Hey. I was going to make a thread just for this one game, but then I thought that this game is really early in production, so maybe it wouldn't hold up on its own as a discrete thread.
So here we are then, let me talk about Grim Dawn - http://www.grimdawn.com (in exciting point form!)
- It is being made by Crate Entertainment, who are guys who used to be Iron Lore, the guys who made (the very capable Diablo clone) Titan's Quest.
- It has a pretty cool storyline: there is an "otherworldy power" that wants to use humans are some sort of resource (pretty scary!) and also this other mysterious otherworldly power who wants to stop them - by killing us all instead (not good!)
- Instead of being your average medieval type RPG it is gonna take inspiration from the Victorian era, so I've guessing muskets and such as well as swords kind of like Torchlight, but the settings/screenshots make it look darker in tone. Less cartoony.
- Something about the battle/goings on between the two otherworldly powers is causing weird shit to happen, and humanity to start to exhibit odd powers (magic/psionics, would be the obvious guess)
I honestly don't know all that much more than that, but even with what little I know it seems kind of promising! I am hoping they keep it as dark as it sounds and make it a Victorian-era supernatural survival horror-esque rpg mash type setting.
So what are you guys looking forward to in the near to distant future, and why?
(and it'd be better if we talked about lesser-known games rather than just having a million "FWOARRR, STARCRAFT 2/DIABLO 3/BLOWJOBS 4EVER" posts)
-
Fairly mainstream, it's true, but I'm looking forward to
Fallout:New Vegas.
It's going to be done by Obsidian, and I really enjoyed KoTOR2, so I'm fairly hopeful.
I also really enjoyed Fallout 3, even though it became extremely same-ish in the expansions.
I'm hoping that Obsidian manage to do something different with New Vegas, but I'm not holding my breath *too* much.
-
Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri
wait wrong future sorry
Seriously though, Stalker: CoP. Shadow of Chernobyl is easily in the top 3 or 4 games of the last decade - hopefully they can back it up with Call of Pripyat.
-
I'm looking forward to Just Cause 2.
that's about it, actually. at least that I can think of off the top of my head. It's hard to think about other games when all I can think about is basejumping from the top of skyscraper to grappling hook a fighter jet and ride it like a surfboard, plant a bomb on it, then leap off and watch upwards as you detonate it.
not to mention cars, motorcycles, boats; all driveable in jungles, beachs, deserts, and snowy moutains. oh yeah and there's a hovercraft.
did i mention that it's also a shooter? I tend to forget but there are also guns and enemies and stuff.
infinitely redeployable parachute? yes, please. fuck physics.

Duke Nukem Forever

Hmmm, smaller games. I guess I'll use this opportunity to pimp some downloadable games then.
The Behemoth's next XBLA game just got an official title. It's called Battleblock Theater, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dxHV5n6AkSI) and it looks like a really interesting mashup of co-op and competitive platforming. I really liked Castle Crashers and I support the Behemoth's indie sensibilities, so I'm pretty excited about it. Supposed to come out sometime this year, it sounds like they're going to be narrowing down the timeframe pretty soon.
The Misadventures of PB Winterbottom (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Triirdqmevo) is another quirky indie platformer. It's basically if somebody took the world from Braid where you make shadow copies of yourself and expanded heavily on that concept and then gave it a tongue-in-cheek silent movie atmosphere. This one is out in just two weeks, too.
There's also Fez (http://gamevideos.1up.com/video/id/24123), which has a retro art style and soundtrack, which I'm always a sucker for. I also really like the 2D-3D gameplay concept. It's been done a couple times before, but I think there's still potential there to make something really cool.
As far as retail stuff goes, I'll just rattle off a list quickly. I'm interested in a lot of the more esoteric DS RPGs that are coming out like Infinite Space, Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey, and Etrian Odyssey 3. Those don't exactly show well on video though, and I think the only ones I could find would all be in Japanese anyway.
Sin and Punishment 2 is supposed to get an English release sometime. Impressions I've read from importers indicate that it's fucking awesome.
Split/Second (http://www.giantbomb.com/splitsecond-actual-gameplay/17-1802/) looks like somebody cranked up the knob on Burnout, which I'm all in favor of because I find the vast majority of racing games completely dull. Here's another video (http://www.giantbomb.com/splitsecond-power-plays/17-1713/) which explains the Power Play concept in the game.
Not sure if these really count as 'small' but I'm also really curious about Alpha Protocol and Alan Wake. I'm really pulling for Obsidian to finally have a success that lives up to their pedigree, and I'm really intrigued by the idea of a modern day spy RPG, but it doesn't seem like Sega knows what the fuck to do with AP, which worries me a bit. Alan Wake has been in development for fucking ever, which is usually a bad sign, but I like the moody, atmospheric spin that they're going for. Whether or not they'll pull it off, I honestly can't tell.

Avernum 6 comes out for Windows this spring, being one of the very few game series that's developed for the mac and ported to the pc. I'll be playing it, as I've played all of the other ones. I haven't finished 5 yet, but I'll be getting around to it. This rpg series is full of awesome, great story, great exploration, big, big locations, and a enjoyable combat system.
I also just read on their homepage what's going to happen next:
* What's Coming? We are about to start porting Avernum 6 to Windows. We hope to release it in early March. Then we will begin an all-new game series, with a new system, world, and epic storyline.
Spiderweb has made magic for more than 15 years, and will probably keep doing just that. Exciiiited!

