So, for those of you who don't know: the Electronic Entertainment Expo is a yearly convention held in Los Angeles that is pretty much the biggest single event in gaming. All three platform makers and most major publishers have a press conference where they announce their new games and talk smack about each other. Then there's the show floor, where developers give demos to the press of all these shiny new games, give interviews, all that good stuff. Occasionally a guy with an extremely fake tan talks in absolutely absurd marketing speak about games for tween girls for about 20 minutes, it's great. Anyway, it's going on pretty much all next week, so this is the thread to talk about all the crazy shit that's going down!
First, some stuff that got announced before the show:
Harmonix finally announced Rock Band 3, a game pretty much everyone knew existed already. It's got a keyboard peripheral, a crazy new guitar controller, a pro mode that's supposed to actually teach you music, and a whole bunch of other crazy shit
Activision announced Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock, because it's Activision and everything is annual whether you want it or not. It's got... a story-based 'quest mode' narrated by Gene Simmons. Yeah. They also announced DJ Hero 2, but honestly, who the fuck cares?
Sega is doing what they do best and milking nostalgia from the era when they actually made good video games through releasing a bunch of their old Dreamcast games through downloadable services. Sonic Adventure and Crazy Taxi are the only two announced so far, but you can fucking bet Sega will ride this train as far as it will go.
WB announced a new Mortal Kombat reboot (simply titled Mortal Kombat), and it actually doesn't look like garbage. (http://www.giantbomb.com/the-next-mortal-kombat-trailer-brings-the-pain/17-2621/) If you're one of the few thousand people on Earth who cares about non-Capcom fighting games, then that's cool I guess.
Atlus is continuing their quirky indie publishing deals and putting out the sequel to last year's Lost-Vikings-esque platformer Trine, as well as the next game from Ace Team, aka the dudes who made Zeno Clash. It's called "Rock of Ages", so I can only assume that it's a 4 player Def Leppard simulator. I call the one-armed drummer in advance. But more importantly, they're bringing Etrian Odyssey 3 to the US, so I get another brutally hard dungeon crawler with bitchin' Yuzo Koshiro music. I'm pretty happy about that.
Square-Enix announced a 4-player sidescrolling action game with goofy character designs and an even goofier title, Necromachina (http://www.giantbomb.com/square-enixs-new-rpg-side-scroller-necromachina/17-2629/). It looks pretty much like co-op Strider, so I'm down.
Square-Enix also announced Dungeon Siege 3, which is being developed by Obsidian. It's... not exactly what Obsidian typically makes, but hey. They're continuing to get work, so I'm OK with that.
Some stupid Kingdom Hearts PSP game is coming to the US, I guess. Kingdom Hearts sucks and you're a bad person if you like it.
2K finally gave Civilization 5 a proper release date: it's coming out September 24th. Sorry for everyone who believed that September 1st date was anything more than a placeholder, but you only have to wait another 3 weeks.
THQ announced Red Faction: Armageddon (http://www.giantbomb.com/red-faction-armageddon-emergency-transmission/17-2587), where you will play as the grandson of the main characters from Guerrilla. It takes place back underground this time, and apparently miners fuck up and release some aliens that were dormant in the depths of Mars. Getting a very strong Aliens vibe from that trailer, it could be cool.
Sony announced Killzone 3, and it will utilize the advanced 3D technology that .01% of the market has the TVs to support! Way to use that 70 million dollar budget on things that create a better user experience, dudes.
They also announced Infamous 2, so more electric superhero open world shenanigans coming soon. We'll see if Activision announces a Prototype sequel that will come out a month apart so they can be constantly compared to each other again.
Twisted Pixel announced that their new game Comic Jumper will come with DLC for their last game, the excellent but frustrating 'Splosion Man, packed in for free. Pretty nice bonus for their existing fans.
And finally, games that we don't know anything new about (yet) but have new trailers that I'm going to dump in here anyway: Deus Ex 3 (http://www.giantbomb.com/the-full-e3-trailer-for-deus-ex-human-revolution/17-2580/), Vanquish (http://www.giantbomb.com/heres-platinums-vanquish-in-action/17-2599/) (what), Crysis 2 (http://www.gametrailers.com/video/e3-2010-crysis-2/101144) (whaaaaat), and X-COM (http://pc.ign.com/dor/objects/14252327/x-com-project/videos/e32010_xcom_e3trailer_60910.html).
OK, so now what we can expect to see:
Release dates and game lineups for both Project Natal (rumored to be renamed to the Wave) and Playstation Move. Blatant ripoffs of Nintendo's innovation or actually making good on motion controls in actual games? You decide!
Official unveiling of the 3DS, possibly a release date for that as well. Maybe some Nintendo launch games, maybe only tech demos, it's impossible to say.
Probably an official announcement of the Wii Zelda game that has been acknowledged at Nintendo as being in development since forever ago.
Something crazy from Valve. They canceled their Portal-themed event but said that something will be replacing it. Portal 2's been pushed back to absolutely no one's surprise and Newell said that card thing with the stealth G-Man face was fake, so who the fuck knows? It'll probably be pretty good though!
An announcement of the multiplatform Insomniac game from EA. It was a big deal for both of them a few weeks ago so I'm sure they'll talk more about it at E3.
For that matter, I'd expect to hear more about the Activision-Bungie partnership too. I think Activision only announced that before the show in the first place because their stock price was tanking after all the Infinity Ward shit blew up.
A release date and hopefully more details about Fallout: New Vegas. It's still apparently on track for this fall, so if it doesn't get a firm date by E3 that's officially time to start worrying.
And finally, for the leaks and/or rumors:
If Gamespot's floor plan of the convention center is to be believed, EA will be announcing both Mass Effect 3 and Dragon Age 2 at the show. Hardly a stretch, since both of those games are more or less open secrets anyway, but hey. If they're really announcing ME3 already, maybe they'll finally clear up exactly what those job listings for multiplayer designers were all about.
All kinds of crazy rumors about the 3DS hardware specs. Does it have a tilt sensor? Does it have an analog stick? Depending on who you believe, the processing power is either around the same level as the Gamecube or 'just below the 360 and PS3'. If the latter is true, it marks a huge shift from Nintendo's usual policy of releasing low-cost hardware for cheap and making a profit right away instead of eating losses up front like MS and Sony do.
Speaking of which, since Sony is finally pulling a 'rats fleeing the sinking ship' on the PSP hardware and giving a ton of free games to anyone who will take the hardware off their hands, it's rumored that they're preparing to announce a PSP2 as counterprogramming to the 3DS. However, since the PSP Go failed so spectacularly I'm wondering if that put the kibosh on their plans to make a digital-only follow up.
Gametrailers TV is running their traditional pre-E3 special tonight at 11 o'clock on Spike and they promise several 'exclusive' reveals. They specifically mention one of gaming's legends 'finally' announcing his project, which I'm betting is the Ken Levine project that has been mired in shadow for years.
Sony is supposedly going to unveil an entire 3D initiative that nobody will care about. What other games will support it beyond Killzone 3 are anyone's guess.
Rumors of an Uncharted 3 announcement are pretty persistent as well. Considering Sony kind of blew their first-party game load early in the year, it wouldn't surprise me.
Also, a Resistance 3 billboard showed up on a movie set forever ago, so it'd be pretty surprising if Sony didn't have anything to say about it now. This will hopefully be the show where they finally get Team Ico to say something about Last Guardian as well, although people thought that about E3 last year and all we got was a rehashed version of the same trailer they announced it with.
This is even more tenuous than most of the rumors here, but I've seen a couple people on message boards talking about having an 'inside source' telling them of a Persona 5 announcement. It seems out of character for Atlus to announce a SMT game at an American show, but the series (and especially Persona) is getting more popular over here all the time so I guess it's not out of the question.
Thaaaat's just about all I can think of from a quick scan of the blogs. Anybody have other news or rumors that I forgot about? Anything you'd like to see happen, big or small? There'll be more to actually discuss once the show starts, but I figured it'd be fun to speculate for a bit before the actual conference starts rolling.
-
they're totally covering this thing tonight on spike (i think), but I have some inconvenient plans to hang out with.....friends.....tonight so I'm gonna have to miss it.
I'm sure the internet can catch me up on Monday.

