Well kids it's that time of year again. The forums are going to meet up and hang out and that means FUN TIMES.
After last year's poll it was declared that the next meet-up would be held in lovely San Francisco, CA to appease our west coast pals that were too broke and/or lazy to go to the last three cons out east. Due to Jodie's trip to America for roller derby-ing, the dates have already been set for this shindig. We will be descending upon yet another unsuspecting city the second to last weekend in July (dates being the 22-25). As usual you are welcome to come early or stay longer, but for any interested parties the official dates are set for that Friday through Monday.
If you are at all interested in attending, let me know and I will add you to the running list of attendees.
See you guys in California!
(As per request all detail planning will occur via private group page on Facebook. Once you reply in this thread as either attending or probably attending, I will add you to the group. PM me to be added if you are a maybe that wants in on discussion or if we are not Facebook friends.)

i decided since moving to the west coast that i was pretty much almost definitely going to be making a trip to san francisco this summer, and that plan is still good and intact but the problem is that for the time being that trip doesn't really have anything to do with this so i have no idea what it looks like date-wise and i'm definitely not making two trips. anything can change this early though so consider me a very, very tentative maybe for now.
either way, hope to see you SFers when i'm there.
-
I am SO in, and I'll be cranking Bathory the whole way there
-
Not attending, fuck youse guys.
-
Consider me probably in. July? I'll probably be around; I'd still have to get those dates off of work though.
-
I'm regretfully not attending, fuck you.
-
probably. (okay,i realize that has been my answer for the last three whatevercon threads. it's just what i do)
-
We now have an event and a group on facebook, so I will be inviting people to both. Then again I might just delete the event as it's basically useless.
-
very much a "we'll see" at this stage as we're probably going to finally go on tour this august thanks to finding a drummer who understands how important it is to tour as a band
-
no i mean we've already found a guy
-
If your drummer calls it quits before your SF date, consider me an In for skinsman. Or dude shaking tambourine.

-
I have a friend who is going to cali for the summer and I was going to visit her maybe anyway so maybe? If I manage to save up enough money, I hear San Francisco is very far away though.
-
I'm a maybe. One of my friends and I were talking about cycling the West Coast. Although, if we make it as far as SF, coming from Seattle, I'd be surprised.
-
Incredibly unlikely unless we win the lottery to finance both this and our move.
If we win the lottery we will buy rounds though.
-
I want to be in Johnny's band!
Anyway! Yeah. Probably in. Don't think I'm doing anything with my life this summer. My sister's getting married at some point but it's def not in July. And if I have summer school well it's the weekend so it ain't no thing.
Fuck yay
-
Much as I'd love to return to the city of my birth, San Francisco, I think I may be headed to cooler climes this Summer. I'll see if I can shake it.
Also somebody should definitely alert Yelley, this is something she will be interested in.
-
john why
-
I have made commitments!
I will do my best, I promise.
-
I think I qualify as a 'probably' under current circumstances. I may not still be living in the area come July, but it shouldn't be too hard for me to take a few days off to come back.
If Johnny and Tania don't come I will be pouting SO HARD, though.
-
oh guys so seeing as how i am an unemployed dude going to school in WV i am probably not hitting this up.
-
The cheapest flight to SF I found is with Lufthansa German Airlines for £703.68 and involves a 19 hour stop in Montreal.
I think I'll skip this one.
-
Ryan come hang out with me again!
-
Come on a boat trip instead!
-
I am up for a boat trip because boats/
As rad as you are Shane, Boston is still too expensive for my tiny student budget.

