Title: Moderator Pro-Tip/Suggestion
Post by: MillionDollar Belt Sander on 25 Jan 2011, 13:17
First of all,  the mod staff does good work here.    Got an idea though!

What I do when I moderate on various forums...  I use regular text for interaction with members and I switch to a different color when I have to moderate.  That way there is absolutely NO mistaking what is a mod call and what is me being my typical assholish and very juvenile self.  LOL BUTTS.

The xkcd forum does that and it works there.

What to use, though? Red seems too dramatic for a gentle nudge or a throat-clearing, and anything else would have to be explained.

Well, what I did at Rubber.Net when it was active...

I put this in my sig:

OFFICIAL FORUM MODERATOR
This is my serious voice otherwise I'm just here for the debates.

Blue Emu does that over on the Paradox Interactive boards...

I've been using italics for my own moderatorial posts, and colour when modifying someone else's post.  No-one has misunderstood so far, and I don't see any need for  a greater degree of formality.  We already have clear indicators of our moderator status (and people can after all turn off display of signatures, as indeed I do).

Fair enough.    Just thought I'd put the idea on the table.    :-)

A constructive suggestion.

A constructive suggestion.

My other idea is we should round up all the creepy-shippers, give them their own subforum... and once they are all inside change the password so they can't escape then DELETE THE FUCK OUT OF THAT SHIT.

...sadly the internet doesn't work that way.   :(

Please don't jump to judge too harshly; you don't get to see the PMs and apologies that happen behind the scenes.

Bold, red text should be used for Moderator instructions/warnings. Using anything else would be silly on the order of school teachers using colors other than red when marking up tests because "red is too harsh and hurts Johnny/Jill's feelings when they see it".

The second idea was intended to be utterly silly.

I do realise that; but it provided a hook for my remark anyway.

This particular color red, though, is nearly unreadable on my screen.  It doesn't help if you can't read what the moderator is trying to write.

The only thing that is appropriate to write in bold, red text is "Meltdown imminent!"

On grey, it's still hard to read.  Definitely not something you want for that particular message!

Displays just fine on my screen. Adjust your settings.

The moderators aren't responsible for your malfunctioning computer screen.

They aren't responsible for my colour blindness either, doesn't make it any easier to read...

The colour density of red is almost the same as that of the grey used for this board's background, and though it stands out, the lack of actual contrast makes it difficult to make out the letters.

Personally, my thick glasses also give a red shift if I'm not looking straight-on at the text, and it not only makes it harder to read, but damned annoying to watch the letters dance as I adjust my angle of view.

Colours that have high contrast with the grey work better, like white or yellow.  Pink's not bad, either, but I'm not sure I'd pay attention to a pink warning.  It's too close to the white.  Orange works, but it's getting a little "dark".

All the moderators of these forums have always relied on their words being understood, and on sending PMs to drive the point home if necessary.  This is the established way of working here, and I see no need to change that in this part of the forum or elsewhere.  The matter of style is in any case small beer alongside the big change, which has been the introduction of active moderation in this particular subforum.

One of the forums I moderate (metalworking forum) we have a ban-grinder.   We toss wankers, posers, chavs (it's hosted in England) and Russian SpamBorgs into it,  often daily.

It's a calibrated wide-gamut IPS screen with better than Adobe RGB colorspace (although I use sRGB because Firefox isn't really color-aware).  I really doubt that it's malfunctioning.  Maybe your settings are the ones that are off?  Although I will note that it's more readable against the darker grey background of quoted text, so Carl-E's probably right.

Speaking only for myself, I welcome ideas that have been shown to work on other forums.

Possibly an autoplay link to the  CSI Scream  (http://instantrimshot.com/index.php?sound=csi&play=true) that sounds off as it scrolls by, flashing.

If that doesn't work, try the Wilhelm Scream. (http://instantrimshot.com/index.php?sound=wilhelmscream)

I'm not a mod here, but I kinda like this. I've added a slight variation of it to my own sig in the forum where I do mod - thank you for the idea.

Some mod-specific smilies would also work.

Stuff like (http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y24/WdOdin/Smilies/emot-wrongful.gif)   (http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y24/WdOdin/Smilies/1687314623_deadhorse.gif)    and (http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y24/WdOdin/Smilies/emot-fuckoff.gif) would all work nicely, I think.

Also: (http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y24/WdOdin/Smilies/emot-iceburn.gif) and (http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y24/WdOdin/Smilies/burnsauce.gif) could be useful/appropriate at times, I think.

I think you're better off with words.  IsItColdInHere's [moderator] [/moderator] tags work well.

The second one reminds me that we used to use the term equinenecrosadism when referring to beating a dead horse

I'd also appreciate it if moderators would, instead of drastically rewriting objectionable posts, simply delete them.

And DEFINITELY don't take someone's posts, split it into a different thread, and THEN modify it beyond recognition.

This concerns a post in another part of the forum, and a moderator who is not active, as far as I know, in this part.  Discussion of the matter here would not be appropriate.