Crysis 2 (http://www.gametrailers.com/video/e3-2010-crysis-2/101144) (whaaaaat)
Wait, do people have the hardware to even play the first one yet? I kid! Kinda. And yeah, I realize that it's more or less the same engine regardless.
-
friends
what, yr xbox isn't yr friend?
-
that hussy and I aren't talking right now
things were said, discs were scratched, you know how it is
-
I guess Valve is doing something. Or maybe not.
-
I can't wait for all the games announced and the opinions on every site
Also, drinking game (http://www.1up.com/do/feature?cId=3179773)

The crazy part is: that's the 360 version. Or at least, that's the version Crytek has been showing to the press at every event up until now. I dunno what kind of fucking wizards they have at Crytek's tech department, but if putting out a game that looks that good on consoles finally breaks up the UE3 monolith then I'm all for it.
-
Wait, what?
I didn't read any background material when I clicked on that posted link, so I was actually thinking "It kills me how they always use primo hardware for these demos," as I watched. I was feeling all surly about it and everything. I mean, I know we have PCs that can handle that now but in the era of console ports I feel pretty justified about my skepticism.
[EDIT]
I just watched it again and I noticed a fair bit of pop in that I didn't catch on the first viewing, so it seems a lot more plausible to me now, even if it was nowhere as bad as the worst UE3 stuff I've seen. The fact that I had to look for it at all should be seen as a compliment. I know that Crytek has claimed that they've been optimizing like mad since Crysis, but I usually consider that sort of thing to at least be half marketing speak. I would love to come away from this impressed.
[EDIT AGAIN] I forgot about the whole Cryengine 3 deal. Oops.
-
I guess I don't know for sure, but I do know that according to every preview I've read, Crysis has been using the 360 version for all press demos so far.

