Apparently this summer, MTV is bringing them back

Opened the thread thinking it was going to be about a sequel to this:

The lack of a proper sequel to this movie is mankind's greatest crime.

Bupkiss
-
I think they're back ended on the best note it could. A sequel would just have sullied it's good name.
-
I love Beavis and Butt-Head, and I have to say I am quite worried.
MTV seems to have the wrong idea about Beavis and Butt-Head. I feel like they're going to turn it into the two of them just sitting around and dissing on pop culture, based on the fact that they have stated that B and B will be watching more than just music videos.
-
Well what else could they do? Using the original B&B format would mean that MTV would have to actually SHOW MUSIC VIDEOS.
-
They'll just cut the music video segments to fit more commercials in. :|
Something tells me this revival will be much rockier than when they brought Futurama back.
-
Now all we need back is Daria
Maybe in Anime Format.
-
why
-
I love Daria and all but no one needs anymore of it.
-
No, guys, what I am saying is that they will probably have Beavis and Butt-Head JUST doing music videos and stuff. From reading about it, it says stuff like that they'll be watching contemporary music videos (Justin Bieber, etc.) as well as tv shows like Jersey Shore and stuff. I hope this isn't the case, but I am pretty terrified that it will be.
-
why
Why not.
-
Because literally nothing about Daria screams "ANIME!" Seriously though, why would that be a good idea aside from the fact that you would probably masturbate to it?
-
pfft like we couldn't to the original. Trent? tied for hottest cartoon ever.
-
A couple years into my time at college they started re-airing Daria on the N. It had been a few years since it stopped airing on MTV and I was a huge fan at the time. Once I started watching the repeats, though, I felt like it was really poorly paced. Or something. It didn't hold up at all, unfortunately.
Wasn't most of their bad video reviews, like, weird out there stuff most people hadn't heard of? I always thought that was the idea, at least, too...like, as they made fun of it, the viewer was just supposed to be like, "what the hell is this?"
Probably wouldn't work with a Bieber video or anything like it or just come off really contrived.
-
Because literally nothing about Daria screams "ANIME!"
Ahhh, but there is nothing that says that it couldn't be updated to an Anime - Perhaps a follow on series from the original or a 'Reboot'. After all, it they can bring back two morons with barely a braincell between 'em, why not the better series.

Just because you Can do something doesn't mean you Should
-
They should really bring back clone high.
-
I think Clone High's time has passed. While I agree that they SHOULD have made more than one season, I feel that it is too late now.

Please stop having opinions on things. I know there's no such thing as a wrong opinion and yet you're consistently wrong.

Yes. "updated to an anime" can you get any more ridiculous?

quite.

Yes. "updated to an anime" can you get any more ridiculous?
Only by being closed minded.
-
hahaha yeah that's definitely it
-
Man I like anime and that just sounds like a terrible idea.
-
I think they should update Degrassi to an anime as well.
Because everything needs to be updated to anime.
-
Yes. "updated to an anime" can you get any more ridiculous?
What if they took Twilight and redid it in the style of ANIME.

