Title: PERILS OF SUMMER STEAM SALE
Post by: Tom on 27 Jun 2010, 16:10
So this has been going for like half a week already and it's massive.
What have you guys bought, or intended to do, so far? I just got Civ IV and the Witcher today.

I bought L4D2 and Stalker COP. I missed the one-day 66% sale on L4D2, though. Didn't realize the sales varied day by day until too late.

I wish I could justify spending more, I would definitely grab Killing Floor and Jagged Alliance 2. I'm sure they will be on sale again eventually, though.

Yeah, I bought L4D2 as well. I'm guessing quite a few people grabbed that game recently.

Yeah, for about half an hour the steam servers were overloaded enough I couldn't start the downloads. I've got them both downloading now, though. Good thing I don't have much homework this semester.

I completed my Civ 4 collection, my roommate nabbed L4D2 and Supreme Commander 2, super excited for tomorrow.

Steam deals are the best the best the best.

I'm pretty broke right now, so I only had $5 that I could justify spending: Sacred Gold, Commandos II.

GTA4 is $5, Street Fighter 4 is $10, TF2 is $7 though I can't imagine there's anyone who doesn't own it by now, and all of XCOM ever is $4.

Good day.

You might be getting some problems from not having enough resources, Tom. To play that game with full settings requires an insane computer, the Xbox and PS3 versions of the game have a lot of stuff turned way down. But a lot of people are used to being able to run almost anything with close to full options, and don't realize how much power the game would take up if you had everything on full. Or how terribly optimized the game is, depending on how charitable you want to be.

Game runs fine so long as you turn draw distance down, that's the real resource killer.
And as for me I've bought liberty city stories and global agenda.

I got it running on default settings and it works fine.

Yeah, GTAIV is unusually processor bound. I always buy just enough processor to keep my GPU from bogging down with most titles, so my PC runs like ass with GTAIV despite being more than adequate for most mainstream titles.

Post by: McTaggart on 30 Jun 2010, 00:43
Unfortunately draw distance is the thing you most want at maximum.
Title: Re: PERILS OF SUMMER STEAM SALE
Post by: Nodaisho on 30 Jun 2010, 01:19
Eh, it is nice, but if you look at the 360/PS3 versions, they actually have a pretty short draw distance if you look at where that puts you on PC settings. And besides, GTA doesn't really have any missions where you are getting shot from a mile away, so you never need extremely long draw distances.

gta4 blows so who cares how the draw distance and framerate on the pc port are

Pretty much this. I only have it 'cuz it was a gift. I think I'm on record as not being a GTA guy.

Well, we obviously have different things we look for in games. After all, you play WoW obsessively, I like shooting things in the face.

Actually, I only play 6 hours a week. By raiding standards I'm a casual.

Also, I guess I just feel like GTA games have the least satisfying combat in the history of ever.

Wait. Alpha Protocol was also pretty bad in that area.

They sure put in a lot of effort into the melee fighting for something that becomes completely useless half an hour in.

You should all buy the Star Wars: Empire at War Gold Pack for £3.74 so you can play the mod I run when it's released.

In Alpha Protocol? Out of all the fights, there's only one that can't be effectively handled by melee.

Eh, my problem had more to do with the fact that I have a knack for quickly identifying ridiculously powerful builds, a fairly predictable side effect of playing too much WoW and too many RPGs in general. Basically, I saw Brilliance and said "Welp that's overpowered," and went for that and Pistols with a dip into Stealth for Shadow Operative. After that the game was basically just an orgy of cooldowns and virtual auto-kills. I suppose it's my own damn fault though, in a way.

oh jeez money.

Picked up Trine, Bioshock 2, The Witcher, L4D2, ME2, and Borderlands. The witcher is the only slight disappointment so far, and Borderlands is even better than I  had expected it was.

I'm not sure if it's actually part of the sale or its own thing, but I picked up Counter-Strike: Source for like 4 bucks the first day I was home from school. Problem is my parents' internet connection sucks so I gotta wait till I go back next month to actually download it.

I haven't played any of the Borderlands DLC, but from what I've heard online: Zombie Island and Secret Armory yes, Underdome Riot no.

In GTA 4
The disarm move becomes useless after you use it once, and melee everything becomes useless as soon as you get the pistol. And yet there are three kinds of melee attack and a dodge.

I'm unsure of why they bothered to include it at all honestly, especially after being so proud of it and talking so much about it.

Well, you can use it to beat up normal people and take their money, right?

I just bought Thief: Deadly Shadows. It's a load of fun for 3€
