And another week in the books. Hopefully Jeph gets back home from Maryland refreshed and ready to tackle the BIG issues.
Like what Claire and Clinton's relationship is REALLY like.
-
Assuming those college freshmen are high schoolers is better than the reverse
-
They looked more like women to me.
-
Waah. Oglaf down?
-
They looked more like women to me.
But "Fresh Women" has a different meaning.
-
This week starts off with Marigold recoiling in horror as she realizes what she did in Friday's strip. :P
Not that I disagree with her at all.
I like the theory about discovering more of Claire and Clinton's relationship. Maybe they don't want to see each other, but Clinton stalks Hannelore often enough, and Marten comes to CoD with the interns often enough, that eventually they're going to overlap.

All I can think about are those sounds... THOSE SOUNDS!!!

You know, technically, she didn't answer Momo's question.

I WAS EXAGGERATING!
No Mari. No you weren't. In fact, one could say you are kinda creepy because you basically implied you might masturbate to Angus and Faye having sex. I digress but you know that idea is going to pop up sooner or later.
-
I think (hope) you meant Faye, not Dora!

Oops sorry! I requested it after I voted as a way for this thread to show up in my "unread posts" thinger.
Can I change my vote? I'll try.

I did. I was thinking of Dora at the time and it came out through the fingers. :-D

Oh, goodie! Another Rorschach inkblot post. I never get tired of these.

I WAS EXAGGERATING!
It's okay to be a sub, Marigold! It is a perfectly legitimate lifestyle choice!
Just don't tell Dale about it.

Since there was no such implication in the cartoon, feel free to tell me where else the implication came from other than your own head.
-
I love how Momo got right up next to her before asking, lol
-

Oh come off of it. I was just having a bit of fun. The idea of Marigold becoming aroused from hearing Angus (the guy she used to like) having sex is a possibility, not matter how minute it may be. Of course, if you're going to be an ass about it then I expect you to keep quiet whenever you bring up anything relating to Dora/Tai in the future.

Oh come off of it. I was just having a bit of fun. The idea of Marigold becoming aroused incredibly uncomfortable from hearing Angus (the guy she used to like) having sex is a possibility, not matter how minute it may be. Of course, if you're going to be an ass about it then I expect you to keep quiet whenever you bring up anything relating to Dora/Tai in the future.
This seems much more likely, imo.

I heard the Jaws music when I saw the strip. :-D

Actually... it "popped up" about six months before the comic did.
Yes, there was R34 art of the exact scenario you describe a full half-year before the comic suggesting it existed. I know, I've seen it and know when it was created.
Which means either Jeph is getting ideas from porno, or we've somehow encountered some sort of erotic predestination paradox.
Also, that blushing and unnecessarily-loud denial Marigold has in the last panel? She does - she totally does.
-
Anybody else got reminded of the infamous Ninja Cat (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NbwpgyRUv5g) video?
-
Hey, go for it - no-one said you can't have a bit of fun.
I just decided to have my own bit of fun, by pointing out that you were the one who implied it. Was a bit surprised when you tried to deny it, really.
Carry on. I'll continue to work on my amazing mind reading powers.
:-D
-
So is Momo's hair always translucent, or is that just one of her settings (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2250)?
-
No Mari. No you weren't. In fact, one could say you are kinda creepy because you basically implied you might masturbate to Angus and Faye having sex. I digress but you know that idea is going to pop up sooner or later.
Actually no, Marigold supposedly masturbated last night, while they had sex just now after Faye went home to 'work off some excess rage'.
-
This discussion makes my eyes roll to the point where it's uncomfortable.
-
And yet it's still arguably better than one nitpicking arm poses.
-

So Angus and Faye only had sex that one time? I wasn't talking about this particular situation even though I could have worded it better.
-
So Angus and Faye only had sex that one time? I wasn't talking about this particular situation even though I could have worded it better.
No, but likely they don't have sex daily (yet). And likely Marigold doesn't masturbate daily. At least since this is the first time Angus mentioned being loud and asked if they disturbed her, it might be the first time they had sex when Marigold was around. From the times we've seen, they had sex in Faye's place and likely when Marigold was in space.
-

I assumed the point was that it was significantly noisier than usual this time, due to being primarily a rage-venting therapy session for Faye.

