The A.V. Club is running their Undercover series again this year, and they're soliciting suggestions for the songs you want to hear and the bands you want to see cover them. If you're not familiar, the way Undercover works is the A.V. Club puts together a list of 25 songs, and have 25 bands come in to cover them. Whenever a band chooses a song, it's stricken from the list, meaning that each subsequent artist has a smaller pool to choose from, until the last band has to tackle whatever the last song is that's left. Here are the videos from the 2010 edition (http://www.avclub.com/articles/ted-leo-and-the-pharmacists-cover-tears-for-fears,38869/), to see it in action.
The first part of the questionnaire is selections from lists of song candidates that the A.V. Club has picked themselves, but the real meat is in the last two sections, where you suggest three songs of your own, and then three bands you'd like to see in the videos. I chose:
Songs:
Kate Bush, "Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)"
The Germs, "Manimal"
Funkadelic, "Hit It and Quit It"
Bands:
Reigning Sound
Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings
Nobunny

Monster by Kanye West
Club Can't Handle Me by Flo-rida
Don't Fucking Tell Me What To Do by Robyn
Bear In Heaven
PS I Love You
Tweak Bird
-
I totally missed this happening last year, I guess? It's a pretty nifty concept.
Songs:
the Circle Jerks - Paid Vacation
Big Black - Racer X
Patti Smith - Rock N' Roll Nigger
Bands:
The Melvins
Yo La Tengo
Swans
-
Dog Kai Japandroids did Racer X as a b-side to Art Czars. It was pretty sick.
-
Songs:
White Light, White Heat - The Velvet Underground
Hit It and Quit It - Funkadelic
Heroes - David Bowie
Bands:
Nobunny
Swans
LCD Soundsystem

Here's what I facebook'd a few days ago:
Hey guess what we're going to stuff a ballot box. In order: Gary Numan, "The Waiting", Otis Redding, X, Human League, Fine Young Cannibals, "Raspberry Beret", Big Star, "Pancho and Fucking Lefty", "Heart of Rock and Roll", Pulp, Nine Inch Nails, Christopher Cross(!), Ted Leo.
Extra songs (beyond what you want): Swans "A Screw", Big Black "Kerosene", Phil Collins "In the Air Tonight".
Let's do this shit!
-
This is excellent! I loved last years videos; Owen Pallet's version of Game of Pricks is amazing.
-
Shame they don't give you a free choice. I would have Darkthrone cover Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.
-

Oh really? That's pretty baller, I guess.
Although if I had known that I would have probably chosen like, Kerosene instead
-
i went ahead and picked ridiculous stuff that definitely won't get picked. gotta shoot for the stars
songs
"monkey & bear" by Joanna Newsom
"van helsing boombox" by Man Man
"laughter reflected back" by Joan of Arc
Bands
Tweak Bird
Man Man
Shapes Like Dinosaurs
-
if everyone votes for tweak bird we should be good.
-
Tom Waits - Such A Scream
DEVO - Mongoloid
Jets To Brazil - Chinatown
Okkervil River
Man Man
Neko Case
Oh yeah.
-
I could actually see Man Man having a pretty good chance of doing it. I'm kind of kicking myself now for not having used Marnie Stern instead of Reigning Sound on mine.
Neko would be great. In my mind she's covering "We're Desperate".
-
Man Man might just be the worst band name I have ever heard.
-
Really? Worse than Hot Hot Heat?
Or !!! (it's pronounced chk chk chk, you know).
-
Even worse that those
-
Songs:
Deerhunter, "Wash Off"
Brian Eno, "Needle in the Camel's Eye"
TV on the Radio, "Wolf Like Me"
I think Wash Off might be the most coverable of these three with its simple structure and bass throb, but Needle in the Camel's Eye I'm most curious about how a band would take it.
Bands:
Twin Shadow
Nite Jewel
Nice Face
Twin Shadow's been doing so many like, sessions and appearances I feel like the AV Club could score 'em. Nite Jewel's a stretch and Nice Face probly ain't happening though.

http://www.avclub.com/articles/reminder-undercover-voting-ends-tonight,50150/
Today's the last day to help us pick the 25 songs for this year's A.V. Undercover. Head over to the voting page and cast your ballot. Even though we've had a huge response, there are still a couple of really tight races. (Don't even bother voting in the "Classic 120 Minutes" category, though -- "Birdhouse In Your Soul" is a runaway.) Voting will close at midnight central tonight, after which time the independent firm of MeJesseWaterhouseCooper will tally the votes and examine your suggestions for the remaining 11 songs. The full list will be published sometime next week, and the first video will air on March 15--three days before our sure-to-be-amazing SXSW day party, which I'm happy to announce will once again take place at The Mohawk. Anyway, help us make history.

Did they name themselves after that Bark Psychosis song? Which would be really cool!
-
no reference will keep it from being a horrible, horrible band name.
-
one of the best
-
If you motherfuckers had just followed my advice we'd get to hear "Pancho & Lefty" (http://www.avclub.com/articles/undercover-voting-results,51122/). 7 votes. 7 fucking votes. Dickholes.
Day = ruined.
-
that entire list is ruined. i think it was all the voting
fuckers
-
