health care plan at COD is "don't get sick".

On a different note as a forty year old I also try not to swear - don't want to teach the lads too many bad habits (not that they haven't picked up a few words on the school ground), or the troops (amazing how much better the troops pay attention to you when every second word isn't some form of profanity)

Obviously there has been a conversation between Dora and Faye that we have not been privy to.

So Dora's moving in.

The probability of a drunken threesome between Marty, Dora and Faye just went up a few notches.

Maybe Hanners could be a dominatrix...give her a thong instead of a telescoping baton and some leather and this comic could go places

Will it do Faye good to live with a cat?

Jeph said once that if she ever had a pet it would be a cat (she seemed more like a dog person to me somehow).

The mental health benefits of having a companion animal around are well known and are the kind of benefits Faye needs.

Mieville doesn't seem to be super-affectionate though. He or she is apparently more the type that stands near you and converses.

LOL, getting crowded! it'd be just like my cousin's place in Shanghai! Except for granny... and the kids... and the cousin up from the country looking for work... not to mention the cousin visiting from Australia (me). Nah, plenty of room!

BTW, "spookybutt"? I thought Dora's gothiness had rolled off Jeph's kitchen table and now lay lost in the litter of discarded plotlines...

Meh. I have friends with pets. I've seen their houses. I've heard the stories. Having my furniture covered in pet hair, plus the occasional cat-turd in the bed, would send me off the deep end.

Mieville doesn't seem to be super-affectionate though.

Depends.  If a cat thinks it's presence annoys someone enough, they'll become affectionate with that person just to push them off the deep end.  I imagine Faye will soon be spending her mornings being woken up by a cat pawing her face.

I sense a disturbance in the force . . . and a distinct feeling that Mieville will team up with the Roomba, assuming it survived its blast-off awhile back.  Kitty + Roomba always = win.

Hanners may have a teeny issue visiting them, though, once Dora and Mieville move in.  I can't imagine her being OK with entering an apartment containing a box of fecal matter.

Is Dora's apartment even in the same building?  If it's a different one, and the one that Marten, Faye, and Hanners are in doesn't allow pets, then Dora may have to give Mieville away -- perhaps to her brother, thus ensuring that Sven will yet again have more pussy than he can handle.

1. Close the door to your bedroom. If it can be opened, do something against it.
2. If they go on the furniture, shoo them away.
3. Give them places where they're allowed to be and make them as comfortable as possible.

That works with our cat.

Sex toys are party favors if you attend the right (or wrong, depending on POV) sort of parties. Beats paper hats all hollow.

And Carl-E, you are very much going to hell for quoting that song and resurrecting my TV-scarred youth. Besides, this will be either 'Four's Company" or five, depending on how one counts Mieville.

I was just about to post something about Dora's cat.  I'm not worried about Faye and the cat, but what about Pintsize and the cat?  I have a feeling he's going to try and mod it like he and Winslo did with the roomba.  Going to be a "Borg" kitty running around soon after Dora moves in! (Or a "disemboweled" Pintsize).

Aha! that's it! The source of the True Drama; once Mieville is all moved in, he will immediately dump Dora for Faye and sour their relationship horribly, whilst planting his murderous suggestions in Faye's much more receptively violent, and now more embittered, mind, causing her to eventually flip out and kill the coffee shop. It's death-agony will reverberate through the caffinatrix (the mystical plane that binds all caffeine molecules together) and sour the world's entire coffee crop for the next seven years. Only Starbucks survives the cataclysm, because no-one who drinks there knows what coffee is supposed to taste like anyway.

I thought that Starbucks was an angel or vision guide or something. The ending wasn't really clear. Also, I thought the caffinatrix was the network of espresso machines our bodies are hooked up to, providing power to them in return for a digital universe and a constant mocha drip.

To be fair, Dora was still doing the goth thing in both of those strips. The nickname doesn't really make sense anymore.

But, of course, one of my friends is nicknamed "Squeaks" because of how hilariously squeaky his voice was when he hit puberty. The name stuck and now, 10 years later, there are still a few people who call him Squeaks.

One of my younger brothers (there are four of us) woke up one christmas morning before anyone else.  He was three yeards old.

He opened everyone's presents and left them in a huge pile.  My parents had to sort it all out, and no one got to open anything

From that day to this, he's been nicknamed "Grinch" for stealing christmas.  Even his wife uses it.  He's 41.

Nicknames stick, people!

