Title: $69,696.00 USD for a virtual item

Source: Player Purchased a Virtual Egg for $69,696.00 USD (http://news.mmosite.com/content/2010-02-06/player_purchased_a_virtual_egg_for_69696_usd.shtml)

Quote
Can you believe that? A virtual Egg can be sold for a stunning $69,696.00 USD. It just happened in Planet Calypso, a MMOG that used to announce the sale of a Space Station for $330,000. Sequence of the Egg sale is as follow:

Jon "NEVERDIE" Jacobs held a public auction Sunday, inside Planet Calypso, and sold the Virtual Egg to David Storey aka Deathifier. Deathifier owns "Treasure Island" in the game, a tax generating Virtual World Destination. NEVERDIE purchased the Virtual Egg for $10,000 USD in 2006 from a gamer who completed a unique quest. The Final Chapter in the Egg's History has yet to be written as thousands of players speculate what will actually hatch from the it and if it will be worth the extraordinary price tag.

$330,000 for a virtual Space Station! $69,696.00 for a virtual Egg! Are they insane?

Sigh, Second Life property has gone for substantially more.  Paying large amounts of money for intangibles is nothing new.

I thought that virtual space station was an investment that was going to make the money back.  I believe I read that in the kotaku or destructoid comments, can't remember which.  If the space station was a source of income the investment seems much more believable.  But an egg?  Seriously? I wish I had 10k to throw away.

Second Life property has been sold by Joe Hocking for substantially more.

Fixed.

Paying large amounts of money for intangibles is nothing new.

Previously I believe it was known as organised Religion.

I read about the space station, and it's really as good an investment as any. You're probably worse off at the stock exchange. But a virtual egg for seventy thousand dollars? I don't know what's likely to come out of it, but it looks less like a calculated investment and more like a very, very expensive lottery ticket.

I don't believe the size of the egg has been noted.