Katawa Shoujo. A bishojo visual novel where the male protaginist moves to a special school for disabled students after he develops a heart defect. Luckily the school is filled to the tits in disabled hotties. The game was developed by users on 4chan a while back with a demo chatper released last year. I played the demo when I came across it on a hentai site, and only remembered it now because of a recent article on Kotaku about it. Mostly played the demo to have a laugh but found myself kinda liking it, moreso for the fact that it got me to thinking that it wasn't just a mere fetish game and more of a commentary on anime and dating sim games in general.
Basically this is the only really obscure game that I know of worth mentioning right now.
-
I just read that Kotaku article yesterday.
I think it's a cool idea and I support it but it's really not something I feel like I could sit down and play.
-
then there's the 4chan angle which makes me think the entire game will be really well made and poigant(no idea how to spell that) only to have an unskippable goatse/2chicks1cup cutscene when you beat it.
or something.
basically, it sounds too legit to be true and I feel like it's going to be a horrible prank on humanity.
-
basically, it sounds too legit to be true and I feel like it's going to be a horrible prank on humanity.
Say one thing about the 4chan community say that they will follow a plan to the very bitter end.
Only to wipe the ends of their collective nobs on your brain parts.
-
Obscure and future games? Zeno Clash 2 immediately jumps to mind. The developers haven't said anything but "We will start making it" but that's enough for me, I love that game to bits. In the somewhat nearer future (March), the Ultimate Edition for XBLA will be released and I'm hoping that the PC update isn't far behind that. It has co-op! You can read more at http://www.zenoclash.com/ but it's better if you just watch this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z2KuQAIlN0w). You can ignore the shooting bit in that one, that's horribly outdated.
-
Alpha Protocol and Fallout: New Vegas, mainly. It's been awhile since I've been "plugged in" to a game community while a game is actively being promoted and I expect Bethsoft to make it rain from a PR standpoint. Should be fun.
The ads for the new AvP game make it look good but I think that's mainly because they've been scripted sequences. The whole AvP franchise was really meant for video games (and to a lesser extent, comic books) and I think it'd be hard to fuck up. The original game's still fuckin' great on the Marine side of things.
Bioshock 2's out next week, of course, but I feel like it could be a letdown.
Heavy Rain looks really promising but I don't have a PS3 and the only guy I know who does is a fucking trust fund space cadet and no game is worth having to hang around that guy.
Other than that, with Bioware's slate clean for the next year at least there's not much for me to look forward to beyond what I just mentioned.
-
The only game I find myself actively waiting for would be Red Dead Redemption. Which I am immensely excited for.
-
Infinity (http://www.infinity-universe.com/Infinity/).
Looks several shades of awesome. I mean, It's pretty much Eve gone right. No goddamned gate camping, for one.
-
The next few months really suck for me gamewise. There are a ton of titles that I'm looking forward to but I seriously do not have enough cash for most of them.
Heavy Rain has been such a reverse burn for me, I wanted that game SO freaking badly and the closer and closer it comes to release the more I want to own and play it, and the less excited I am for it. I already pre-ordered it so a lot of my excitement vanished.
White Knight Chronicles and Resonance of Fate. I lump these JRPG's together because it's been such a long time since I've played one and I've been craving the flavour of one for a while. RoF gets released the same day as FFXIII but I find myself not excited for FF at all, even though there is such an insane amount of hype around this game. It actually looks rather boring to me. I really like JRPGs Square seems to be rather disappointing lately.
Pixeljunk Shooter Encore. They haven't announced it yet, but it will happen. That and the fact that within the year (I believe) I will be playing Castle Crashers on my PS3. That is so very, very exciting.
-

I don't know, I haven't seen anything like that with L.U.R.K. yet.
I'm also looking forward (3 days, but more since I can't afford it) to Call of Pripyat. I've heard it is better than SoC from the people that either live overseas or ordered it from overseas when it was released last year.
-

yessssss!
-
Just checked their website, they apparently changed the name to Fedge.
-
3D Dot Game Heroes (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/104/1045698p1.html), Heavy Rain and Alpha Prototocol are the only ones I have in mind right now. Otherwise this year seems fairly barren for really exciting games at the moment.
I mean, I'm gonna grab Blood Bowl for the 360, assuming it'snot horribly fucked compared tot he PC game. It's not real high on the priority list since I have the PC version right now.
Tropico 3 for the PC is quite a bit of fun and since I only paid $13 for it on Steam I'm probably gonna grab it on the 360 as well somewhere down the line.
I don't know, I need to seriously look at the news for this year and see what's in the pipeline.
-
There is this game called Love (http://www.quelsolaar.com/love/index.html) which looks pretty rad and is in beta right now.
-
Yeah, that whole Love thing looks like it could be really cool.
Plus it's just one dude doing all the work and that is pretty impressive.
-
It looks cool and all, and I signed up for the beta a while back, but I have no clue how the fuck I'm supposed to play it.
-
on acid
duh
-
that didn't help at alllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll
-
Sadly the only game I'm really looking forward to is the new Pokemon remake.
-
I am still looking forward to Mass Effect 2 because I have no money ever
-
I am still looking forward to Mass Effect 2 because I have no money ever
Hey there, broke buddy. I'm going to be looking through my room pretty soon to see if I can come close to scraping up enough money for CoP, and then I'll have to fight myself over whether I buy CoP or a replacement stereo for my car, since the previous owner bought one with a CD player, no tape deck, and no RCA jack for mp3 players. At least I just got paid for some grunt work I did for my dad more than a month ago, unexpected money is the best money.
-
Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri
It's still the best of the Colonization series. If they announced a second one, I'd wet myself.
-
new Pokemon remake.
Yeah Heart Gold is the only thing I'm thinking about pre-ordering at the moment.
What I'm looking forward to most gaming-wise is something that's already out:
I cannot wait 'til friends come back from their holiday so we can get some serious Tatsunoko vs Capcom going. It's a pretty sweet game. It's really easy to pick up and fairly easy to step up to more advanced things and it's got all the depth you'd want to take it as seriously as you want. I didn't know who any of the Tatsunoko characters were when I started but it really doesn't matter. Fun game, and I can't wait to play it with people. I just wish it was on ps3 or pc so I could use my fightstick. Controllers are appalling for fighting games and the wii's classic controller even more so.
-
I'm looking forward to Just Cause 2.

