Holy crap check this out. (http://kotaku.com/5559801/rock-band-3-teaches-you-to-rock-with-real-guitars--keyboards)
Cliff's Notes:
- Keyboards
- "Pro Mode" that teaches you how to actually play music via
- Cymbal upgrades for the drums
- Stringed guitars
- Three part harmonies (from Beatles Rock Band)
- Metric. Dio. Night Ranger. Hendrix. The Doors. Rilo Kiley. Ozzy. Joan Jett. Jane's Addiction. The White Stripes. Queen. STP. The Cure. Huey Lewis and the News.
- As always, RB 1 + 2 + Lego + Green Day + DLC are importable into 3
I am so pumped for this game I could play a trumpet with my cock.
-
i will not buy it but will probably end up playing it someday
-
I'll get it, but I'll have to wait to buy the piano accessory separately. Also, find room in my house for the piano accessory.
I kind of wish they did add trumpet, since it's the one thing I have and can play pretty well.
-
if it's a fully functioning 25 key MIDI keyboard, and i already have one of those, can i just use mine?
-
I think you guys are missing the important part here.
QUEEN
Yes, I will be buying this game just for that. On the day it comes out. Queen!!!
-
Well, there's already like a bajillion Queen songs in Rock Band.
-
They are actually only in Lego Rock band, and then there is a downloadable 10 pack, to my knowledge. I want just a straight up pure Queen rock band. I'm excited that they will already be included in this one.
Guitar Hero has a lot of Queen, but I cannot get pass the annoying gameplay to actually play the songs.
-
Yeah, that's a crapload of Queen.
-
Not to a huge Queen fan.
-
this exchange is so much more fun when i think about "queen" meaning helen mirren
-
More info including pictures of the new guitar (http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/11/rock-band-3-hands-on-preview/)
Just...holy goddamn, look at that beast.
-

Yes.
Also, the keyboard will come with a strap so you can play it like a keytar. Yes.
-
Pro mode is going to be a bitch and a half.
-
There goes my dreams of getting a new guitar for this one
The Fender Mustang Pro-Guitar Controller (the one with all the buttons, not the real electric guitar) will retail for $149.99, which means that the Squier Stratocaster is likely to be ... pretty expensive.
Also the keyboard alone is supposed to cost about $80
-
haha
my keyboard was half that
-
so wait the other controller is basically just a squier strat?
can you use, like, an actually good guitar instead?
-
If your guitar supports MIDI out, yes.
-
Where is my Andrew WK songs?
-
The engine can't support that much partying with the added instruments.
-
They printed out their setlist at E3
(http://cache.gawkerassets.com/assets/images/9/2010/06/500x_rock_band_set_list.jpg)
-
That man's face is pretty telling.
-
I wonder which song he's pointing at?
(it better be RAINBOW IN THE FUCKING DARK)
-
I thought I liked Guitar Hero and Rock Band because it was amusingly NOT like playing the actual instruments.
I guess I was wrong.
-

Headphones On
-
I'm 85% certain the song he's pointing to is actually Taking Back Sunday - Liar (It Takes One to Know One).

Something the entire internet seems to be missing is that this shit is completely optional. It's even optional if one person in the room wants to play real guitar and no one else wants to. It's an added feature you don't have to spend money on if you don't want to.
-
I understand that it's optional.
I still stand by my original statement.
-
The thing that I've been wondering is if it's even possible without the pro guitar.
-
What do you mean?
-
Can you play the teaching mode with the standard Xbox guitar or do you need the new Pro model that has more buttons and the strings?
-
You need the new Pro guitar. Or, though I can't confirm this for sure, a real guitar that can do MIDI out. It is impossible to be taught how to play a guitar if you don't have strings, though.
-
basically i can't wait to own everyone at metric and rilo kiley songs
-
What's way way way more important than anything is that next week is CCR week for Rock Band 2 which means Rock Band 3 will be launching with a metric asston of CCR:
"Bad Moon Rising"
"Born on the Bayou"
"Down on the Corner"
"Fortunate Son (Original Version)"
"Green River"
"I Heard It Through the Grapevine"
"Lookin' Out My Back Door"
"Proud Mary"
"Run Through the Jungle"
"Travelin' Band"
"Up Around the Bend"
"Who'll Stop the Rain"
-
I'm conflicted, I already have Fortunate Son, but it will sound like shit compared to the new one.
-
guitars with midi outs?
do such thing even exist, other than the one they are making for it?
-
"Lookin' Out My Back Door"
CCR (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RqZhM75aGMg) or COB (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZbfYK4I3rZM)?
-
guitars with midi outs?
do such thing even exist, other than the one they are making for it?
yeah and you don't really want one
-
seems like something i'd distrust. like if the fake rock band guitar actually costs as much as a real guitar and then also has strings and instead of using it to just play rock band you could just get a decent guitar and i guess my point is it is really difficult to defend in the context that it was previously easy to defend rock band/guitar hero with
-
Man did you not notice the hey this is optional Jesus Christ and also hold on let me check if I want to learn guitar by A) sitting by myself all alone so I don't annoy everyone else while playing terribly and never getting any feedback about how shit I am or 2) getting to practice while my friends have fun playing fuckin' Rock Band and even getting constant feedback from the game and so I can learn better and faster shit man this is a tough choice and holy shit there is also a version that is a real fuckin' guitar who the fuck cares how people choose to spend their goddamn money to enjoy their music and/or music games fuckin' judgmental prick.
-
Also, I mean, if everyone who got Guitar Hero/Rock Band actually picked up a guitar and made music instead do you really think that would be a good thing? Because that's a scary goddamn world to me.

