Title: Art's amazing evolution, and then...
Post by: rodtorfelsonsarmada on 25 Apr 2012, 15:41
I've been reading QC for ages but never posted anything. I've found most of the webcomics I read have slumped over the last year or so, but for the most part QC has maintained its excellence. Achewood died, ScaryGoRound died, Penny Arcade got stale, PVP got some sort of new art style that looks too much like Chuck Jones for me (i dislike the way Brent and Skull look now with pupils and whites in their eyes), Starslip just lost me, Diesel Sweeties got dull, Real Life got duller, Wondermark got old...

I read Chainsawsuit and QC and Girls With Slingshots and little more anymore.

I've always been amazed at how far Jeph's art has come since the beginning, but... and there's gotta be a but... why over the last year has he started drawing Dora and Faye with giant frog mouths? It makes me think they always look angry, and a bit mannish, and... I dunno. I just cringe when I see them in comics anymore.

There, opinion... away!

Jeph never seems to be satisfied with his work and keep changing things. That, I think, is why he outperforms many others.

Well.

The best QC is IMHO still this one (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=79).

Best punchline ever.

That is funny, but I always wonder why Faye started using contractions, it was at first a big part of her character, but over the times she more and more dropped the Peggy Hill talk.

It's covered in one of the wikis. She was trying to shake her accent when she came north, as I recall.

Regarding the OP, most of Jeph's mouths are pretty large, look at Marten and Steve's mouths here (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2174).  At least, when they're open.  When closed, they sort of disappear.

Now take women who may have fuller lips and put those lips around mouths of that size.  That's what you're seeing on Faye and Dora.  Lipstick can accentuate the effect (like with Hannelore in SPAAACE!).

Notice Marigold's less-full lips here (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2175).  The mouth's no smaller than Faye's, but without the lips, it's quite a difference in appearance.

Agreed, Carl-E. But it's seemed to become more exaggerated lately. To the point that the side shots of Faye in this strip make her look like a frog with an overbite, and the front shots like she borrowed Kermit the Frog's mouth.

Similarly muppety is the similarity between the boys in this strip and Guy Smiley everybody's favorite gameshow host yaayyyyy!):

Anyway, yeah, the last strip was the best I'd seen in ages, but the art has started to bug me, so meh.

Their mouths can wrap around their entire head, as long as the art doesn't go back to the original style.

I used to work with a guy named Art. I'm not sure he ever evolved.

That's awesome! And it explains everything. Jeph's decided to evolve his characters toward Reach Toothbrush Flip Top Heads.

Things change with Webcomics, and sometimes not for the best.

Of the originals I started reading nearly a decade ago now;

Angels2200 seems to have stalled
YU+ME came to a conclusion
The Lounge is slowly coming to a conclusion (that's according to its creator, John Jeosco)
Rave Kitty also seems to have died
Alpha Shade just died mid story
Upheaval seems to be as erratic as hell with its updates.

I have started reading one or two others though and they seem to be going well.

It's been stated somewhere that if you don't like something about the artwork, wait a couple weeks and it'll change.

The other cool thing about webcomics is seeing someone's list of "long term" webcomics and recognizing none of them. How does that still happen?!?

The Internet, like the world, is a really big place.

The Internet, like the world, is a really big place.
Steven Wright: It's a small world... but I wouldn't want to paint it.

My problem is, I remember when the Internet was small. I remember when DNS was new, when using bang paths to send email was required, and when you could finger someone without getting arrested. I'm an Internet old fogey. Get off my newsfeed!