I know I took a bit of convincing to get onboard the JC train last time, but not this time, man. It looks freakin' sweet.
Holy shit yes (http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/62251)
-
Ok, I just got excited for Just Cause 2.
-
Mass Effect 3
Star Wars : The Old Republic
Rome : Total War 2
Whatever Sid Meir's next game will be
Natural Selection 2
-
Ok, I just got excited for Just Cause 2.
If you're a PS3 owner, prepare to get even more excited: JC2 for PS3 comes equipped with video capture and Youtube upload, right out of the box (I think).
"check out the video I just made, it's me jumping out of a moving helicopter right before it crashes into the side of a building then freefalling two hundred feet to hijack a cruise ship and beach it on an island. Oh yeah and that island was frontin' so I blew it the fuck up and rode into the sunset on my hovercraft."
-
Mass Effect 3
This is all I want.

Oh yes and DEUS EX 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkXCE8CkNZU&feature=related) MOTHERFUCKERS
Apparently it will be named Deus Ex: Human Revolution. What does it say about the progress of the game when they trademark the name?
-
The little I've heard of it makes it sound more like Invisible War, but who knows what's true at this point. The original's a hard game to measure up to. I wouldn't be surprised if they decided not to try.
-
Metro 2033. Made by most of the guys who did STALKER, and on the console? Yesplz.
-
From what I heard it's about 12 hours long and entirely linear, with very long scripted sequences. I'm not optimistic.
-
Do you want to know what else is about 12 hours long, entirely linear, with tons of scripted sequences? Uncharted 1 and 2. Linearity and Scripting are not bad things in any way. I'm hating how these words are being used to denigrate games now.
However, I've also heard that it is insanely tough with some rather interesting choices. Like that really good bullets are your currency. See, there are two kinds of bullets: pre-nuke and post-nuke. Pre-nuke bullets are what are used as currency to buy things but on the flip side they also do something like twice as much damage and are more accurate. The journalists who demo'd the game said that everyone was using their currency to kill enemies because the ammo supply is super limited.
-
I am tired of open-world games that aren't really open, anyway. Stalker confines you with enemies you can't kill easily, and anomalies that you can't knock down. And honestly, a lot of the time, open-world bores me. I tolerated it in Fallout 3, because it was fun to listen to music and do the random encounters, but it is a large part of why I can't finish Oblivion. And besides, scripted sequences are fun.
-
Yeah, they had a little blerb about Metro 2033 in this months GI and it sounds pretty interesting. I had heard almost nothing about it until now, so I'm interested.
1. You're map is an actual, paper map that you pull out and look at in real time (look out, behind you!)
2. Ammo as currency. Finally, a post-apocolyptic currency that makes sense (no, i won't trade you my gun for a pile of bottle caps, what the fuck?)
3. Timing your own oxygen usage when wearing respirators/gas masks (gasp choke cough cough)
4. It's the fuckin' apocolypse, c'mon!
Tentatively excited: This could be a good game.*
*ITT we talk like Elcor
-
I read that Fallout: New Vegas will boast a Hardcore mode that accounts for ammo weight and thirst, among others, things that the Fallout 3 community made mods for.
-
Wow est, that game must really have you going because you "sound" (as I read) to me so different that your usual posts.
Maybe is all in my head anyway.
In response to your post, I hope a decent Starflight (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starflight) sequel comes arround soon.
EA killed that project eons ago, but apparently a pulse remains (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starflight#Legacy).
The original starflight continues to be one of the best games I've ever played in my entire life. Then again the list is accompanied by titles such as Enemy Territory and Harvest Moon.
In a related news, a strange thing happened to me a few weeks ago: I reinstalled and played Diablo 2 (with the LoD expansion pack) thoroughly and finished it as a way of lubing my way for D3 (whenever that thing might ship). As I finished the game, I felt as if I finally outgrew the franchise. I even found the clickety clack of the mouse utterly ridiculous now.
I think I'm showing signs of resistance to nostalgia. Who knows if it'll be the same with Starflight.
-
didn't know where else to put this but I had to share it somewhere.

Is anyone else not super pissed? I'm not super pissed
-
Remember, this is Peter Molyneux, so at most, the game will have cosmetic weapon degradation, resource management that boils down to "enslave workes/unionize workers" and the ability to now physically interact with NPCs.
-
So yeah, turns out that Obsidian's third title in development, besides Fallout: New Vegas and Alpha Protocol, is a Wheel of Time (http://ve3d.ign.com/articles/news/53041/Obsidian-Entertainment-Developing-New-Wheel-Of-Time-Titles) game, for Red Eagle games (whoever that is) to be distributed by EA.
I have no feelings on this one way or the other. Feargus is running that ship, I think.
*edit - Reading into the agreement it seems really strange. All the creative control is in Red Eagle's hands but the majority of the gruntwork is being done by Obsidian.
-
The Molyneaux thing started a while ago when he said that RPG's have been fundamentally flawed for the entirety of their existence. When I read it I looked at Diablo, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Valkyria Chronicles, Fallout and went "nope."
Then he went off of Fable and started spewing tons of stuff about Natal, he's been focused on that and Milo for the past while. Then he talked about how Fable 3 was going to integrate Natal into it.
Now that some screens have been released I think we'll start hearing more and more and more about it. His comments will be really interesting to read for the next...however. The fallout from it will be even more entertaining.
But, speaking of more future games I am excited for sequels that either are, or are kind of speculated.
Infamous 2. I really liked Infamous, I really did, until I played it for the 3rd time and realized that the enemies are absolutely horrible to fight, the city was very boring...but the story was fantastic and the powers were amazing. Some magazine is supposed to have the scoop on it in the next month or two. I just hope they improve the enemies and spice up the city and I will totally be there.
Demon's Souls 2. Apparently this is either in talks or in the works. I will probably never beat the original. I am going to try...but I have very little hope. A second one would be one of the most amazing things that could happen. I will buy it...and then never beat it.
-
I finally played the demo for Heavy Rain last night and it feel like an incredibly natural evolution of the adventure genre and I'm not sure I can actually describe it in any way to make it sound good other than "just play it". So yeah, I'm even a little more excited now.
-

I wouldn't say he's wrong, I'd say that Molyneux can't do any better. In fact he does far worse.

