If you don't know who Coil are, you suck. Here is a fairly random selection of songs by Coil, if you still do not like them you suck more.
Disco Hospital (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zzqsVbFs5fc)
The First Five Minutes After Violent Death+The Golden Section (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJTYIa1X06U)
Love's Secret Domain (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZhpIDs_VQ4&feature=related)
The Anal Staircase (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dkz9nf1shb0)
Windowpane (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xTMHriyjJxQ)
Teenage Lightning (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLXBIH-VSTo)
Red Birds Will Fly Out of the East and Destroy Paris in a Night (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKhI3MyUVw0)
The Original Wild Garlic Memory (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFfXfOXX498)
Sex with Sun Ra (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKIptf-eVcg)
Fire of the Mind (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjhGXjSK4Ik)
Ok so. Horse Rotorvator or Love's Secret Domain?

That's a tough call, but I generally like Coil's flirtations with acid house so I'm going with Love's Secret Domain.
I honestly don't listen much to Coil's early discography as much as I probably should. I always gravitate towards quieter, late-period stuff. I don't think Peter Christopherson really hit his stride as a producer until the Solstice / Equinox EPs.
For anyone curious I'd say the best place to start is the (unofficial?) career retrospective A Golden Hair With a Voice of Silver (http://popstalinist.blogspot.com/search/label/Coil?updated-max=2010-01-05T16%3A50%3A00-07%3A00&max-results=20), which nicely demarcates late- and early-period Coil. I put up all the Coil that I enjoy (plus a Thighpaulsandra solo album and Sleazy's solo work as Threshold Houseboys Choir) up on my old blog (http://popstalinist.blogspot.com/search/label/Coil).

It was an official (though limited run, in the original form of the split album anyway) compilation, designed to commemorate Coil's first live performance in Russia. As is the way with Russia, it was bootlegged beyond belief.
Talking of related projects, what about the Coil side-projects. I really like Black Light District, but I have never really got in to ElpH so much: I can see why the decision was made not to put that material out under the Coil banner.
-
When I torrented the (more or less) entire Coil discography there wasn't a lot of division between the primary and secondary acts, so I'm not as familiar with side projects, aside from various collaborations with pre-existing artists (Nurse With Wound, Current 93, etc). I like Queens of the Circulating Library and Constant Shallowness Leads to Evil, and the former is essentially a side-project as it's the only Coil release not to include input from Sleazy.

LSD.
Horse Rotorvator is impressive as hell, but windowpane is a pantheon "Let's get really high and just drive around the midwest for hours at a time with this thing looped" song. It's almost kinda funky, which gives it a bit of a visceral quality without being as outright creepy as the stuff on Horse Rotorvator.

While I dearly love the solar music (I'm currently listening to Love's Secret Domain quite a lot - Chaostrophy is fantastic!) I have a closer affinity with their moon music. Musick to Play in the Dark is phenomenal.
My girlfriend is very lucky to have seen them live twice before John passed away and I'll always be upset I never got to see them. Coil live is such a different beast but hopefully one day I'll be able to afford this (http://thresholdhouse.greedbag.com/release/~colour-sound-oblivion-box-set-pr/).
Also, I think you missed possibly their most moving song in that list:
Going Up (http://youtu.be/uTHgDp3_1cw)

I probably listen to Music to Play in the Dark vol. 1 as background music more often than anything else they've done. I like my music a touch icy and sleek (probably why I took to ital tek so quickly once KvP's last mix introduced me to it-- predictable, since Red Birds is a huge favorite of mine) but I have a short attention span, so that album represents almost precisely how slow building music can be before it starts to lose me.

My favourite Coil fact (quote from Wikipedia):
"A music video for the song "Love's Secret Domain" was also shot and is currently unreleased and unaired due to its nature: as Christopherson explained, "We shot 'Love's Secret Domain' in a go-go boy bar in Bangkok; with John [Balance] performing on stage with about 20 or 30 dancing boys, which probably won't get played on MTV, in fact!""
Coil actually made a music video so homoerotic that they thought it would be a bad idea to release it.
I will explain to those less familiar with Coil that Coil is possibly one of the most fantastically queer musical acts ever to have graced the earth with their presence.
-
They were tight with with Derek Jarman (made some fantastic soundtracks for him) and claimed that their photo of a pierced / tattooed penis inspired Hellraiser, which is probably true. William S. Burroughs once tried to cruise Peter but was turned down. Peter now lives and makes music in Thailand as the Threshold Houseboys Choir, and often appears in photos with teenage boys. They don't call him Sleazy for nothing.

I never really knew for sure since I know fuck all about the musical groups I listen to, but I kinda assumed they were gay because it's industrial music and sometimes thighpaulsandra is involved. Such criteria has yet to steer me wrong.

I have to be in a certain mood to enjoy Coil's music. Usually, even the so-called solar music, I find myself only listening to late at night.
my favourite song by them is Things Happen (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3FdhAAO6x0&feature=related)
also I wish all their albums didn't cost like 60 dollars now.

Sorry to resuscitate but this is a fabulous live video of Going Up:

I once downloaded the entire Coil discography, because of Mr. Khar. The catalogue was so mind-bogglingly huge that the selections I listened two quickly drowned in the huge morass that is Coil/side project's output.
Therefore, I turn to you, the Coil experts to lead me in the right directions. Regardless of mine own musical tastes, from what I know of Coil, these will be largely irrelevant.
So I want your advice on Coil, and why you prefer that Coil to a different one.

If you want to do it via albums, I would suggest Love's Secret Domain and Musick to Play in the Dark vols. 1 & 2, in that order, or the opposite order if you like peaceful things.
-
Pretty sure it was a part of either the Black Gold or Backwards demos. I don't think it was a collaboration, though I do have a Bill Laswell track that's a variation on the song.

Coil was my favorite band of all time. I keep my set of Ape of Naples vinyl away from everything else on my mantlepiece because it is something approaching a sacred object to me.
Everything he did, from TG all the way up to Threshold Houseboys Choir, was brilliant, and his music was changing and evolving all the time, for the better in my opinion. I was so looking forward to more decades of beautiful music from Sleazy but he has been taken from us too soon. I haven't been this devastated over the death of an artist since Jhonn.
I was meaning to send him an email -- he apparently would respond in full to every fan email he receieved - but somehow I slept on that and now I'm obviously kicking myself pretty hard.
