Title: Vigigames.com - I guess I'm doing this
Post by: Johnny C on 09 Mar 2010, 00:31
Well.

Matthew, a friend of mine, bought a domain name and some hosting and put together a website about video games. He asked me and another friend of mine, Christian, to write for it. I waited until we had some content - or, to be honest, until I had some content - to post about it. It's called Vigigames (http://www.vigigames.com), and once this fucking semester is done and all of my work is put aside I'll actually be writing several articles for it - one on depictions of Africa in games and one on religion in Bioware's games, as examples. In the meantime, I'll be contributing to biweekly podcasts, and blogging on rare occasions. The other dudes, Matthew in particular, churn out a decent amount of writing on a regular basis.

The big thing about the website is that we try to write, to varying degrees of success, on a more critical level. I don't mean that we're trying to do what Variety does/did, which is review everything all the goddamn time, but that we're people with academic backgrounds who are interested in culture and writing about an aspect of culture that they love. So there are reviews, but we've got an emphasis on things which more closely resemble short essays on various elements of the video game medium. We're hoping that'll distinguish us a bit, you know?

So there it is. I guess if you like it you can tell your friends or whatever, but I'm not trying to write this as an ad so much as I am trying to share with you guys something I'm proud to be a part of. We're still very much finding our footing, but I hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoy doing it.

Yeah the first thing that struck me was how good the site looked. I like that. The articles are for the most part pretty short though, which I found surprising. Is that something that is likely to change as you guys get into it more?

Anyway I don't care enough about video games to follow any site closely, but I imagine that if I did care about video games, this is the kind of site I would read.

EDIT: come to think of it I am not entirely sure longer articles would be a good thing, I was just expecting some serious screeds based on the description you gave and article titles like "Utilizing Howard Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences to understand videogaming", and I was shocked when a lot of the articles were just a handful of paragraphs, instead of multi-page affairs in the vein of OverthinkingIt.com. I tend to gloss over their articles, though, whereas in the few pieces on Vigigames I've read so far, I haven't yet become disinterested with the writing and started to speed-read.

well the short articles are probably a pretty good idea for the type of people who would read the articles on this sort of site.  it works for destructoid and that's the site i use the most.

Man, I've been waiting for someone to make a website about video games. Big untapped market.

But no, yeah, it looks really good. I've read a few of the articles and they're better than standard vidyagame articles and blog posts. Except for the Final Fantasy one.

Yeah, gotta keep a lid on articles that basically scream "I'mna spew some shit out there about old games and then people will disagree with me. Also, I'm going to give each game a rating based on criteria known only to me." It just doesn't fit with the other stuff that's on the site at all and seems a li'l indulgent. Ya'll are better than that; I liked plenty of this Matt guy's other articles.

I agree with Jordan and Alex. Good stuff, lots of promise, but that Final Fantasy article blows.

I'm listening to it right now, I'm glad somebody (I can recognize your voice, but not the other two guys) brought up that JRPGs are declining on consoles because the Japanese consumers are migrating en masse to portable systems. Also, the futuristic Harvest Moon is Innocent Life, Rune Factory is fantasty-based. Unless the newer Rune Factory games have mechs in them, I only played the first one.