Re-allocate yr (doubtlessly heroic) alcohol budget to a travel budget
-
As Steve mentioned it is unlikely we will make it, but there is some hope. We don't know where we will be living yet, or when our move will be, or how much money we will have to play with. It might work though if we can get 2 people to road trip it with us. It is still early for any sort of planning though.
-
Actually you know what I have a gay friend with easy access to cheap flights so this may be a bigger possibility than I thought.
Incidentally what are the prospects for room and board?
-
Re-allocate yr (doubtlessly heroic) alcohol budget to a travel budget
A little under £2k in four months.
-
That's a lot of booze, doggo.
-
Very unlikely. Bollocks. :(
-
If Johnny and Tania don't come I will be pouting SO HARD
-
I have a gay friend
do you have any non gay friends because i feel like you don't
-
Yeah, but they're all in Canada so you wouldn't know them
-
Damn it, the year you all actually come out to California, you do it during the one year I'm going to Comic Con. During Comic Con.
:(
-
oh dang anna i got to admit i was only saying "maybe" earlier just to be polite to these losers about the fact that i most likely won't be attending but gosh, i can't say no to you.
uh yeah well like i said i'll definitely be going to cali at some point this summer regardless of whether or not it's during this thing and right now it is looking like i might find be driving down, whether it's via renting a car or just finding a friend who's got one, because i want to see seattle and portland too. santa cruz is not very far away from san francisco at all! true love will being us together in the end
-
I am strongly leaning towards yes here. I was considering going to VidCon in LA, which is the last week of July. I'm thinking that going to San Fran a week early and hanging out with you bunch would be so awesome.
-
It would be. List is updated, people are added to the facebook group. We need more definitely attending!
-
As it stands now, I can afford to come. I just need to talk to my supervisor to double check that taking a few off in the summer is fine and there's nothing I have to do in terms of transferring into my PhD at that time. There shouldn't be.
-
Well obviously I am definitely in, as is Aaron.
Someone who knows stuff should suggest a hotel we can stay at so we will all be in the same vicinity. Or we could do the house thing again, whatevs!
And also people should think about places to eat! If there is anywhere standout that we HAVE to go to (like Kumars & Hot Dougs in Chicago....mmmm Kumars and Hot Dougs).
And someone should find a skate rink....haha (I'm kidding we don't have to go skating. I will be skating all week in Vegas!)
I hope you all can come! There will be 3 Australians! THREE! That is like, half our population or something!
-
(It's Kuma's. But close!)
-
GO SKATING.
-
<3 May
-
Put Amanda and I as maybes. We'll totally do it if we have the money, but right now our only source of income is student loans.
Of course, we also want to go to RollerCon because that sounds amazing too so who knows.
-
I will not be attending. It's too far and school has made me very poor. Oh wells.
-
Gonna have to be put down as regretfully sorry. Heading to Chicago in March and I won't have the money for another trip till next year.
-
The cheapest flight to SF I found is with Lufthansa German Airlines for £703.68 and involves a 19 hour stop in Montreal.
I think I'll skip this one.
A 19 hour stop in Montreal makes this trip almost 300% more appealing.
-
Already living in SF. Someone ping me when things are happening.
-
Also if you guys want good food I know where to go. It ain't cheap and it ain't fast though.
<edit>Actually the good Chinese food is relatively cheap, I take that back.</edit>
-
oh dang anna i got to admit i was only saying "maybe" earlier just to be polite to these losers about the fact that i most likely won't be attending but gosh, i can't say no to you.
:x
-
We should totes go skating
-
I'm actually going on holiday this year with my girlfriend to somewhere hot and beachy in Europe that is as of yet undecided, so I'm flatout saying NO this year instead of "maybe aww yeah if i save enough i can oh wait i have a stupid huge bill oh no bollocks".
-
I don't think I can do this and a week long trip to Phoenix, and a week off to go to Ragnarok all in 3 months. Fuck the summer with all these trips and bullshit.
-
We should totes go skating
Yessss! I promise to wear tiny pants!
-
-
go to Ragnarok
That's not even a place, dude. That's the end of the world.
-
Got all my money going towards a two-week camping trip to Colorado this summer, so this is not a thing that I can do.
-
I feel like I should splurge on something to celebrate graduation, and maybe this will be it! Put me down for a maybe?

Everyone should make a stopover in Montreal.
-
put me down as "maybe, but probably not" since California is like...not that far from me, but I am kind of a broke ass and my car sucks. Maybe if flights are cheap I could just fly down.....
i'll have to see what my life situation is like by then
-
I am not coming.
-
Unless Steve and Kat let me in on their massive windfall.
-
Unfortunately I have to have a summer job and pay for school instead. Unless Jon goes and brings me along, I will not be attending.
-
C'mon guys, we need more people than this! If I am going to fly to California it better be worth it. Just think! You will get to meet THREE Australians! How amazing is that?
-
i dunno, i've gotten a lot of visits since moving to vancouver. with this trend i feel pretty confident that if i just wait long enough and don't go anywhere pretty much every single person will end up stopping by at one point or another.
actually yeah on second thought, let's just do what we did for tronnocon where everybody just meets up in the city i already live in. it's a lot easier for me.
-
nah i'm just kidding, everybody stay out of my city i got shit to do
-
It is very unlikely that I will go!
I think the dates sort of coincede with the tryouts for the latin american championships or the nationals or something else relating to kendo. my life is sort of over.
-
I need a goal for this year so put me down as a probably maybe. It depends on flights and finances but my finances are good and I need something to look forward to.
Oh, and my birthday is on the 26th so... PARTY.
-
I'm not going. I'd like to but it's not happening.
-
C'mon guys, we need more people than this! If I am going to fly to California it better be worth it. Just think! You will get to meet THREE Australians! How amazing is that?
I already met one. They're confused by revolving doors and wear bright underwear. It's about as interesting as a 5 year old.
(Jimmy, I love you)
-
I have met two Australians! They were both awesome! I am sad that I can't meet the other two, but California is very far away and I too need to work over the summer to help pay for school.
This is when I hit myself over the head for giving up a full time job. I miss making money and travelling. In a two year break I went to Tronno, Boston, Chicago, and then Boston again to hang out with you guys. And then various other places with meat life friends. I miss travelling so much! I miss you guys too.
:c :c :c
-
I live 40 miles away from the city and I have gone to the city for much shittier reasons than 'meeting awesome people.'
-
I still hold hope in the possibility that even if you can't come to this Australian, at some point I'll hopefully be able to come to you (I deliver!)
-
I kind of go to people! I just do it in such a way where I will make the giant trip across the ocean if everyone else will then meet me at a place of my choosing in America. Man I should have made everyone come to Vegas for Rollercon. oh wells!
-
You know, i live in the goddamn land of Pokemon and cute gothy things and you never came to visit me.
-
By the way, this is going to be in the upcoming guide to "meeting parts of the internet":
When offered hot sauce by a strange Englishman, DO NOT TRY IT.
-
OR, you know, try a small dab.
Dabs are a good thing.
-
Basically don't drink it. Or you know, use it on food. A little goes a long way!
-
Long way indeed. I've only used about 2/3rd of that bottle.
-
Guys stop talking about silly things and start talking about SAN FRANCISCO because it is not a silly thing.
-
Even if I were going to San Francisco, it'd be earlier in the summer for Asian Man Records' 15th anniversary weekend. And Giants-As at the Coliseum.
-
internet meetups are pretty silly actually
-
i mean if that is your thing that is cool, sometimes it has been my thing too but don't kid yourself, spending hard earned money to meet the internet is definitely way nerdy and silly
-
You guys are cool and all, but from what I remember, most of you snore.
-
It is also spending hard earned money on a vacation, which is totally worth it. Getting to meet internet people while you're there is just a bonus!
-
You guys are cool and all, but from what I remember, most of you snore.
No, only Phil.
-
And Jimmy and Edith...
-
Shane wasn't there for Epic Phil Snore. Believe me, he would remember.
I do not snore. I am a good roommate. A good roommate you will not have.
-
I totally snore
-
Apparently I laugh in my sleep sometimes. I can't help but imagine that to be incredibly creepy, but my boyfriend says it is cute.
Also sometimes I sleep sex people. So. Best roommate?
-
You did not sleep sex me, or, to my knowledge, Jodie. What is up with that?
-
She didn't sleep sex me either. But then I am a pretty solid sleeper so maybe she did and neither of us remember.
-
I ain't no home-wrecker, Tommy, geez
-
Even if I were going to San Francisco, it'd be earlier in the summer for Asian Man Records' 15th anniversary weekend. And Giants-As at the Coliseum.
The Coliseum is a terrible place to see baseball, if you want to see a Giants-A's series go to the one at AT&T.
-
Jason and I will be there for part of it, maybe not all of it. We live about 2 hours out from the city and can drive in for a day or two.
Things to do:
-dim sum in Chinatown. I like Gold Mountain... I have brought many white people there and they were all terrified. I suppose Chinatown is nice too, if you like shopping for weird useless items.
-Haight-Ashbury. I feel like most of you could spend a whole day in Amoeba easily.
-Alcatraz. Tickets are pricey, but it's actually a nice way to spend the day. I found it interesting.
-Muir Woods. Not too far outside the city and some nice easy hiking through redwood groves.
-San Francisco Giants vs. Milwaulkee Brewers 7/22-7/24
-
The trick to finding the good restaurants in Chinatown is to find the one with minimal white people eating there
-
Aaron refuses to NOT do Alcatraz. SO even if you guys don't go, we will be :D Seems like it would be fun to do together though!
-
Sorry guys but if I were going to the US this year around that time it'd probs be to go to Comic Con, which is on that weekend.
-
Oh yeah I can totally understand wanting to go to ComicCon
I mean, it's loud, crowded, smells bad, consists of mile long lines to see bored celebrities(and there are lines just to get a chance to be in those lines), and expensive. Who wouldn't love that.
-

