Title: WCDT: 18-22 July 2011 (1971-1975)
Post by: Method of Madness on 17 Jul 2011, 00:12
So, it's all guest week, so no actual story progression, so is there any need to have a WCDT? :?

Meh, might as well.

The weekly thread always happens; there will still be five strips to comment on, after all.

I guess.  It'll probably be more speculation on next week than discussion of this week, but such is the forum, I suppose.

I am torn between the first two vote options. Both write fantastic comics of their own, and I would love to see both of their takes on QC, but in the end I had to go with Randall. Specifically I'd like to see a comic with Raven and the man with the hat. That seems like it could have endless comic possibilities.

I guess there's not as much cross-pollination between here and Penny Arcade as I thought.

I guess I mostly want to see what Mike/Gabe's art would look like for the QC format.
Also, imagine the shitstorm if Mike drew a background character with a dickwolves shirt.

It would be easier if this poll allowed more than one vote; I would have added Gabe as well.

Can we request one from Phil and Kaja Foglio?

The obvious stars of that strip should be Marigold and Faye....

Post by: DSL on 17 Jul 2011, 08:18
Oh, man, the Foglios. Don't know if we could request one, but just thinking about the manic lushness of their art and writing (and Cheyenne's colors) applied to the QCverse has my head spinning. Betcha they'd set their contribution aboard Hannerdad's space station (named Castle Ellicott). The reappearance of espressosaurus would be the least weird thing that happens. Pintsize as a Jagermonster ...

Of the listed ones Randall Munroe was an easy pick for me, as I don't know the other two. Danielle Corsetto would be fine, too, but I would say likely (may be more than a bit obvious?) rather than unlikely. Any chance of Don Lee doing one? I realize that (political) cartoon is a different form of art, but his comments here are more or less guaranteed to make me LOL...

Danielle already tweeted that she was doing a guest strip (though she didn't say for which comic, of course).

But I chose Bill Amend anyway, because Randall got him to do a guest strip for xkcd a while ago, so maybe he could do the same here.

Yes, but if the reason he wants a muffin with an egg in it is to pretend he doesn't eat eggs, wouldn't getting a muffin be suspicious?

The rest of the jokes make sense!  Pintsize putting a camera in the bathroom is just him being himself, and/or Chuck Berry.

If he's talking about an egg muffin, I assume he means an English muffin; and no, I don't think they have eggs in them, they're yeasted.

I confess it took me a couple of seconds to twig to what was going on in the last strip.

Kind of the point of the conversation is that no, he's not asking for an English muffin as one might expect, but rather an actual muffin with an egg hidden in it.

[Jeph]: "Sketch-card for SDCC. Maripowergirl, Superhanners, Catdora, and Batpintsize."

1. Power Girl Marigold is awesome.

2. Catwoman Dora is so very, very appropriate.

3. Bat...mite(?) Pintsize?

4. While I 'get' that Supergirl Hanners is appropriate, as being "from space" as kryptonians are, I think Harley Quinn Hannelore might have been better, because "Hanners Quinn" is just so crazy...

5. What would the rest of the QC cast be...?

On 3: I put forward "Batsize"... and HannerQuinn.

As for the rest of the cast... sadly I'm not very good with comic book superheroes... I can't help but drift into cosplay ideas that aren't from comic books at all.

I keep coming back to the idea of Steve as He-man. :P
And Marten could probably pull off a fairly good mild-mannered Clark Kent...
Hmm...

... Clinton as the T-1000.

5. I vote for Steve as Gambit, Faye as Poison Ivy appeals to me (edit: on second thought Penelope might be better...), and Sven as Mr. Freeze. It's kind of hard coming up with superheros/villains for them :/

5. What would the rest of the QC cast be...?

Keeping it in the DC side of comics, my choices would be, just based on looks and not in personality (so, more a cosplay or a fan-art thing than a proper fan-fiction):

Marten: Riddler
Faye: Darkseid (ok, this is more about personality than just appearance... but Darkseid wears hotpants, so...)
Tai: Robin
Raven: Zatanna
Angus, Sven, Steve... not sure about these...

Man, yeah. I was thinking of Sven as Mr. Freeze too, the animated-series one. Slim and tall. Then I started thinking of Arnold Schwarzennegger and all went to hell.

I thought he meant something more mundane when he said "No, not an egg mcmuffin" - that he specifically wanted a boiled egg, not a fried egg.

I realise that doesn't really make sense, but neither does hiding an egg inside a product that already contains egg. :-P

Warning - while you were typing an entire new species has evolved. You may wish to review your post.

So, now we have three Butts Disease victims: Jeph, Dave Willis and now Hanners. Then again, it IS Faye's butt, so Hanners' reaction is completely understandable.