Yes - it's common in manga or anime, and Momo's always been like that. Sometimes Jeph's done it with other characters, but only a bit.
-
(Ahem)
I WAS EXAGGERATING!
I'm sorry, can you repeat that? Twenty-six years in the artillery have done some things to my ears....

(Ahem)
I WAS EXAGGERATING!
Yes, but "I WAS EXAGGERATING" isn't necessarily "I don't do that." And seeing how embarrassed she looks (as compared to the total lack of embarrassment when she actually did her butt-slap dance), that means that either she doesn't do it and is perishing the thought or she is in disbelief that she revealed something so personal in the heat of the moment. Both options are completely valid, and I choose the funnier one.
-
I hate you all ... to infinity and beyond! ...... Now how the Aitch Eee Double-hockey-sticks am I going to get this to stop looping through my head? :psyduck:
All better now?
-
Momo is either terrified or intrigued.
-
Pro'lly both.
-
And that's not a bad thing.
For us.
-
It's probably hard to terrify someone who's been through Marigirl's browser history and the library's entire porn collection.
-
...and has the hentai portion of Pintsize's Incredible Stash of Pron.
-
... and an extensive social protocol database, including eels.
-
I originally read today's strip on my phone, so I couldn't really tell that Marigold's head had moved. So it looked like the poster was coming out of her head, like her hair was growing out of control and at weird angles. I was staring at it and thinking that it had some relevance to what Momo was doing. Then I got to the third panel and remembered about her poster. Oops.
I also voted for the second option, because that just seems inconsiderate. >_> I guess Momo had powered off or something? But what if she had woken up or something like that? D: Or would she have set it on a timer so she'd wake up at an appropriate hour?

jwhouk, you totally called it. ;D
And it figures that Hannelore would be fascinated by the idea of psychic twins. :P
-
OK, then. They're not the same person.
-
OK, then. They're not the same person.
Was that ever in question?
My guess is that they are very close in age - maybe just a year or so apart, and has spent their entire childhood competing and getting on each other's nerves.

Ok, WHEN did Clinton grow his hair out and since when does Claire have short hair and a robot hand?
-

I see you watched Black Lagoon as well. Damn Shota/Loli Vampire Twins....
-
Does #2277 seem a bit blurry to anyone else? Almost like it was resized from a different resolution compared to normal...
-
Claire/Clinton - sorry, we're going with Marty - you're creepy. And the mirror imaging isn't helping.
So now, can we get some backstory, and will it be in stereo?
-
Does #2277 seem a bit blurry to anyone else? Almost like it was resized from a different resolution compared to normal...
Now that you mention it, yeah, I guess it might be a bit blurry.
I've been too distracted by the thin white line down the left side where Jeph missed pasting the comic in to fixate on the blur though.
-
I want to see them answer with the same number (nice thinking, Hannelore 8-) ).
I wouldn't mind seeing some backstory with Claire and Clinton, as well. Would be interesting...
-
OK, then. They're not the same person.
Well, maybe CLaire was CLoned from CLinton's hand.

Nevermind that - no blackboard specials today?
-
It looks like it's no-specials-day in-universe as well, the last few CoD strips have been without specials. I wonder if that's deliberate (can't think of any, plot point [although I'm not sure what it would be], couldn't be botherd), or if Jeph just forgot to put them in the first strip and has left them out for continuity's sake.
I'm reading far too much into this, aren't I?

