I used to love space-based flying games. Limitless flying and ridiculous ships battling all over the cold expanses. Are there any recent games that pull it off decently that aren't MMOs?
I generally only play on XBOX360, but I have a decent PC setup (top of the line five years ago. SIGH)

The X series is pretty good for fighting in space. It also has a strong trade element and a really open universe. The latest is X3: Terran Conflict and it's quite a good price on Steam at the moment I think. It plays quite well on my older desktop, which is probably a similar spec to your PC.

I played the hell out of Freelancer, but I understand it wasn't really everybody's thing.
-
When I was a kid I played a lot of Freespace, I had loads of fun with that game. You can get the first and second Freespace games on gog.com for a fair price, which at gog.com means barely anything. I'm planning on buying it again some day.
You might also be interested in the fact that the Escapist's Yahtzee (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/profiles/posts/Yahtzee%20Croshaw?view=articles) also used to love space dogfight games, and has set out to create one. You can read about some of his progress.

There's this game called Shattered Horizon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dd-2dZMDAGw) that I always thought looked really cool.
It's not a spaceship flight game, but it's played in space with thruster-equipped spacesuits. I've always wanted to check it out but my computer can't handle it so I've never bothered.
Probably not exactly what you're looking for, but it's worth a look anyway.

if you don't mind looking up an older game, i recommend tachyon:the fringe. good space combat, great story. and even without that, the best reason is the main character is voiced by bruce campbell.

Hey, I was just thinking about this! I bought X3 recently and am enjoying it pretty much a lot, although it's not the perfect game I want it to be.
-
Man. It looks like all the best space sims were made 20 years ago.
-
that's about the size of it.
-
Another great space game is Homeworld, an RTS in space makes flanking a much more serious business. Cry in anguish as your defences are no good since the enemy is flying in from not the back, not the sides, but above and below and oh my GOD.
It's fun when you figure it out, though.

I used to play wing commander 3 heart of the tiger and wing commander prophecy along with the old xwing v tie fighter game and they were pretty good.
-
Yeah X-Wing Alliance is still one of my most favourite games ever
-
I took some advice and am downloading X3. I will let you know how it is in a week AFTER IT DOWNLOADS ALL DAY AND NIGHT FOR SEVEN FULL DAYS.
-
Yeah, it is quite a big game. Although unless you have an even slower internet connection than me I don't know how it's taking an entire week.
Also, a warning: the voice acting is hilariously terrible.
-
not even hilarious. it's just terrible
-
Got it installed. Boy does it start slowly. When do I get to go faster?
-
Depends who you chose to start with. If you went with Terran you bounce about between combat and slightly tedious travelling quite a bit. If you start as, say, the bankrupt assassin, you're almost always fighting somebody. But it's more difficult to get to one of the plot sectors. The plots themselves are designed to be drop in/drop out mostly as you choose, so the pace is generally as fast as you want it to be.
-
I suppose that makes sense. I started as the Terran. I spent most of the two hours I played flying from place to place on autopilot.
Maybe I'll start over when I get some time and be someone else.
-
The best thing about that game was the 10x time compression.
-

Making sure you're hitting 'J' every chance it's possible. I think that's the default button for the time compression.
-
Yeah, I was using it. Unfortunately, the second mission involves flying three or four systems away, which takes forever even at 600% compression.
-
It's not so bad once you get a jump drive. Then you can just instantly travel between sectors. You can find them for sale in a few sectors. I believe the PTNI Headquarters has some for sale. (I recommend getting a sector map from one of the many X3:TC websites there are. Depends how much you want to assist yourself)
-
You can go to options and make it 1000x.
