The White Stripes broke up. (http://www.avclub.com/articles/the-white-stripes-break-up,51227/)
-
Not surprised.
-
I figured Jack forgot he was even in that band.
-
it's been a long time coming but it still makes me sad. the white stripes have been one of my favorite bands for....fuck i don't even know how long now....a long fucking time. they are one of only two or three bands who's entire discography i actually own, like, on cd.

Fun band. I always jam the s/t and De Stijl. All their albums have at least a few good songs, though...except that one right before Icky Thump.
-
we don't talk about that one. it did have one or two songs on it that i liked, but on the whole it was pretty garbage.
De Stijl is the best.
also the white stripes' cover of "one more cup of coffee" is one of the greatest things ever recorded. maybe i'm biased because that song is sort of an important relic of my young childhood, but still. i actually like it better than dylan's. :psyduck:

^ That.

Yeah I guess you could have held out some hope but you can usually tell when indefinite hiatuses are permanent and this one felt that way.

The article I (didn't) read that informed me of this started with the question, "is rock finally dead?"
I stopped reading since the article headline was the entire story anyway.
-
oh my god link plz
-
Not entirely unexpected. A bit disappointing considering De Stijl (lump me in with that album's fanbase), but Icky Thump was the worst album I'd heard in a long time.
-
I misquoted the article.
It wasn't asking if rock was dead as a result of this breakup.
The author was announcing rock is, in fact, dead as a result of this breakup.
I still stopped reading after "one of the lone beacons of loud guitars, Zeppelin-worthy riffs" (http://new.music.yahoo.com/blogs/amplifier/88392/the-white-stripes-officially-divorce-band-announces-split-in-letter-to-fans/)

You have some really high standards then.
-
seriously.
Icky Thump is excellent and is part of what makes this break up so sad. They had finally shown a return to form and made a fantastic record (after the horrible crap that was Get Behind Me Satan) and there was a glimmer of hope, of light, at the end of the tunnel...but now here we are.
I just hope Jack doesn't get too into that awful Dead Weather shit, and focuses more on The Raconteurs or something else entirely because he's got alot of great music left in him, I think, and I'm fully looking forward to whatever it might be.

Their versions of "Death Letter" and "St. James Infirmary Blues" are two of the best covers I've ever heard.

Means Meg can devote more of her time working on her sex tapes.
