Title: Readin' from CES, I SO want one of these...
Post by: AnAverageWriter on 08 Jan 2011, 21:32
It's like a netbook, except apparently it's way powerful AND multitouch AND the keys morph depending on what program you're using and...

No price or release date.

Why do I always fall in love with these things before they even come to market? This is the MBook all over again.

That does look pretty rad. If they manage to retain the morphing keyboard and decent battery life in the shipped version I'd be somewhat sold on the idea.

Pretty sure this is in the wrong forum?

Why was this moved to "click"?

It was a topic about the entertainment possibilities of the new device. It may be a computer device, but its geared towards movies and entertainment.

Guess it doesn't matter, nobody was posting anything in it really anyway.

It's a new piece of technology; generally we try to keep any technology-related discussion in this forum.  There's a kindle thread buried in here somewhere, even though it's primarily used for reading.  The only exception to that is video games, which is more or less what that thing seems to be for.

Everything about computers goes into CLIKC. This is a computer. And what a computer it is! I was recently thinking about the possibilities of a full-fledged operating system on handheld devices, you know, a smartphone or a tablet on which you aren't bound to whatever app store the developers want to pull money out of. And this is the answer. I could never have imagined a keyboard that switches its looks and function on the go! Depending on its weight and form, you might even be able to play games with your thumbs, like on a Nintendo. If the keyboard could be flipped all the way to the back of the screen, it would basically function like a tablet, and then it pretty much has all the bases covered.

I'd seriously consider spending an amount of money that buys me a desktop computer on this.

The main features of the device are aimed at gaming - hence here.

I like this quote:

Well that went from "cool concept" to HOLY CRAP in about 10 seconds.

Here's Razerzone's page on this: http://cult.razerzone.com/2011/01/06/razer-switchblade%E2%84%A2-a-revolution-in-pc-gaming/ which I was coming over here to post before I saw this thread.  I think that Razer have really hit the right note for this by creating what is in effect a specialised MID that is trageted to a certain enthusiast market and has enough to differentiate itself from everything else in the same space.  The customisable keyboard alone has enough wow factor, due to the hype surrounding the Optimus keyboards a while back.  I didn't even realise it had a touch-screen until I read the CES article as I really only skimmed the Razerzone page, but that's fantastic.

Unfortunately it's a concept device, not a finished product.  They are currently working with "selected partners" to design actual products based on the idea.

So this could end up as ill-fated as the Pippin then?  :-(

From our perspective that would not be such a bad thing.  The Pippin failed because of the abundance of better systems available at the time.  I really wouldn't care if this thing failed due to being released into a market already saturated with devices of this type, because I'd be too busy playing with whatever I had already bought.

I don't think that will happen, though.  This thing will probably get fast-tracked by someone, and if MS are smart they will push it along.  They are in so much shit at the moment in the tablet space due to Windows 7 not being right for the formfactor at all.  You can see this in the big push toward ARM and Android, as well as the huge jump in price from the three Asus tablets that run Android (each ~$500 USD) up to the one that runs Windows 7(~1k)

MS should know that gamers/enthusiasts will probably pay a premium for this type of device if it means they can play WoW on the train or someshit, and it's got the kind of wow factor that'd allow them to hype it as a top-end system in order to explain the price difference between it & the Android devices.

So wait, this is a pocket-sized machine that allows you to play WoW anywhere?

Good gods it's less than two years to December 21st 2012.