No but see Fable 2 was innovative because......uh.....swords and guns in the same RPG that isn't from Japan?

Arcanum lol

I don't care if it's innovative or not I am fucking balls-out excited for this game. (http://kotaku.com/5470427/your-first-look-at-fable-iii-in-action)
The Fable franchise hasn't disappointed me yet.
-
yeah, I was just about to post that. Don't get me wrong, I'm totally excited for more Fable. I just get irritated hearing Molyneaux hype his shit up like it was Jesus.
For example, the weapon morphing thing looks and sounds pretty cool, but the way he describes it, like no-one has ever done it before, is just annoying.
-
Yeah, that's fair. tbh I kind of ignored all Molyneux-related Fable and Fable 2 articles before the release of those games, for the simple fact of him overhyping the thing. Without heavenly expectations, I'm able to thoroughly enjoy the experiences Lionhead does manage to create.
That being said, of course, I might break down for Fable 3 because god dammit I want to play it so bad

I heard that in the new Fable, the main character will be so customizable you can remove his lowest ribs allowing him to blow himself. For this reason, the game will be banned in Australia.
Please spread this rumor as widely as possible.

But will it be faster? My main gripe with the game was that it felt like I was trying to fight through quicksand, made even worse when they released Marvel vs Capcom 2.

But will it be faster? My main gripe with the game was that it felt like I was trying to fight through quicksand, made even worse when they released Marvel vs Capcom 2.
I doubt they'll be changing the core gameplay. Four is more like Super Turbo 2 and ST was about the same pace. It's not a versus game, which I'm actually happy about because I prefer games about making good decisions than ones about punishing people's mistakes.
-
Man, I was about to come in and post that I was excited about Super Street Fighter IV, and that that is a big deal for me because I hardly get excited about fighting games anymore, but you just had to go and beat me to the punch, huh. Ah well, here's a different clip, in HD:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4tmn93KTBGs&fmt=22
I'm pretty excited about it because it looks like it's not taking itself too seriously (I mean, Zangief as Colossus? one of Dhalsim's special attacks is hitting a dude over and over from above with his entire body using his arms like rubber bands? c'mon, that's pretty funny), but also the gameplay looks really good.
So ok, to temper my disappointment I'll talk about some other shit. Fable III could wind up being alright, but I wish Molyneux would just shut his fucking mouth. Like, I am more excited about a smaller, less-hyped sentence in the blurb:
The co-op will also allow you to separate in game, he said.
"You could go off earning money, while I go off to kill people," Molyneux said. "It's a true co-op experience."
I know that's available in some co-op games already, but there are also some where they tie you together like you're in some kind of chain gang. It's nice to know you'll have that kind of freedom to split up when you want to, then come back together and TCOB on a big job.
And I know we're talking about it in the other thread, but Civ5 is probably gonna get me interested in the Civ series again, which will probably do bad things for my sleep patterns :(
-
I never really understood what the fuck was up with Civ. What the fuck is up with it, guys?
-
I wish Molyneux would just shut his fucking mouth.
Hey hey hey
you first
-
I never really understood what the fuck was up with Civ. What the fuck is up with it, guys?
I think it comes down to the fact that the Civilization games don't lend themselves to being played mindlessly, which turns them into engrossing time-thieves despite their lack of visceral thrills. After all, most games, even twitchy games, are often most engrossing when you're still pinning mechanics down and figuring things out as you go-- I can hold a conversation while playing an old-hat FPS game easily enough, but with a shiny new unfamiliar game I might not even notice you enter the room. So since you cannot really play Civ games by rote, so they have a funny way of sucking hours out of your life before you realize they're gone. For example, I do distinctly remember feeling bored the last time I played CivIV. I also remember the fact that the session lasted 4 hours before I noticed.
-
I'm just going to hijack this thread for a brief moment because I don't really think it's worth making an entirely new thread, but Nintendo just announced a boatload of shit for the next few months.
Super Mario Galaxy 2 is out on May 23rd. The first SMG is one of my favorite games of this console generation, so this is the Wii game I've most looked forward to in a long, long time. Trailer's here (http://www.gametrailers.com/video/nintendo-media-super-mario/62270), it looks great. Apparently the hub will be a planet shaped like Mario's head, so that's awesome or horrifying depending on your perspective.
Just over a month later, Metroid: Other M is coming out: June 27th, to be exact. The gameplay is 2D sidescrolling, but apparently you can shift to first-person view at any time. As I understand it that perspective will mostly be used for exploration rather than combat. I'm most curious about this one, apparently the preview embargo lifts in a couple hours so I'll link anything I find.
Sin and Punishment 2 is being renamed Sin and Punishment: Star Successor for the West, presumably because the original was never officially released in English territories until the Virtual Console. That one will come out on June 7th, and from what I hear it's completely balls-out crazy.
Nintendo is also co-publishing a couple third party games, which is kind of weird for them. They're working with Capcom to release Monster Hunter Tri on Wii April 20th, and with Squeenix for Dragon Quest 9 on DS sometime this summer.
That's most of the important stuff. Picross 3D is finally getting a Western release, if anybody cares, and there's a bunch of WiiWare and DSWare games given dates. Mega Man 10 is coming out on March 1st, so it'll probably hit the other platforms around that time too. Cave Story is finally coming out on March 22nd, after about 2 years of delays.
-
Also Red Steel 2 is coming out in march. It looks loads better than the first.
-
Yeah, SMG2 is going to be so so so so sweet, I cannot wait!
Also, RE: Monster Hunter:
goddamnit, I wish they would make a fully next-gen Monster Hunter game for PS3 (or 360, I guess) because that would be some hotshit espescially with a legitimate online setup. You could actually play MH with *pause for dramatic effect* other people!
-
the online for MH3 is actually going to be free and if I understand correctly, will not require friend codes.
Not that the online setup for PS3 and 360 aren't better mind you.
Also, I remembered and immediately pre-ordered Supreme Commander 2 off of Steam today and this is my favorite quote about the game. "We also have to applaud Bauman's addition of "giant fire-breathing dinosaur robots.""
-
Oh, that's right, I forgot to mention that. The online play in MH3 is free, which is actually a new thing for Monster Hunter since in Japan they charge monthly for it. It also has Wii Speak support, for the like... 10 people who bought that thing.
-
Something doesn't sit right with me for Super Mario galaxy 2, it kind of looks like they added Yoshi and decided to re-release the first game.
-
Starcraft 2 is the only thing that comes to mind...too bad I didnt get into the beta
-
I feel your pain.
-
Holy shit. (http://kotaku.com/5481181/just-cause-2-demo-gives-you-35-square-miles-to-explore-explode) That is a massive fucking demo for Just Cause 2.
-
Also, for some reason, I'm really looking forward to the new Transformers game. I have nothing to base this off, aside from the art designs they have out, as I can't recall a time they've ever made a good Transformers game.
-
new Just Cause 2 faction mission walkthrough video (http://xbox360.ign.com/dor/objects/862520/just-cause-2/videos/JustCauseWalkthru.html;jsessionid=656v2v8s6rk97)
hot damn, I cannot wait for the demo on Thursday!
Watch how he backflips out of his parachute at the end, it's freaking sweet.
-
I am totally excited for that game. I'm going to free-fall off of everything. If only dude had a jetpack, Just Cause 2 would be the perfect game.
-
So, it turns out that Blur (http://www.giantbomb.com/quick-look-road-show-blur/17-2112/) is looking pretty badass, much more so than I expected. Reminds me of a modern-day F-Zero in a lot of ways, and I really like the visual style of the power-ups and menus. It makes me really regret that it's an Activision game, because of my outstanding policy of not buying Activision games under any circumstances. But, I got into the beta, so I'll report back with impressions on it once it starts next week.
-
Looks like mario kart for manly men
-
I'm not really thrilled about marrying contemporary vehicle design with the other elements of the game, but aside from that, yeah, it looks like it could be fun.
-
I believe I can objectively state that if you are not at least mildly excited for Just Cause 2, you are against fun and possibly punch babies in your spare time. You can attach dudes to things. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hb5zJtzbG4Q) This seems mundane, yet it opens up so many new avenues for cruelty potential. Imagine, if you will humor me for a moment. Should there be two player co-op, you could tether two cars together and match speed. There is a distinct possibility that the rope can interact with things. Sixty mile per hour clothesline.
-
I wonder if you can tether a car to a pole and pull a full-speed 90-degree turn like Batman can.
-
Blur looks like F-Zero without the speed or Mario Kart without the fun. It just doesn't look fun or anything.
Also, I may be the only one, but I am excited for the new WarioWare. Just because WarioWare is one of my favourites series and I want to make my own MicroGames although I doubt it will be as cool as it sounds like.
-

