Well apparently PotC is coming back but MR. and Mrs. Turner will not be present.

The less Legolas the better. And the less emphasis on half-assed, boring mythology and 4-second Keith Richards cameos, the better.
Good lord the 3rd one was terrible. And the 2nd one could've done without that entire stupid sequence on the island with the natives.
bluuuhhh

It's got Jack Sparrow and Cap'n Barbosa, minus the two annoying leads from the trilogy. Plus Ian Mc-Fucking-Shane as Blackbeard? I'm in.

the only one of these movies I liked was the first one. I hope my friends don't try to make me watch this.

Well if you hadn't fallen asleep you could have watched 1, 2 and 3 with me and Hat when you stayed at my place that time.

Hopefully Ian McShane isn't made to ham it up like Johnny Depp did increasingly throughout the series, and is just left to be essentially Swearingen in a pirate suit (obviously there will have to be less swearing, what with it being a Disney film). I will definitely end up seeing it, as I liked the movies in general, but increasingly disliked Knightly and Bloom's characters as the series went on.
I really hope they don't screw it up, though.

I probably would've stayed awake if we were watching Deadwood

Touche.

I've never understood why people liked the first one, much less 2 and 3.

The first one wasn't so bad. It dragged a bit at parts but for the most part it was a decent li'l adventure flick. Besides, it has nothing on Transformers in the needlessly bloated department, so even that wasn't such a big sin.

My kids love these... that should pretty much tell you what you need to know about them.

I like to imagine those movies as weird Monkey Island fanfiction films.
Somehow makes them a little more enjoyable.

Really? I mean, the third movie wasn't as good as the first two, but the way it ended...it was perfect. It just worked for whatever reasons it did and it left a satisfied feeling that even though the third movie was kind of a letdown, it ended on a note that was true to the storyline of PotC itself.
I dunno, I wish I could say it better, but I can't find the words for it atm.

That would explain why the first was good, and the second and third had good attributes but also some serious flaws.
Unfortunately, this means we are coming up against the movie equivalent of Monkey Island 4. May god help us all.

I like to imagine my life a little like that...
I enjoyed all the films, but I'd like more sword fighting. More sea monsters. More blowing up & sinking of boats. More like this: http://www.2kgames.com/pirates/pirates/home.php (http://www.2kgames.com/pirates/pirates/home.php)
I play this so much I keep getting obscure geography questions right at the pub quiz...(It doesn't have monsters though)

I recently found out that the dude who killed Blackbeard (Robert Maynard) is my ancestor.
I may watch this movie just for the hopes of seeing my great-great-etc, grand dad in it.
Also, Sid Meier's Pirates! is an awesome game. There really need to be more open-world sim games like that. But like, in space and stuff. Or underground.

It was decent, sure, but it had no business to be the gigantic commercial behemoth that it ended up being. Watching Johnny Depp chew scenery was mildly entertaining for a while, and it had some decent action setpieces, but really it was a stupendously overrated film even by the relatively low standards of summer popcorn flicks. I never saw the sequels because I was so apathetic after the first one, but I heard they were absolutely dire.
I do like Ian McShane a lot, though. He's good enough to elevate mediocre material into being enjoyable. Losing Orlando Bloom is always a plus, and I didn't mind Knightly in the first film but I can't say I'm particularly bothered to see her go.

I have an unhealthy love of the first POTC, don't mind the 2nd or 3rd (I have to stop the 3rd one in the middle when I'm watching it.) Of course, I'm going to see the 4th. Even though they're giving Jack a love interest. I have all kinds of Issues with that. Add in that the love interest is played by Penelope Cruz, and I'm not sure how I feel about that. I think not even Disney realized what a success the first POTC was going to be. In my tiny little college town, two months after the release of the movie, the movie was STILL in theaters in one of the largest auditoriums. This is a 9-screen theater and Big Fish didn't even come to that theater. And they had to do two showings when the university union showed it a month later. The DVD sold out the first day in our Walmart. To call it a success was an understatement.
The 2nd and 3rd suffer from "too many cooks in the kitchen" syndrome. I know Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio had to complete re-writes on the set, which ruined the cohesiveness of the film. I mostly watch the 2nd for the gorgeous scenery. I don't watch it for the plot. The third is just... a mess. I still enjoy it, but it's a mess.

I hope that in a family-friendly wink to his Deadwood character Blackbeard likes to call his crew a bunch of deck-scrubbing hoopleheads.

More like.... CAULK-SUCKERS!!!!!

Oh man can you imagine a Pirates of the Caribbean film written by David Milch?