Actually, that's kind of the point. They appear to have scaled back the graphics and the physics for the third CryEngine so it can run on consoles. I'd assume the non-jungle setting helps with the performance, as well.
-
Well, one of my guesses was off. The 'gaming legend' reveal from Gametrailers turned out to be Itagaki's new game, called 'Devil's Third'. It looks like another Japanese response to Gears, but with more focus on flashy melee disarms/kills and less balls-out Japanese brand crazy than Vanquish. It's being published by THQ in their first attempt to co-opt the EA Partners business model. Gameplay wise the trailer looked pretty much like you'd expect from an Itagaki-made third person shooter, but the graphical style was a lot grittier than Dead or Alive or even Ninja Gaiden, for what that's worth.
-
Square-Enix also announced Dungeon Siege 3, which is being developed by Obsidian. It's... not exactly what Obsidian typically makes, but hey. They're continuing to get work, so I'm OK with that.
Weeeeee!
-
The team behind DS3 made Mask of the Betrayer, and I've only heard good things internally, from people who aren't shy about calling out bad ideas. It's coming along pretty well, apparently. There will be a behind-closed-doors demo at E3.
-
Well Mask of the Betrayer is still the best game Obsidian's made to date, so I'm willing to be convinced. I hope that they can hammer what Obsidian's actually good at into the Dungeon Siege framework, though.
-
Now that there are wizards everywhere in the industry, the screens of Crytek work don't really have the wowee-zowee factor they had a couple years ago. In fact, reading an article on Crysis 2 I yawned and turned the page. Still, visuals aside I'm prepared to check out what they're trying to offer in terms of the rest of Crysis 2.
I once heard rumours of a ninja announcement for Battlefront 3, but I suppose that was wishful thinking, huh.
-
I'll be happy if Valve talks about any of these:
Half Life 2 Episode 3
Team Fortress 2 Engineer Update
Left 4 Dead 1 DLC
Source Filmmaker
-
I highly doubt there's gonna be any Left 4 dead 1 DLC on the horizon from them.
-
There is the Passing DLC for Left 4 Dead 1

Maybe Left for Dead 3?
-
Now that would make many people angry.
-
Left 4 Dead 1 DLC
Maybe you should just buy L4D2?
-
Are you all ready to Kinect?
-
Maybe you should just buy L4D2?
I preordered it.
Rumor has it they're making a L4D1 add-on campaign to explain how Zoey, Francis, Louis, and Bill wound up in the deep south.

Star Wars Unleashed II (http://www.gametrailers.com/video/e3-2010-the-force/101182)
mehhh
-
I'm a big fan of the Dungeon Siege series (although I haven't beaten DS2 on account of it being way too freaking long for a simple hack n slash game), and I like Obsidian since it has a lot of the guys that made Planescape: Torment and Baldur's Gate 2 so their games tend to have stuff that I really like. I'm looking forward to it!
I've got a gut feeling that Portal 2 is going to be mind blowing and awesome enough for Valve to just give away Portal 1 for free like they did, recently.
As for BioWare probably going to announce ME3 or DA2... Jeez, slow down, people! I'm a huge fan of your games, you Canadians, and I buy them opening day. It seems like yesterday I put down 120 bucks for ME3 and DA2, so can you pace yourselves a bit?
-
Fuck that.
I mean, DA came out last November. For those of us who don't buy every damn sequel that comes down the pike it's more than enough time between announcements. I probably buy less than 4 titles a year.
-
Fair enough.
ME1 and DA were announced several years before they were released, anyway. I'm just thinking with EA pressuring them it's going to come out way too soon.
Oh, and I forgot to comment on KZ3. 3D aside, I think it'll be very good. KZ2 is the best console shooter I've ever played, and that's without split screen. KZ3, apparently, is going to boast fully (probably more like: fully enough) destructible environment and will run at 60 fps. If it keeps the same amount of gameplay and graphical polish KZ2 has, I'm all for it.
-
Well, MS's presentation was boring, pointless, and lame.
Highlights:
- Fable 3, Oct. 26
- New 360 model, $300, 250GB HDD, built in wireless, out this week
- Project Natal is now Kinect, looks even more like a cheap attempt to grab Wii users, adds voice control, launches Nov. 4
- ESPN will be streaming to XBL
- Timed CoD DLC exclusivity on 360 continues with Black Ops
I was hoping so hard for Hulu streaming.
Dammit.
-
Hulu's gonna make you start paying for them anyway, might as well stick with netflix
-
I have Netflix and I would pay for Hulu. It fills a niche Netflix doesn't: watching what was on this week rather than 2 years ago.
-
hey if you want to throw away money i won't stop you
-
Wait, how do they go about charging money for a free service?
Also oh my god Fable 3. I know next to nothing about it and I'm already excited. And the Star Wars Kinect game looks kind of cool.
-
All I want is for Eidos/Squeenix to show off Hitman 5 which I'm pretty certain is not going to happen.
That and Deus Ex 3.
Also I'd be super OK with more Civilization V being shown off.
-
Wait, how do they go about charging money for a free service?
By making it not free anymore? http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE65760K20100609
also yeah i am trying to limit my intake of fable 3 propaganda because that's how i've enjoyed the last 2 games. a lot of people complain they don't live up to the hype so i just pay no attention to the hype and enjoy great games.
-
also yeah i am trying to limit my intake of fable 3 propaganda because that's how i've enjoyed the last 2 games. a lot of people complain they don't live up to the hype so i just pay no attention to the hype and enjoy great games.
This exactly. I preordered this awhile go, because I've loved the last two so much.
Also,
Well, MS's presentation was boring, pointless, and lame.
Highlights:

About fucking time. Shit.
-
hey if you want to throw away money i won't stop you
Well I mean, I have three options:
1) Pay for Hulu
2) Pay for cable
3) Pirate
Qwest has got on my ass a metric fuckton for piracy, so that's out. I hate paying $50 a month for 80 channels of nothing I'm going to watch, so that's out. I'm totally willing to pay $10 a month for recent TV on demand. Hulu it is.
-
there are some shows that are going straight to netflix already. now i guess it is still a problem. but i mean i don't really watch tv besides netflix instant so i guess i'm not the right guy to ask
-
EA's presentation!
Highlights:
- Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, Nov. 16, looks great
- Dead Space 2, Jan. 25, also looks bloody fantastic. If the first one was RE4, this one looks like what RE5 should've been.
- Medal of Honor, Oct. 12, June 21 multi beta starts, definitely targeting the Modern Warfare market
- Battlefield: BC2 Vietnam expansion announced
- EA sports crap
- Sims blah blah blah console release
- Crysis 2, 3D, pretty, Holiday 2010
- Bulletstorm, Feb. 22, looks wicked fun, very much a Cliffy B game
- New SW:TOR trailer (http://kotaku.com/5563339/old-republics-e3-trailer-takes-the-fight-to-alderaan)
Other, non-EA thing:
New Metroidvania coming for XBLA.
-
over saturation of the war game markeeeeeettttttt
-
Because it wasn't saturated enough already!
SW: TOR could theoretically make me play an MMO...if I could afford it. I would much prefer KOTOR III.
Also a full release of the storyline and some statistics for all the spaceship classes so the RTS mod I am running actually makes sense in the Old Republic period.
-
And Fable 3 trailer (http://kotaku.com/5563369/fable-iii-e3-trailer-asks-you-to-join-the-revolution)
-
Also I'd be super OK with more Civilization V being shown off.
This. I'm pretty much incapable of getting truly excited about Civ, but somehow that doesn't stop me from sinking a few hundred hours of my life on each one that comes out. So I'm curious.
-
Wait, how do they go about charging money for a free service?
Ask the Wall Street Journal
-