It looks fun as balls, but even when watching the trailer my brain screams "NO NO NO THERE SHOULD BE INERTIA AND MOMENTUM AND ACTION AND REACTION NO NO NO STOP VIOLATING NEWTON'S CORPSE". So I guess it's not for me.
-
I can't say I'm particularly excited for Just Cause 2. I'm just not much of a fan of open-world games in general, I think it's great that they're embracing the over-the-top silliness but that doesn't mean I'm really looking forward to playing it. Plus, there's no co-op, which always always always makes sandbox games better. I'm probably more excited for Crackdown 2, to be honest.
-
okay this isn't future-game related but it's not worth it's own thread and I'm hyped up so here it is.
I've been playing a shitload of Trials HD lately and it is a blast. I bought it when it first came out and had a lot of fun for a couple weeks then promptly forgot all about it. Well, the other day I downloaded the new content for it and some of the new levels are really cool. Also, I finally got a handle on the Track Creation Tool and have been working on a freaking epic level with multiple paths and hidden areas.
vvvrrroom vrrrooom

You must let go. Embrace the zen, the Thingness of the Thing. The endlessly regenerating parachute, the high tensile strength grappling hook. Newton would play it.
Treat the game's name as a mantra. Why can you jack a moving helicopter? Just cause.

No co-op? THE SADDEST FACE EVER
Though I am still excited. I feel the same excitement for Crackdown 2 and APB. APB especially because I enjoy being an asshole with friends.

Got the demo this morning before I left for work. Played it for five minutes. The controls are wonky, sort of. Feels... loose and inaccurate. However, I was able to tether myself to a canister, shoot it, and fly way up into the air on it. I was also able to knock one on its side, shoot it, and grapple it as it flew away so that the course changed dramatically. I have a feeling it will be a pretty cool game.
The only thing I didn't understand was the demo timer. Is it a "play for thirty minutes PERIOD" timer, or a "play for thirty minutes at a time" timer?
-
It's thirty minutes at a time, though it can be extended slightly.
I haven't actually played it yet since I'm at work, but I set it downloading this morning before I left so it would be ready when I got back.
I'm also gonna DL the PS3 demo so I can play them side-by-side to compare. Can't wait for 5:30!
-
alright, first thing I did in the demo (besides fall to my death several times) was tether my car to a statue, but the car wasn't powerful enough to tear it down so it became a 2000 pound Tetherball of Death instead.
I seriously must have killed ten soldiers just swinging my car in a circle around that statue.
viva la just cause 2!
-
Man when does that come out for Silver users? I want the demo bad but it ain't available yet.
-
mmm i have no idea. I thought it was available to everyone.
Let's see, the game comes out in almost three weeks or something, so maybe next week? Perhaps the week after, but that seems a little far out.
P.S. you really haven't lived until you've surfed a jeep down a mountain :-D
-
I'll keep an eye out, then...I really want to buy this game, but funds are pretty much non-existent at the moment. If I get hired at the place I interviewed at this week, that will be one of my first purchases, after the Dragon Age expansion because shit yeah I love my Bioware.

