Another World. It's like that cave level in Prince of Persia 2 (http://forums.questionablecontent.net/index.php/topic,23454.0.html) stretched out to the length of a game. The basic plot is this - You are a nameless physics professor, whose experiment goes awry when his building is struck by lightning at exactly the wrong moment, sending him and his desk to another dimension, full of danger and strange vistas. This is an adventure game, the kind they made before point'n'click devoured the genre. Which is to say, this is a puzzle game, but it's made up of abstract puzzles in gameplay, which nest further puzzles. Take an early example - You need to pass a corridor behind a destructible wall, but down the corridor is a guard behind a door who will lay down an impassable wall of fire if you break down the wall to get to the corridor. In order to pass, you need to take an elevator down one floor and destroy the circuit that's keeping the guard's door unlocked, leaving you free to escape while he tries to break down his door. Several of these challenges are truly vexing, as you'll think you're doing the right thing until you realize you're missing another 10-15 minute sequence. There is no tutorial, but the game uses approximately 2 buttons aside from direction keys. Advanced tactics must be intuited.
The game is made up of many puzzles like that, some of which are quite immense. This is an old-timey adventure game and as such you will die often, and there may be some backtracking involved. Which makes it all the more sweet when you figure out how to get past that ceiling shoggoth.
This is the Fifteenth Anniversary edition of the game, and as such the visuals have been touched up some and higher resolutions are supported (up to 1600x1050) It still looks like a particularly clean modern Flash game. Seeing as this is a sci-fi Prince of Persia, there are a number of similarities - There is no soundtrack, and the game is entirely wordless. The animation is actually quite beautiful. And of course there are several gruesome (and quick) ways to die.
I spent two hours on it before getting stumped. I'll figure this puzzle out yet.

(On another slightly more constructive note, the download just finished, so here goes)
-
on an even MORE constructive note, my download corrupted so i say fuck this game
-
"fuck this game"
-
Finishing this game on the Amiga was one of the proudest moments of my childhood.
Too bad I'll always associate it with ABBA since my mother was on some kind of annoying Swedish band kick.
-
I remember playing this game on my Amiga, and getting SO FUCKING ANGRY when the big, ham-fisted guards would catch my dude and punch his fucking face in. And oh god, that fucking gorrilladog thing, holy fucking shit.
I should get this again and see if I can work it out any better than I could back then.
-
pee ess: I am not on ADSL again yet so I am not downloading it, but when I do: is this the original, or the re-release version?
-
I had a demo of this for an old power mac a long long time ago that had that gorilla dog thing in it, and it has seriously haunted my fucking dreams ever since. Never bought the game though, the puzzle at that point was hard enough to where my 7 year old self never got to the end of the demo.

I don't know the answer to that question. I'm assuming it's re-release.
Also I'm working on a re-up, if that makes anybody feel any better.
-
I refuse to acknowledge this thread because it uses the European name of the game instead of the American one.
GOOD DAY SIR

FUCK YOU
NEW REUP

IT WORKS THIS TIME

You know I thought originally that the US title for Another World was Flashback (always loved the box art (http://www.vgmuseum.com/scans/scans2/flashback.jpg)) but that is actually the game Delphin made after this title.
What game did they come back with 2 years after Flashback, you ask? None other than this stone classic (http://tinyurl.com/yzj77z5).
-
I've I'd tried playing this as a kid I think I'd already be down two keyboards.
-
The US name for this game is Out of This World, actually. Flashback and Fade to Black are similar but unrelated.
-
Yeah I played Out of this World a lot and no thanks.

Yes, I was adding the correct title.
-
I remember that game, I used to play the demo of it with my dad. you avoid the tenticles, startle the grizzly bear, run back grab the vine before the bear mauls you horribly, then kick some worms before the bear catches up and then go into a tunnel, and my memory may be bad but I think you end up shooting the bear or someone else does.
-
I just tried playing this on my comp and it is quite difficult. I had to gamefaqs to figure out how to beat that black jaguar thing that's just a few screens in :| I don't know if I'll be able to beat this game...
-
Yeah, I'm stuck at a part in the city after the caves. This game is hard and super frustrating but still a lot of fun.
-
I used to have this on PC back in 8th grade. I remember something about a tower and always running out of ammo (?) trying to blast the wall down. I never had good luck in the game.
-
Yeah, when you blast the wall down your gun stops functioning. So you have to go down one floor and kill the power to the guard's door, so that when you blast the wall down you can run away instead of getting blasted to shit.
-
The section in the caves where you have to flood it out was pretty ruthless, I remember retrying that countless times.
-
Yeah that took me about 2 hours of banging my head against the wall. Now I'm stuck in the palace or whatever it is.
-
I just remember this was the first game I ever got that actually had the code wheel. I am excited to play it again.
-
Question, before I download: Is this going to work on my Mac?
-
I finished this game when I was a kid! Loved this one, and Flashback too.
-
The download link didn't work for me. Is it just me/my computer that's stupid, or has it gone down?
-
Whoops, I didn't replace the first post code with the correct link I guess. I just replaced it. Here's the working url:

Beat it yesterday in one sitting. I forgot how short it was. Also, I forgot how awesome it was. The hardest part was definitely when you have to drop the globe on the guard's head. It took me like 30 tries.
The scene where you open the gorilla-cat cages is freaking awesome, too. Man. This game was so good.
-
Just beat it. I also didn't realize how short it was. If I had known I probably wouldn't have been looking at gamefaqs so very very very much. But, in all honesty, I doubt I would've figured out what to do about that jaguar thing so very early on (and so many other things).
-
Just beat it.
Just beat it.
Just beat it.
Just beat it.
Ooh!
*wild guitar solo*
-
that reminds me i was readin through a big band chart the other day and in one part it said to play a "burnin' guitar solo" and it was the funniest thing