You guys seriously didn't know that? I mean, it is pretty obvious.
-
I read that in a bookshop once (I was bored and it annoyed the hell out of ben) and they didn't even condense it. At the end of the volume nothing really happened (surprise surprise), and they were just going to the meadow for the big sparkly reveal.
What's worse is that there is a graphic novel biography of SMeyer. I think it was one of those wacky animated-y ones. Pure disgusting shit.
-
I never watched Beavis and Butthead (before my time). I'm not sure how a new version of it (or Daria) would work. As I understand it, B+B was very much a product of its time. Daria definitely was. I enjoyed Daria, because I was old enough to remember the pop culture of that time, even if it was 10 years ago. But I don't see how it would work to make a new series.
Kugai, why would you think it's a good idea for it to be an anime? All you've said is "why not?" Give us a why.
-
Basically, Daria was one of the few Animated Series of that era that I really had an interest in. I got bored with The Simpsons after about the third season. After all, in the end The Simpsons was a 'One Trick Pony' of a cartoon, and after you've heard Homer go "Doh!" for the umpteenth time, it gets real old real fast.
I guess I have a soft spot for Daria because of it. I never really was a fan of Bevis and Butthead, but Daria was a different kettle of fish.
Daria is, I think a workable option moved to an Anime Format and perhaps, if it came to it, updated to today. Very few Animated Series from that era could be brought into our present era, and the two morons are, in my opinion, unworkable in todays era. After all, haven't we got enough cartoon/animated/LIVING morons on TV at the moment?? :-D
This is just my personal opinion, I know there will be some out there who won't and don't share it, but as far as I'm concerned, of the two I'd rather see the cynic and her friends back than those two morons.
Why Anime Format? Why not??! Admittedly it's not everyones cup of tea, but if you are going to bring it back in style, why not go the whole hog and update it to Anime Style? Hell, if you're going to update the PPG or Kim Possible into that style, why not bring back another of the best in that style.
-
Why Anime Format? Why not??!
That's not a valid reason for making it into an anime. What could changing the format into anime-style bring to the show to improve it, compared to just restarting it in the original style or changing it to make it a live action show?
-
Didn't the Brits try a Live Action Daria ?
-
I think we should update Princess Mononoke into a western animation style like king of the hill.
-
Shows, movies whatever can have a visual style that is pretty much a strong part of its identity. Imagine if Pushing Daises looked like Bones, that's what "updating" Daria to an anime would be like. Daria was a show about 90's American alternative culture, the series visual style reflected this and has aged well (if at all). In order to make the show work as an anime you'd have to overhaul it from the ground up. Daria is what it is, you can't change it that way and still have the same or a similar show.
-
It seems that Kugai has honestly come to believe that anime is the highest form of entertainment, for some reason or another. I don't believe there is any actual logic toward this bias other than an intensely troublesome obsession with anime.
-
you would probably masturbate to it

Would watch this

With two conditions:
a) The guy who voiced Hank voices the main guy (whose name escapes me for the moment)
II) Keep the badassed soundtrack.

No, I knowdamn well that some cartoons etc would be damned cringeworthy as Anime. It's just that I personally believe that Daria would work as an Anime/Anime Style cartoon if it were to be updated.
-
Fantastic. Now explain to the rest of us your reasoning for thinking so without using the words "Why not" because that's not a reason at all
-
Yeah, seriously, how exactly would it work?
You're taking something that has it's own unique and interesting flavor and then changing half of it. The style it was drawn in originally had a lot of personality and charm and if they decided to bring it back they could it improve it by giving it a face-lift or exaggerating the style.
Changing the art-style would also change the feel of the show. Change can be really good but you really think anime is what's best? Why do you think anime is a better fit than cartoon? Do you believe that anime is "better" than the cartoon style?

It seems like you've never watched Daria or you completely missed the point...

