Carrot cake with cream cheese frosting? Now I know what I'll be having for dessert. In hell.

Also, I'm sure Hanners will be glad to note that the three of them are (for the moment) arranged in order of pinkish-purpleness, thanks to Marten's...pink boxers?

Oh, give it a few hours, you'll be fine.  You'll be hallucinating and be making even worse decisions thoughout the day, but at least you'll catch that insomniac high.

So that leaves Pen-Pen and Faye in charge of CoD.

Let the takeover begin.   :D

And Carrot Cake isn't Carrot Cake unless it has Banana Iceing.

No, no, it's gotta be cream cheese.

And who amongst us can say that there hasn' been a time that you did the same thing as Dora?  A burst of hyper-productive insomnia, then exhaustion at work!

We've seen Marten's pink boxers (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1574) before...

For comic #1671...

1. Love the cute expression on Hannelore's face in panel #3.  All that is missing is the tongue-licking expression of "yummy."

2. The hair-detailing is a lot better for this strip, not as 'streaky' and 'spotty' as before (as I had mentioned in previous posting), with the best improvement with Hanner's hair (though that could be the blonde colouring blending it).

3. Ah post-'wired' energy crash...  (though not post-sex 'wired' energy :|)  Been there, regained consciousness elsewhere that.

4. Carrot cake is good, though not my first choice for cake.  Also agree with Kugai: banana icing over cream-cheese frosting.

5. Is Marten wearing pink boxer shorts...?  [EDIT ADD: saw Carl-E's link.  Guess he is]

I believe he may have turned into a lady from the waist down. That is my explanation for it.

Aaaaaaaaaaanyway, what a champion dodge of the question of whether he liked it or not. Stating exactly what something is, and not whether you like it or not is just classic :-P

I'm fine the day after an all-nighter. It's the next day that I'm wiped out, even if I've got a good night's sleep in between. I'm hoping the cake is just a figment of their hallucinations, or to put it another way: "The cake is a lie".

Look, I know Tai and Jimbo aren't a couple, but their appearance would make a nice occasional shakeup of the mundane. While I'm at it, howsabout an appearance of Mrs. Chatham and Mrs. Marten? Okay, now that preceding question can be widely interpreted...

One problem I have is that I'm so awake the day after an all-nighter, once I've caught my second wind (microsleep, maybe an hour or two napping), that I wind up pulling a second all-nighter, and passing out at some point the next day without realizing I'm tired.

From now on, Marten, two words: afternoon delights.

I guess I'm jaded. Marten's shorts look like boxers that have undergone an accident—no, not that kind, the sort where one washes whites with something both recently purchased and red.

And who amongst us can say that there hasn' been a time that you did the same thing as Dora?  A burst of hyper-productive insomnia, then exhaustion at work!
When haven't I done this is more like it. As in far too often. I'm getting less and less able to bear through it 'unscathed,' though. Getting old sucks, although not as badly as the alternative.

Tai and Jimbo? Brilliant! Oh, I know she's a lesbian, but screw her. Sexual preference always gets steamrolled by plot advancement. I learned that from Joss Whedon.

No, it's pretty indistinct in the first panel. Shows up better in 2-4 though. Since Jeph does the comic on a Mac it may stand out more to him -- is color on Macs still washed out, or did they finally get around to fixing that?

Shouldn't it be Steve and Cosette? Although if it was Steven and Ellen I can see how Cosette could then shake things up.

Most foods are disgusting.  You'd think vegans would be relatively safe, except now we're finding salmonella and e-coli from everything from lettuce to tomatoes to sprouts.  In fact it's become such a problem that the US government has declared lettuce to be a hazardous food in the same category as ground beef or raw chicken.

Jeph, some advice about your vasectomy whenever it happens.  First, do exactly as the Dr. says and basically sit on the couch for 2 days.  Second, frozen peas are your friend...buy several bags of them.  Third...no condoms = awesomes for you, no pill = awesome fro Christie, so it's a win win and everyone's happy :)

And strictly comic related stuff and for the few women here who were talking about hair coloring, check out bettybeauty.com  I'm sure you all will thank me.  Guys, feel free to check it out too for all the women in your life (except your mom an sister unless you're from one of those states where that stuff is "accepted").  *wanders off playing a banjo*

Vasectomy.  Fun.  I had mine 16 years ago.  If it's anything like mine you'll think "that was no big deal."