They're in Oakland the weekend of AMR 15, just sayin'.
-
The one year I went to Comic Con it actually didn't smell all that bad! Everything else is pretty true though.
-
And there is booze at ComiCon. And friends. And cosplay. And Awesome.
-
Pretty sure there will be plenty of booze in San Francisco too. Also friends. Probably not cosplay but I suppose it could be arranged if people really feel like including it.
-
I'm already adamant that we need an excuse to do fancy dress
-
I wanted to do something fancy dress-ish when I was in Sydney but we never did. I mean, Lunchy and Max and I went to dinner and that was nice, but we were still wearing jeans, so I do not think that counts.
:(
-
I am all up for fancy dress somethings, as I have a very nice dress that I bought a year ago and still haven't worn. It makes me look gooood you have no idea.
Oooh let's have a picnic in a park! Fancy picnic!
-

Shoulda come to Melbourne.
-
awww I want to fancy picnic in a park. Guys the more awsome ideas you come up with the more likely this girl is to throw caution to the wind an blow all our savings on going.
-
Picnic in Buena Vista Park! That way I can be lazier ;D
-
The last fancy picnic in a park (AusCon '09) was super duper awesome, so this guy says yes. It was especially rad when we all got on the bus after leaving the park. For extra authenticity we could all get super drunk the night before and be fancy and hungover!
-
We should go to that park that's in the opening credits of Full House.
-
Fancy picnic!
I wore the same dress to Auscon fancy picnic and CHicagocon prom. I can't wear it anymore, I have too much derby booty!
Maybe I will wear this
(http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/ebony_willow/pokemons1.jpg)
is this fancy enough?
-
YES
You can't tell properly but that word is italic, bold, underlined, glowing red and in capitals. Srs bsns.
-
Golden Gate Park is rad as hell, we could go to the Japanese Tea Garden and go see the bison just chilling in their little enclosure thing.
That's right, San Francisco has a public park with bison just wandering around in the middle of it. It's pretty awesome.
-
I am loving this fancy dress picnic idea. Jodie, that dress is made of awesome.
-
awww I want to fancy picnic in a park. Guys the more awsome ideas you come up with the more likely this girl is to throw caution to the wind an blow all our savings on going.
Come to Atlanta Easter weekend and we will have fancy shenanigans to put all these poseurs to shame.
-
if you know what I mean
-
We should go to that park that's in the opening credits of Full House.
Mentioned this idea to my wife.
She started jumping up and down and emitting a high pitched noise.
-
If a good combination of Johnny, Tommy, Sam, Tania plan to go then I might make the effort, I try to hit SF every summer anyway, and realistically I need to meet two of those dudes.
Otherwise I might show up and just steal Dovey for repeated trips to Self Edge and Union Made combined with a bunch of heavy drinking in Dolores Park.
-
You cannot steal Dovey! I will chain him to myself if I have to!
-

Took a picture of Corona Heights Park out my apartment window today. I <3 it.
http://dscoder.com/images/corona.jpg
-
Too much time on streetview and gmaps instinctively made me attempt to drag the image around to try and get a better view of the rest of the city. fml.
-
This sounds like a lot of fun, but I doubt I could afford it. Unless I carpool with someone, it's about $240 plus money for food, lodging, and all the touristy shit.
-
If I were driving I would be all "HECK YEAH CARPOOL" but I think Fargo to San Francisco is just a bit much. Flying is much more fun.
-
Goddamn I am going to try my damnedest to attend this. I would seriously love to visit SF and hanging out with QC peeps would rule. As an aside, if I do come, how long would people suggest for? It's about a 14 hour flight so it would have to be a minimum of a week but I'd dearly like to come for 2 or so. Is it easy to explore the surrounding region without a car as I doubt people will rent me one...
-
I mean, there's BART and buses.
-
I don't own a car, nor do I know how to drive one. I do ok :)
-