I am a bit of a stat nerd, so it makes me a little happy that I have things like Raptr and Steam to keep track of my game time (even if it is a little depressing) but I am mortified to think of how much I've played Civ IV since only about 230 hours of Beyond the Sword are logged in Steam and I played the game a lot more for the years I got it before I purchased it digitally.
-
woaw, nintendo is making "goldeneye" revamped!
-
Awesome, a name and video for the new Zelda
-
So, uh. I can't so a highlights thing of Nintendo's show because I don't have 7 hours to talk about how fucking incredible it was.
-
Maybe I'll do it in a few minutes, but overall: holy goddamn, Nintendo knocked it out of the park. It's like some kind of bizarro world from 2 years ago, where Microsoft pissed away an hour and a half on gimmicky bullshit and Nintendo showed a ton of awesome looking games.
-
Nintendo:
- More on Epic Mickey
- Old games getting new clothes.(New Kid Icarus, Kirby, Starfox, Donkey Kong)
- New Zelda info. Will use motion plus for better weapon control
- New Goldeneye.
- New Goldeneye.
- New Goldeneye
- New Golden Sun
- Wii Party(Mario party except with Miis), and Wii Sports Mix(Wii Sports except with Mario characters)
There. That is my half-assed highlights for it.
-
Warhammer 40k MMO, which will probably end up sucking about as much as the Warhammer MMO, but hopefully not.
-
I really want one of those new 360's
I was sold as soon as I heard "250 gb HDD, quieter"
too bad I still have a perfectly functional 360, with the ripoff wireless adapter, so I can't really justify it right now. Oh well, it'll break soon enough anyway, I'm sure.
-
3DS StarFox 64 / Ocarina of Time remakes best any news I've seen so far.
Goldeneye could be just as terrible as all the other 'sequels'.
PS3 Portal 2 announcement was surprising, sure, but worthless. Who cares? Anyone that played Portal has a PC to play the second.
-
Who cares? Anyone that played Portal has a PC to play the second.
Untrue.
-
you know what would be great, if they let you trade in your old 360 which cost at least 300 dollars to buy anyway, for a new one. If it works as well as they say it does, they might actually save money on repairs.
-
New Goldeneye was just about the least exciting thing about the Nintendo conference.
OK, here's my more composed highlights:
Led off with Zelda: Skyward Sword. Art style is lightly cel-shaded, looks like a hybrid of Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. The combat will actually require finesse rather than just random waggling. For example, you have to cut Deku Babas along their mouths to damage them, and swing around the guards of Moblins or they'll block your attacks. There were some tech glitches during the demo, Miyamoto claimed it was wireless interference but you know Nintendo won't release it until it's perfect so I'm not worried either way. It isn't this year, unfortunately, their tentative date was 'spring 2011'.
Warren Spector came out on stage to demo Epic Mickey, which was kinda crazy. It has a really nice art style for cutscenes, and Spector claimed that the game would react dynamically to whether you used the paintbrush to help the denizens or just kill everyone in your way. It has sidescrolling levels that work as transitions between hubs and are themed after Mickey cartoons. The one they showed in the press conference was Steamboat Willy, and it looked really good.
Showed Dragon Quest 9, but that game's been out in Japan forever and is almost out here so there wasn't much to say.
Showed Golden Sun: Dark Dawn gameplay, it's set many years after the first two games and the characters are descendants of the people from the originals. Some summons were shown, it looks really good.
Wii Party is Mario Party with Miis. It looks like a Mario Party game and will sell millions upon millions of copies, that's pretty much all you need to know.
Mario Sports Mix is basketball, volleyball, hockey, and dodgeball in one package. The Mario sports games are usually good for some ridiculous arcade fun, so that's cool.
Kirby's Epic Yarn is being made by Sakurai and it looks incredible. It's not fully 3D like the other (presumably cancelled) Kirby Wii game, but it has a really charming art style and at one point Kirby is in a giant robot that looks like himself. It's apparently co-op too, although that wasn't in the trailer at all.
Another Metroid: Other M trailer. Reconfirmed the new August 31st release date, aside from that no new info.
Goldeneye Wii, as mentioned. It's being made by Activision, not Rare, and is a 'reimagining' of the original game. Again, probably the least exciting thing for me personally.
Donkey Kong Country Returns is a new 2D platformer from Retro Studios, aka the Metroid Prime dudes. Also co-op with one player for both Donkey and Diddy. This has a nice graphical style too, it's a nice blending of the old prerendered DKC stuff and the style they gave him in Brawl. At one point they were silhouetted in the background but you could still see Donkey's tie and Diddy's cap outlined in red, it was a nice effect.
Finally, they announced the 3DS hardware. It's got 3 cameras for capturing 3D images, an analog nub along with D-pad and buttons, and 1 (not 2) touch screens. The 3D effects are actually on a slider, and can be adjusted on a gradient from full to completely turned off. They only announced showed one game for it at the conference itself, but it was a big one: Kid Icarus Uprising, also being made by Sakurai. It looks like a Wii game: those pre-show rumors were not exaggerating about the 3DS's hardware, I was supremely impressed. The game itself actually looks more like a Sin and Punishment reskin than the original Kid Icarus games, but Sin and Punishment rules so I don't mind in the slightest.
Nintendo's E3 site has a bunch more games announced for 3DS, and the lineup is impressive to say the least. Up-rezzed remakes of Star Fox 64 and Ocarina of Time, as mentioned, but also new Paper Mario, Mario vs. Donkey Kong, Pilotwings, Animal Crossing, and Mario Kart games. From third parties, a port of MGS3 with added 3D effects, a new Professor Layton (hopefully we'll get the 3rd DS game first), Dead or Alive, a brand-new Resident Evil, Saints' Row (what), and a whole bunch of other stuff. Nintendo is really bringing out the big guns with the 3DS, I'm really surprised.
That's about all the Nintendo stuff I can remember but it was a LOT. I was really blown away, I was honestly expecting them to show Zelda and maybe one or two other worthwhile things.
-
Also, Jordan's going to make fun of me but fuck it. From the 3DS launch list:
ATLUS
Etrian Odyssey
Shin Megami Tensei
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor
HAUHGLABHLAGHBLUGHBLGUHBALGHBALGHBAGUBHL
In other news, Sony's press conference was severely underwhelming by comparison. It wasn't as flat-out embarrassing as Microsoft's, it was just boring. For real games, they showed Killzone 3, LittleBigPlanet 2, Gran Turismo 5 (which has a real release date now, honest guys), and finally announced the new Twisted Metal. They showed a pretty sweet looking trailer for Infamous 2, but no gameplay. For Playstation Move stuff, they showed a bunch of the tech-demoey stuff that has already been seen, but also a mashup game with all of their platforming franchises (Sly Cooper, Jak and Daxter, Rachet and Clank) developed by somebody other than the people who actually... created those games. Also, a Harry Potter knockoff game that looks decent but uninspired and has some of the worst fire effects I've seen in a game in years. They gave the PSP a token montage of games, Patapon 3 was in there for all of about 10 seconds and Parasite Eve 3 actually looks pretty cool. No PSP2 announcement, which is probably a bad sign because the 3DS makes the original PSP even more irrelevant than it already is. They also announced a 'premium' PSN service, with exclusive downloadable games/DLC for retail games and early access to demos. 3 dollars a month, so it's basically identical to Xbox Live Gold only slightly cheaper and without all of the really good Live online infrastructure. So... good on them for that I guess. Finally they announced a price for the Move stuff, 50 dollars for the Wii remote equivalent and 20 for the nunchuck thing. Presumably that doesn't include the price of the camera, but it's still competitive with the rumored 150 dollar price tag for Kinect.
-
Oh yeah, and Sony tossed Valve a bunch of money to put Portal 2 on PS3 despite Gaben's hate for the system.
People expecting a 'big surprise' out of Valve are probably pissed right now, though.

