Title: Thanksgiving poll
Post by: Carl-E on 23 Nov 2011, 12:10
So, what are you thankful for?  Last year's poll had some interesting answers...

Personally, I'm thankful that I'm up to two jobs again, though the pay's less than the two old ones.  I'm thankful the lawyers are working with me to resolve the foreclosure from this summer's unemployment (and that I have a retirement account to raid for the funds).

It's a smaller dinner this year, only about half as many people as last year when we had 15 for dinner.  But my wife's having trouble scaling down...

Anybody hungry?  Stop on by!  There's plenty.

I'm thankful I have a steady job with the Navy and am finally getting to see the wonderful country of Japan! It sucks being away from home on Thanksgiving but in this day and age with Skype and everything else the internet has to offer we are never to far away from our loved ones.

AFAIK Thanksgiving is not really celebrated outside North America (and IIRC Canadians have it on a different date). Not because we would not have many things to be thankful about, but simply because the tradition does not exist. Anyway, those of us furriners who have seen "Planes, trains and automobiles" have gotten a glimpse of how much it means to those who do follow this tradition.

So, enjoy your Thanksgiving. With your loved ones, if at all possible.

Thanksgiving is my favorite Holiday.

It has Secular, Spiritual and Patriotic aspects that make it the best in my opinion.

It's like Christmas, Easter and the Fourth of July all rolled into one.

And it's always on a Thursday, which makes it last for four or five days, each day having another Thanksgiving Dinner that couldn't be beat.

If you don't have it in your culture, you're really missing out.

Turkey is for Christmas, of course - these impatient people are just jumping the gun...

Enjoy your thanksgiving, you folks who are celebrating it!

Ah, but it's NOT just turkey. It's turkey with the trimmings:

I'm getting hungry just thinking about it!

We also have trimmings - just different.

Sweet potatoes (or "Yams", as some call them).

I used to think they were the same - but when I actually started to use them, my wife made it clear to me that they are not, and not even related.  In fact Yams are monocots and Sweet Potatoes are dicots, which makes them very widely separated indeed botanically.

I've never cooked a yam; but use sweet potatoes nearly as often as potatoes.

Sweet potato and red pepper soup - yummy!

I am thankful because my birthday was pretty nice (I'll celebrate on friday/saturday though). My new leather-that-isn't-really-leather jacket is awesome in so many levels... I feel so metal.
