Hey everybody, i am a trailer editor in hollywood. everyone knows that the right piece of music can make a good trailer into something great. Check out the Battle: Los Angeles trailer below. Its these hidden gems and obscure tracks that can blow an audience away. i certainly would rather be cutting a trailer with a piece of interesting, evocative music than a piece top 40 trash. I have been lurking these threads for a while now and i have been amazed at the variety and depth of musical tastes here. Example, today i grabbed an album by Heinali out of the WinkWink thread and got so stoked to find a trailer to cut this into. Then i thought, there are probably tracks galore out there that would be great for something like this, but i don't have any chance of finding no matter how long i look.
So now i ask you . . . who has a great music cue that they would like to see in a future trailer? throw out some suggestions . . .

If you were to use any Moondog song in a trailer I think I would get a boner that would puncture the seat in front of me.
-
yeah I gotta admit the use of that Johann Johannsson song in that trailer is pretty brilliant
I feel like Silk Rd by Grails could work in a trailer of some kind, perhaps: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rAnbR2a2IxA

I concur with this statement.
-
huh. i'd have imagined your job would require you to use songs off the licensed soundtrack for the film, wouldn't it?
-
In JC's world, a quarter of all film soundtracks begin with either Lux Aeterna or O Fortuna.

Nope. When we start cutting a trailer, the soundtrack nor score have even been created yet. We are free to use any piece of music we like.
There are however many times that a cue in the trailer is later incorporated into the film's soundtrack. Also, if a perfect song is being created for the film's soundtrack, there are times that we are asked by the studio to try and incorporate it into the marketing. In other words, there is some overlap and collaboration, but we are not at all limited to what the film uses.

Just discovered 65daysofstatic. gonna kill in something, just gota wait for the right movie. anybody have other suggestions along those lines? don't know a lot about this genre of music.

God Is An Astronaut?

What he just said. They're a little less electronica-oriented than 65daysofstatic, but their songs are just as energetic and as far as I know they have a bigger discography to choose from.

From Monuments to Masses, maybe?

Dear person, I want your job, how do I get your job?
edit: try some tracks off the new mogwai album, they're fairly electronic, and if you cut them up to make them a bit shorter you could probably come up with something good. Also, having talked to 65dos, and seen some of the stuff that they do, they'd probably be glad to arrange some music for a trailer or something like that (obviously depending on how busy they are and how much you're paying them, and how much they like the movie idea :P)

An edited version of "How To Be a Werewolf" on the new Mogwai album was used in some kind of short film...pretty awesome too. I could see Mono's "Follow the Map" in an Anime film hahaha.
Honestly though, check out Sigur Ros' (), the ambient side of Rosetta's The Galilean Satellites and The Cleansing Undertones of Wake/Lift, and Lights Out Asia's In the Days of Jupiter.

Sigur Ros is a good one but they almost never let anyone ever use their music. They own all the rights to it themselves and only license it on really specific occasions

some very cool suggestions. somebodies idea lead me to Gifts from Enola . . . awesome!

These guys are also into doing soundtracks, scores, and stuff like that. They did stuff for a few documentaries, and are looking into scoring some films in the future where the music sets the mood, so to speak.

I remember when I was about 15 having a discussion with a friend about how the (obviously given the context early material of the) Finnish cello metal band Apocalyptica would be perfect for trailers etc. So here is my eight years past brains not necessarily on the ball offering.

yeah. if you're going to use some guitar-based instrumental rock you might as well pull something off this record and just kick your audience in the balls
