The other day I sat down in front of my T.V. at 6pm to turn on channel 10 and play my nightly game of Simpsons repeat roulette, and it was a good day because the episode they were repeating was the one where Homer gets elected as Springfield's sanitation commissioner. It's one of my favourite Simpsons episodes: just flat-out hilarious from start to finish. It also features cameos from every member of U2 as themselves, and their scenes are some of the episode's funniest. Now I know they didn't write any of the episode, but I found myself thinking "These guys, they're okay."

whaaaat bull
you just don't have enough interest to find the good tracks yourself, I bet

i'll save you some time:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NI2b7qXUlnE&feature=related (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NI2b7qXUlnE&feature=related)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LobSS8oSXVU (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LobSS8oSXVU) <- this is probably my favorite
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eskb898zyEc (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eskb898zyEc)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FcE2nGE2fIk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FcE2nGE2fIk) I love this song for its crazy textural quality, the fact that you can dance to it is just crema

Anyway, I've seen Rusko and deadmau5 both over the course of this year and for my part I don't think deadmau5 rock's the fucking room anywhere on Rusko's level. Also, Rusko seems to attract a less douchey crowd, but that's a pretty localized observation and it may just be because deadmau5 is more popular.
Title: Re: Goodbye U2
Post by: Alex C on 03 Nov 2010, 16:19
Rusko's highs are up there with anyone's but when he's shit he is total shit.
Title: Re: Goodbye U2
Post by: De_El on 03 Nov 2010, 16:39
That's probably true. I dunno, I guess my main defense is that Rusko's made more tracks than deadmau5 that I care about and will listen to repeatedly, and I had more fun at his show.

Totally defensible. Besides, we're talking about a DJ. For all I know he's polished some of the stuff I dislike into gems by now.
Title: Re: Goodbye U2
Post by: KvP on 03 Nov 2010, 18:32
Actually I run into all sorts of people who think DeadMau5 is dubstep, which makes sense as the average person 'round here thinks this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_jhnxgJOrnM) counts. Or this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WtMlB-BEMso), for that matter. DeadMau5 is relatively lifeless Tech House but he seems to tour with brostep-y sorts. He's more interesting than Rusko usually is, but that's a low bar to clear. He's not producing bad MIA tracks, either.

When dubstep actually existed it was more like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWPE_XvzrTs). These days it's actually more House than Garage. You don't hear many claps on the 3s or snares on the 2s and 4s from the underground.

Only funny 'cause it's true (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOhWSGbhxAo&feature=related).

Thank god I'm not the only one who feels this way.
Title: Re: Goodbye U2
Post by: Alex C on 03 Nov 2010, 19:01
I don't like dubstep for the most part either, but every once in a while a track catches me off guard and I'll like it. Rusko was surprisingly entertaining when I saw him in Chicago but if I had to choose a dog in this fight I'd go with deadmau5. I just have a soft spot for house oriented music.

Anyway, you'll never catch me trying to categorize any of these guys definitively anyway. Deadmau5 had "Soma" and "Strobe" on the same damn album anyway so fuck if I know what to call him exactly. At what point do you identify these guys by the beats vs. what kind of effects they tend to favor?

See here (http://forums.questionablecontent.net/index.php/topic,22467.msg962211.html#msg962211). Not a lot has changed in the last two months, except more and more dubstep OGs are making House music (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2uGrooVLjhc).

In a nutshell
 - Are the beats horribly unquantized (ie are they sloppy)? It's Wonky (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ht5VaNI-RfA&feature=related).
 - Is it vaguely afro-caribbean in its percussion? Does it have a 4/4 beat? It's Funky (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDoSFTc4ymI&feature=related).
 - Is it just incessant, phallic bass slamming? It's brostep (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vr21MblV0Bw).
etc.

It's not that you're dumb, so much that people still refer to things as "dubstep" that is dumb. It's about as descriptive as "indie rock", these days.

Rusko and Deadmau5 are both pretty soulless at this point, although they have both had their high points.

Beats Antique makes them both look like plastic wind-up toys, though.

Title: Re: Goodbye U2

Flylo's always been all over the place, but he's essentially a dubstep DJ who was weaned on J Dilla instead of whatever Grime and UK Garage records are considered seminal in South London. He pals around with the Hyperdub folk and he essentially mentors a lot of LA artists whose influences are much more apparent (Teebs / Gaslamp Killer / Tokimonsta / Eskmo etc.) He's also been called "IDM" but that's just what tends to happen when you include jazz influences in your electronic music. He's not a great example of any particular sound, but he's not really that great in general either. Daedalus does the same schtick better and has been at it for longer. He just doesn't have the blood pedigree.

As far as I can tell, people who don't know anything about electronic music mostly just think dubstep is things with wobble bass. Which is sad. But I went to see Vaski and Excision and had a great time so I can't really be talking.

Here's Marc Almond singing fucking death hymns with Current 93 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWn1G-LMvNI). Here's Marc Almond pouring honey over flys in the video for Coil's cover of Tainted Love which is on permanent display in the Museum of Modern Art, New York (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eo3TUtRnZi4).