Funny, I took this not dissimilar photo of Bernal Heights the same day:

The weather (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/NvrTooMuchPython/IMG_0904.jpg) was amazing (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/NvrTooMuchPython/IMG_0906.jpg) this weekend (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/NvrTooMuchPython/IMG_0910.jpg) in San Francisco (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/NvrTooMuchPython/IMG_0918.jpg).
-
Well Rizzo you could always try to convince someone to host a QC summer camp like Edith did for Chicagocon. we had a slew of foreign visitors that wanted to spend more time here so we all crashed at her house for a little over a week before doing Chicago itself.
Anyone up for it?
-
I would definitely be up for staying longer too, if someone was willing to be my gracious host.
-
If only I lived on that side of the country...
-

I'm not sure if this is helpful or not, but I might be able to host some people before/after. I am in San Luis Obispo, however, which is about 3.5 - 4 hours driving distance (maybe 5 - 6 hours by train?) south of San Francisco down the coast. If you can find someone closer to the city, that would probably be better.
-
Well Eed was about three and a half hours outside of Chicago, we drove into the city for the weekend. If there's a train people could take in I imagine there would be takers, if you were willing.
I might even be up for a day or two, if it would be alright.
-
Camp Eed was in Indiana, whilst the Con was in Chicago. It was great! But probably only if you have sufficient drivers (remember to account for baggage too, we rather surprised Eed with the size of our suitcases).
Hey LIZ I WAS GOING TO SAY THAT FIRST.
-
LOOKS LIKE I WIN THIS ROUND.
-
That would be rad but it's all rather dependent on me gettting a decent paying job that's going to be ok with me taking 1.5-2 weeks off in July. Aside from Jodey (who I assume will be rollerconning?) and Dovey I'd be the only international right?
-
As of right now, yes, but there might be a few American types that would want to join in. We had a couple at Eed's for part of the time, just depends on who is able to take time off.
-
That is cute how you spelled my name Riz, I don't think I have ever seen it spelled that way before! <3 (It is Jodie)
Yeah, I have a date with Jordan & Amanda pre SFCon and a date with the roller derbies post SFCon. But you kids have fun!
-

