So, Polaris Music Prize is on again. For those who do not know what is this, it's a Canadian music prize given to any Canadian artist who's put out an album between June 1st 2009 and May 31th 2010. It is "solely" based on artistic merit and not sales, genres or whatever. Past winners include Final Fantasy's He Poos Clouds in 2006 (<3), Patrick Watson's Closer to Paradise in 2007, Caribou's Andorra in 2008. Last year's winners were Fucked Up with The Chemistry of Common Life.
The titles that are in bold are part of the shortlist.

-
that's a good list.
-
Stars barely missed it, so it's going to go to the next whitest band on the list. Here's the shortlist:
BSS
Jason Collett (will be eliminated)
Crystal Castles (an ironic choice given their unapologetic and blatant ripoffin')
The New Pornographers
Owen Pallett
Tegan and Sara
I predict the final winner will be Owen Pallett, though they might shy away from giving him a twofer.
-
booooooooooring
-
-Brasstronaut - Mt. Chimaera
-Broken Social Scene - Forgiveness Rock Record
-Crystal Castles - Crystal Castles (II)
-Holy Fuck - Latin
-The New Pornographers - Together
These are the only ones I've listened to. Of those, I would like Holy Fuck to win. The one I believe has the best shot is probably Brasstronaut. Seeing as I'm not Canuckian and don't really have much of a say in this anyway, I am probably way off.
-
I didn't realise Crystal Castles were Canadian.
The Kharlaris prize for Canadian music rotates between Piledriver, Front Line Assembly, Anvil and The Tear Garden depending on what drugs I am currently under the influence of.
-
The Besnard Lakes are the best on that list.
-
Fuck any list without Breaking Hearts on it.
-
It'll probably be Broken Social Scene or Owen Pallett. Good to see Brasstronaut on the list though, they aren't given enough attention.
-
That's the shortlist? I like every album on that shortlist but fuck that's a terrible shortlist.
-
Negative bro, that's the long list. Shortlist comes in a few weeks.
-
STOP CALLING ME BRO
-
calm down bro
-
Fuck any list without Breaking Hearts on it.
didn't get released within the timeframe but sweet of you to say
-
My money's on Pallett (this is not an endorsement of Owen Pallett's music)
-
STOP CALLING ME BRO
alright dawg
-
STOP CALLING ME BRO
You're the boss, hoss.
-
i don't even know what that is :[
-
wait no that rah rah record was released before june 1! so was library voice. ah well they didn't nominate portico last year.
-
Fuck any list without Breaking Hearts on it.
didn't get released within the timeframe but sweet of you to say
It's a pretty dang good album, considering it came from
Regina.
-
That Shad album is pretty much the best thing I've heard in a long time.
He talks about rapping about naps! And Sergei Fedorov! Actually he did not specify the Fedorov, so maybe it was Fedor Fedorov.

I don't know or care all I know is Shad is a motherfucking pimp
And I am in agreement with people's love for that Besnard Lakes album, I wish "Albatross" were a stuffed animal so I could cuddle with it all day
-
Yeah, the Shad album's definitely the best thing on there.
-
frog eyes not on the shortlist? fuck it then.

If Shad does not win this, I will consider the contest rigged.
-
Seeing as the folk choice was given to Dan Mangan rather than The Wooden Sky I conclude that this is a useless contest.
-
In terms of records I actually like... I guess Caribou's the only good choice? I guess Shad's pretty good too.
But it's either going to be BSS, T+S or Final Fantasy.
-
I sure hope it's not gonna be BSS or T+S. I didn't really like Forgiveness Rock Record and I don't really care about T+S. Owen Pallett would be nice because I love that record, but it would be kind of shitty for others if he won again. I would love it if Radio Radio won. It's one of the most interesting hip-hop records I've heard.
-
It's gonna be Owen Pallet, I'd think/ Or that's my instinct anyway.
-
Seriously, that boring Broken Social Scene-by-numbers album made the shortlist?
Canada, have you lost your mojo?
-
The "But it's Broken Social Scene!" thought sure went through a lot of those jurors minds. The more I think about it, the more disappointed I am with that choice.
-
If it's not Karkwa or Shad I will be disappointed
-
tegan and sara made the shortlist? i liked that album but it was by no means extraordinary
-
Radio Radio just feels really gimmicky.
-
Bullshit to that, man. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6uBmAx00DGE)
-
do any of you fucks even listen to the sadies
-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z70NNjYIuts
-
you scrubs
-
Bullshit to that, man. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6uBmAx00DGE)
Karkwa is bettterrrrrr
-
Well, Zombiedude, you will be happy to hear that the winner of the 2010 Polaris Music Prize is....
Les Chemins de Verre by Karkwa
(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_golToxABcDU/TFcrIdnDi4I/AAAAAAAAADk/TuvFjoV4rZc/s1600/karkwa-les-chemins-de-verre-420x420.jpg)
-
Yesssssssssssss
-
If Shad does not win this, I will consider the contest rigged.
-
Agree with the latter statement. And that Tegan & Sara record sucked balls.
-
you suck balls
-
It didn't suck, but it certainly didn't belong on the shortlist.
-
tegan and sara made the shortlist? i liked that album but it was by no means extraordinary
-
It would have been hard for them to top The Con, no matter what they put out, but I honestly did not enjoy any of the songs on that album. And this is coming for someone who enjoys their other material.
-
I like Sainthood much more than The Con. I like So Jealous more than The Con too though, so maybe I'm broken.
-
So Jealous is great. "I Bet It Stung" might be my favourite Tegan & Sara song.
