Title: The King Is Dead
Post by: the_pied_piper on 02 Nov 2010, 14:45
New album from The Decemberists set to roll out in early 2011 called, you guessed it, The King is Dead.

Confirmation here (http://consequenceofsound.net/2010/10/31/the-decemberists-announce-new-album-the-king-is-dead/).

New track available for download too, seems like they have gone back to their standard sound so everyone should be happy again.

To be fair, The Crane Wife is a pretty decent album, but The Hazards of Love is so atrocious I can't even  :psyduck:

They've still had more hits than misses for me: I love Castaways & Cutouts, Her Majesty, and the Crane Wife (which I think has more than enough highs to compensate for the awful lows of "The Perfect Crime" and "When the War Came"), Picaresque is not bad but not particular exciting and not as coherent as their best albums, while the Hazards of Love is just awful and dull and boring and shitty.

So that's three and a half albums out of five that I really like, which is not bad!

But the only Decemberists album that was less than excellent was Her Majesty.

Dude, what? The album that contains "Los Angeles, I'm Yours", "The Bachelor and the Bride", "Red Right Ankle", and "I Was Meant For the Stage"??

Hazards Of Love could've been improved with the addition of more "songs".

You know what I mean?

A lot of them were the same music with different words?

I dunno. I really dug Hazards of Love.

Castaways is pretty brilliant I think. Definitely their best. It's weird and kinda scary and their troubadour-hip schtick hadn't gotten sorta stale yet.

Well, Her Majesty does have some great songs, like "Shanty for the Arethusa", "The Bachelor and the Bride", "The Chimbley Sweep" and "Red Right Ankle" but I'm not a fan of the other 2 you mentioned and it contains probably the only Decemberists track that I actively dislike, which is "Billy Liar".

I think the only song on Picaresque that I actually ever listen to is the Mariner's Revenge Song, it is still just as awesome as the first time I listened to it

but yeah, Crane Wife ain't too shabby I guess

Well gee whiz, I thought I just thought I was kind of ambivalent towards them because The Hazards of Love was kind of boring, but I guess it's actually because tommy or emilio hates them or something.

Must be.

Dude come on! You are like olderish and pretty smart, I think. You should know that you are allowed to like whatever the fuck you want to like and if any of us punk kids gives you hard time about it, you can kill them. or us. whatever

We all hate on shit that we...hate...but really we're not so stupid as to actually have feelings about what other people listen to. It's their choice.

That said, what the heck is a decemberist? It sounds like it would be sad and boring....but I've never heard their music, so I dunno.

Why the hell didn't anyone tell me that Gillian Welch was singing on this album? I mean gees.

I've only listened to it twice but I really love it so far. I'm so glad that Colin Meloy's decided to go back to writing songs. Plus close country harmonies never did any song any harm ever. Plus it's Gillian Welch, for goodness sake.

Hadn't thought about it like that but you're spot on. Its standout tracks aren't quite up there with a select few previous songs, but it's consistently awesome.

Coming back to this because the more I listen to it the more I love it. I'm a sucker for this style of music anyway so that helps, but it's sounding more and more like a "time out" album to me, like they needed to take a breather after Hazards of Love, which they probably did. Plus, I'm becoming more and more convinced that "January Hymn" and "June Hymn" are two of the loveliest songs Colin Meloy's ever written.

the first one that jumped out me and the one that continues to get me is "rox in the box", owing solely to the way he sings "and if you ever make it to ten, you won't make it again." i just really like lil' moments and that one particularly stirs me. what a bamf, that colin meloy

I could not get "Calamity Song" out of my head for three days straight

(when I did, it was replaced by "Rise to Me," which hung around for a day before vacating its position to "Down by the Water")

I visualize all bands and artists in a huge web.  There are epicenters are genre but the web is a calculation of many metrics finding the most interesting bands on the far tips of the web straddling 2 different genres.  This band feels like it belongs right on the center of the indie web.  That is not bad thing par-say but it does limit my interest in them just because they sound kinda like everyone else.

Animal Collective and Deerhoof, man.

We actually have a QC Anti-Deerhoof Society.

Here's my deal with Deerhoof:

I honestly think they would be my favorite band if they had a different vocalist. Her voice just grates my ears. Totally ruins an otherwise solid band, imo.