There's Tania but Canada doesn't count.
-
nah i'll come clean, i'm pretty definitely not doing this
-
America wins again
-
you're just jealous cos my city has more heroins than yours
-
no
-
OK, since there are people actually interested in staying here, I will get back to this thread in a few days about whether or not / when that would be okay.
I have a hotel reservation for ComicCon but the friend who was going to buy our tickets crapped out (and tickets got sold out in a matter of hours), so I am trying to get our hotel refunded. So my answer will be dependent upon (1) not being in San Diego and (2) my boyfriend. I will keep you up to date, thread.
-
Sounds good! If it doesn't work for you to host we could maybe ask Yelley nicely, though I don't know how well it would go over considering they are planning a wedding. But perhaps!
-
jason and i are about 2 hours from san francisco. people can stay at our place too if they like. the wedding is in september, so doesn't really matter.
-
I just remembered when my cousin was planning her wedding, they had stuff eeeeeeverywhere in their apartment. No room for anyone to stay over, much less multiple people.
Then again they did have a tiny apartment, that might be part of it...
-
BURRRMP
So this thing is getting really close! Ahhhhh. I'd like to find out what everybody else is doing, get a proper revised attending/not attending list (it seems lots of people have lost all of their money between when this thread started and now) and really solidify dates- especially if there's gonna be a Camp Yelley or Camp Elizzybeth or whatever.
Basically, everybody who has contributed to this thread in past or shown any interest at all, can you please check in and give us/me an idea of what yr plans are RIGHT NOW regarding this Con. I'm doing all of my research for this right now, working out my budget &c. and if I can get the info necessary I'll book real soon as well, but obviously I don't want to book things and then find out, say, that nobody is going to be in SF when I actually arrive or that everybody was going to come in early and I'd miss out on things.
Also, I have some questions that I hope local folks will be able to help me out on: I have decided that I am going to catch a Greyhound to Seattle, and then I am going to take the train down the West Coast to San Francisco, because it's something I always wanted to do anyway, so this is a nice time to do it. It seems that Amtrak doesn't have a station in SF proper, but the Coast Starlight train which goes down the coast stops in Oakland. I can get a bus to somewhere in SF as part of my Amtrak booking, but there are several bus stops/stations that it lists. Which of these:
San Francisco, CA - Civic Center Bus Stop (SFV)
San Francisco, CA - Ferry Building Bus Station (SFC)
San Francisco, CA - Financial District Bus Stop (SFF)
San Francisco, CA - Convention Center Bus Stop (SFM)
San Francisco, CA - Fisherman's Wharf/Pier 39 Bus Stop (SFW)
San Francisco, CA - Caltrain Station Bus Stop (SFP)
(from this page (http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentServer?c=Page&pagename=am%2FLayout&p=1237405732508&cid=1237608345105))
should I go to? Alternatively, is there some other bus service or something which would make more sense to take? Should I just book the train ticket to Oakland and find some other means of transportation to get to wherever it is we're staying or meeting?
I guess this is all a bit of a moot point, since nobody knows where we are staying. Hopefully we can sort that out right soon too, hm? Let's not let this thread die again, interested parties. And let's definitely not let the Con die, that would suck. I want Internet hugs and I want them IN LATE JULY, PLZ.
-
IIRC, there's a few BART stations in Oakland that'll get you to San Francisco.
also, dear San Franciscoans,
I miss you dearly, but alas I really cannot make it out there this year. I did buy a Giants hat to make up for it, though. Please make Patrick take you all to Amoeba while you are in town. Your wallet will hate you, but your turntables will love you.
-
Addendum: Hey apparently the Emeryville Amtrak station is closer to SF proper than Oakland. So, uh, same question as before, but with Emeryville.
-
Okay so I'm probably spending my summer in Berkeley doing school there (which is AWESOME) sooo. I'm not sure where I am living--I might just stay with my sister so I can save money on rent, but if my friend sublets her apartment to me and two of my other friends, then I might do that, and if I do that, I would be down to host people because I don't think things through very properly.
Yeah Dovey I don't think you would need to find a bus to SF because it's much easier to just take the BART there. I'm trying to google map things but I'm very bad at planning as well, there should be buses to nearby bart stations, i don't know...
Once I finalize my summer plans though, maybe i can just go get you
I need to stop offering so many services to people purely out of excitement, it's gotten me in trouble enough times that i should stop lol
-
As I've had a slightly more difficult time than expected getting a job I'm not going to be able to come :( :( I'll try harder next year!
-
OK so, I am definitely going to be in San Luis Obispo around that time--did not get ComicCon tickets and managed to get rid of my San Diego hotel room, so that's all good. My plan is to definitely come up to San Francisco and hang out for at least a couple of those days, maybe all of them (depending on the budget & whether or not I have a job). If people are planning to rent out a block of hotel rooms or a house or something and need more takers,
If people wanted to stay here before or after the actual QCon dates, I'm totally down & my boyfriend's ok'd it. We have a queen blow-up mattress and a couch, so we can sleep 3 people quite comfortably and more if people are ok with sleeping on the floor.
Anyone who's interested, PM me for address/phone number/etc. And OH, also!
the Coast Starlight train which goes down the coast
That train also stops in SLO, about a mile from my house. I don't know if that helps anyone at all.
According to Google Maps, getting into SF from an Amtrak station is easiest this way (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=245+2nd+Street,+Oakland,+CA+94607+(Amtrak+Oakland+Station:+OAKLAND)&daddr=san+francisco&geocode=CcO8PZzhKceNFcWvQAId6Ui2-CHpnvpL-qJH_inzmhJTyYCPgDEITBSr7hhALQ%3BFVJmQAIdKAe0-CkhAGkAbZqFgDH_rXbwZxNQSg&hl=en&mra=pd&dirflg=r&ttype=dep&date=04%2F04%2F11&time=6:39pm&noexp=0&noal=0&sort=def&sll=37.77493,-122.399866&sspn=0.272997,0.612488&ie=UTF8&z=12&start=0). People from the city may have a better sense, though.
-
It looks like my participation is going to come down to what Stats class I can get in this Summer... I've attempted to get an override for the May-June course but I may be stuck in the June-August course, which would take me out of the running.
-
Nope, no money. Goddammit, Dovey, why didn't you stop here?!
-
It's because I'm afraid of you
-
Jason and I will be there for at least one day, hopefully for two - Saturday and Sunday.
We are 2 hours from SF and about 1 hour from the BART station that will take you into downtown. I have a spare bedroom with a full size bed, a couch that uncomfortably sleeps two, and a blowup full size air mattress. Anyone is welcome to crash at my place before or after, but Jason and I will be working and might not be around the whole time. Anyone interested should PM me for details.
-
I can't believe this is happening like two months before I (might) move to San Francisco. You fucks.
-
NOOOOOO
-
Dovey knowing which bus to take would require you to be more aware of where you're staying. However, Civic Center is gonna be in the general area of UN Plaza (near the big library and the school I almost went to!), and Pier 39/Fishermen's Wharf is gonna be, well, right where it says it is. That is the best answer I can really give; then again I'm not sure exactly what the question is!
By time this con rolls around, I will necessarily be living in my own place. I don't know yet what the full arrangement will be, but I know it will be in Berkeley. I will obviously be coming to whatever winds up happening (all I'll have to do is get the time off work), but I don't know yet if I can necessarily have people stay. I will be updating this and the Facebook thang as things develop!
-
odds that i'm not doing this are pretty high too, guys. i'm sorry! i just have so much shit to do this summer. it's going to be my first year in three where i don't hang out with internet types. it's going to feel weird.
-
Dovey knowing which bus to take would require you to be more aware of where you're staying.
Yeah, aware of this. I think I'm just gonna catch the train to the Emeryville Amtrak station and hop on a BART from there, which seems smarter, no less easy and saves me having to make a decision about that stuff when I'm booking the train ticket.
-
Johnny, if my experience is any indication, you'll be twice as set on making it to a thing no matter what next year. At least, that is what happened with me and Glasgow. So, y'know, start saving money, I guess.
-
I'LL BE THERE :D Obvs.
Dovey is road tripping with The Big A and I to Rollercon which is AWESOME! Because Dovey is better than all of you lame Americans.
Does anyone have any reccomendations of hotels or areas where I should be getting a hotel when I book (WHICH WILL BE SOON)? I would love it if we could all stay in the same hotel (it doesn't look like there will be enough of us to make renting a house plausible) or at least in places nearby :D
-
It's so cute that you call Aaron The Big A.
Lemme know if you find a hotel. It would be cool if we could stay in the same place, but I'm trying to keep costs down as well.
-
Hahah my dad gave him that name and it kind of caught on. Now my friends call him that too :D
I will be trying to keep costs down too, I will let you know where we stay :D
-
I am getting paid on Friday and I am booking damn near everything. Train fare, bus fare, air fare, Rollercon pass, Las Vegas hotel, and probably car rental if I can find a decent deal.
Also, I am pretty sure that I am going to have to stay overnight in Seattle before getting on the train. The bus I'm looking at taking arrives in Seattle at 1615 on Wednesday the 20th of July and the train for SF departs at 0945 the next day. Any Seattle people around, wanna hang out for a night?
-
I was just thinking that although the same people who went to the PRF BBQ in Chicago last year can't make it (namely me, Tania, Andy, JC, Mason and Christophe) due to general busyness, Sam's band Half Mile Fox Fur is playing this year. Thus, if anybody is in or around Chicago or just wants an excuse to go, they should use this opportunity. Plus you'd get to see a bunch of other great bands and chill with good people at the BBQ. Just a thought!
I might be able to go this year maybe
-
Guys can I get in on the Facebook thing so as to remain in the loop on the plans for this? As long as I get a car for the summer I would definitely be interested in coming, since my bro lives in Santa Clara anyway.
-
If I go anywhere this summer, I'm going to a wedding. A wedding of forumites. The ultimate act of webcest.
The one in Boston, not the one in California. East Coast Rulez.
-
yelley and jason 4evaaaaa