Until the local wears off.

Arrange some time to not do anything but sit around with a cold pack on your crotch while you heal up a bit.  It's a good time to catch up on DVD's.

Don't put your laptop in your lap.  ;)

Ma!  Hand me the 12 Gauge, thet damn crow's back!

And on a different note - go for the scapel-less vasectomy.  Mine was over in less than 10 minutes and only took about 12 hours to recover from.

Just don't be an idiot like a friend of mine.  He had one, went home, made love to his wife and then decided it was a good idea to do some heavy lifting later that night.  Spent the next three weeks flat on his back unable to tolerated any sensation in that area while his balls shrunk down from the size of oranges.

are you really colorblind or is it just your monitor?

1. I'm really colorblind (or, as my wife likes to point out, "color-deficient"). Red-Green. I can see shades of blue, but when you add red to it (red+blue=purple), I start to mix it up with black.

2. The first two strips with her dye job showed more black that dark blue/violet (at least, according to the WhatColor program I had to use to check the pixels).

3. "Drop a tactical TMI on my head." This is a quote of win.

Take it from someone who couldn't con her way onto the Itty Bitty Titty Committee with an Ace bandage and a come-along, Faye shouldn't be so glib about it.

I don't think she's saying she doesn't want kids, just that the thought of 3, 4 and 5 am feedings is making her internal organs somersault at the moment.

It took me a while to get the millipede ref—I think we called em' pillbugs (which a google reveals is in turn most likely a woodlouse, but it's the image I have now). I like Dora's hair a little better now that it has 'bloomed,' or whatever you'd call it.

Deciding to have children is a major life choice.  Ergo, Marten will not make it; he will instead cope with whatever someone else decides.

Millipedes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millipede) and woodlice (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodlouse) are very different critters, although some varieties of both are capable of rolling themselves up.

Hm...I think I like the Dora artwork there better than the current Dora artwork. Which gets me thinking...I think Jeph has mentioned this before, but isn't Dora the one character he hasn't really settled on a design for? Like Marten and Faye seem pretty consistently drawn, but Dora's always subtly changing. Hm.

Anyway, Dora's hair is differently purple again. I kinda like that it keeps changing around. :D

Faye looks so awkward. Good for her though. Interesting that she invited Marigold too...

1. Mmm, fresh fuckin' bagels.   Perhaps with whipped (the light-to-eat kind, you gutter minds) cream cheese and lox slices.

2. It was a nice touch for Faye to have Angus bring Marigold over as well since she (Marigold) could use the hanging-out company too.  This also means that Hannelore will be there at the YouTube party too, which is always good for humour.

3. Missing Llama.  Answers to "DeathLlama"(? hard to make it out).   Might have been funnier if it had read: Answers to "Dalai-"

4. I enjoy Dora peroidically changing her style(s), though I may not like each change in of itself.  To me it is very appropriate for someone of Dora's personality and character-type to change things up now and then purely for the sake of Change.  (EDIT ADD: Also, I do notice Dora's hair is brighter purple, much more improved and noticable now)

5. Speaking of stupid (or at least silly) YouTube clips, somewhat related to llamas: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1gZ0x8AVaBI (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1gZ0x8AVaBI)

Oh, give it a few hours, you'll be fine.  You'll be hallucinating and be making even worse decisions thoughout the day, but at least you'll catch that insomniac high.

And before the hallucinations come the delusions of grandeur and megalomania, which is really nice.

(Unfortunately, after something over 48 hours that is replaced by feeling pretty much dead. I have that right now.)

It will probably go well enough, but it strikes me that in real life, this would be a TERRIBLE idea, and very bad for Marigold. Faye has admitted to having some feelings for Angus, and they haven't really interacted since to defuse any of the romantic tension, and this invitation to come over is definitely her reaching out. As such, it is basically an excuse for her to have a makeshift non-date with Angus and she's just throwing the invitation to Marigold into it to low-ball the situation. It would be one thing if she already DID have plans, and invited Angus and Marigold along, but no--she's making these plans specifically for Angus.

