Title: Minecraft + Metroid + Zelda = Terraria!
Post by: smack that isaiah on 15 May 2011, 19:36
So this game was brought up for a few posts in the Minecraft thread, and I think this game looks amazing and deserves its own thread.

There's multiplayer (with optional PvP) and single player and NPCs and bosses and events and a whole bunch of stuff.  Each world is randomly generated and the player has complete control as to how he or she wishes to play the game.  At its core it's kind of like a 2D Minecraft mixed with Metroid and Zelda.

It will officially be released tomorrow (May 16) on Steam for $9.99.

Trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGo7iMUcxLc&feature=player_embedded)

The developers of the game playing and demoing the alpha version (http://www.youtube.com/user/demilogic#p/c/4129CC1F5130E0C9/0/Udp5ozoYfxM)

So, thoughts on the game anyone?  I know I'll be buying it as soon as I'm done with my presentation (and work) tomorrow.

I've been checking Steam every couple of hours since yesterday in the hope it'd go up for me to purchase and download if not play, but alas, nothing so far.

Been following this for a few weeks - after the Yogscast did their first video of it - and I'm really excited to try it out.

It's been getting a lot of comparisons to Minecraft, somewhat understandably, but it looks really interesting, certainly looks like there should be more to it to keep me occupied than in Minecraft itself, which tends to get a little stale after a few days of playing.

There's an official trailer now (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7uOhFTrrq0&feature=channel_video_title) (The old one was of the alpha version).

And, it says it'll be up at 10:00 AM PST, about 4 or 5 hours from now.

I am so excited.  I'm gonna finish my presentation then hurry home and buy it.

Yeah, I've been looking forward to this for a little while. I had no idea it was coming out so soon though.

Not sure if I want to spend $10 on it though......but I probably will anyway.

well, I bought it last night and it's pretty fantastic.

look out for time dilation though because you will feel like you've only been playing for half an hour when in reality it's been several hours.

built a couple houses, got a nurse to move in (no merchant yet :(), and found some pretty deep caves.

still barely scratched the surface (pun intended)

I bought it, but the game won't launch for me :( instead it keeps trying to install xna 4 when i double click it.  There seems to be some trouble on my comp with the .net framework 4 and/or the xna 4 redistributable.  the second fails with error code 2908 when I try to install it separately from the game (per the developer's suggestion (http://www.terraria.org/issues.html)).  I found on the Steam forums someone else with the same issue (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?p=22468151#post22468151), but no one's helped him out.

I've been going crazy uninstalling and reinstalling and tweaking things slightly.
I've found this site (http://www.go4answers.com/Example/solved-64bit-prereq-install-fails-4895.aspx) saying that .net framework 4 may install improperly and gives steps to try and fix it, but it feels a tad too in depth for my tastes with messing around with windows.

Anyone have any ideas?  I'm not used to messing with Windows.

Just wanna say that my problems have been fixed, thanks to a bit of help from Mr. PWHodges.  The game is so much fun.  I can't wait till I finish studying so I can play it more tonight.

(Also, my roommate and another friend bought it and we're gonna do some 3 person multiplayer later tonight.)

built a couple houses, got a nurse to move in (no merchant yet :(), and found some pretty deep caves.

I think the requirement is 50 silver for a merchant.  Maybe you've not reached that yet?  Or, there could be something wrong with some of your houses.  I saw a let's play from a beta tester of the game where he used a wood platform for a floor of a house and it seemed to be un-live-in-able (no one moved in until he replaced the floor with wood).

No, I had the money, he just wasn't showing up for some reason.

I walked to the right for like a day and he showed up though, so it's all good. How are the throwing stars? I've been shooting flaming arrows out of a silver bow and it's pretty powerful and relatively cheap and easy to do, but throwing stars are just plain cool. Seemed a little pricey though. Do you lose them when you throw them or are they like arrows where you can usually pick them back up (but not always)?

I love this game. I seriously haven't even seen any of the cool stuff that people have been talking about either, but I've been having a blast. I haven't found any of this so-called corruption, i haven't found any skeletons, no boss monsters, no demon altars, no treasure chests; none of that.
Title: Re: Minecraft + Metroid + Zelda = Terraria!
Post by: smack that isaiah on 18 May 2011, 10:12
You can recover shuriken most of the time, and I think their benefit over arrows is that they go through monsters (again, I think.  There are definitely some projectiles that go through enemies, and I think shuriken are one of them).  You don't have to buy them from the merchant, though.  You can also find them in pots.  I don't know about the ratio of damage between arrows and shuriken, though.  I believe they have one base damage value, while arrows can increase depending on bow.

Demon altars are only in corruption (which you may have to walk a long way to get to, but there is some on every map), skeletons and treasure chests are only deep underground (which may get really really deep depending on the size of your world [my roommate did a medium world and it took him over half an hour of digging to get down to skeletons and chests]), and all bosses except for one have to be summoned with a special item (or occur randomly with a very small chance of happening).

