Title: House Music
Post by: Chad Warner on 16 Feb 2011, 16:07
Hey all,

So I've been hearing a lot about House Music and Dubstep lately. It's been gaining my interest more and more and I was hoping to start a thread for people to fill me in on what they are all about. Hoping to get some suggestions towards certain albums from various artists as well.

Thanks to anyone that can help.

Daft Punk is considered House music yea. I mean to be absolutely honest I don't know much about the genre. A classmate of mine is doing a documentary oh "House Heads" and I got pulled into it that way. I wanted to look into it and find out more and figured this would be a good resource.

Daft Punk and Ed Banger are the go-to sources of House music for people who are made uncomfortable with music that isn't rock. If you're a novice when it comes to electronic music they're a good place to start. They are also fun at parties, but tonally they are quite different from most House types.

For classic Chicago house, DJ International (http://tinyurl.com/4rvs59g) has a pretty good archive. Look up: Fast Eddie (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c6jFu245EuU).

For more current House music, Bpitch Control (http://tinyurl.com/4p4zsfq) has the market more or less cornered on notable tech house and microhouse. Look up: Ellen Allien (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PkmXfM0o09w), various Bpitch Control compilations.

In terms of House / Dubstep, the latter is becoming increasingly the former even without UK Funky and the various UK Garage permutations that orbit the scene. There are numerous House-centric labels - Numbers (http://tinyurl.com/4gehtlj), Ramp (http://tinyurl.com/4onacye), PTN (http://tinyurl.com/4ojzbqz), Ten Thousand Yen (http://tinyurl.com/4e5kyjp), etc. Look up: Breach (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJoQERWjgb8), Julio Bashmore (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jiEej8UXJlw), xxxy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tqAB8kAUrrM).

For deeper house, I tend towards Soma (http://tinyurl.com/4pjtxbx), mainly because of The Black Dog, who I've been a fan of for forever (and even though they're more Techno than House). Look up their compilations.

For Disco-oriented House, LCD Soundsystem gets all the attention but the rest of the DFA (http://tinyurl.com/4ebvp9q) catalog is reliably good lo-fi Disco and Acid House. Look up: Black Meteoric Star (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2XdOBRVSc0), James Murphy and the other guy's Fabriclive mix, the DFA comps.

There's also Rush Hour (http://tinyurl.com/4by3cg9), which is a legendary House-oriented record store and their label runs the gamut from newer House to remasters via their 100% excellent Voyage Direct series, to Anthony "Shake" Shakir reissues, on and on and on. Look up: Voyage Direct series (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1nYeQj2PVU).

If you look through the dozens of releases I put up in the M / F thread every week there are bound to be a few House ones.

There's probably more that I'm not remembering.

One thing: House music (and dance music in general) isn't as album-oriented as most other kinds of music. Chances are you'll find many more 12" singles than you will albums. There are some exceptions - Ellen Allien and Bpitch Control deal pretty heavy in full-length releases, for example - but especially with very "current" artists, most of their work is going to be disseminated via white labels, dubplates and vinyl singles, so as to better cater to the club scene. Thankfully most artists these days release simultaneous or slightly staggered (usually a week after vinyl release and several months after exclusive dubplate release) digital versions.

I've been really getting into Skrillex (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSeNSzJ2-Jw) lately. They are pretty tops.

Thanks to everyone who has posted so far. I've been listening to a few things that I managed to find and am working on locating some of the suggestions that you all made. KvP, thanks for the list of artists that you posted. I'm working on downloading some of them now. Tomorrow I should be able to give a good listen to all of the artists you mentioned and I'll let you know what I find myself getting in to. Scribbles is sending some Daft Punk my way, considering I've already heard a decent amount of their pieces through friends, I feel like it might be a good starting point, as you mentioned. I've also been listening to Justice, which, thus far, I've thoroughly enjoyed.

KvP is dead on here with the DFA catalogue but if you want to find something in there that is slightly more electro-house try Delia Gonzalez & Gavin Russom's EP - The Days of Mars of which the infamous Track 5 was finally released this year. Sticking with Gavin Russom his new Crystal Ark single The City Never Sleeps (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wpghTMuKGDA) is outstanding and of course he is Black Meteoric Star though that is more Acid House.

Shit Robot is another DFA artist who finally released his full length LP From The Cradle To The Rave at the end of last year and this contains the excellent tracks I Got A Feeling (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EuraPR4NhDw) and Take 'Em Up (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fyw0Ypg92Lk).

Outside of DFA there is Hannulelauri which I put up in (possibly the old) MF thread not too long ago, the Azari & III remix EP Reckless With Your Remixes and anything that Daniel Wang or Tensnake ever release.

I will add more when I find my record boxes although likely I won't be able to link them.
