Title: Do you guys...
Post by: Heranje on 05 Apr 2010, 06:00
...memorize the number and content of every strip so that in a discussion you can say things like "but what about number xyz, faye did ć thing there"? Or do you remember the comic titles and find the numbers in the archives? Because those titles aren't that descriptive.

Every time I go in these forums, I am baffled by the QC discussion people's ability to whip out comic numbers at a moment's notice.

I mean, I've read through the archives a couple times, but that's just weird. <_<;

Nah. I just went back through the archive, made notes of each strip, put it in a Word file which I saved as a PDF file, and look back through it when I'm trying to reference when something happened.

I'd offer it to Jeph if he was interested in trying to maintain some semblance of continuity, but I don't think he probably cares.

I was going to make an "it's good that you have a hobby" joke, then I remembered all the useless stuff I spend my free time on.

And for the gaps in ONR's data, knowing a rough comic time and/or art style helps you zero in on it after a bit of bouncing around the archives. The downside is that sometimes you wind up on an inadvertent archive trawl.

I've been rereading the entire archives with my wife (we've been reading together for about 2 years but haven't managed the times to get back to where we started. We are close now though.) It's been pretty useful. Otherwise I just kinda know the time line and take guesses from the titles. Although, I only have quoted comic numbers a few times so far....

A combination of the ohnorobot QC search engine (http://www.ohnorobot.com/index.pl?comic=32) and jwhouk's summary (which he's been willing to share by PM). Sometimes I search for strip titles but encounter the exact same problem that you do.

Ohnorobot is best when you remember dialog from the strip you're looking for or another in the same arc. This usually works since Jeph's dialog is so memorable. The downside is that it's missing the most recent strips and has a gap at roughly 920-980. The jwhouk episode guide beats it completely on coverage, for strips like the boyfriendbot assgrab which have no dialog, and for anything where you can't remember the dialog or it's too generic.

Now that I've given away my secrets it won't look like I'm an obsessive memorizer any more. On the bright side it will be easier to conceal that I'm a nerd.

Hell, I just randomly throw out page numbers. (http://www.ohnorobot.com/random.pl?comic=32)  Sometimes I end up in a completely different universe (http://www.ohnorobot.com/random.pl?) though.

Yes.

A sample:

Quote
751   Swedish-design poking stick
752   Mild, Medium, or Southern Spicy BBQ? (customer with the Elvis hair)
753   Mom sends Marty a package: "I AM THE PRETTIEST PRINCESS" t-shirt!
754   Elephant seals, corsets, and mating season (Penelope strikes back!)
755   Penelope and the term "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend"
756   I am NOT crazy! "That's just what I'd expect a CRAZY PERSON to say!"
757   Pintsize has a peace offering for the Roomba ("void all of your warranties.")
758   Chariot race with the Roomba! (off the edge of the stairs)
759   Get a toothpick for Hanner's Hard Reset Button
760   OMG Turkeys 2006!
761   Chinese Delivery Guy! (non-speaking role, last "costumed" delivery character); Tai has her own social circle
762   Faye: "I wish I had someone to cuddle and watch movies with me." Sven: "Spider sense… tingling!" (Bimbo: That's just my chapstick…)
763   Boo-boo, Dora's stuffed bunny
764   Raven is shocked about Marten
765   Tai talked to Bailey… and it didn't go well. Then she, Serena and Ashley… hooked up. "Ornithologist" joke.
766   Drusilla of Boreheim Manor, by Rutherford Wainwright Ashecrofte – aka Jimbo!
767   Angus (still unnamed): "Where's the Cranky Brunette?" Daily Dose of Contrariness; Penelope: Bop you over the head with a Carafe.
768   Tai: "Trashy, poorly written, incredibly sexist towards BOTH genders, and the most entertaining thing I've read all year!"
769   That dude who always comes in…
770   19th Century Porn?
771   Introducing Tai to Jimbo – and Penelope's "vice"
772   Dora the Warmth Vampire! "A good corpse desecration joke"
773   Others who've seen Dora naked (and Tai hits on Dora?)
774   "The entirety of our culture is a vast conspiracy manufactured by the diamond cartels!"
775   Marty warns Tai about Faye
776   Adorable Butch Girl!
777   Jimbo: "Wait, what? You LIKED it?" Gonzo Romance Novelizing! Hunter S. Thompson would be proud
778   Dora & Faye "Girl Talk"
779   Entre nous Angus
780   Too stupid and self-centered to realize she doesn't enjoy matching wits with him. Plate Glass Window

EDIT: And a sample of the character list:

Quote
Gaines, Penelope (698) – Ex-bookstore worker (and former Pizza Girl?) roped into working as barista at CoD. Will's girlfriend after a rather unusual courtship. Doesn't care much for Angus' sass talk. Has a Twitter account, which she usually uses to comment on more esoteric issues, like books.
Genevieve (676) – Another blonde ex-conquest of Sven who corners him at a bar – and Marten hilariously tries to hit on to "distract" her so Sven can make his escape.
Giraffe (1376) – Friendly animal with a long neck at the NoHo Zoo that licked Hannelore on the head. She started screaming and, as a result, was asked to leave.
Girls, Sorority (1278) – Pair of girls who talk about the tattoos they plan on getting as they leave Coffee of Doom; Dora didn't care much for them.

Harmonix Guitar Shop Guy (931) – Guy who sold Marten the 1970 Gibson SG guitar (for most of the money he won in that bet with Hanner's mom).
Harriet (1162) – Sven's lawyer. She's impervious to his charms; she prefers his money (in the form of checks). Faye mistakenly thought he was his latest "squeeze".
Hot Topic Goth Chick (46) – Goth gal whom Faye insulted over the contents of the faux indie store where she was working. Looks a lot like Raven.

Intern, Surrogate Punching (209) – Just what it says on the label. He got beat pretty bad by a woman having twins before coming in to "help" Faye.

That's much more practical than what I achieved the time I tried to analyze the frequency of character appearances in strips. I got to 1200 or so… I did demonstrate Faye had displaced Marten himself as the central character for a time. Now  i think they're even—or it may be a triad with Hanners.

I will.  I'd say you have no life, but obviously you do - and it revolves around QC!

Oh, and you might want to contact Jeph / the webmaster about running a Cast List link whle you're at it - no sense letting all that work sit around.  Y'know, now that you found your purpose in life, an' all.

Remembering the strip is the easy part.

Finding that strip in the archives and posting a link to it with a suitably witty quip before anyone else does, that takes dedication.