This to me is a Very Bad Idea. If she's going to make plans just for Angus, I think she should only invite Angus--go on a date, as Dora, suggested: it can be something very low key, with few expectations, but private.

Otherwise, it just seems like with all the as-yet unresolved and yet brought-to-the-surface romantic tension between Faye and Angus (just look at how stammery and awkward she's acting around him already), poor Marigold is in for an evening where they both try their hardest to "act normal" and not be flirty or obviously crushy around each other, and pretty much fail.

Sure, Faye should continue to hang out with both Marigold and Angus--and Angus should continue to hang out with Marigold--but not on what is basically Faye's and Angus' unspoken first date!  :x

Right, to have plans you have to know people, and everyone Marigold knows was just invited to hang out with Faye, Marten and Dora.

This is by no stretch of the imagination a date—it's a gathering. Faye's too chickenshit, to use the colloquial term, to set up a date. Too, she realizes she'd look something of an ass to ask Angus for a date after her 'pass the test' speech. Hell, he hasn't even completed the matching portion! And then there's the essay question…

To be fair, though, since it is a gathering, and Angus and Faye are not dating (as per Faye's conditions. and possibly Angus's need to settle the Marigold issue) Faye more or less has to invite MG (hey, finally found a nick for Marigold that doesn't make me long to hurl!). It's a Southern thing (such customs may hold true elsewhere, too, but I draw on what I know). Ten to one MG does have something else to do, even if it's merely lying uncreatively to Angus. The real question will be whether Angus buys it.

It will probably go well enough, but it strikes me that in real life, this would be a TERRIBLE idea
I doubt even her most frantic fans will accuse Faye of having good ideas when it comes to her own romantic relationships. 'Terrible' pretty much sums up her track record thus far.

I think you're right that, considering she ended up making it an "everybody gets together" sort of thing, not inviting Marigold would have been rude. It was already "not a smart way of going about things" that she WAS too chickenshit to just ask Angus out already, and instead created this whole gathering on-the-spur-of-the-moment thing as an excuse to hang out with him.  It's just that if all her friends were uninvolved in the drama, like Dora and Marten and Hannelore, it would be a garden-variety "let's support our friend and let her have this opportunity to hang out with Angus without actually dating him." They could give them some space (or else interject their company to defuse any awkwardness), kind of look away with indulgent smiles at appropriate moments, etc.  But when one of the friends has feelings for Angus, THEN it becomes a terrible idea, rather than just a middle-school level silly one.

I agree, this is one of those 'it seemed like a good idea in theory, not in practice' ideas.  Though I will royally laugh if it ends up with Marigold punching out Faye after she finds out Faye's stealing her man; a scenario which seems altogether likely given the amount of booze that the QC cast seems to have readily available.

I guess that Llama didn't make it to Llama School -- should've gotten directions.

To me it is very appropriate for someone of Dora's personality and character-type to change things up now and then purely for the sake of Change.

Dora does change her look a lot.  Her personality sometimes reminds me of Ms. Vaguely Dissatisfied (center square): http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a125/subcutaneous/lifeinhell-girlfriends.jpg (http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a125/subcutaneous/lifeinhell-girlfriends.jpg)

I do wish Angus still wore his glasses -- maybe his favorite pair broke and he's wearing contacts until he gets them fixed?  Or maybe Jeph got tired of drawing glasses on so many characters.  *shrugs*

For some reason, I'm picturing Faye's gathering turning into a 'girls on the couch, guys in the kitchen scenario,' I don't know why.  It might be amusing if Marigold ends up having a better time than Angus.

What I have an issue with over how Faye approached Angus is this (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=4) and this (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=12).

Now, I know you can claim "character development" and "growing as a person" and all that crap, but seriously? She can say, "I'm bored and ravenous" to Marten, but "We're, uh, gonna hang out and drink some beers and watch some stupid Youtube clips" to Angus?

Maybe, just maybe (and I might get in trouble for this) she likes Angus more than she did Marten? Don't kill me. And we know she didn't want any romantic entaglements with him- so she could treat him like any other friend- but Angus she is planning on possibly dating, so it's a bit more nerve wracking?
Title: Re: WCT (Weekly Comic Thread) 24-28 May 2010
Post by: akronnick on 26 May 2010, 22:31
I think the difference in approach is because of a difference in Faye's intention.