Mostly, what I took from Sony's conference is them conceding the handheld market to Nintendo. I'm sure they don't really intend to, but Christ. Their PSP stuff took all of 5 minutes and mostly consisted of announcing a new ad campaign. It's just shameful after Nintendo's show.
Also, yeah, Bryan, I saw those SMT games and I knew you had just jizzed horribly on everything in sight.

I can't help it, Atlus and Nintendo are obviously collaborating on some devious conspiracy to make sure I never have any money ever.

Ahaha, yeah, I made a Blog Thread post about that once. At the time I had "only" 150 hours or so spent on BYTS, but I owned the vanilla for years before getting it plus expansions as part of a 2k games bundle.

I really don't understand the appeal of a lot of Nintendo's stuff. I mean, I have a DS Lite and I played the crap out of a few games but now I have an iPhone to fill that need without having to carry a DS around, so I'm pretty much set.

The games being better is subjective. There are some pretty good games on the iphone at the moment. I didn't have to change my plan to use the iphone, and I don't have kids? I dunno. All I know is that I played the DS fat for a little while, then bought a DS lite and played a bunch of FFTA, Advance Wars and such. Then FFTA2 and the next Advance Wars came out and they were both exactly the same shit as the first game and I lost interest.
Also, games on the iphone cost me less than $5 each. eg: Solomon's Keep cost me $1.20 and I am pretty sure I've played it for over 100 hours. That is a pretty goddamned good ROI.
-
I like quite a few iphone games, but I have a hard time looking at Wind Waker or New Super Mario Brothers and really thinking of it as subjective. Another thing to consider is that the DS beat the iphone to the market by like 3 or 4 years if I remember right. I was playing the game that inspired this (http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2005/6/8/) back in '05. So I have some skepticism about the 3DS, but all told I got my moneys worth out of the original, easy.

Might be a big deal... I haven't used a PS3 in some time, but I do remember that Sony lagged behind Microsoft in multiplayer integration and accessibility for a long time. Steam is like XBL for PCs, essentially. Depending on how expansive Steam integration is, it could be a big deal.

Stuff on Dungeon Siege 3.
...Dungeon Siege III is running off Obsidian’s new Onyx engine, developed specifically for the game but likely to be utilized in future titles. It’s not that Obsidian wasn’t keen of other engines such as Epic Games’ Unreal Engine but they wanted to create an engine all their own that they’d know the ins and outs of...
...It’s a big world you’ll be traversing in Dungeon Siege III. Obsidian has done a good job at providing players a breadcrumb-style navigation system that guides them directly to their destination as simply as possible. They’ve crafted beautiful vistas that can be seen inside and outside of caverns. Additionally, the game’s using a dynamic lighting system that makes it look simply beautiful. I wasn’t the only one. GamingBits.com’s Alexis M, who was in the screening room with me, thought the same thing.
Of course, you’re probably wondering: Dungeon Siege was originally developed by Gas Powered Games, so now that Obsidian’s handling the third, what special touch are they throwing in? Conversations. They’re focused on adding an actual story to the game. Players can choose between answers in conversations that will effect the overall outcome of the game. Obsidian does promise though that there won’t be conversations every five seconds and that they’ll only occur when important. They don’t want to stray players too far from the action RPG that the game really is. To help aid the game’s story in this fashion, the players will walk and talk, interacting and learning the story while fighting and playing...
...Square Enix is publishing Dungeon Siege III when it releases next year. They’ve been in talks with Obsidian about doing a game for at least a “couple of years”. They support the game and give them team ideas all the time, Obsidian’s said. It will launch on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC when it hits. Look forward to it.
..The first thing I noticed when we were ushered into the office room where Obsidian was showing off the game was how good the game looked. From the dynamic lighting effects, to the smooth textures on the enemies, to the truly amazing vista views of distance towns, Dungeon Siege 3 is certainly one of the nicer looking action-RPGs I've seen. The developers from Obsidian that were demoing the game told us that the game runs off a new engine, called the Onyx engine, that they've created explicitly for creating RPGs on the console and PC. Based on the brief bit I saw yesterday, I'm hopeful we'll see it being used more in the future...
..As far as character classes go, Obsidian showed off two of the classes in the game: the Guardian, your typical armored defender/two-handed attacker, and the Archon, which is another melee-based class but also wields some deadly fire spells for additional damage/mob control. The developer joked with us about how every action-RPG/dungeon crawler title always says how they've got "totally unique character classes," but that they actually mean it. From the talents, which weren't described but which we were told "were designed to work with one another," to the textures/animations themselves, Obsidian wanted a player to truly feel as if the class he or she picks is completely different than another one...
Sounds a bit like a cross between Diablo and The Witcher.

