Title: Torchwood - Miracle Day
Post by: Tom on 09 Jul 2011, 14:25
Anyone else watch this last night?

I've seen it! It looks pretty darn great, actually!

Although certain scenes (you know which ones I'm talking about) were pretty damn horrific. Like, seriously.
It's as if Russel T. Davies forgot how much he enjoyed writing sci-fi and just decided to go all-out.

I saw this last night, which was when the series started in the UK - did other countries really get it first? That's pretty shitty, since it's a BBC programme. I know it's been co-opted by an American cable company but still.

Anyway, I love Torchwood and it was a good episode but it's not really the same. Not necessarily any worse, but very definitely a different show to the old Torchwood I knew and loved. All the stupid explosions and mysterious figures with enormous guns, and the ridiculous ten minute trailer at the end (you guys might not have had that, but here in the UK they showed clips from what must have been the entire series. I almost feel there's no point watching after all that) and the very American feel to it. I'm not sure exactly what it is that feels American to me. I think it's a scale thing. Torchwood Wales was on a smaller scale in the sense that there wasn't this need to have DRAMARAMA all the time with fire and stuff. That's what I really love about Doctor Who and the related series. This new series feels a lot more CSI - which I also enjoy, so I'll be watching.

Maybe the fact that it's set in America, with a mainly American cast? ;)

I really enjoyed it, despite never having watched Torchwood before. I agree it's started more like an action-film than sci-fi, but I think that will come later. That damned trailer/spoiler was a bit annoying, though. I guess I could have switched off the moment it started, but at the same time, innate curiousity wouldn't let me.

But what is it that makes it American? I mean, John Barrowman was just as American in Miracle Day as he ever was in the old series, but that didn't stop the series feeling British. There is some intangible difference that isn't to do with location or accent.

would it make you feel better if he mispronounced 'estrogen' a few more times?

anyway, the americanitis probably comes partly from the bigger focus on action & guns, partly from what looks like a somewhat bigger budget, and partly from the fact that almost all of the major characters are american. there were also a few things that seem to have been thrown in specifically for the american audience (explaining the distinction between england & wales for example) which you probably don't usually see in a british show.

as i understand it, the bbc is trying to appeal more to the export market right now.

To be fair, this is a co-production between the BBC and an American cable channel, Starz.

I think a big thing that I found hilariously indicative of the fact that it's being made with an American audience in mind is the captions saying "Wales, UK" each time. Just in case anyone thought that Wales might be a small town in Nebraska or somewhere. Oh wait, I just googled it and found that there actually is a Wales in Pennsylvania.

Sigh.

Any theories on exactly why death has died?

I couldn't get through the first episode. I'm usually pleased with Starz, too.

I dropped after last weeks episode because of the ongoing Oswald Danes thing and Vera's

. I may finish watching this if the back half turns out to be really good.

I'm really disappointed with this series. I think it's lost sight of what used to be great about Torchwood - its believability, and the way that it took things that were really happening and pushed them just a little. I can't believe in the plotline of this, particularly what Tom mentioned regarding Vera, it's ridiculous.

Esther is kind of cute and bubbly, I have no problems with this. Her presence frees every one else up to do things. Rex is butts.

So the viewers sat through the death camps and the saga of Vera's investigation and Oswald Danes' infuriating diction, only to have what appears to be 90% of the backstory revealed in the seventh episode.

THIS IS NOT HOW SUSPENSE WORKS, RUSSELL T. DAVIES.

Ooh can you tell me that backstory? I gave up watching it three weeks ago but I'm still mildly curious as to what happened.

I absolutely love Torchwood, but Miracle Day was balls.

The "twist" right at the end was double balls.

In the bad way.

Well, it was less balls than

(click to show/hide)

but I'm with you -- it was in the bad way.  Haphazardly plotted and paced, plus the wrong people died.  And by wrong, I mean "most ripe for character development."  Hmm.  Actually, I take it back.  There were some who died who I don't mind staying that way.  Ah well, them's the breaks.

After seeing the end, I'd call that pretty much all bad, other than the enjoyably terrible shouting monologue that Danes got near the end.

I liked how Danes was absolutely the worst thing

every decision they made regarding him was the absolute wrong one

I thought it was great the way the writers made you absolutely hate Esther with a passion because she was so useless.

Wait, that was deliberate, right?

i never got to the end, think I gave up after the lady doctor got bumped off, but they did seem to make absolutely every character unlikable. Which is quite an achievement in a scripted television show that focuses on the 'good guys'

The lady doctor was about the only halfway likeable character in the series, IMHO.