OK, lets be clear about something here, I expressed my personal opinion.
And as the man once said "Opinions are like assholes - everybody has one."
Now, I'm not saying it's right or it's wrong, it's just an opinion based on what I currently believe and, yes, it's based on what some here perceive as a bias towards Anime/Anime Style cartoons/animation. Maybe I do have a bias towards that, maybe I'm just being naive *shrugs*. I'm the first to admit that I could be wrong but I
will say one thing - my opinion is just as valid as the one you hold.
You have a different opinion? fine! you're welcome to it. It's your opinion and though I may not agree with it, I will gladly accept that you have the right to hold your
opinion about the matter just as I have the valid right to hold mine. I may be right, I may be wrong just as you may be right or you may be wrong/ What I
will not do is be drawn into a useless and circular debate about whether I am right or wrong just because there are those who believe otherwise.
If I'm wrong, I'm wrong (and visa versa.)
Really, life's too damned short to be drawn into such debates.
As to tender's question, if I were to think of a change in art style for Daria, (and this is off the top of my head) I might consider something like this
(http://i351.photobucket.com/albums/q461/XxMeli_J_NightlyxX/Daria/excuse_me_by_kajiq.jpg)
As for the rest of it, I respect your right to hold your opinion, just as I would expect you to respect my right to hold mine.
-
For some reason, that looks like harry potter fan art. I can't figure out why. I'm just expecting to see a scar under her hair. Maybe the glasses?
Daria was a very American cartoon. You seem to be of the impression that anime is the wave of the future. It isn't. It's been around since before I was alive, it was around well before Daria was around. There's no good reason to change it, and there is at least one reason not to. Most new cartoons are drawn in an anime-esque style to appeal more to the target audience. Daria shouldn't be, to appeal to the jaded, cynical audience that hates feeling marketed to.
And yes, opinions are like assholes. Everyone has one. And if you aren't going to take the time and effort to make sure yours doesn't stink, don't wave it around in peoples' faces.
-
Kugai, we aren't bashing your opinion. We are just having trouble wrapping our heads around the concept. To us, there is no reason that Daria could work if it were to have art, writing, humor or anything else similar to anime (or anything different from the established Daria formula, for that matter). We are all just curious as to why you think it would be a good idea.
-
And as the man once said "Opinions are like assholes - everybody has one."
And there's something wrong with yours.
-
And as the man once said "Opinions are like assholes - everybody has one."
Yours needs some serious examination.
-

Yours is all fucked up.

I hate that quote.
I hate your opinions also but that is by the by at this point.
-

Opinions are like assholes, Scott. Yours is wrong.
-
->Kugai
With the exception of a few people I don't think that anyone is attacking your right to have an opinion. The opinion you have on the subject is completely different to the one that many people hold and I would love to hear your reasoning for why your opinion is the way that it is.
Whenever you change the art-style you also change the tone and that's why I would shy away from it. And now I would love to hear why you believe it would work better as an anime. And if you do, as you say, have a bias towards anime then you're in a very good position to defend your opinion because you should be familiar with the benefits that come with that medium.
Also, to me that fan art doesn't look like anime....but then again I have a hard time figuring out its style at all.
-
a) The guy who voiced Hank voices the main guy (whose name escapes me for the moment)
That would be Mike Judge, also the voices of Beavis and Butthead, since he created them, and King of the Hill.
-
Finally, someone gets it.
-
Ikrik, I'm not even sure I can explain my bias without sounding infantile and childish - it just is what it is (my bias to the style that is).
Probably not the explanation that you or others are looking for, and probably about as clear as a double espresso coffee, but there it is.
I'm the first to admit that my bias may sound infantile, and I am capable of recognising that. Hell, if you were to come at me with an update of Daria or any other 'toon in a style that wasn't Anime or Anime Style and it had good story and artwork and made me watch and enjoy the way the original did, I'd probably be one of the first to jump on the bandwagon in praising the show.
-
What the hell is Anime Style (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Modernanime.jpg)?
-
Sorry Cire27, shoulda been a bit more clearer on what I meant. I was talking about Art Style in that case which, as you know, is somewhat different than the standard 2D Cell Style animation that was used when Daria and Bevis and Butthead came out.
-
Yeah, I don't like using the phrase that way either since it's really imprecise even if I sorta understand what people mean by it. It has the unfortunate side effect of lumping most productions together with the house styles and character designs of the bigger studios like Gainax or Madhouse.
And "anime" as in "Japanese produced" would probably be pretty awkward for a show like Daria given its obsession with American stereotypes and our ambivalent-to-adversarial attitude towards school and authority figures in general. Remember, we're talking about a show that featured baby boomer hippie-turned-professionals, the cheerleader-QB combo platter, the Gen X slacker, a Mr. Sensitive New Age Guy, and a history teacher that was basically the jealous dude from Blood Simple. The show was hells of American and used a low-key animation style to offset the histrionic voice acting. I just don't really see how there's much room for crossover there unless you just decided to make it into something entirely different. Which rather defeats the purpose, doesn't it?

Alex C pretty much hits it on the nail.