Play high speed shooting gallery, see how many guys with guns you can catch and successfully tether to a moving vehicle. Bikes are worth one, four wheeled vehicle passengers are worth five, dudes on the side of the road are worth ten. Scoring round ends when you hit something, re-enter your vehicle, or die. Mid-air catches net a double point bonus.

Man oh man oh man, this STALKER: Call of Pripyat Special Edition (http://www.play.com/Games/PC/4-/10296375/S-T-A-L-K-E-R-Call-Of-Pripyat-Special-Edition/Product.html) is just unbelievable. -
reasons just cause 2 slays:
1) "YOU THINK YOU CAN CHASE ME FOREVER? CHASE THIS" *drives off of cliff and opens parachute, watching both vehicles explode at cliff bottom*
2) "GUESS WHAT. FUCK YOU" *pulls down statue with jeep*
3) "I BET YOU THOUGHT YOU WERE A FUCKING BIG MAN, HUH" *hijacks military helicopter and blows up three cranes*
4) "I RUUUUUUUUUUUUUULE" *tethers guy to propane tank and shoots it, causing him to fly and explode and a bunch of other gas canisters to fire off in a hideous volley of death, watches from side of building as everything dies*
-
Not technically a game but eergh cannot wait for Steam (Mac).

When, I saw vs. splash screen, I first thought "Well, okay, he might still mean the girl's weird hairstyle and freaky eyes." But then Hakan started oiling himself and I thought "Well, alright, the Greeks did that in the Olympics. I'm open minded." And that's when he destroyed her with his greased up pecs. That was a li'l weird.
-
Yeah, Hakan's just fucking weird. I'm not sure if he's intended to be a joke character or what.

Honestly. (http://ps3.ign.com/dor/objects/35905/super-street-fighter-iv/videos/ssf4_trl_trailer_30810.html)

Just Cause 2 is fantastic, Bryan, maybe you just suck. Not at the game, just, you know, in general.

I found a military copter the other day. You know, the kind with 2 rotors.

Eh, I'm just going to get the version off of steam for $20 since I already have CS on steam. The German version came with a map and a lighter and either iron-on or sew-on faction patches, but the US one doesn't come with that cool stuff, so it isn't worth it.
Metro 2033's weapons make me nerd rage a little bit. Every one of the post-apocalyptic weapons I've seen has one major consistent flaw that none of you care about. I'm still going to get it eventually, it just annoys me.

So, you're saying you have a problem with the heavy machine-shotgun? Or the pneumatic spike launcher? Or the revolving-clip shotgun?
-
I've got a problem with a magazine design that everyone knows doesn't work for crap, and has demonstrated that consistently since WW1. Having big holes in your magazines to get dirt and crap clogged in them isn't good, especially not in an environment like Metro 2033's.
-
Thanks, jerk.
I never noticed that until now . . and yea . . it does really irk me.

Oh my goddddddd you guys
Metro 2033 comes out tommorow
wat srsly
I thought that shit was still a few months off, for some reason.

Wow, Just Cause 2 is awesome. I don't even have a PS3 and I'm excited for it. Reading these comments on the demo on this board convinced me to get my roommate (who has a PS3) to download it and try it out. It's so much fun.
Now I just gotta wait for it's price to drop down from the launch price and my roommate'll probably buy it. I just hope they don't try to put too much of an overbearing shit story over it--it should just stay a dicking-around-on-an-island simulator.
-
I'm pretty sure that Just Cause 2 has convinced me that I will be buying either a PS3 or a 360 when I finish my MA in September. I'll finally have the time (and hopefully money) to burn on video games at last.
This is perhaps a little off-topic for this thread, but in terms of a fun sandbox-type game I can drop into for a few minutes and blow some shit up to amuse myself on my somewhat ageing laptop, would I be better off with the original Just Cause or Saints Row 2?
-
Get Saints Row 2. The original Just Cause was basically a last-gen game ported to 360, and not a particularly well polished on on top of that. I still don't get what everyone is so fussed about, but I know enough from hearing other people talk about those games to say that much.
-
Yeah, Hakan's just fucking weird. I'm not sure if he's intended to be a joke character or what.
From what I've seen he actually looks pretty damn powerful. His "oil up" move gives him utterly ridiculous range (he can command grab from like half-screen) and makes all his moves much scarier. I'd guess the best tactic against him would be to keep up pressure so he doesn't get a chance to use oil, but then you're constantly pressuring a grappler which can be... risky.
Anyway, Dudley is going to show that rogue that true warriors fight like gentlemen. None of this oil and oddly sexual Ultras - just dignified fists.
So yeah in case you can't tell I am pretty damn excited for SSF4. (In fact I just came very close to using the word "hype". This is a problem.)
-
It's not a problem if you're talking about fighting games.
-
I'm going to have to post Overgrowth http://www.wolfire.com/overgrowth (http://www.wolfire.com/overgrowth) If you check out their previous game Lugaru (rabbits kicking ass against other rabbits and wolves, what!?), you'll be excited about Overgrowth. Also they have a really thriving pre-order community as anyone who does so gets in on weekly (daily?) builds and discuss it on their forum. The first one had a lot of ability to modify it and such as well. Also, it's great to see independent developers be successful.
-
Pikmin 3, nough said
no, really, cause a this point that's all that's out there for it.

This is by far the best argument for Just Cause 2 I've seen. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3rSSd0opis)

Yeah everything I've heard about it makes it sound like a magnificent puzzle platformer.