It is sort of like Minecraft in that you kind of have to read the wiki (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Terraria_Wiki) or watch let's play (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3K8PMG42l3M&feature=channel_video_title)s in order to discover some things (like how to summon a boss).

Yeah, I'm on a medium world so I kinda figured that was the case. I finally got deep enough for the dirt wall background to change last night. Had like four slimes land on top of me and kill me in seconds as soon as I got there though.

I've got lots of caves to explore near my little town so I'm gonna keep doing that a while, just so I can save up enough for the miner helmet with the light on it.

Then i'm digging straight down

So I bought this and I'm about to make a test run. Any tips?

make sure you have a clock nearby because you could easily spend hours playing this game without even realizing it

that's the #1 thing i can think of

(oh yeah, and don't bother making a copper helmet, you can make a set of goggles out of only two lenses [dropped from flying eyeballs] and they have the same amount of defense, so save the copper for something more important)

Oh man, this game is awesome.  I just played for a number of hours and enjoyed every minute.  I hopped on and off multiplayer with my roommate and another friend (it's so easy to host a multiplayer map really quickly with hamachi).  We fought Eye of Cthulhu twice, and Devourer of Worlds once.  I've yet to fight any boss on my single player.

So I bought this and I'm about to make a test run. Any tips?
The only thing I can think of is to keep your hot bar relatively constant and remember the shortcut keys (their numbers) to them.  I have to jump from sword to food to grappling hook fairly quickly sometimes, and I can't trust the scroll wheel to be fast and accurate.
Title: Re: Minecraft + Metroid + Zelda = Terraria!
Post by: Scandanavian War Machine on 18 May 2011, 22:44
my scroll wheel doesn't even scroll through my hotbar, unfortunately :(

it works on the crafting screen but i have to scroll it like ten clicks before it moves one on the screen.  :psyduck:

Post by: Scandanavian War Machine on 19 May 2011, 15:42
Had my first run-in with the Eye of Cthulhu today. It didn't go well. I didn't even summon him.

I was spelunking deep underground and I had finally found a hook so could grapple around (badass), and a cloud in jar so I could double jump (also badass), and about a million hours later and much much deeper, my inventory was full of things I could no longer discard for better things, so I went home using the handy Mirror I had also recently found.

I forgot about that ominous "a dark force is watching you" message I had gotten while underground, so I appear on the second story of my house, at my bed, and immediately start getting bombarded by eyeballs both large and small. I couldn't simultaneously open doors and shoot arrows and drink potions fast enough to survive, so I died.

So hyped on all my sweet new gear though. Not to mention the many stacks of ores and gems I got. When I get home from work, World 1 is gonna be my bitch.

i fought and beat devourer of worlds in single player.  I lost against cthulhu twice...

in multi with 2 others we failed against skeletron 3 times.  hopefully by saturday we'll be better equipped and ready, tho.
when we were about to give up and call it a day, blood moon.  followed by goblin invasion!  oh, so so so so much fun.

we also all got light sabers.  I'm red, james is purple, and my roommate is yellow.  (important note, the phaseblade/light saber is the only item which requires gems to craft, so don't sell all your gems!  it takes 10 gems of any one type to determine color, and then 15 meteorite)

I love this game.

Post by: Scandanavian War Machine on 19 May 2011, 22:59
I just sold off a huge haul of gems  :-P

It was worth it though, I was finally able to buy the miner helmet and bunch of shurikens, so i'm much better prepared for battle now. if only my fingers weren't so clumsy....

btw i had one of the most epic fights i've ever had in any game earlier today. i walked left for about a day in search of corruption and other new things; i eventually found a giant hole going straight down for...i don't know...a really long time. i'll have to time it, but it would be probably over ten seconds of freefall. of course, i wasn't free falling the whole way...i fell into the pit on accident when i got swarmed by a bunch of the corrupted eye-things and a giant snake-worm. was basically falling straight down firing arrows and healing madly, occasionally using my double jump to stop myself from splatting on the rare tiny ledge i could land on. i fell all the way to bottom (which was filled with water by the way), fighting the whole way. i didn't survive.

it was fucking amazing

Had him down to a couple hundred HP and the sun rises. DEATH!

Post by: smack that isaiah on 22 May 2011, 10:22
I've not yet solo'd eye of cthulhu.  Altho, I've only tried once and it was a few days ago.  I bet I could do it now, though.

Roommate and I killed Skeletron yesterday and ran through the dungeon looting as much as possible.  I guess I'm making sort of a mage-like char now since I have full mana and mana regeneration effects (armor and accessory) and a ton of magic stuff (fire flower, water bolt, aqua sceptor, space gun, etc).

Also, I found the underground jungle yesterday.  The monsters there are crazy tough.