So a bit more news about Civilization V is out.
http://e3.gamespot.com/story/6265227/civilization-v-rises-in-september - Goes more into the steamworks features and ingame hub.
http://www.tmrzoo.com/?p=12466 - More talk of gameplay.
Big changes are that Culture is a kind of currency now, basically purchasing your way through a kind of cultural tech tree until you get to "Utopia Project" for the Victory.
Space Race requires you to transport all of the ship parts to your capital in order to win. The parts are vulnerable while making their way there.
City States will be voting in the diplomatic thingies and can favor only one civilization at any given time. Liberating one that has already been annexed will make them quite favored for you and hate the otehr civ, not surprisingly.
Taking over cities gets you 3 options now. Annex, Raze and Puppet Leader. If you install a puppet leader you get resources from the city without having to pay the upkeep for it, but at the cost of not being able to tell it what to do. You can always of course install puppet leaders and take them over later. Not sure if you would be able to purchase them or not afterwards.
Your city now expands one tile at a time and it tends to expand according to the cities needs. You can also purchase extra tiles for a city.
Steam is now the official matchmaking system for the game and there is a in game community hub for uploaded mods and maps. I don't recall if LAN and direct IP games are still viable, but I think they are according to older interviews. Also, no more gamespy yeahhhhhhhh.

That's kinda weird. What if your capital is some giant megalopolis with 20, 25 million people in it? Who would want to blast a rocket off near that many people?

Well, it shouldn't be that huge of an issue unless they really rejiggered the ability to swap caps, which is a distinct possibility considering that gamespot reported the Domination victory currently only requires you to take all the caps as opposed to taking every city in sight.

If we had an area near our capital where we could blast off our first colonization attempt while keeping the city itself out of the blast radius if anything went wrong, I can see it happening pretty easily honestly. Keep in mind that practically everything in Civ is an abstract concept.

I can think with portals just fine, if they can just keep away from the problem that Portal:prelude had, where puzzles was hard because you had to figure out which way you are facing when you exit a portal, because that never made sense to me. Make stuff go from A to B in complicated orders and more elements will be fun if they can do the same thing as they're so good at in all their games - teaching us how to use them first.

I think this article, especially the augmented reality tech demos, really made the game-changing nature of the 3DS sink in to me. (http://kotaku.com/5565266/hands+on-with-four-more-terrific-3ds-games) It's not just a new format for video games, this really changes how we interact with technology across the board. In a world of consumer electronics that are saying 'Me too.' Nintendo is saying 'Me first.' While everyone else is trying their hardest to combine every piece of old technology into one pretty system, Nintendo has already moved ahead of them into the future where they can now only follow. It represents an assault on the present, an assault on how we perceive information, how we perceive our world, how we perceive reality itself. It is, in no uncertain terms, the first real step forward into the future of technology that you can hold in your hands.
And we are fucking using it to play Star Fox.
It's fucking awesome.

It's important to remember that Portal was initially an experimental game, where they made a game spanning a few hours out of a very basic concept to see if it worked. Now we get Portal 2, where they really put their backs into. In a way, it's comparable to World of Goo: First there was only a flash game, Tower of Goo, where you built a tower of interlinking balls. There's your basic concept. In the full game they added a dozen more types of goo balls, plus environmental elements and even completely different worlds, and thereby not replacing but evolving their starting concept. I think that's what's happening here as well.

That is odd, as they specifically said that it wasn't going to be available in the article I read. I am hoping they get it done, because cross-platform multiplayer is something I really want to become a reality.

Cross-platform multiplayer is pretty neat, but I think that considering the teases Valve was giving prior to E3, their primary fanbase is probably pretty let down by that 'surprise'.