Sometimes I get excited for Star Wars: TOR even though it's an MMO and I think "Oh well, it's still BioWare. Who cares if it's an MMO?" and then I read the WoW thread and golly that desire dies quickly.
-
I'm really excited for the new Dragon Quest, but that comes out this week.
-
Sometimes I get excited for Star Wars: TOR even though it's an MMO and I think "Oh well, it's still BioWare. Who cares if it's an MMO?" and then I read the WoW thread and golly that desire dies quickly.
Yeah, I'm WoW player and I still think it's a horrible idea. Just a waste of resources.
-
I mean, really, there's nothing quite like spending quality time with the format to make you understand just how terribly bad it is for storytelling.
-
Well I'm sure Knaak is to blame for at least half of WoW's bad storytelling.
-
This was a big quote that killed my excitement:
Yeah, you should familiarize yourself with builds and tinker around with a reputable spreadsheet a bit if you have the time.
Ain't never been excited for a genre where tinkering with a spreadsheet is good advice.
-
Also the new Pokemon, I mean LOOK AT THIS FUCKING TRAILER (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tf83RqrBcZ0)
-
Ain't never been excited for a genre where tinkering with a spreadsheet is good advice.
Yeah, there's a lot of blame to spread around on that one. Big reason I recommend spreadsheets is that a lot of people just give advice by pulling numbers out of their butt and they're often wrong. Still, it does bother me that a lot of the community use things like having a "bad" build to justify acting like dickwads. It takes a nice tool and turns it onto a scourge with which to mock casuals for playing a video game without using an outside app, which is silly. On the other hand, a lot of the current game mechanics are amazingly counterintuitive. I don't consider it a feature when one weapon can come from a higher level boss, have a higher damage range, higher stats AND lets you swing more often... but can still be a downgrade. Blizzard says they're putting a lot of work into making it more of a non-issue with the next expansion, and I wish them good luck on that front, but I'm not really holding my breath either.
-
See, just the fact that stats are such a thing to focus on instead of enjoying actually playing turns me off. I mean, I know min-maxing is a thing in any RPG, but usually it's only something a certain subset of players do. In an MMO, it's something everyone has to do to in order to be able to do all of the content. I hadn't considered that BioWare would make such a game since, at least for their last few releases, mix-maxing is a thing you can do but you can really beat any BioWare game with any build.
But they also released a multi demo video (http://swtor.com/media/trailers/e3-multiplayer-demo) and gosh it looks so much...like an MMO.
-
The sad part is if you can get enough people with good heads on their shoulders you actually can skip a lot of the min-maxing, at least for most fights. But that's tricky enough that a certain amount of overgearing is basically considered standard operating procedure for puggers etc.
I just watched that demo, and man, Bioware better have a Jedi tanking class up their sleeves. MMO players swarm melee dps classes like flies on shit even before you factor in lightsabers. Go, go tank shortage!
I kid, mostly. At least it looks like sabers help vs. other melee weapons, which would be a good start.
-
I'm really excited for the new Dragon Quest, but that comes out this week.
I'm kind of on the fence about DQ9. On the one hand, money's kind of tight for me right now so I should really avoid buying games at full price unless I really want them. On the other, I am a sucker for an RPG with an in-depth class system, which from all the import accounts I've read is the strongest part of DQ9. On top of that, apparently Enix has been really good about supporting the game with free DLC, which Nintendo has already said they have every intent to localize for the American version. It's a shame the multiplayer is local only, although I guess playing a turn-based RPG multiplayer isn't necessarily the most exciting thing in the world. I'm still kind of undecided, but I'm leaning towards getting it, especially since there's not a whole lot else coming out this summer beyond Crackdown 2, which I don't intend to buy on day one unless some friends rope me into it.
-
I am excited about Limbo

Crackdown 2
Eeeeeeee!
Now, I've gotta buy the damn console to play it. But if it's anything like the first one, then oh YEAH.
-
From what I hear(and have played) it's exactly like the first one except for everything they did worse.
-
I preordered it off Amazon, and it says it will probably arrive tomorrow.
I don't even know if I care though. I preordered without having played the demo, on a whim, because I got a super sweet deal on it (about $38).
Well, at least if it sucks I can trade it in and get more than I paid for it towards something else instead.
-
From what I hear(and have played) it's exactly like the first one except for everything they did worse.
Counterpoint: the UV shotgun.
That being said, I played the demo both alone and with 3 other guys, and it just isn't much fun solo. Crackdown is like Borderlands: co-op is really what makes it worth playing.
-
has anyone else played the backbreaker demo. what did you think of it.
-
Hey guys anyone actually still own a wii around these parts? Anyone play the new Sin and Punishment? Helloooooooooo?
-
cant wait for shogun 2

still think it's going to be an mmo? think again. there has been a movement in the forums that went to something like 16000 posts. soloers want more content, raiders shouldn't have all the fun.
bioware now seems to be thinking about it with the new thread they've posted.
it's well on it's way to being swtor, the massively single player online rpg.
-
They are apparently making a metro 2034. Sweet. And Mirror's Edge 2, although I guess that might be old news that I am just now hearing. Sign me up, although I will need a better computer before I buy even metro 2033.

http://www.giantbomb.com/quick-look-limbo/17-2852/ (http://www.giantbomb.com/quick-look-limbo/17-2852/)
update: just finished it. amazing game.
It's a very minimalist platformer. There are two buttons being used. A to jump, B to push and pull boxes and use various kinds of switches. There is no dialogue, written or otherwise, and apart from a brief blurb that isn't even in the game, and the very brief ending, there is no indication of a story. You wake up and make your way through spooky forests, spooky factories, and spooky rooftop cityscapes, all while solving challenging and clever puzzles (often involving gravity shifting mechanics, especially in the late game) that, with one possible exception late in the game, felt like a very natural progression, almost like what you'd expect from a Valve game.
Apart from a very, very few enemies (who never utter a sound), the game is empty of people, except for your own black silhouette (which, apart from the sound of footfalls, also never makes any noise the entire game). The game is purposely very bleak: everything is in shades of black and white. As I mentioned before, there's no dialogue and almost no story. The use of music and sound effects in a lot of the game is very sparing, and when they are used, I felt it was to great effect (mostly in the factory levels). Oh and also the ways you die (and you will die, a lot) are often quite gruesome, whether being shredded to bits by spiked wheels, watching your blood drip from the bottom of the platform that dropped down and crushed you, or being impaled through various parts of your body by spikes, among many others (accompanied by appropriately nasty sound effects).

