I love discovering new things.

[edit] this has never included $50.
(Actually, now I remember, it has - I found £300 in a strongbox hidden in a piano that was left in the first house I bought - that's £300 in 1969 money.  As we had also bought "contents of house, without inventory" for £20, it was genuinely ours.)

I love watching people.

Ok, that sounds weird; I don't mean it in a creepy way. I love the feeling you get when you just sit down at the window of a cafe, and watch the world go by around you. I love it even more around here; where I live is full of such unusual people that something always catches your attention. It's not even just looking at what the people look like, sometimes it's the snippets of conversations, or the the expressions two people are giving each other, or the little kids asking about the world. Sometimes you will also see the happiest dog walking past with its owner, just happy to be a dog; that always brings a smile to my face. Watching people makes me feel so anonymous; people don't notice me, I am just part of the background. That gives me a little insight into themselves that they might not show anyone else, and even if it isn't something they would keep private, I like to think it is so I feel special.

Oh man, little kids. I was at a ballet show last night and there was a little girl sat behind me who can't have been older than two. The first dance was set to Dvorak and the second to Tchaichovsky and when the first one started, she whispered to her dad "is this Tchaichovsky?". I was amazed she could even say it, but when the second one started and she went "oh no, this is Tchaichovsky" I was just speechless. I have never met a 2 year old who could recognise one of Tchaichovsky's lesser-known compositions. Kids are awesome.

well, if you think of miracles as extremely unlikely, bordering on impossible, events (as I do) then, by definition, every single subatomic particle in the entire universe is a miracle.

well, if you think of miracles as extremely unlikely, bordering on impossible, events (as I do) then, by definition, every single subatomic particle in the entire universe is a miracle.

Such things are astonishing but by nature utterly commonplace. Something which exists on an infinite level - always and constantly - is the opposite of unlikely. Subatomic particles are certainties.

Mind blowing to consider but not in any way miraculous by your own definition.

the number of times something happens does not change it's likelihood of happening. Your chance of getting any given face of a 20 sided die is 1/20, roll it once, roll it an infinite number of times. Still 1/20.

just because something is commonplace doesn't mean it's any more or less likely.
Title: Re: Love thread
Post by: Scandanavian War Machine on 31 May 2010, 17:14
okay, let's move up a step then; subatomic particle may have been a little presumptuous.

let's say...every atom is miracle.
Title: Re: Love thread
Post by: evilbobthebob on 31 May 2010, 17:16
This all comes down to how you define a "miracle". Subatomic particles are pretty cool. The way they appear, annihilate, and disappear in a total vacuum is really weird. What's miraculous is that our universe works at all. There are so many ways it could break, like if the strong nuclear force was a little weaker, or (presumably) if there was slightly more antimatter after the Big Bang.

I love physics.

Title: Re: Love thread
Post by: Scandanavian War Machine on 31 May 2010, 17:52
let's say...every atom is miracle.

This is the same, no? Atoms indisputably exist and thus cannot really be seen as likely or unlikely.

Imagine sitting down at a table in a casino whereby you can bet on the existence of atoms. Which way would you bet, bearing in mind you know that atoms absolutely positively exist?

what? I don't...huh?

I'm not talking about the existence of atoms in general. I'm talking about the likelihood that any given atom will form. I mean, obviously atoms exist. They're doing it right now.

Post by: tania on 31 May 2010, 19:21
if we're defining a miracle as the occurrence of an extremely improbable event, putting the existence of atoms into this category doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me given the fact that just about every single thing in the universe is made of atoms and that physics is a pretty well understood science by this point. you would have to figure out how to compare the odds of atoms existing to the odds of atoms not existing in the universe, which is pretty much impossible to determine.
a better example of a miracle by this definition would be if a stone statue that were made of atoms waved at you. atoms are everywhere, however the chances of every single randomly colliding atom in the statue's arm moving in exactly the same direction at the exact same time for the stone to physically move and appear to be waving at you are extremely, extremely slim. thus, were one to observe this they might be quick to label it a "miracle" since it is such an improbable event that it would appear not to follow the laws of science at all. it is also improbable in a way that we can calculate pretty easily with some knowledge of the behavior of atoms (they randomly collide), the behavior of stone (it doesn't move) and how often on average stone waves at people (never, as far as we know). however, as a lady of science i stay away from the word "miracle" anyway and prefer to think in terms of probabilities anyway so it's all sort of lost on me.

jace and/or friendly mod i would really prefer if you took that image down, thanks.

What is love?

Love is a pretty frenzy (http://cassland.org/sounds/LoveIsAPrettyFrenzy.ogg)

Quote
ROBERT JONES
The Muses Gardin for Delights,
Or the fift Booke of Ayres,
onely for the Lute Base-vyoll, and the Voyce. 1610.

i

LOVE is a pretty frenzy,
A melancholy fire,
   Begot by looks,
   Maintained with hopes,
And heightened by desire.

Love is a pretty tyrant
By our affections armed.
   Take them away,
   None lives this day
The coward boy hath harmed.

Love is a pretty idol.
Opinion did devise him.
   His votaries
   Is sloth and lies,
The robes that do disguise him.

Love is a pretty painter,
And counterfeiteth passion.
   His shadowed lies
   Makes fancies rise
To set belief in fashion.

Love is a pretty pedlar,
Whose pack is fraught with sorrows,
   With doubts and fears
   With sighs and tears,
Some joys but those he borrows.

Love is a pretty nothing,
Yet what a coil it keeps,
   With thousand eyes
   Of jealousies,
Yet as one ever sleeps.
