I've heard intriguing things about Emmish, who are apparently a celtic folk/punk rock band. I'll be seeing them tonight, and they're any good I'll grab an album or two and put it up in wink wink.

Any good synth folk bands out there?

Folktronica is a big new scene springing up out of London, UK. Try James Yuill to start with.

Smack That Isaiah? Best. Username. Ever.

Does this have any relevance to Smackin' Isaiah, now A Wilhelm Scream, or is just a coincidence?

I second Alex and The Imaginary Friends.

Yeah, A Wilhelm Scream is my favorite band (you can note the lyric under my avatar image), and my username is a reference to their previous incarnation.

I DID THIS!  Video here, for proof (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ibNmRo-nAQ). Only, this proves that I did it once (in Toronto, at the Dakota Tavern). I also played harmonica for him when he opened for Flogging Molly in Rochester. Several other forumites bore witness to my awesome harmonica skillz. It's only impressive if you've done it twice.

Secretly I'm just mad that you beat me to it

That being said, I have nothing of substance to add to this thread.

What does this even mean.

I take it that for you folk is a handy one-syllable way of saying 'acoustic guitars and someone who can't sing'?

Half the stuff in here is like beardy Americana that I wouldn't necessarily think you'd associate with folk music except tangentially, in the same way you might associate rock and blues.

My bad, man. I apologize for assuming that meant American folk influenced stuff.
I know very well "folk" means from all different cultures, not just American roots stuff, Im just an American so I'm kinda in that mindset, ya feel?
I grew up on Sevdalinka and Gypsy singers, but I just think of that as, well, that.

Folk is a method of transmission and a mode of composition more than anything else. I wouldn't really call a band 'folk punk' unless they were using trad tunes and words, doing old wobbly songs or something maybe, or at the very least engaging with, commenting on and building on the folk tradition. Not just they wanted to play punk but couldn't afford amplifiers.

Not just they wanted to play punk but couldn't afford amplifiers.

Ironically, from most of the folk punk I have heard classified as such, I would describe it exactly as this (not that I necessarily think that is a bad thing)

I like some English stuff, like The Levellers and The Men They Couldn't Hang, and there's a lot of good Celtic Punk, like Flogging Molly, The Tossers and The Real McKenzies (little of it, oddly enough, from anywhere near the Celtic Nations). I haven't listened to much in the way of American non-Celtic Folk Punk, but I've gotten hold of a couple of Against Me! albums, and, if they're any indication, I probably should.

Even if you're using "folk" to mean "ethnic traditional music", I'd say it was more about musical style, than about direct use of traditional sources. A lot of Traditional-style folk songs are relatively recent themselves, such as the famous "The Fields of Athenry", which was only written in the 1970s.

Omg.  I thought I might've been the only person who knew about how good Rosa were.  I got their album a few years ago and whenever I listen to it, I want to jump on a passing freight train that'll take me who knows where so I can become a vagabond and live a life of daring danger.  The swoons, I have them.

Uh, be careful there. Most people say Against Me! got really shitty after they signed with Fat.

I say their album on Fat was pretty alright, but then they got really shitty.

New Wave is hilarious to me in a bad way, and White Crosses is just boring.
Title: Re: Folk Punk
Post by: valley_parade on 18 Oct 2010, 14:49
I like the guitar on "Piss & Vinegar", but that's it for New Wave. And "Stop" is decently catchy.

That said, I guess it's a bookshelf effect. Vivida Vis and Crime as Forgiven By were pretty meh on me, too.

Getting back on my original reply to Traitorfish...dude, listen to The Riot Before. They were already mentioned early in the thread, but need another mention.

Post by: leftandleaving on 18 Oct 2010, 15:29
I liked to believe that New Wave was a joke album.  Then White Crosses came out and I had nothing left to hold onto.

Also, fuck people, AM!'s best albums were on Fat.  Searching For A Former Clarity shows some real maturity and growth from their older stuff.  Then they threw it all away.  Sigh.

I won't lie; last time I went to see AM! I sang along to "Stop" but it's still a really dumb song.

Searching For a Former Clarity is a beast of an album.
Title: Re: Folk Punk
Post by: David_Dovey on 21 Oct 2010, 22:58
Searching For a Former Clarity is probably my favourite AM! album, I honestly think a lot of people were basically looking for an excuse to accuse them of selling out, and nothing they did was gonna change their minds.

I like New Wave for that matter too, and consider it a good record let down by it's production (Butch Vig is a cunt, a serious cunt of a man.) and what seems like Gabel's need to pre-emptively react to the critics in his lyrics.

i'll get shit for this, but i think white crosses is against me's finest work.  but then again, i prefer the later replacements stuff to the earlier stuff, and it's clear tom and co look up to the 'mats in a big way.
Title: Re: Folk Punk
Post by: imapiratearg on 01 Nov 2010, 22:11
Tom can still write a strong song, but with each album his pop sensibilities just seem to grow even more refined, and I think people are repulsed by that.  It's like people think that his music is no good anymore if he's not writing anthems about subverting the current paradigm or whatever.
Title: Re: Folk Punk
Post by: leftandleaving on 02 Nov 2010, 01:57
Great minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, small minds discuss people.

All of Gabel's most recent songs are about events or people, never about his ideas or his feelings or interpretations, just his reactions to things happening around him.  I miss him being actually angry about things and willing to stand up and tell you "let someone take our place, let them be your entertainment."  I know that he said it, then he did it, but I wish he would at least continue writing more... honest songs.  Since the end of Searching, no song has been even half as heartfelt as anything from earlier albums.  It's all so boring.  Also, without the smart lyrics, all I can focus on is how bad his annunciation is of words.  SUFFOCASHUN <doodledoo>.