The game is only about five hours long, even if you're like me and get stuck in a few places for a while.
sorry to bring this up twice in one thread, but I'm surprised, especially in a place like the QC boards, that no one has brought this up (especially as it seems to be getting glowing reviews all over the place). It seems like the sort of game we'd all enjoy.

Duke Nukem Forever

Starcraft 2 is coming in less than a week!
Civilization 5 is just around the corner!
*cries glass*
-
i have been putting off my sc2 preorder forever, i need to just break down and do it already
-
I seriously thought that it came out the 21. and not the 27., and I grabbed my preorder note of the collectors edition, and looked at it, and went "FUCK!".
Oh God it's gonna be so good.
-
Put another $20 towards my Fallout: New Vegas CE preorder today.
Fall needs to hurry up and get here, fuck this summer shit.
-
Oh man I'm glad I ended up not getting scheduled for Monday Night, because that's gonna suck for the two that are on duty for the midnight release of Starcraft. I need to keep working towards my preorders that I have right now, need to finish off paying for L.A. Noire...

someone just linked me to this. It's basically a fan-made King's Quest game. Has a quote from Roberta Williams saying she likes it alot and everything. Looks quite professional, and well-made, even if it is free.

I'll be back with impressions of it once I'm done playing (hopefully it runs on my pc)

I've spent most of the time over the last two days either at work or watching other people play Marvel vs. Capcom 3. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, since I really liked MvC2 despite being completely dreadful at it. There's something about the over-the-top fighting styles with triple jumps and 50-hit combos and the unique character opportunities provided by the crossover that really appeals to me despite my general apathy towards fighting games. It's just so much fun to watch, and I can make enough cool stuff happen even though I only know a few basic motions that it's still enjoyable to play despite constantly losing. Also, I love all the attention to little details, like certain attacks damaging the 'page' before it turns to a new one and every character having a tag-in quote for everyone else. When Hulk in tags in Iron Man he just screams METAL MAN, which I think is hilarious. Plus, it's got fucking Amaterasu from Okami (http://www.giantbomb.com/play-as-amaterasu-from-okami-in-marvel-vs-capcom-3/17-2959/) in it.
Basically, watching Capcom stream people playing the Comic-Con build over the last couple games has taken this game from "that'll be cool, I guess" to "WANT NOW" in my mind. I know I won't be able to play anything like them, but I don't care. I'm willing to be suckered by MvC3.

Dead Island
It seems that somebody is finally making a REAL zombie game. One that has an emphasis on survival and combat avoidance.
Ofcourse too little is known of it at the moment, and could be that it is a vapour. But i can hope.

Alice 2 looks like a gorgeous mindfuck, I'm going to love it.
Also, I'm a little interested in the Street Fighter x Tekken (and vice versa) games that's been announced. They've been throwing bits and pieces of gameplay elements from the two games that really do make a nicely improved central game.
-
bump'd because i don't want to start a new thread for it but
fable 3 comes out next month! i am obviously out of the loop because i totally thought i had to wait a lot longer or something. anyway, pumped.

As a former Populous addict, I am intrigued by From Dust (http://www.gametrailers.com/video/godly-powers-from-dust/705580#new_comment).
-
Oooo, I'm intrigued.
-
I've already mentioned that I'm excited about it in this thread, but I just want to reiterate that Marvel vs. Capcom 3 will be the greatest video game ever made. (http://www.giantbomb.com/play-marvel-vs-capcom-3-in-your-underwear/17-3345/)
They also showed Nathan Spencer from Bionic Commando and screenshots for Magneto and MODOK leaked, so they're almost certainly the two characters that will be announced at the Marvel games panel later today.
But dude.
Fuckin' Arthur.
-
Arthur and M.O.D.O.K. were the two characters I least expected honestly. Especially M.O.D.O.K.
-
Also Alternate costumes. I was talking to my friend that they should make real alternate costumes instead of that stupid alternate color shit they have in other games, and lord be praised they actually did such a thing. I do question putting in Spider-man's newest costume though.
-
I'm sure a lot of Marvel's stuff is done to tie into whatever they're trying to promote in print or film. Thor and Captain America have movies coming out soon, apparently X-23 is getting her own solo miniseries and that's why Marvel wanted her in, and so on.
As far as alternate costumes go, I just hope there's a classic Bionic Commando skin for Spencer instead of the reboot version. Bonus points if it's the one from Rearmed 2 with the awesome 70s mustache.
Also, from various panels and streams people managed to get a few more deconfirmations out of Niitsuma: Gambit, Silver Surfer and Squirrel Girl are all apparently out. I know some comic book enthusiasts were really hoping for the latter to be MvC3's Servbot.
-
Wait you're excited about Arthur?
No dude
Fucking MODOK
-
What the fuck.
-
Modok looks ridiculous (and I'm sure he'll be a bitch when people figure out how to use all his traps and shit) but Arthur just gives me a giant nostalgia boner. His goofy running/jumping animations, the armor falling off, his voice, all of it is so perfect and on top of that he looks like he'll actually be a lot of fun to play.
-
I think the one thing I want most from Marvel vs Capcom 3 is character specific endings like the first one. I don't think they'll do it though, they'd have to make an ending for every character they introduce.
-
They did for TvC.
-
This game looks like it will have a lot more characters than TvC though. Not saying they won't do it, just pointing it out.