I'm actually more interested in the idea that Valve getting Steamworks on PSN means that any updates to their games, they should be able to do for free. I at least highly doubt they didn't force that into the contract before signing. If they did, then MS might have to actually back their statement about not being allowed to charge for DLC that is free on other consoles on Live.

It has nothing to do with E3, but if you want the new Xbox but your still works you can trade it in to Gamestop and, along with $90, you will get one of the new ones.

I picked up the slim today and I just wanted to give a couple impressions on it so far.
The first thing you notice when you take it out of the box is how small it is, and how light. The actual body feels significantly lighter, and the power brick does too. The glossy finish looks like its gonna smudge and gather dust extremely easily, especially since I'm sitting it on its side. The really annoying thing here that I noticed is that is came with just a standard component cable, without the HDMI component option. Apparently this is how a lot of people got their Xbox's, but mine came with one for some reason, so who knows. Anyway this means I'm probably going to end up springing for an expensive HDMI cable, which I'm not going to be able to afford until friday, which is a travesty for my 42 inch flatscreen.
A really cool thing is that when you turn it on, the actual power and disc open places aren't really buttons, they're like touch activated. and they start really easily, extremely sensitive. And the machine really does run incredibly quietly, could only barely hear it when I held my ear up close. Also there was a light touch but when you sync a controller to it you only have to press the controller sync button, the xbox just picks up the signal.
Beyond that its pretty much a 360, so hey, kinda cool. If it turns out to have trouble with red ringing issues I'm probably gonna cry a bit.
-
It can't red ring
it doesn't use red
-
I thought the new one would turn the power icon in the middle of the button red instead of doing rings?
-

The PS3 does have some rather nice things going for it as far as build quality goes. It's just too bad that it took until the last year or so before I could really take it seriously.

it's also too bad that sony actively removes features you've already paid for as they go along.

Try looking on Amazon. I know Best Buy and shit sells them for like $60, but really you can get them online for around $2. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=hdmi&x=0&y=0
And don't worry about getting a "premium" one or any shit like that best it's really no different. Just find one on Amazon for the length you need and you should be set. Shouldn't be more than $4.
-
Monoprice.com also has them really cheap. I believe a friend of mine bought 12 for like 3$ on sale once.

Have you guys/gals seen this review (http://www.digitaltrends.com/gaming/hands-on-microsoft-kinect-a-major-let-down/) of Natal/Kinect?
The Kinect is not easy to use, it’s not accurate, and it’s not fun. The only worse waste of $150 we can imagine spending on the Kinect at this point is the ensuing trickle of dollars that would go into buying the present selection of godawful titles for it.
Sounds pretty great!

well that's a shame. while i was always skeptical about the idea of doing everything via visual recognition, i'll admit i was abit hopeful.
what a majestic beast
indeed. though i would hope that they either enlarge the screens or slim the unit down abit before release, that large bezel is not particularly attractive. i also kind of wonder if the 3d effect will be worth the trouble if you have to keep your head in the exact right spot for the entire time you are playing. they might have been better off using that internal camera for a head tracking style 3d effect. but, i digress, there really is no way to judge until it hits the market and we can see for ourselves.

Funny, this is completely contrary to all the other hands-on impressions I've read. Everybody else seems to think that the motion sensing works well, but it'll be up to developers to think of interesting ways to deliver on the potential in terms of actual gameplay because the controller interface is something we're all inherently used to. Personally, I'm much more interested in Kinect than Playstation Move (although I think both will be total bombs from a commercial perspective) because of the interface and voice recognition features. If the Milo demo accurately demonstrates what that thing can do in terms of voice recognition and the fidelity of the camera, then I think it's got a ton of good ideas behind it. Whether or not they'll deliver on that remains to be seen, and I'm certainly not paying 150 dollars for it up front.
I honestly think both of these peripherals from Sony and Microsoft are too little, too late in terms of actually expanding their audiences in the same way Nintendo did. Say what you want about the Wii (a large portion of it is certainly merited, although I think a lot of people overlook a lot of worthwhile stuff on the console out of sheer obstinacy), but motion control is integral to that device. Who would pick up a 360 or PS3 and then buy an expensive peripheral on top of that? Casual gamers are mostly price driven, and the Wii costs only slightly more than Kinect and is basically equivalent to 2 Move controllers and the Playstation Eye, let alone the costs of the consoles themselves. Do Sony and Microsoft really think they care about getting the same motion-controlled game experiences in high def? Whereas hardcore gamers already have the consoles, but they're used to playing games with controllers and they know that the games they already enjoy won't require the technology, or at least probably won't benefit meaningfully from it. I have no idea who Microsoft and Sony think these peripherals are for, but if they really wanted a direct competitor with the Wii, they needed to bring it out sooner than 4 years after the Wii was released, and they needed to make it more economically competitive up front.