Tsk, tsk, Hannelore - between 1 and 256? Really? Properly nerdy would be between 0 and 255.
-
Now this is my lovely QC this week.
Classic Marigold moment.
And now Claire and Clinton finally meet up, very awkwardly.
Yes, you two.....you are really creepy.
-
Well, Dora has too much on her mind to do specials and Faye left before she could write them.
I'm looking forward to backstory, like why Clint dresses like such a geek and Claire dresses relatively normally. Seriously, that bowtie kills me.
-

It's embarrassing to admit it, but this was my reaction too. Pretty FFucked up, isn't it?
Marten and Hannelore's expressions are classic.

"Properly nerdy" is quoting xkcd (http://xkcd.com/163/).

Is this the first time we see an indication of the counter at the counter?

OMG!!!! There is NOTHING written on the chalk board!!!
Perhaps that was a bit of an overreaction but I find the blank board creepy :).

Nah... d-255 is FF. d-256 is 100. It's far more culturally appropos to ask somebody to pick a number between 1 and 100! I mean cheese. Just because you're operating in a sensible base doesn't mean you're constrained by the registers in an NES. :P
-
Yeah, but 100ked up doesn't have the same effing sound.
-
Arrays aside, it's often easier even in more advanced computer science to count from one. Besides, pretty much everyone knows nowadays that something is up with the number 256.
-
It took seven posts and Redball to point it out, but I started to slowly grrroooooooannnnnn shortly thereafterwards.
And I prefer FC-C9-17.
-
So they're not twins.
Also, we should keep in mind that they aren't even necessarily siblings. When Clinton was asked earlier about having a sister, he just said "why do you ask", and "you've met Claire?"
Beside the possibility that two identical characters with alliterative names might actually have no relation whatsoever (which would be kind of cool), it's entirely possible they're clones (If we posit the possibility of opposite-sex clones in a post-Singularity universe, which isn't a big stretch). So that's what I'm guessing.
-
Whatever it is, they're both creepy

Didn't Hanners mention she was a test tube baby or something like that in a comic once?
-
Didn't Hanners mention she was a test tube baby or something like that in a comic once?
Well, there's her mother wondering when Hanners was conceived (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=922), and Hanners herself saying cloning is something her dad would do (http://www.questionablecontent.net/1662).
(I want to meet altered Hanners, although not for a long arc. Gulp.)

why do I feel like this is going to end in a slapfight
Clinton wins, because of his metal hand.

Clinton wins, because of his [detachable insolent] metal hand.
-
I have just decided that the main reason that I like Hannelore's reaction is that she finds the whole situation fascinating, not creepy.
-
Actually, there's a guy who's my .. fourth cousin? Our great-grandfathers were brothers.
We discovered each other as teens, and looked almost exactly the same. We reconnected in college (his Ph.D. is in computer science...), and were both balding, bearded and thick glasses. Beneath all that, we still had the same facial and body structure, though he's taller.
And now, we still look a lot alike, though he's gone with contacts and is a little balder and grayer than I am. He also has a few years on me, so I guess I'm lookin' at the near future...
Point is, genetics can play funny tricks in a family, even from a distance!
-
It's not a guest appearance, and it is not relevant to this week (so far), but I'm not going to drag up old WCDTs, so ... while we're waiting for our fix (with full understanding of the delay and well wishes for our host) ...
... this seems relevant to the development and discussion of recent weeks: http://www.yousayitfirst.com/comics/index.php?date=20120919
... or even commentary on them? 8-)

I spent an hour looking around that, and I still am not sure where it ends. Hopefully he'll put up a full-size version somewhere, or at least tileable images.
EDIT: I got first post after the new comic :D
Any idea what Claire means by 'He didn't say anything weird, did he?" She was there.
-
God, I couldn't even tell how long I was there for... I was hoping Randall would link the full picture, myself (or at least somehow be able to pull it from the click -and-drag part).
Awesome to see the comic up (have to check the Twitter feed to see what was up with Jeph). You can't tell me that Claire is going to go all fangirl-ish on Hanners, too...
Like how casual Marten is on the situation, too.
-
I like how Marten is so nonchalant about Hannners breaking out the hose.
But from Claire & Clinton's behavior, his original assesment of "oh, about 8th grader" gets reinforced IMO.