Honestly this is sort of how I feel. With respect to thinking this is probably a way better way to learn to play guitar for me, personally, than sitting picking out the easiest tabs I can find on Ultimate Guitar and plucking my way through those. I honestly don't have the concentration or focus to drill on that when the only thing I really get back from it is "Oh wow now I can sort of play Turn the Page" or whatever.
Playing Rock Band though? Shit yeah I can get behind that. I lost days and days of my life to that, mainly wailing on the drums. It's fun, it gives instant reward and feedback and yeah, it's a great social experience. Is forking out for a probably shitty guitar at the same expense of a real one a waste of money? Probably, but likely no more than buying the plastic instruments cluttering up my bedroom right now, and definitely no more than, say, the DLC I've bought for the game anyway instead of maybe going on holiday, or buying new clothes, or giving to Haiti or something generally more productive than buying data.

seriously? if you walked into a room and saw a dude wailing on that you wouldn't just turn around and walk back out? what happened to standards? what's become of us?

there's absolutely no way that you honestly think that your a) scenario is the way people have actually learned guitar since time immemorial so i'm going to give you this opportunity to recant and temper yr argument before i lay down the hammer w/r/t why this probably isn't the democratization tool you think it is, nor is it the democratization tool that music as a culture really needs
-
With it being optional though, I'm finding it very difficult to see how you can see this as a bad thing. I also don't see how you could think it isn't a beneficial thing since putting guitar lessons into game form would most definitely increase many folks likelihood to actually do them for the reasons that maxusy3k and Ozy mentioned.
What can I say, stats/scores are a wonderful drug.
Also, I kinda like the midi guitar? it is neat. Silly, but neat.
-
just because it's optional doesn't mean it's not stupid. it's just optional and also stupid.
-
hey look everybody it's Jack White
-
keep in mind i still think rock band/guitar hero own
-
guitars with midi outs?
Alternatively, there are a number of devices for audio engineering that include guitar-in and midi-out capability, so you could probably run a regular guitar through one of those. The downside is that all the ones I know of are fairly expensive, but if you could find a cheap one it might do the trick.
-
Want some new songs for cheap? Well, Microsoft can help you (http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/04/live-a-palooza-discounting-hundreds-of-music-tracks-on-xbox-li/)

hey look everybody it's Jack White
There comes a time (http://achewood.com/index.php?date=07112005)

Another thing I've been thinking of, is Pro the biggest thing they're going to be pushing on us for Rock Band 3? I watched the opening to the second one recently and it's a perfect example of how much they wanted us to do the Battle of the Bands thing, so I was wondering if the new opening cinematic will reflect that.
-
First Rock Band 3 DLC (free with preorder):
New Order - Blue Monday
Talking Heads - Burning Down the House
Deftones - My Own Summer
-
Official list released (http://kotaku.com/5618286/harmonix-confirms-entire-rock-band-3-setlist)
God damn I am looking forward to singing Free Bird
-
I'm so excited that some of the previous Guitar Hero only songs are coming over. Rock Band is just a much better platform to play and enjoy.
Some of the 'new' stuff is pretty great, too!
-
Meanwhile, the new GH's track list has also been announced and has Bad Brains and Neil Young on it. Which would be mega more exciting if they ever had any decent DLC ever.
-
The Rock Band 3 setlist is unique among rhythm games in that there's actually very few really terrible bands on it. Like, there's a lot of songs I'm not chomping at the bit to play, but the only ones that make me annoyed that I would have to play at some point are Avenged Sevenfold, HIM, and Slipknot. Everything else is bearable at the very least, and there are some really inspired choices.
-
Oh goodness Tegan and Sara and Metric and Rilo Kiley and Blondie and Joan Jett I wish I was a lady because this list has some fantastic female vocals.
And then fucking Sister Christian and Free Bird and Space Oddity and yes, Harmonix okay you win.
-
Honestly, I'm extremely underwhelmed by the setlist, looking over the artists, there's only one or two songs I really want to play. Its not that the bands are terrible, I just don't like them, and I know the people I would play with would want to play things I don't like.
-
Translation: I am a big fat party-pooper
-
So...umm...yeah.
It's out. I got it.
Have only played a handful of songs so far due to needing to attend to programs, but the game is making me giddy as ever.
-
I like the new interface and the graphical upgrade. Haven't been able to do much cause I want to play through it with my cousin, also cause I got Fable 3.
-
Have not nearly played through all the songs yet, but have jumped into ones I really wanted to try.
Pro mode drums is a lot harder than you'd think it would be. Very hard to get out of the habit of hitting a tom when I should hit a cymbal.
Pro keyboard is insane.
Bohemian Rhapsody is so, so, so much fun to sing in this game, and quite hard solo. Rock Lobster is hilarious on vocals.
The game seems much more party-oriented than Rock Band 2. While there still are some hard songs in the game (Freebird), it's not nearly as vicious as RB2. Let the DLC account for challenging charts, this game is about playing catchy hits at parties. Still fun to play alone for me though, especially since pro mode makes drums new for me again.
Hope the Squier Stratocaster comes out sooner than later, I don't want to try pro guitar with the MIDI guitar.
-
So... if I don't actually have any instruments yet, how much am I going to have to blow on this dang ol' game? Are there even any bundles being offered?
-
The one thing that really sucks is that all the cool jackets you can get for your character can only be unlocked with Pro Instruments. My cousin was not happy about that.