I thought that was NEXT summer. Rachel asked me for my address to send an invite, but I didn't get one yet.
-
That's because we haven't sent them yet. They'll be going out in the next couple weeks.
-
Her FB message thingy and their website says this summer. Be on top of things, gawd!

<3 Dovey is the BEST! We are going to have the BEST TIME! Australians unite yo!
Also if you pick a SF hotel let me know and I will pick the same one!
i wish I booked everything ages ago :( everythign has gotten more expensive and more stupid WAH
-
That's because we haven't sent them yet. They'll be going out in the next couple weeks.
Rachel goddammit get married like July 15th or something. I'll be around that weekend for specific reasons (*cough*MANCHESTER UNITED*cough*)
Hey and tell Jon to return a damn text message. I want to see you guys this Saturday!
-
You don't go to weddings on weekends of football games! You won't be able to stop fussing about the dang game and will drive people (me) crazy!
Also, Shane, if you go, we should be internet wedding dates. Unless you have a lady friend that's coming, then I may have to fight her.
-
A) The game is Wednesday the 13th. But I was planning on staying with some friends for the weekend.
B) As of the moment, I am lady-friend free. We shall make a very awesome couple, Linds!
-
Dude Sam you have a beard. Just wear a Methadones shirt and they'll think you're local.
-
Aw, Sam, take the eL. Everything is way simpler that way.
-
Oh yeah well why don't you just marry Chicago
-
Hang on
You are marrying a surly punk rock lesbian with terrible eating habits
It all makes sense now
-
Rachel goddammit get married like July 15th or something. I'll be around that weekend for specific reasons (*cough*MANCHESTER UNITED*cough*)
Do yr bro a solid and toss incendiaries onto the field for me, yeah?
Not moving to Berk, turns out.
-
Hey just dropping by so I can put a reminder in here that we gotta go to an In 'n' Out Burger while we're in SF
-
I will eat whatever tasty foods you take me to!
-
if you guys are looking out for regional foods, i can bring up cactus cooler if i go to bako the weekend before
-
I HAVE PAID FOR MY FLLLIIIIGGHHTTTSSSSSSSSSSSS!
-
Okay, fuck it, I'm going to go to this thing because I have never been to the West Coast, and it's probably the last summer that I can do it as a student. So I am breaking open the piggy bank. 22nd to 25th of July in San Francisco yeah? I was thinking of travelling all across the coast.
-
yusssssssss
-
Woooooooo
I HAVE PAID FOR MY FLLLIIIIGGHHTTTSSSSSSSSSSSS!
Me too! Also: The bus and train from here to SF, My Rollercon pass, Las Vegas hotel and the hostel for Seattle. I spent like $850 wooooooooo. All I need know is to book the SF accommodation (any more ideas re: that, anybody? I've found a few hotels but it'd still be cool if we could find a place where we could all stay together) and car rental. THIS IS HAPPENING :psyduck:
-
if you guys are looking out for regional foods, i can bring up cactus cooler if i go to bako the weekend before
Dude you can buy that shit here in Livermore, let's bombard everybody with it because it RULES
-
The gas station next to the Hampton Inn in Livermore DID NOT HAVE ANY.
Trust me, I spent like 5 minutes staring at the cooler one night and sadly bought some strawberry soda.
-
oh yes it's finally fucking confirmed that i'm living in east bay for the summer so hoorays! hoorays all around! no apartment, though.
-
While I'm still drunk and all touchy-feely lemme just say how incredibly excited I am to see everybody in SF. I hope y'all are ready for monster hugs
-
yussssssssssss
-
Dovey, what bus service are you using to get from Seattle to San Francisco? Cheapest flights are to SF, so might travel to Seattle and then bus it back.
-
Not bus! Amtrak! Train! Coast Starlight (http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentServer?c=AM_Route_C&pagename=am%2FLayout&cid=1241245648567) line, departing from Seattle on 7/21 at 0945
-
Cool, I looked into that, it's alright for price. I was thinking of hitch hiking up the coast (if i can convince my friend to come with me - outlook good) to save on moneys (god fucking damnit flights are expensive) I just wanted to be sure I would make it back from Seattle on time for a flight home. I'm still deciding whether I want to do the trip and end in SF or start and SF and then road trip. Might be an idea to be in a city for some time while I get adjusted to the time difference?
I was thinking of subletting my flat during the first two weeks of the Fringe to recuperate some costs.
-
I'm thinking similar things. Mostly because I am sitting next to StaedlerMars, but also because I am thinking similar things.
I might buy a boat and sail there from Vancouver. I have some connexions in the bay area for sailing, so... I think that would be cool too. Anyone else here done that?
I, also, might sublet.
-
Hey just dropping by so I can put a reminder in here that we gotta go to an In 'n' Out Burger while we're in SF
There are better burgers here. Much better. We took a friend from out of the country to get In 'n' Out at his insistence and he was... rather disappointed.
Joe's Cable Car or Super Duper are my recommendations if we want non-super-fancy burgers.
-
We can do both or something, I just want a goddamned mustard-fried hamburger with thousand island dressing
-
The gas station next to the Hampton Inn in Livermore DID NOT HAVE ANY.
Trust me, I spent like 5 minutes staring at the cooler one night and sadly bought some strawberry soda.
Bah, that part of town doesn't have anything cool. 'Cept Costco, and UCBC (UC Behind Costco, a.k.a. Las Positas College).
oh yes it's finally fucking confirmed that i'm living in east bay for the summer so hoorays! hoorays all around! no apartment, though.
Oh my god you and Kabir and I need to make music fucking STAT
-
If I'm coming, my supercool ladyfriend is not :(
-
UC Behind Costco
Would. Go. There.
-
With LasPo, I think that's somehow overselling it.
-
We need to go to Pier 39 to see the supple, surly, sunning sea lions.
-
Also gotta see whether a pelican tries to eat my phone
-
MIRROR MAZE
DRUNK MIRROR MAZE
FOUR LOKO MIRROR MAZE
ARE YOU GUYS GOING TO BUY ME FOUR LOKO
-
I suppose I could ship the 10 or so cans I have left to you
-
Please? I still haven't tried it yet.
-
Didn't I have some when you stopped out here!
-
I guess not? I can't imagine I would've turned down the opportunity were it offered to me. Although I was too busy drinking hecka fancy beers so maybe I would've.
-
Also gotta see whether a pelican tries to eat my phone
Fucken magnets, how do they work?
Guys I am excited. ESPECIALLY about sea lions.
-
Hey guys, will someone PM me about getting the Facebook invite so I can keep further tabs on this thing? It is looking increasingly likely I will come, to see you folks and some other folks and family folks and have a fun vacation with the lady/friends.
-
To get added to the facebook group you need to be facebook friends with someone in the group. If you want to PM me your profile URL or full name I'll send you a request and add you once we're pals. Sound good?
-
O.K. Tickets bought.
What?