Me neither. I loved the part that looked like a Lemmings level. But when I followed one of the wells a bit down, I encountered a few people, whose comment seemed to imply that several SuperMarios have fallen down there. I felt cheated and gave up :-)

I considered it to be the end when I went for about ten drags without seeing anything (which means I may not have actually hit the bottom or top...)
Also, if Randall doesn't post a copy of the whole thing, probably someone else will stitch it together (haven't read the xkcd forums today, maybe someone already has). It looks like all the images are of the naming scheme "imgs.xkcd.com/clickdrag/4n24e.png", so it would be easy to write a script that would download them all. I'm not going to, as I've already spent too much time on this...

http://echochamber.me/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=91362 (http://echochamber.me/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=91362) is the discussion thread for today's XKCD comic
Judging by the squared measurements [14 N, 48 E, 25 S, 33 W] (at 2048 x 2048px per square), the whole would be 165888 x 79782px.
The most intruiging part is, ALL OF THAT would only be a miniscule representation of our world...
Edit: To create all of that in GIMP takes memory space of 124.8GB. Anyone got a spare datacentre?

Cue tomorrow's strip where Tai sees the trio enter the library - MArten and Gabby chatting away, and Claire looking like a drowned rat.
-
Hannelore loves that hose..
with good reason too, if people went all fangirl/boy over me because of my parents i'd probably try for an implant of Momo's electric shock system.

Did you find the X-Wing yet?
-
The question(s) is/are [delete as appropriate]...
Is that hose always connected? If so, why? Do that many creeps come in that they need large quantities of high pressure water available at a moment's notice?
Pre-post edit:
Which X-Wing? There's two.
-
The one in the shaft heading upwards, talking to Gold Leader.
Also, I can confirm there is a rightmost edge, beyond which lies the unknown deeps.

Pre-post edit:
Which X-Wing? There's two.
Some possible explanations are
o The hose is actually hooked to a coffee machine and is used for the greediest customers
o It's just a cartoon and things happen for no other reason than being funny
o They leave the hose connected so Dora can make her employees do wet T-shirt contests
o It's used on customers who don't tip
o It's not actually connected all the time but Hannelore's genetically engineered reaction speed allow her to get it out of the closet and hook it up before anyone else can blink.

As for the memory issues, I have access to a supercomputer that could fit that into the memory of 8 nodes (16 GB per node). Is there a distributed computing version of GIMP?

I think the hose is my new favorite character.
-
IIRC, last time the hose was brought out, it was shown as not connected.
So, it's just being used as a flail.

Perhaps the hose is connected, this time.
If so, IDUHG, this would be character evolution.