With Marten, especially in the pre-toast-inferno period, Faye was aggressively on a friends only posture. Threats of infectious stabbings come to mind. With Angus, I think she wants to open up as more than friends, but she is unsure of how, and is uncertain about the outcome.

Also, I recall (and the archive masters will surely find it) a recent where Faye confided to Marten that even though on the outside she seemed strong and assertive when she approached him, on the inside, she was scared shitless.

Well taken point by jwhouk. I'd argue that part of the answer is that Faye is now walking around without her armor on, and the bravado she displayed in the early days was overcompensation.

EDIT: 1462 is the one where Faye confesses to having been uncomfortable in strip 4.

1. Llamas and alpacas, always good for a humourous endeavor.  As by my earlier "Star Wars Alpacas" link.

2. I was not creeped out by Hanner's knife until she stabbed into the watermelon blade away and point-first.  Not exactly a typical method for cutting into a watermelon... :-o .

3. I too miss Angus wearing glasses, I like that look on him better than non-glasses (contacts?).

4. I also like Marten's front-open hoodie look.  Must take Jeph a lot more effort to draw though(?).

5. And for something somewhat related to current strip and QC running themes, I present "Llamas of Arrakis"...

There are alpacas in the field behind my house. They're probably the perfect farm animal: no smell, quiet, hilarious to look at. When lambs were put into the field I was treated to the sight of alpaca jumping a metre into the air when they tried to chase the lambs.

In the last panel, Dora prophetically says, "Maybe he thinks if he can get under your skin, you'll eventually become attracted to him."

I confess that I don't generally open the front door with a 20cm(?) blade in hand. According to Wikipedia that overhand knife grip is "sometimes referred to as the Serial Killer (or Murdering) Grip due many villains in slasher films using it to kill their victims; the first movie popularizing it was Psycho in the infamous shower scene."  Hmmm... Perhaps Hanners has been listening to the rapping penis (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1171) again, and the water-melon was just for practice  :-o  though somehow I'd see her more as a "thumb on the blade and strike upwards" girl...

I don't thnk that first guy was Angus.  He really didn't seem pleased with the sass, and he seemed like an older guy who was actually used to service.  Same hair color is about all.  I'd believe it if he muttered something like, "Christ, why do I keep coming here?" as he stalked away.

The second one, maybe.  Same glasses.  Seems more like Jeph adopted a crowd member into the cast!

Then suddenly - bushy sideburns, argyle sweater, argumentative - ya think he's got some Scottish name orrrr something, laddie?

Stereotyping - interfering with character development since Homo Sapiens first met a Neanderthal!

Hmm, I think the potential creepiness in panel one stems from the fact that Hanners' knife is pointed outward toward Marten's general crotchal region.  But she doesn't have her stabby-face on, so she's non-threatening.  I had forgotten all about DJ Phalliz -- thanks for the reminder, Akima!

I'm looking forward to seeing Winslow as master of ceremonies over bad YouTube night.  He's one of the few characters who still retains some innocence.  Although having said that, I wonder if the "bad YouTube" featured will include all or part of the Star Wars Holiday Special . . .  Seriously, watching that whole thing is like a rite of passage, or maybe one of the circles of hell.

The thing that troubles me is this: who answers their door knife in hand? Obviously, Hanners was about to sacrifice open the melon when Marten rang, knocked, or what-have-you. Normal behavior would be to sigh, put down the knife, and then go to the door.

Of course, I was taught as a child (nevermind how) not to walk around with sharp objects in my hand. Perhaps, in space, no one cares what you puncture.

Since Marigirl is invited, why not use Momo-tan, who has holographic projection equipment built in?
They don't know she's coming. Note Marten made sure Hannelore was coming before he made his request. Awfully polite fellow, that Marten. Doesn't say 'Hello, Hanners, how are you, and why have you got a knife in your hand, for the love of god, don't stab me, think of Dora—she'd really fuck you up if you did that, you know. I heard that Vespavenger chick still doesn't walk right."