Still no floating islands :(

This game is freaking awesome.  Unfortunately, I have finals over the next few days and really need to study now.

I'm thinking after Wed maybe seeing if my comp can handle hosting a multiplayer map for a few hours some night.  I can't keep it running continuously like ackblom with Minecraft, but I could put it up for a few hours while I'm playing over the weekend for ppl to pop on and off.  Anyone interested?  You gotta go through Hamachi.  It's not that complicated, but it took my roommate a while to figure it all out before he could explain it to me.

just solo'd Eye of Cthulhu for the first time, after getting killed by it many many times before. then, while waiting for the dryad to show up, i went off in search of a dark orb to smash so i could try for another meteor, since my first one landed on a chasm and yielded very little ore. turns out it's my third one so eater of worlds or whatever that giant worm is called shows up while i'm at the bottom of this chasm, so i decide to stay down here where there are no other monsters and, sure enough, my Ball 'O Hurt and half a stack of Healing Potions were enough to finish him off. I'm actually surprised I beat him on my first enouncter, but that Ball 'O Hurt thing is pretty badass.

got some sweet armor now and a better pick, and the dryad is here. yay.

oddly enough, the thing that made all the difference in the EoC fight (which I had been struggling with) was all the Spikey Balls I got from my first goblin invasion. those things wreck his little eye minions. especially if you're battling on a wooden platform like i was; those things fall right past it so they can hurt him and his stupid friends when they're below you.

now to decide what weapon to make next, now that i actually have some new decent ore

Post by: Scandanavian War Machine on 26 May 2011, 00:47
man, i had some good luck with this game tonight. I managed to finally beat Skeletron after finding a Starfury on a floating island, which was awesome because that lead to me finding: Rocket Boots, Red Balloon, Muramasa, Blue Moon, Aqua Scepter, and the rest of the gold I needed to buy the Minishark. Probably some other stuff I forgot too.

Now I just have to tediously mine hellstone for a while to get all the gear, and then hopefully find the jungle again and clear that out. I found it once, died, and I haven't been able to find it again since.

We should def get some multiplayer going in this bitch. I guess I have somehow gotten the attention of the Eye of Cthulhu without breaking a shadow orb or anything (people have started moving into my village though) and he has appeared two nights in a row, the first night I didn't have my shurikens out, so I died trying to get them out. The second night I didn't hit my potion fast enough. But tonight, he is going to appear again, and I am holding onto 800 shurikens atop my Eye of Cthulhu fighting platform. He's gonna die and a dryad is gonna get all up in my bizness.

I'm planning on seeing if my computer can handle hosting a multiplayer map for a few hours tonight at 8:00 (eastern).  I'll post in this thread when I have it running with the IP and pass (actually I may just PM everyone in this thread).  If I can run it without major issues I'll try putting it up again tomorrow.

I've got some pretty bitchin gear now.  I was able to solo eye of cthulhu in under 3 min without shuriken.  And the star cannon can totally own bone serpents (altho it uses up stars mighty quickly).  I think I'm ready to take on skeletron.

Actually Isaiah, Jace and I just did a quick test run to make sure we could get a connection working.  With how much less resource intensive this is compared to Minecraft, If you like I can just toss it up alongside my minecraft server as a near 24/7 server.

No problem, you can do that if you like.

I'm still gonna try putting up multiplayer on my laptop in a few minutes (I lost track of time, it's almost 9:00 here).  I'll put up info here if anyone's interested.

edit: ok, trying this out:
IP: 5.242.205.36
pw: qc

hop on if you like.  Thing is, I kind of have a fairly bad comp, and if things get too slow or shitty, I'll stop running the map.

Ok, Now that I am home and sober, I started a server. Everyone should start a new character for the server, but otherwise it's all good. I'll PM everyone in the thread with the info and let me know if you didn't get one.

Ok, now that there is a console window for servers, the server should be up and running a lot more regularly. If you haven't gotten the info let me know, but it should be running pretty constantly now.

Oh god, guys, this game, I just played it for twelve hours straight. I was planning on sleeping at some point but it just didn't happen.
And, I've just figured out that you lose a whole bunch of shit that you were carrying when you die. NOW I understand why it was taking me so long to save up for stuff.
Title: Re: Minecraft + Metroid + Zelda = Terraria!

I was under the impression that you only lost coins when you died. I've never lost anything other than that upon dying.
Title: Re: Minecraft + Metroid + Zelda = Terraria!
Post by: schimmy on 08 Jun 2011, 04:36
I'm not sure. I've definitely noticed coins going, and I feel like I'm coming back with less ore than I should be.
Title: Re: Minecraft + Metroid + Zelda = Terraria!
Post by: Jace on 08 Jun 2011, 04:38
Yeah, you lose half of your coins (I looked it up on the terraria wiki) of each coin type. So if you have 2 gold, 4 silver and 50 copper you lose 1 gold, 2 silver, 25 copper.
