I saw the finale despite not really following the show at all. I have no context.

I'm honestly surprised this pulls in 14 mil US viewers an episode.

I'm honestly surprised this pulls in 14 mil US viewers an episode.

I think its because of the way Simon Baker plays the role during the murderer-of-the-week episodes, little manic, arrogant, crazy, goes off on a completely different tangent to everyone else in the middle of an interview. It's interesting to watch. Theres also the dichotomy of the character that comes into it when Red John is involved, as Jane has said several times that if given the chance, he would kill Red John, no hesitation.

Also because Simon Baker's so dishy, don't forget how dishy he is.

This show is why I feel vaguely guilty about ragging on Castle so much because god knows the asspulls required to wrap things up every episode are at least as egregious. I have no idea if Simon Baker is a better actor in general but in this case his character is a bigger douchebag than Fillion's and so I like his show better. I think it comes down to those warm, humanizing moments when Castle rebounds from something by talking to his daughter or mother. God, is that boring.

And hey, its more awesome when Jane outs the conman by the condition of his shoes. Castle is just like "Yeah, its Nathan Fillon but meh"