I'll be landing in SF on the 21st. I have yet to look for accommodation, but chances are that I'm either going to stay in a hostel or couch surf. I know that is not what other people are doing, but as of about 10 minutes ago I am broke. I will also slowly trek my way up the coast up to Vancouver afterward (after making a stop in LA I think). So might not be going along to Las Vegas, but I'll see how things evolve. Just have to make sure I'm Vancouver by the 1st of September.
Fuck. Yes.
-
L.A. and Vancouver are in two different directions.
-
Yeah I know this, hence the "i think"
-
Okay just making sure.
P.S. I'm freaking psyched.
-
Vancouver
so nice of you all to come visit me! i didn't even have to ask
-
Don't do it! She probably smells
-
She's got ants too
-
GUUUYS THIS IS GOING TO BE AWWWEEESOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMEEEEEEEEEE
This time my money is worth more than your stupid money! YESSS!
-
Well folks I just bought my plane tickets finally so I will be there fo sho unless I have to sell my tickets to pay for medical bills or something, I don't know.
Get ready San Francisco!
(Also if anyone is still looking for somewhere to stay talk to me/head on over to the facebook group I have some ideas.)
-
This time my money is worth more than your stupid money! YESSS!
Already painfully aware of this :B
-
I don't know how many people are still in on this, but if you are we might have a place for you to sleep! Jodie+Aaron, Simon, Dovey, and I are renting a two bedroom apartment with two full beds and a pull-out couch. If anyone decides to arrive last minute we could sleep one more, then we're down to floor space. Also everyone that lives in the area you will definitely be invited over for some sort of gathering at some point I would imagine. Our place has a deck/patio with a grill so we could do a barbecue or some such.
So excited!
-
is there an agenda planned yet? it's looking like jason and i won't be able to spend the night out in sf but we can come for either saturday or sunday - do we know what we're doing on both of these days so we can decide?
-
I don't think we've gotten into any real planning yet. As of right now the one biggest thing I want to do is see the ocean. Jodie wants to see the seals. And I think we plan on spending a fair amount of time in Golden Gate Park, but beyond that I don't think we've really created an itinerary of any sort.
-
Also in the very least Aaron and I are going to Alcatraz! Everyone doesn't have to come if they don't want to, but I am pretty sure he would kill me in my sleep if I didn't take him there!
-
ooooh yes that would be wonderful too.
-
Good news! My job is flying my to San Francisco!
Bad news! I get off my job on the 30th. TOO LATE. :(
If anyone wants to hang out with me and Simon after that'd be rad though.
-
okay we will come on the day that does not include alcatraz. it is pretty rad, but we have been there twice and it is not cheap.
-
If anyone wants to hang out with me and Simon after that'd be rad though.
How long are you gonna be around? I'm local, I love socializing, and I definitely love doing stuff I haven't done before. I've been to the City a million times but there's no shortage of cool shit to see and do. I can provide my mobile number if you'd like.
-
Hey Richard does that mean you'll be in SF on the 1st? I could probably just ask you this on chat, but whatever.
Yeah Patrick we should definitely hang out. I think I've decided to just chill a couple of days in SF after everyone heads out waiting for Richard so if there's anything you can think of, I'll probably be game.
-
Guys have we mentioned the Haight? It's hard to imagine even going to San Francisco without at least stopping by there. That place fucking rules, even if you're not a filthy hippie.
-
Very doable. The apartment we're renting is in the Castro and google maps says there is a nice bus that will take us straight there. Or we could walk for half an hour, who knows.
Tell me more awesome things that I need to do while I'm in SF!
-
AMOEBA!
or even better, AMOEBA BERKELEY.
-
And uh, take a trip inland to Danville and tell my cousin to CALL ME ONCE IN A WHILE.
-
go to the westfield and go to the food emporium and get cream puffs from beard papas
well
that's really all i do in the city
-
You will have to take us and show us the best places.
-
AMOEBA!
or even better, AMOEBA BERKELEY.
i like the SF amoeba better, it's bigger with more listening stations. i think. well, i only went to the berkeley amoeba that one time with you and patchy, but i remember thinking the SF one was better the first time i went there.
the haight is pretty awesome and you should all go there. aside from dirty hippies, thrift stores, and smoke shops, there is also a bettie page store that sells 50s pinup dress replicas and a john fluevog store that sells the best shoes ever.
i don't know how keen you all are on chinese food, but there are some awesome dim sum places. golden mountain on broadway is a good choice - it's big, always packed, and you'll probably be the only white people there. it's a pretty safe bet that if all the locals eat there it's one of the better ones. it's at the end of chinatown too, so it would be a good spot if chinatown is on the agenda - dim sum brunch then walk down grant.
i know that union square is a popular choice for tourists, but i recommend skipping it. it's nice shopping, but it's mostly the same stores you can see anywhere else in the country and there are so many other specific to SF things that you could do instead. the flagship old navy is nice though, if you're into that kind of thing. and the cable car thing stops and turns in the center of union square, so there's that.
alcatraz is nice, $26ish for a ticket but it's well worth it if you've never been. i didn't think i would like it much the first time i went, i went because jason really wanted to, but it was a good day.
if anyone's up for it and you can get enough cars together, muir woods is a short drive across the golden gate bridge. there are good places to stop for bridge pictures and a nice sandy beach along the way and some short, easy hiking trails through redwood groves once you get to the woods. crowded on weekend days and parking can be difficult. and the road to get there is really winding, so not for people who easily get carsick. like me.
oh, and SF has some awesome yarn shops....
-
All I'm sayin', anybody who goes to the Bay Area and doesn't hit up Berkeley is basically going to Paris and ditching the Louvre. Telegraph Ave. is legendary, of course, but there's also College Ave. below Dwight. It's like Telegraph, but with less gross people.
And uh, take a trip inland to Danville and tell my cousin to CALL ME ONCE IN A WHILE.
I'M ON IT!
-
Anyone BUT Patrick.
-
Okay I think we can swing a trip to Berkeley I guess. So many things to do.
Also who wants to go to the zoo? If I am the only one I will go on Thursday before everyone arrives but I can also wait if others want to join me.
-
Yeah, I'll be in town on the first! Let's hang out Patrick. Simon, maybe you can come too.
I don't think I'll have a phone number. I might have skype, depending on wireless availability. Things I want to do: I don't know. Go see the Emperor's grave. That's pretty high up there.
-
The Emperor? wat
As for wireless availability, well, it's no Luxembourg (apparently they've now got free wireless in the capital city center, their taxes at work), but you can probably mooch off of some fool's home network no problem. In a city of millions there's bound to be one or two per block.