On the contrary, there are bad, strange, unseemly, unsavory, disturbing and delightful turns, just to name a few. Offhand, I'd say the thread has taken a mildly bloodthirsty turn, with overtones of whimsy. That's to be expected when Hanners starts playing with cutlery, and even more so when Jeph gives us onomatopoeia to accompany it.

Runch! Squealch Melon falls open.
Marten: "Hey, that melon looks pretty good!"
Marten reaches out to snag a protruding chunk
Runch! Squealch Marten looks down to see knife hilt protruding beneath his fifth rib
Hannelore (disturbing smile plastered across her face): "No one touches my melon."

Is the QC winter over?  Hanner's watermelon has me thinking summer.
I think its early spring, what with how things are now-a-days it isnt too far-fetched to be able to buy a watermelon out of season.

It's either that, or training for the zombie apocalypse.

Hanners possesses a distinct River Tam quality. She'd probably be good to have around if your ship gets attacked by Reavers.

I actually had this happen before my eyes when I was in tenth grade. The girl was leaning over talking to me before class started when her support system gave up due to considerable stress. I didn't think* of either a cool line like "Oh, no, the Levee broke," or one more accurately reflecting my reaction like this one (http://www.needcomics.com/Locus/page/248/). Which is probably just as well.

*Actually, for honesty's sake a period should be applied here.

This would be much funnier in the plural, but then I'm a dirty old man.

And as for Marigold, I can understand the embarassment, but I don't think that narrow chested Angus' sweater is going to cover up the problem....

Very much so, considering the way "the gang" normally dresses. Dora's the only one who glams it up a bit, an then only for special occasions like meeting Marten's Dad. This could be another manifestation of Marigold's social ineptitude, but I suspect Jeph of going for the low-cut frock to justify a spaghetti-strap bra for the whole "boob suspension-failure"* joke. I confess that I've never had a bra collapse on me, but then Marigold has bigger boobs than my Grandma, Mama, and me put together.

I can understand her in a dress.  If she is like me, she doesn't get a chance to wear many "just because."  So, even a small thing like this is an excuse to put on something cuter than would be worn just hanging out at home.  I would say she had gone too far if she had done a fancier than normal style with her hair, or was wearing makeup or heels or something else highly unusual.

Angus will be with two woman who have a romantic interest in him, and one now clearly has the upper hand, cleavage wise. Tension has already led to something snapping - it may do so again, socially speaking.

Angus and Faye really should open up, as tactfully as possible, to Marigold about whatever their current relationship can be called.

Maybe not this night, it's probably still too soon, but they shouldn't wait for too long. In the long run, secrecy risks to cause more harm than openness, even if it's bound to hurt either way. If she finds out on her own, she's likely to feel betrayed for having been left in the dark.

Although, tact being neither's forte, they should get some help for that. I'd say Marten (for his overall kindness), and Hannelore (for being Marigold's close friend, and for her ability to distantiate herself from relational shenanigans) would be prime candidates to give a hand.

1. I wish I knew more girls with such bra-bursting problems as Marigold (and possibly Faye) .

2. I- ah... noticed the faint arrows highlighting Marigold's "levee burst and downflow", was that intentional on Jeph's part?  or meant to signify Angus' involuntary reaction of looking in that direction?

3. I also agree it is good to dress up nice now and then.  The best example and reason why, sung from this classic musical show and WALL-E's central themed song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmHVAfQEsEc (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmHVAfQEsEc) (with lyrics included!)

They're intentional, at least that's how it looked on the UStream. I think they're just creases from the dress taking on its newfound load.

Oh, Cosette. I thought we were talking about Marigold, though she's been on twitter for a while, and the "Huh? How's that?" was in response to the comment about Pintsize. And I didn't look at the twitter profile pictures before commenting.

The first utility of any and every new media technology is porn.

You could have just added this to your post directly above it, you know. And not completely missed the point. Of course I didn't mean the testing phases, when the most mobile thing photographed was a window. But once it was on the cusp of commercial viability and the shutter time was less than five decades, the first use was by rich dudes to take pictures of naked ladies (and don't take that literally either, I mean the first subject matter to take up a substantial percentage of the shots taken).