Let's all give Angus a hand for saying what we've all wanted to at one time or another… possibly minus the "twinkle-tits" part. Possibly.

My favorite part of that panel is the fact Angus seems to be eying the relevant portion of anatomy. Though, given how she fills out the shirt, can't fault him too much.

Say, does that last comment mean Faye addresses herself as "twinkle-tits"?

They sound better than they really are.  Sure, you can fill the three dimensional box in your rreality with stuff, then slide it sideways in the 4th dimension so that you have another empty box (or just hide it completely if you're at the end of a 4th dimensional side), but then the people in the neighboring three dimensions can take your stuff...

And if you use time as the 4th dimension, then you just put everything into a box that you pushed into in your future, which really doesn't help anything.  You can't push it into your past, that would be paradoxical - two of everything in the box...

Doesn't really solve your storage problems that way!

That portion of the female anatomy exerts a gravititational field that draws the eyes, hands, etc. of many males.

Faye certainly seems to be over her avoidance of contractions in her speech.

She has been over the use of contractions for quite some time now. I believe it was a result of her becoming comfortable with people in Northampton, especially Marten, Dora and company.

Large quantities of alcohol, therapy and her flings with Sven probably helped as well, though it is debatable which helped the most.

And worse, pile enough stuff in there, and Cthulhu will start banging on the walls. But Faye's an art major, so some ignorance about the drawbacks to trans-dimensional closet-space is to be expected.

Through 71 votes (8:41 ET 1/20/10):

So - who moves where with whom?
Faye moves in with Dora and Marten    - 2 (2.8%)
Dora moves in with Faye and Marten    - 35 (49.3%)
Marten and Dora leave Faye in the lurch    - 0 (0%)
Faye and Dora leave Marten in the lurch    - 8 (11.3%)
Dora leaves Faye and Marten for Hannelore    - 26 (36.6%)

And I'm going to change the poll a bit. Enjoy.

Maybe Faye is going soft on him.

I think you're right - the look on her face in the last panel, despite the smugly snide comment, is downright beatific!  I think she's starting to find Angus endearing, especially in his current state of confusion...  the fact that he's actually trying to be considerate and give a damn, that he's so confused as to do so inappropriately (at work), and yet is still together enough to put out an alternative sass line that she can appreciate...

Yeah, it's not love yet, but it's certainly creeping in that direction!

Although, we know Jeph.  It'll be 2013 before they declare their undying love and finally move in together, leaving the other apartment to Marten and a pregnant Dora, and forcing Marigold to move in with Hanners.  No, I'm not shipping those two, it's more like the odd couple (although Momo and Winslow... naaah, never mind).

At first glance it is easy to see why they make this conclusion.

The actual dominant species is small, furry, cuddly.

Pintsize is just held together with magnetic fields, if I remember correctly (a weird way to hold a computer together, btw.  The drives and boards must be shielded pretty well.  Or maybe that explains a few processing "quirks").

Anyway, a cat's rub isn't as inoccent as it looks.  Scent glands behind the ears and near the base of the tail mark their "territory".  Pintsize is, quite literally, part of Mieville's "terror-tory" now!

And Jeph missed the low growl that went with the bared teeth, that morphs into the purr when dominance is established!

Can't wait until Mieville realizes that Pintsize is just a big wind-up mousie toy to pounce on whenever he crosses the room!  I see a lot more side strips in the future...

Cats are the spawn of Satan.

Well there is the possibility that Mieville is no ordinary cat, but actually Dora's familiar (http://s3.hubimg.com/u/1571738_f520.jpg)...

I don't care how cute or mouselike their mews are the rest of the time. The instant you put them in the bath, it's the Torrid Wailing of the Damned!

My last cat was a Red-pointed Siamese very much like these (http://digilander.libero.it/gattipersiani/razze/siamese%20red%20point.gif). Far from mewing, he growled and snarled as if he were some kind of miniature cheetah.

P.S. I think I've succumbed to this (http://xkcd.com/231/). Perhaps this whole thread has too...

Hanners WTF FTW. Though we have had hints of her murderous nature now and again (this is where I post links to said comics, but I'm lazy.) Now remembering the Rapper Phallus and giggling. Also, she seems to be channeling the xkcd strip an earlier post mentioned.

I love the absolute denial of what just happened that Dora displays.

The denial in that Mieville just displayed his dominance over Pintsize? Mieville was facing away from Dora and Marten...she might not have seen the face he made. Rather, she might have just seen him get really close, and then purr and rub on Pintsize. So...friends.