Man, I like this cat already:
Whoever after due and proper warning shall be heard to utter the abominable word "Frisco", which has no linguistic or other warrant, shall be deemed guilty of a High Misdemeanor, and shall pay into the Imperial Treasury as penalty the sum of twenty-five dollars.
SO G. SO FUCKING G.

GUYS IN TWO WEEKS I WILL BE AT THE AIRPORT WAITING TO GE ON A PLANE TO FLY TO AMERICA!
OH MY GOD!
-
ME TOO!
Also, I just learned that Memory Tapes are playing on the 21st, Earth on the 22nd, something called Noise-BBQ on the 23rd, Fucked Up, Cold Cave, and Cults (all different places) on the 25th, Yuck on the 26th, Maps & Atlases on the 29th.
I would die of poverty if I lived in SF.
Also also I just got my visa waiver thing sorted.
-
Guys... I can't come to the July meetup... but I'm gonna be in SF 8-16th November. Is anyone keen to hang out then?
-
Earth on the 22nd
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
-
go to Japan Town and buy a banana keeper. It will make your life way better.

I'm local, hit me up.

I'm down with going. Can we go?
-
Guys... I can't come to the July meetup... but I'm gonna be in SF 8-16th November. Is anyone keen to hang out then?
i'm local enough, i'm down.
-
Also local. Someone will have to actually tell me where people are this time though :P
-
You are about 5 days late on this although Simon is still in the general vicinity and I am definitely still a Livermoron
-
Shit man I'm sorry my phone died on Sunday and nobody else had your number. By the time I got it charged I was exhausted and forgetful and then we all slept and people went home.
My bad. :(
-
You guys suck. Post some damn photos already. JEEZE.
-
I know holy crap. I'm pretty sure every Bostoncon was at least live-Meeboed/skyped/tweeted.
-
All of my photos are up on Facebook!
Too lazy to link them here.