Although, random geographical question: Is Everest still the tallest mountain in the world? Or did it swap places again with K2 like it does every so often?

1. It would have to be Faye as X-Men's Rogue since she has the rack and southern for it.  ("rouge" Rogue?  get it...?   ...  ...  *crickets & tumbleweed* ... *lowers head and slinks off-stage*)

2. Marten as Martian Manhunter, being such an under-rated but steady & staple character of the DCUniverse.

3. Penelope, besides being Pizza Girl, would probably make a better Supergirl than Hannelore.  (Harley / "Hanners" Quinn for her, as I remarked earlier)

4. Raven would have to be Starfire, the nice girl from outer space with an awesome rack.

I feel like there's a perverted joke or pun involving pintsize as a supervillain, but I lack the necessary comic book nerdom. All I turn up in my file for perverted comic files is spiderman spiderweb euphoria fluid.

Best I've got would be that Pintsize would try to reconfigure his chassis, there would be an accident, and he would become an open-source reality-altering supervillain named Mxyzpt410x-lk.
No one would know the difference.

Also, Cosette as Squirrel Girl.
Hanners as the latest incarnation of Terra, because she can make dirt her bitch.

EDIT: Aaaaaaand never mind. Dave Kellett shows us Hanners in her element.

That's funny - I did too, until I read your comment. And went back to the comic. Even then, it's only really the earring that gave it away.

Still, I've often thought they look kinda similar to each other.

HannerDad has his ways of getting up there himself, right?

I imagine him to be something of a cross between Richard Branson, Bill Gates and T. Boone Pickett, with a bit of Mad Scientist thrown in.

He probably has his own version of SpaceShipOne that he developed as an easier way of getting up and down from his station - which I would have to believe is probably lower in Earth orbit than the ISS.

By the expression on Marigold's face, I'd say it's not going well for her.   :-)

I guess  this removes my right to complain about people copying the warning message in the future, though.

Anyway, is the the first shot where we've been able to see the whole of COD in one shot? For some reason I thought it was wider. Also, that door is to the bathroom since people have exited/entered it directly from the main shop, so where is the door to the basement? In the bathroom?

I instantly root for Dale in this scene, if only because he's using a mug while Marigold has a disposable cup. Though I recall some calculations somewhere of the recourse use of a mug versus that of a disposable cup that was dis favorable to the mug. Eh, I prefer Alliance anyway. They have night elf mohawks.

I think I'm rambling, must sleep.

Yes but how will he get back up?   Now that the current american government administration has effectively killed NASA...? :-(
As a resident of Southern California living 40 miles from JPL (and a regular attendee of their annual open house), I have a strong desire for our computer monitor to transmit the matter of my hands. NASA is not manned spaceflight. NASA is not even mostly manned spaceflight. It is only a portion of the many many things they do, including that aerospace bit (read: better aircraft); in the case of JPL, all our robotic missions.

And frankly, I agree with the decision. The manned program shot itself in the foot when it started and canceled three viable replacements for the shuttle for 15 years and then wasted 4 years on the completely unimaginative constellation program (in the details, not the mission statement). It's also been lackluster about cutting the cost per pound and inhibited the growth of commercial spaceflight with an overly paternal attitude. It was a bit doomed from the start with the wildly underestimated cost of turnaround, spiraling complexity, and vast reductions in scope that radically altered what would have been more favorable economy of scale (15 orbiters would have been much cheaper per shuttle per flight before it got scaled back to 4).

We need people up there, performing experiments, no question. But the shuttle just wasn't very good at that. We need to get cargo into space. The shuttle was okay at that. And most of all, we need to get more that 240 miles away from this rock. The shuttle couldn't do that period. We had a 7 year delay between Apollo and the shuttle, remember, and I'm pretty sure NASA did some stuff during that time.

He probably has his own version of SpaceShipOne that he developed as an easier way of getting up and down from his station - which I would have to believe is probably lower in Earth orbit than the ISS.
The lower the orbit the more debris to contend with, though. I'll bet it's at a Lagrange point, and he uses a red Gundam to get to it.

Isn't the toilet meant to be a partitioned-off inset corner rather than a separate room?
Not in any cafe that I know of. People kinda like nice solid walls between crapcans and places with food. And the door is set into a wall every time we've seen it, anyway.

The problem it seems was that I had just woken up; I feel more coherent now.

Hanners appears to be taking dictation from the dolphin. Well, why not? We know she speaks GOO and Morse Code. Possibly there were dolphins on the space-station where she grew up.