I might have gone with that, but it was pretty clear that Marten know what was up, and she could still see Pintsize's face and reaction.

Jeph needs to make Hanners's shirt. I totally want one. Also, great comic. I would have thought Hanners would have freaked out because of the germs though.

Agreed and agreed. I need a panel 3 shirt stat! I expected the Hanners reaction to be a freakout over cat hair and bowel trouble or something.

It works best after you give them a good head scratching- the sudden shift really throws them off.

Neither Karma, nor pecking order, just a simple fact: no matter how crazy or scary you are, there's something out there crazier and more frightening. And quite possibly ready to eat you. Cats know this better than we.

I'm trying to remember if that expression is really that different than the 'smile' Hanners gave the boy on the soda shop a few hundred years little while ago.
Title: Re: WCT: Jan 18-22, 2010

It is very similar to Hanner's smile for cute boy.

No one can blame Meiville for making himself scarce.

If he's any kind of cat he had at least seven different potential hiding spots identified within 4 seconds of entering the apartment. Thirteen if Faye's bedroom door was open.

One must plan ahead when one is altogether Evil.

And don't get me wrong about the cats being evil thing, I love cats, even with the evil thing.

Pintsize may not accept his lower status and may find ways to continue the fight. We may not have seen the last of this.

Don't be silly. One unwritten rule of life is that frightening people who think you're 'cute' always, always find you, sooner or later. They're like Pepe le Pew. Meiville can run, but he'll never be able to successfully hide, long-term, in any case. He's just lucky she can't pinch his cheeks.

You will NOT find a cat if it doesn't want to be found.

That's not quite true.  You CAN find a cat that doesn't want to be found, you just pay heavily for it in torn flesh (usually due to clawed appendages darting out from under whatever you've tracked them to).

He finds you.

With his claws.

As well as cooling vents.

There are those to whom cats know not to do this. I knew one saintly (so far as I was aware, anyway) little old lady who had several beasts in the house and a sizable pride outside, and she could grab any of them from anywhere by the scruff of its neck, and out it would come. Never a scratch, never a bite, nothing more than a yowl of protest. Of course, perhaps she did something at a time when no one was looking to cause this passivity—I've no idea.

For the rest of us, there's extra-thick oven mitts.

No, you have it, Raoullefere.  It's the scruff of the neck.  So long as you're consistant with it, and restrict your handling to that area, the cat tends to go limp.  It takes a little practice, but it's how mother cats carry them as kittens, and there's some biological/nervous system thing that tells them they're being handled for their own good.  Even my 16 pound "panther" goes with it, and their claws even withdraw some!

It's how I get mine off of anything they shouldn't be on.

Ahh, their one weakness.

That and a small thermal exhaust port right below the min port, or was that something else?

Mmmmh, in such a case, a good shout usually does the work. Clapping hands too. Teaches the cat not to get back there again, in the long run.
I only use the scruff trick when the cat is not in a place I disapprove in general but is inconvenient for me at the moment (typically, my lap, when I have to get up), in such a case it's important to use the gentlest method of relocation, especially with a kitten.

I misspoke earlier, you're right, the scruff is not effective for keeping them off things.

But cats tend to just look at you curiously if you just shout at them.  At least, mine do.  There needs to be a threat of harm to associate the shout with.  I find a squirtgun is effective, since you don't have to be right on top of the cat.  If your aim is good, anything light at hand will do (pens or pencils are always nearby for me).  A shout and quick attack are very effective training tools.  Then the shouts work fine!

You can tell it's Sunday when we get this far off the WCT topic.

KITTY!  Kitty kitty kitty kitty kitty kitty kitty kitty kitty KITTY!!!!

It is? My own cat very much dislikes the scruff trick, in so far that he'll lie flat on the ground before you can lift him up, so I always lift him under the shoulders or carry him by the back. If he wants to be let go he'll push and struggle, sometimes very violently, but there are never any claws or teeth involved. Those are always reserved for other cats.

Have a friend who keeps a pride of cats and rules them with a squirt-gun—apparently it's quite a successful tactic. (And if you're reading this, MK, see, I do pay attention).

The Offtopic of sSunday is nothing compared to that of Monday: Kitties, Lox, 1-hour Martinizing!

Today's comic was a bit sad... I don't remember that Hannes talked about her feelings that way before.

She also looks cute in the first and fourth panel :P
