Title: Final Fantasy XIV
Post by: Ozymandias on 11 Oct 2010, 09:04
So....I'm installing this. But only a 30-day trial because I'm not that stupid. Anyone have it?

Nah. I'm curious though, since it sounds like they tried to make it a bit more solo friendly than the original. The first one was an absolutely brutal time sink, and the emphasis on group play hit meant I rarely had any reason to ever just log on for 20 or 30 minutes. Wasn't much point in it between travel times and needing a group to get anything worthwhile done.

Okay, this game is fucking insane. I have a miner. At rank 7, not that far in, you can upgrade from the starting pickaxe to a bronze pickaxe.

This requires (to craft from scratch) the following materials:

3x copper ore
1x tin ore
1x maple log
4x flax
2x moko grass
1x sheepskin
1x willow log
1x bone chip
1x muddy water
14x earth shard
27x wind shard
17x fire shard
2x ice shard
10x lightning shard
2x water shard
1x fire crystal

and I need to know Carpentry, Blacksmithing, Alchemy, Fishing, Leatherworking, Mining, Botany, and some combat job to obtain/synthesize them.

It is, without a doubt, the most brutal crafting ever. It is not possibly to buy this thing from any vendors, only players. All materials, of course, are purchasable form players if you have the gil and can actually find someone with them. This is not easy.

That's exactly the kinda shit I'm talking about from the original FF online. In WoW, I had the highest gear score on my server of anyone without Shadowmourne for quite a while-- and the only reason I didn't have Shadowmourne is because I played a class that couldn't use it. So when I say the game isn't casual enough, that's REALLY saying something. The only thing that took longer than playing Final Fantasy Online was installing it.
