Title: The Illusionist (no, not the crappy looking 2006 film)

From Sylvain Chomet, known for the Triplets of Bellville.

I've been reading about this film for a couple of months now and have seen very little information and interest online, which seems a little shocking.  Maybe I'm not looking in the right places, but as far as I can tell no one knows about this movie!
It just came out in NY and LA, and I'm hoping it will get wider distribution soon, because I have not been this excited for a theatrical release in a very long time.  BE! EXCITED!

It looks really good, and I like the throwback animation style. But don't diss Edward Norton, the Illusionist was a really good movie. Anyway if this hasn't had any sort of media attention I seriously doubt it'll get any sort of wide release, so chances are I'm probably gonna have to wait til' Netflix snags a few copies or something way down the line.

This film is about Edinburgh! I still haven't seen it though. It's supposed to be beautiful.

There is a scene in a cinema called the Cameo, and my plan has been to go see this movie in that cinema. I think it's still showing there.

YEA I'm excited for that as well, I was just there for the first time visiting friends and am excited to see if I remember anything that is included in the film.

I didn't mean to diss anybody, I just am annoyed because everytime I try to tell people about this movie they say, "wait, wasn't the Illusionist a movie that already came out?"  One friend that I was informing of this movie said she and her boyfriend watched the other one a couple years ago and it was responsible for a couple long-term inside jokes in their relationship, so I assumed it was bad (she also said it was bad but either way...).

I never got a chance to watch The Triplets of Bellville, but I have heard nothing but good things.  This looks cool

I think I have fallen in love with his assistant/cleaning lady

It was pretty good. Probably my favorite movie with little to no dialogue.

The one thing I never understand was his relationship with the girl. Did he have a thing for her or was he just being nice? It seems like he was a little heart broken when he say her with that guy.

I finally saw this last night.

When Johnny C noted in the Black Swan thread that every dumbass he knew would rather see "Due Date," I felt a similar thing should be said about this film.  Granted it has been gradually released for a little while now, this was its opening night at the theater I saw it at (which is a large theater), and the audience consisted of myself, my girlfriend Mary, a woman directly in front of us, a man about three rows down, and a dude who watched maybe the first five minutes and then LEFT (really dude? like, did you get confused and thought Martin Lawrence was going to be in this?...).

Another note from the theater experience was whoever put together the opening previews must have just figured, "d'uuhhhmmm, this is an animated movie, so how about an ad for Rango (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_3PSswp2k4) and Rio (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bf6zeRwk5LE&feature=related)," two children's movies (granted Rango looks like something I would say, "huh, that looks ok," and then NEVER see it, Rio just looked like typical garbage).

Anyway, on to the film.  I really appreciated this much more than Triplets of Bellville.  I really liked the animation style utilized in Bellville, but at times the contortions to the character's features was a lot to take in.  Not bad.  Just a lot.  This was toned down very much in the Illusionist.  It is still Chomet's unique animation style and the characters were very recognizable as his own, but it was easier, for me to focus on the story.  Everything presented looked absolutely beautiful and I'm really happy I was able to see this in theaters, and really annoyed that when it comes out and I start forcing my friends to watch it when we hang out, they will undoubtedly say, "wow, this is awesome, when did it come out?"  And I will say, "fucking four months ago I told you all about it but you did not want to go see it with me."

Anyway, this movie was really satisfying to see in a theater (not NECESSARY to the enjoyment, but still very satisfying) and to any QC boardies, I once again stress that this should probably be seen before it;s outta theaters.

To the question posted above (spoilerzz)

I think he was just being nice... ... I started feeling like she was sort of manipulative by making him buy her all this nice stuff because she knew he was nice, so I think maybe he felt betrayed in some way... it's difficult to explain, but I think the idea was he was providing all these nice things for her and she was taking him for granted (we even saw a bit of proof of her assumption that people would just naturally support her when she seemed to ask the guy she started dating to buy her the necklace).   So when he saw the two of them together he felt awkward...
Honestly, it really was hard to tell if he was physically attracted to her or not, but I'm guessing the idea was that he was not.  I'd be interested to see an opinion thinking he was, though, and what would specifically indicate that.

From what I've read it's meant to be a father-daughter relationship.  And that's what I saw immediately.  I didn't see her at all of manipulative, I saw her as innocent, just pointing out the things that she likes.

I'm not really sure which of the two animated films of his I like better.  They're such opposites of each other in terms of tone that I find it hard to compare them.  I loved how whimsical and absurd the Triplets were and I love the melancholy and bittersweet feeling of this one.  The clown listening to the music and drinking what I presume to be scotch?  That's probably going to stick with me for a while.

Yeah, I wouldn't compare them in terms of "which was better,"  and maybe I worded myself poorly in saying "I appreciated this one more," when I should have said, "aesthetically I appreciated this newest work more."
I really did feel like this one was easier to digest because of the slightly toned down animation style, but, yes, both films were wonderful and I wouldn't put one against another like that.

Maybe I was feeling too cynical when I watched it... that is a good viewpoint of the girl.

I saw her as innocent as well, and probably that she didn't really understand money all that well, like when she was on the date and tried to get the necklace for a single coin.

True!

Man, what kind of mood was I in while watching this!  I really disliked her while watching, I will have to see this again.

I don't really remember much about it, but I remember enjoying the 2006 film quite a bit.