Yes but how will he get back up?   Now that the current american government administration has effectively killed NASA...? :-(
Even if the US government had killed NASA (which they haven't) there are other options. The Russians for a start, but somehow I imagine Hanners' father having his own launch facility using something way cooler than thirty-plus-year-old technology. The Space Shuttle made its first orbital flight before I was born! Before the first IBM PC was launched! Before the ancestors of the internet were anything more than scientists' toys, and well before the World Wide Web! Before the USA's first commercial cellular phone network was rolled out! Think about that for a moment. It's a tribute to the design, but also to bureaucratic stagnation.

Interesting to see an overhead shot. It's obviously not 100% accurate, with things like the lack of the big blackboard, and not being as wide (or is that deep?) as the comics implied. But interesting. I always thought the bathroom door was on the opposite side of the room. Not sure if that's my mistake or the guest artist's. Perhaps we're both right, and that's actually the basement door. My understanding of the layout was always a bit sketchy, as Jeph does not normally treat us to this kind of angle.

Also, I get the feeling that Dora has the sword ready to leap in if Dale and Marigold start PvPing IRL.

Before Akima beats me to it I feel the need to point out that the space elevator won't help HannerDad much, if he is at a low orbit. The task of matching velocities would still need quite a bit of thrust. Ok, she replied on that topic...

Well, space-travel is a massive project. There are the obvious benefits to having a network of satellites. May be there are also benefits to having manned space stations, but the costs for that are also very high. If China and/or Japan decides to join in the space race and, say, declare a target of building a manned Moon base, then the Americans could be relied upon taking that as a challenge. All the while I would be admiring the scale of the engineering effort and twiddling my thumbs. But with no national pride at stake nor any relatively short term economic advantages in sight I'm a bit pessimistic.

=====

I agree not much to talk about this week. But...

Are Marigold and Dale PvPing there? I think that round one is due some time soon. I really don't know what I would like the outcome of their duel to be. At the moment I'm rooting for a power outage at the moment they are both down to one hitpoint (sorry, I only know the old Angband, where having only one hitpoint remaining means that you should take immediate effort to 'heal' yourself by whatever medical or magical means you have at hand - an antbite could kill you at that point - WoW players are welcome to educate me here). With that outcome they would both think that they had a lucky escape, and mutual respect might emerge.

Anyways: I kinda suspected the shop was that narrow, but I always thought that the entrance to the back room was on the same wall as the blackboard and specials board. Of course, Jeph has never been all that great about keeping the same floorplan for the places in his comic. Marten and Faye's apartment seems to have a moving bathroom, or so it seems.

Big blackboard is there next to the hot drinks sign, I think the perceived depth is a "camera trick" which makes it seem that way, intentionally or otherwise, but in reviewing some of the past strips around 1900-1925ish, the shop does seem fairly narrow. In that same group of strips there is a door on the right side of the back wall, same as this drawing. I think Jeph should do a shot like this and sell a print of it. I'd probably hang that on my wall.

I'm still hoping for Chris Baldwin, but it's a long shot.

That's a cool overhead shot.

I wonder if Marigold and Dale are competing against each other

Dora must have the Broadsword out to make sure they don't get too feisty.

Yes, I'm geeky enough that I figured out a floorplan for CoD. And yes, I think the comic is wrong - there's supposed to be a second door on the back wall to the storeroom and to the alley in back (not to mention down to the basement where Dora does her roasting).

And yes, I'm even more geeky in that I've got a floorplan of Marten and Dora's apartment, too:

We have all been out-geeked.

Those belong on the wiki.

I am not worthy.

edit: holy cow, smbc... eeek. I haven't even read it yet.

Here we go.

edit 2: I can't help but notice that Hanners is very popular amongst the guest cartoonists so far. One could be mistaken for believing that she is the cartoon's protagonist...

I feel like an idiot for asking this, I'm technologically competent but I've never used Twitter at all; how do I find the cosplay pictures Jeph mentioned in the news post? I went to his twitter but didn't see anything that looked like a picture or link to one

The one girl has Hanners down pat. Now she only needs that Winslow "iPillow" from a few years back.

Pizza Girl was great, but she forgot the mask. No biggie, since she was really playing Penelope as Pizza Girl...

Saved the best comic for Friday, IMO.

Honestly, I wish QC would touch on the robots some.  You'd think in a world with robots who can walk/talk we'd be seeing them more around town.  Especially since everyone seems to be able to afford one.  They would be doing the majority of the jobs that the QC cast currently does.

Nice artwork, but Faye and Marigold look like twins in this scene.  The exact same face angle isn't helping things.
I hope you've noticed that Dora and Marten's faces are interchangeable in many of the comics.
Seriously...what I've taken away from guest strip week is that Dora = Marten + (larger) breasts.

I know a LONG while ago we had a poster and his GF dress up as Marten & Dora for Halloween - complete with a cardboard-cutout version of Pintsize.
