So I'm writing a grant for my school to spend a month in Ireland studying Irish poetry for creative writing credit, but I am realizing I know nothing about the country I didn't learn from Warren Ellis comics. I am pretty excited about the idea, but really, I am just 100% clueless in every single way. What do I need to know about this place outside of Dublin and Belfast existing as cities, and that I probably want to head over to Scotland while I'm there and get all cruddy on silly good single malts.
Also maybe actually finally meet Tommy.

If you're going to the really rural places bear in mind a few things:
The locals have no need for ATMs, etc.
"Regular" buses means twice a day
Everyone is extremely friendly and will not stop talking to you.
-
I mean I can pretty much go anywhere and do anything I want, as long as I am reading and writing poems. I just don't know where or what those things are.
-
When are you planning to go because the Galway Arts Festival (http://www.galwayartsfestival.com/) is in July and it is probably the biggest annual Arts festival in Ireland.
There is also the Galway Music Festival (http://www.galwayearlymusic.com/) in May if you were more inclined to go for that kind of poetry but overall Ireland is a pretty great place and it would be hard to not be inspired whilst over there.

I don't know if this is a dumb question or not, but have you ever read Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt? If not, it's an absolutely amazing autobiographical book about growing up in Ireland in the 30's - 40's. Not exactly how I imagine Ireland is today, but some insight of how things used to be can't hurt.

Having lived here in Ireland/Belfast the best part of thirty years, the only things to bear in mind are that most of us aren't all syphilis ridden alchoholic poets and that the novelty has worn off on 'the troubles'
I suppose in the past the unfortunate side of (Northern)Ireland's recent history has shaped how the rest of the world outside the UK sees us; but in actual fact the only real difference is in the weather and that we dont get the Old Spice commercials that the US does. Everything else is pretty much the same, well asides from a clump of odd shaped rocks on the North coast and the fact that we have castles and stuff like that.
So yeah, come here and get drunk with us, steep yourself in the history, get your school or college to get you over here for a good time. Dont expect us to be wearing shamrocks and quoting begorrah etc though :-D
If yer really into the whole poetry gig, have a go at James Joyce if you haven't already.

I am realizing I know nothing about the country I didn't learn from Warren Ellis comics.
For the life of me I can't think of Warren Ellis comics that involve Ireland.
-
I know that the Dirty Three recorded a tune called "Irish Red". Maybe he means that Warren Ellis.

One of my favorite Authors, Anne McCaffrey lives in County Wicklow

Read Eoin Colfer. He lives in Ireland too. And that seems to be the only criterium for inclusion in this thread.

my mother was born in Wicklow! When I told Odi this, he laughed. I am guessing Wicklow isn't that great a place.
Kieffer, maybe you should talk to Odi about stuff to do with Ireland? Seeing as he lives there and is kinda cool and all.

Hey thanks Eris that is the first useful advice in the thread! How do I find him though?
Also I meant Garth Ennis, dammit.
-
Could always PM him. He should still go by Supersheep I think.
Oh hey here (http://forums.questionablecontent.net/index.php?action=profile;u=5469) he is.
