Title: this is a thread about weird musical toys
Post by: sean on 05 Jan 2011, 15:10
so guys in this thread post about weird musical instruments/toys that are really neat and whatever.

today i am going to show you the otamatone (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QylHnFvydP4&feature=player_embedded). basically you put yr finger on the neck to select a pitch and you squeeze the mouth to make noises. it looks like the best thing and its only like, 35 bucks (US) on thinkgeek or amazon. a friend of mine by my school has one and i want to play with it sooooo badly.

so guys what weird musical toys do you know about?

This one's real obvious and all but theremins (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qh38CmbGFBM) are hella fun.

I guess it's not that weird but I really like the look of the Korg Monotron. It's pretty much like a stylophone but it has a low-freq. oscillator, a voltage controlled oscillator and a voltage control filter meaning you can get a stupid amount of sounds out of it, and the really cool part about it is that it has an aux in so you can plug in external instruments like another keyboard or a guitar and use it to fuck with the output of those instruments, like so (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jj0zjBvRf0E). It's basically a really cool and surprisingly powerful thing which runs off a few AAA batteries and fits in yr pocket. I'm also pretty enamoured with things like this and the stylotron and a whole range of iPhone apps which are basically made to be as intuitive as possible to non-musicians and encourage improvisation.

The most memorable part of seeing Björk perform at the Big Day Out a few years ago was that she had someone in her band playing a Reactable (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ni_x_74VKU0).

There is the Trimba (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hO5GHdXdDjY) which is basically the platypus of musical instruments.

One of the courses I have the option of doing this semester involves short-circuiting a variety of toys and stuff to make them make awesome music.
