Title: Is Hanners losing her fear of the unclean?
Post by: scrawney on 26 Feb 2010, 01:06
First, she plays with Dora's "Party Favours" (implied).

Next, she's stabbing Marten's finger and collecting his blood.

Now, she's going to invite a (effectively) stranger into her apartment?

Seems to me like Hanners is becoming more "normal".

The 'favours' was just an out of character moment to be ignored. (IMO)

As for helping Marten and Tai, it seems in character to me. If she didn't help with the finger it could become infected and gross and that would worry her far more so she takes action to stop it happening. And as for Tai she is looking out for a friend and trying to stop them getting dirty. I know with my OCD I worry about my friends getting dirty more than I worry about myself because I care about them that much.

Hannelore has invited a sort-of stranger to her apartment before, namely Marten.

The "party favors" were in character, even though she wouldn't want to think about where they've been, because it's been established that she's curious about what she can't have.

No, I would say this is fairly normal behavior.  The drawing of blood was brave, but she was still suited up for the event.  She doesn't necessarily fear human contact, just anything that comes out of humans.  So carrying Tai up to her apartment, she could do.  But if Tai happened to drool on her while she was doing that, she'd probably freak and spend the next hour in the shower scrubbing with steel wool.

Not necessarily, perhaps, but when Angus tried to thank her for cleaning Marigirl's room, we found it's still the case that Hugging Hannelore Heralds Heavy Hyperventilation.

You're right, I suppose I should amend that... Actually, I thought I remembered Hanners having more human contact, but going back, looks like my memory's faulty.  Ah well.

I think you're right: can't remember the strip number, but wasn't there one where Dora put a hand on her shoulder without triggering a breakdown?

EDIT: there is 1224, in which she initiated physical contact.

I was unaware hanners had a fear of the unclean. I thought she had an obsessive compulsion to keep things clean.

If not fear, then horror: 521, 1146, 1148, 1209, 1218, possibly others I don't remember.

Also, it's quite possible the hugging thing is more claustrophobia than generic fear of human contact, since she manages not to scream when Dora grabs her across the shoulders, and I'm pretty sure she's held peoples' hands before.

There's one where Faye (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1144) touches her and she doesn't hit the ceiling.  Then one where Marten (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1099) pats her arm and she doesn't react, although granted she was pretty upset about other things.

I think, though, that this (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1077) is one of the better examples of how she reacts to something dirty.  One moment she's perfectly fine holding a cat, the next minute she freaks when she finds out it's 'infected'.

Good catch!  1144 is about as much contact as Marten was making when he tried to reassure her about drumming.

In the case of Princess, I don't think it was an abstract response to the cat being sick, but a fear of being puked on.

There's always the one where she jumps into the arms of a firefighter (can't remember the number).

Yeah that wasn't a fearful emotion at all

That's what 1224 was.

i also think she is much more comfortable around people she knows. such as, she was afraid of angus hugging her but she can deal with being casually touched a little by her friends. and yeah she is making progress but she is still definitely not 'normal' or anything close to that.

Question: Is Hanners losing her fear of the unclean?
Answer: She must be. She actually allowed Tai in her apartment. No telling where that girl's been.

Is she losing her fear...I don't think she's losing it. I think it's more that she can manage it more capably. Having friends probably helps that a lot, she has friends that have reached out to her, and given how she met up with all of them in the first place that's probably very meaningful for her.

First, she plays with Dora's "Party Favours" (implied).

I got the impression that she was just interested to see, not that she wanted some one-on-one time with the Pulse Master 9000 (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=105)

You don't lose the obsessions or the compulsions, you just learn to manage them.

Would she manage better or worse without mom's money?

The money certainly helps her find ways to cope, but I think she's making her own money with her little business.  Of course, her mom's money helped when she was growing up.  Whatever she needed to cope, I'm sure she had it!  Including high priced therapy and meds...

It also allows her to not cope. I. e. replacing soiled clothing and furniture, purchasing cleaning supplies and equipment, (who else would have an industrial grade floor buffer for a one bedroom apartment?) and allowing her to obtain items no sane person would consider owning (Bio-hazard suit anyone?).

Point for akronnick. Inherited monetary advantages rarely make an individual stronger.
