Title: How to bring back old characters.
Post by: sterlingdragon on 11 Jul 2010, 18:30
Here's an idea:
Marten and Dora have a fight over something, and Marten storms out. From miles away, the Vespavenger hears the fight through a tap she retained on their apartment. She Vespas to them, and starts kicking Marten's ass. Penelope looks up, in her apartment.
She rummages through her closet, and we see some fight and dialog between the Vespavenger, Dora and Marten, regarding her return.
Then...Pizza Girl shows up! She joins the battle alongside Marten and Dora, but then comes another blonde superhero, with an uncanny resemblance to Penelope. They discuss this during the fight.
They kick the shit out of the Vespavenger, and the cops take her away. Then Marten and Dora grab the two blonde superheroines, and they unmask them.
The new one is Penelope, and explains that she got tired of all the girls at CoD calling her Pizza Girl, so she created a new Superheroine secret identity. Meanwhile, Pizza Girl gets away, blocking her face. Marten claims the glimpse he got made her look like someone familiar.

The next Day, at CoD, Marty, Spookypants and Penny tell the story to Faye. Then, somebody walks in. Dora and Faye stare first, then Marten, and Penny is all 'What're you guys looking at?'
Dora's all like, to Faye 'You have to go talk to her'. 'Fine,' Faye says, 'I'll bring her her order.' Faye walks over to 'her' with her latte, and the big revel is next comic.
It's totally fuckin' Sara.

Sara was eaten by an Allosaurus...

She's not coming back.

Totally not related to anything, but Firefox spellchecker, you suck. Suggesting brontosaurus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/apatosaurus) (which isn't even a real dinosaur) when I correctly spell Allosaurus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allosaurus) means You fail paleontology forever! Sara came back to the comic years ago.

The allosaurus deposited her in the potted plants.

Hey, thunder lizards are way better than apathetic lizards! Also, you mean this (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SomewhereAPalaeontologistIsCrying).

Jeph seems to draw the opposite of what people ask him.  So we should all ask that he not bring these characters back and have a whole week of Tai cartoons.

Allosaurus is a real dinosaur.  Brontosaurus isn't, not anymore.  He's called Apatosaurus now.

He's called Apatosaurus now.

Or just "Patty" for short.

That was my point, it was lame-ass Firefox spellchecker that got it wrong.

Sara comes back on Hanner's first day, subs for Dora as she is taking Melville to the vet, and lets out that she went to a college out of state and only just returned...

Raven comes in just to get coffee and does a jaw drop as she sees Sara behind the counter.

Faye tries to get Sara and Dora to surprise Martin in a prompto three way, which turns into a drunken scrabble game between the four of them....

You want old characters back?

Here's how: Make them interesting (to Jeph) again.

After that, everything takes care of itself.

Specifically, more interesting than the new characters. Jeph already has so many current characters that they have to take turns being in the strip. To get Raven back, we'd have to give up Marigold or someone else.

Actually, knowing Raven, probably shortly before...

While I admit that her disappearance from the strip was rather abrupt, and always made me wonder why it was handled the way it was, I have never once had the desire to have Sara return.

*ahem* Yes it is. It is an alternate name for the apatosaurus. It refers to the apatosaurus, not to a made-up other dinosaur.

And english common names don't always have to be identical to the scientific genus name - or do you have a pet felis or a pet canis? They are for many dinosaurs, but they don't have to be.

Allosaurus is a real dinosaur.  Brontosaurus isn't, not anymore.  He's called Apatosaurus now.

Closer, but still missing the point that changing something's name doesn't make it stop existing.

Neither does changing something's title or status.

Right, Pluto?

You're oversimplifying things, a bit, Random. Brontosaurus isn't just an alternate name for apatosaurus. It kind of does refer to a made-up other dinosaur. Apatosaurus was discovered first, then "brontosaurus" came along, "discovered" by the same guy who discovered apatosaurus. What he actually did was find an apatosaurus body and a camarasaurus skull (several miles apart), put them together, and declared it a new, distinct creature--Brontosaurus. He was in a 'race' with his rival to discover more dinosaurs, and scientific rigor was perhaps not followed as closely as it should have been. By the time the mistake was realized and scientifically confirmed, the general public already had the idea that Brontosaurus is the name of a real dinosaur, and you know how hard it is to get those assholes to listen to reason. It's true that, today, brontosaurus is generally assumed to refer to apatosaurus, but there's a little more than a simple name change going on here. Strictly speaking, brontosaurus didn't 'stop existing', it never existed in the first place.

Neither did the planet Vulcan (the real one - sorry, Trekkies), but it didn't stop a bunch of people from sighting it (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vulcan_(hypothetical_planet))!

Yeah, but every time I go back and see her, I'd love to see how Jeph would draw her today.  It would be SO different from that football head and all...

What would Sara look like today?

Probably not.  He's only redrawing a few select old strips, and Sarah never made it into "modern" art.

(now that I've said it...)
