Went to see this last night. Admittedly, I go into Coen movies expecting to see something I like, and I almost always have. I also like westerns, and Bridges, so this seemed like a win/win right off the bat as far as a movie I'd enjoy, and I did. The juxtaposition of the violence and the eloquent prose of the characters struck me throughout the film, and the way the characters converse stole some of the thunder away from the landscapes, which says a lot for the writing and the acting IMO. The downside was that certain parts were very predictable. We know when Cogburn claims to have ridden straight at 7 men with guns blazing that we would see a similar scene later on. We know that LeBeouf will make an excellent shot with his rifle when he laments his earlier miss. Still, if those are the worst complaints, thats great. I especially liked the scene where Maddy is being brought to safety by Rooster after being bitten by a snake. In one part, its obvious that the pair are being filmed in front of a screen portraying the landscape, and this is a small homage to the way in which classic westerns were filmed while accentuating the surreal feeling that Maddy is experiencing, slipping into delirium from the venom.
Any thoughts/comments on the movie?

I came into this with next to no knowledge of the film. Hell, I didn't even know Matt Damon was in it.
I also did not know the film was supposed to be as funny as it was. I was making bear noises when the bear man approached on horseback.
-
It was a lot funnier than I was expecting as well. The dialogue is phenomenal.
-
I haven't read the novel yet (its on backorder at Barnes and Noble until the 4th, so I'll check back then. the local used book stores don't have it either), but I plan to. I suspect the humor will be present in the book, as the film was supposed to be very true to the novel.
Need to see Black Swan now.

It was like that when I read Shane. The book went into much more detail about how he related to the kid's parents (still filtered through the kid's eyes of course). Plus the kid was far more likable in the book than the whiny movie kid. I highly recommend the book.
There's a lot of nuances and issues addressed in the literature of the time that movies then couldn't really show. Even the original True Grit had to take a lot of those expectations of the audience into consideration even though it was made at a time when film was changing.
-
I've never read Shane either, but now that you mention it, I'll grab that one too. Thanks for mentioning it!
-
So something worth seeing then?
-
yep
-
Definitely worth seeing. Jeff Bridges alone makes this worth seeing.
-
You have convinced me to go watch True Grit tomorrow. congratulations
-
Movie is super fucking good.
-
Mattie was the best thing I've seen in a theater all year. Wonderful bit of casting there. Cogburn was good, LeBeouf was good, Chaney was extremely effective. I'd urge pretty much anyone to go see it.
-
The dialogue is phenomenal.
Every character had awesome lines. The only characters without awesome lines were the extras who never talked.
-
The movie earned my love just for 'I don't know that man', let alone Steinfeld's conversations with the pony man.
Also since it's not getting enough mention I am completely shocked that bear doctor hasn't become this year's I drink your milkshake it's so out of place yet perfectly done.
-
I made bear noises when he was approaching, causing my girlfriend and cousin to crack up. Also saying, "Bears can't ride horses!!"
Was anyone else really surprised when it got ultra violet in the cabin? To me it came out of nowhere, and then the rest of the movie was mostly people getting shot, much less violent then the knife fight.

Fun fact: I was named after this movie. It was my dad's uncle's favorite, and he died shortly before I was born.
Other fun fact: I saw True Grit this weekend. Fucking badass.

saw it last night. really excellent.
everything about it was superb. the only thing i could even imagine myself complaining about was the music: it wasn't bad by any stretch of the word, it was great actually. it just seemed a little cliched at times.
however, once i remembered that it's a remake of a john wayne movie, i easily filed the music under "intentional" since....it's a fucking john wayne movie. it's supposed to be like that.
every time i get depressed about the amount of crap that people are producing these days, i think about Coen brothers movies and i'm given a little hope. at least someone is leaving something worthwhile for the future to find, so they don't think we're all total idiots.
-
The wson't find the good stuff - but Uwe Boll's collected works will somehow survive.
-
See, I'm not viewing this as a remake of a John Wayne movie, and I don't think that's how it was intended. It's just a different telling of the story, they aren't trying to re-do John Wayne.
-
Yeah but they kind of are in some ways, there's a lot of necessary similarities in the story telling, like the dynamic between bridges and damon, that are incredibly reminiscent of the Wayne movies. It's not a remake of the movie so much as a remake of the book, sure, but it's still the same story with a lot of the same notes hit. That shouldn't be surprising.

That wasn't that great a post, but it's still better than the OP's 5th grade style paper movie review.
-
I'm wondering, should I see the original now or will I dislike it after seeing this?

dude that was harsh

tell me i'm wrong

I could've written something filled with obscure references to films normal people never watch, but thats just as pretentious on an internet forum as it is in anywhere else. The other option is the "GO SEE THIS YOU FUCKERS" style internet post, but I actually felt like sharing my thoughts on some parts of the film. Either way, fuck you.

True Grit - Spoilers - Spoilers
Read this post the other night. Admittedly, I come to the QC forums expecting to read posts that I dislike, and I almost always do. I also dislike this subforum, and unobtrusive posters, so this seemed like a lose/lose as far as a post I'd enjoy goes, and I didn't. The combination of hackneyed praise and attempts at high level vocabulary left me cold off the bat, and the way the post revealed obvious points stole thunder from the complete lack of value of the opinions, which says a lot about the thread IMO. The upside was that the OP's ignorance of a genre he claimed to love was humorous. We know that anyone who has watched a lot of films like the John Wayne movie this is a pseudo-remake of knows better than to expect a lot of narrative significance, so the OP's complaint about such an obvious thing is hilarious. Still, if laughing at someone's poor boarding is the best you can get, that's pathetic. My favorite part was at the end where SonofZ3 just does the blatant 5th grade review thing of listing his favorite part while attempting to mask his clear lack of knowledge about the genre as whole by making a terrible observation and using words like "surreal" and "delirium."
-
Just fyi, you're being an asshole. Feel free to stop being an asshole.
-
yeah kieffer ease up, dude – lead by example w/r/t posts
-
You forgot the Tarantino reference. Other than that, you really nailed the condescneding rant by a douchebag film "buff" post.
-
Sorry guys I'll be nicer.
This movie was really good, huh.
My friend thinks the ending was kinda overblown but the shot at the very end of her walking away, one armed in the snow seemed pretty awesome to me.
Thoughts?
-
I liked this movie but I saw it with a boy and I spent the whole time being semi-distracted by hand-holding

Yeah, that was awesome. I expected the shot to last until she disappeared over the horizon and I was a little disappointed when it ended before that, until I realized that if they did that the shot would have been, like, several minutes long.
I was gonna talk about another shot that I really liked, but I pretty much loved all of them so....I'm not gonna do that.

:-o PRE-MARITAL HAND-HOLDING? :-o
But yeah, the movie was great, and I'm still pissed that Steinfeld was nominated for supporting rather than lead. It's some OP*-style bullshit. Even if she'd won, it would've rang false.