Marten's description contains two vital bits of info:
• the barista's name is Hannelore
• Clinton is a fanboy of her father
If we assume that Clinton is enough of a fanboy to talk the ears off of anyone foolish enough to stand still for it on his favourite subject and that Claire is actually his kin in some degree and therefore somewhat socially obliged to listen when he drones on at parties, it stands to reason that she'd be somewhat familiar with the details. Though her association time was suspiciously short to jump directly from "daughter of stupid Clinton's stupid crush" to screaming Hanners' full name out without some small degree of pre-established connection… perhaps meeting Clinton so unexpectedly was enough to stimulate the right synapses? Otherwise it might seem, to those without the relevant background, that Claire herself is potentially as obsessed as Clinton.
Of course it could turn out that she actually is a fangirl, just not of Hanners' dad…
-
Is that hose always connected? If so, why? Do that many creeps come in that they need large quantities of high pressure water available at a moment's notice?
Maybe they hose off the pavement (sidewalk) outside the shop each morning, like many cafés in Sydney? A mundane explanation? That's just crazy-talk! Obviously Dora has had the CoD fitted out like an abattoir, so that the staff can just hose the place down after the kung-fu monks have fled over the rooftops taking their wounded with them? The hose ought really to have one of those on-off nozzles though.
-
What would a Beatrice fan girl be like?
-
The thing about fanpeople is that you can never really be sure just exactly what they're fans of. In the sense that, should you objectively compare a collection of fans' descriptions of their object both with each other and an accurate depiction of said object, you will find wide variances from each other and from reality.
So any given fan of anything, could be "like" whatever it is they think they're worshiping rather than what everyone else thinks they are…
-
That applies to everything, not just fandom -- from the whole basis of the movie "Rashomon" to any police report with more than one witness -- or news story derived therefrom.
I would ask, however, that you stipulate there's a difference (mainly in degree) between "fanboy/girl" and just plain "fan."
-
You would think that, in the kitchen part of the shop (or at least wherever she has the cleaning stuff) she had a floor drain installed. In which case, she could have a faucet with a hose adapter thread on it to allow for hosing down the floor by the drains (in case of an espresso machine explosion, perhaps?).
-

Oh naturally there's a difference. And I've always found it to be that fanboys/girls exaggerate their object's achievements and diminish their faults in direct proportion to their fanaticism.
So a B E-C fangirl might well have latched on to the fact that she's become a powerful business leader and also a mother and ignore that she got there by questionably legal means and almost aloof her mothering was by proxy. Actually meeting Hanners could well cause apoplexy in such a person…

It went the way of the dinosaur.
Wormholes.

So basically, Claire isn't a clone of Clinton, she's a clone of E. Honda.

While we wait... what's this John Campbell thing Jeph is talking about on twitter?
John Campbell posted an update to his Pictures for Sad Children book 2 Kickstarter claiming he's been faking his depression the whole time. tumblr did not get the joke.

Edit : Added link

Hmm. Very thoughtful. I have to admit I don't quite get it. Is he saying that depression is solely a cultural phenomenon? I really can relate to what he is saying about artists projection an image of being depressed though.
EDIT: Oh shit this is bigger than I thought... What the hell? This is one weird joke, if it is a joke.
-
Oh, Claire. You're digging yourself a grave honey.
Ah, Hanners. Love you. Use the hose already!
Wonder if Sir Patrick Stewart is another of Hanner's crushes like firemen were.
-
i can see where Claire is going with the argument. what seems to be her problem is that she sees almost everything as a logical thing. for example, being outright flabbergasted that her fellow interns were only at the library for reasons not entirely necessary to education. This isnt necessarily a bad thing, but delving into logic far too often around those not aligned to logical things, or aligned to a different form of logic, she will find herself in plenty of situations like this.
-
Friday's comic is going to be verrrrryyyyy innnnnteressssstink.
-
... or just a back story: "How Clinton lost his hand."
-
I think this is another case of Hannelore getting someone's tone all wrong and then not paying attention to what they're saying. (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1772) And another case of Claire expressing herself poorly then quadrupling down on the poor expression.
Or Hanners is tumblr, Claire is John Campbell, and Marten is Jeph being amused at the altercation.
-
Hanners would make an excellent prosecuting attorney.
And Claire's a lousy defendant.
Now, is Clinton your brother, or what?
-
I'm not even sure I'd want Claire to be giving affidavit evidence.
As a big plus, it is enjoyable seeing Hanners playing this up so well. She is playing, isn't she?
-
And now Claire learns who Marten's mother is...
-
... As a big plus, it is enjoyable seeing Hanners playing this up so well. She is playing, isn't she?
I think that's why I like this character so much. We're never quite sure, are we?
-
And now Claire learns who Marten's mother is...
Now there's a meeting I want to see. Assuming they haven't met already…
-

To quote Terry Pratchett, "humans have always preferred common sense to logic" (-Interesting Times). Your analysis of Claire's character is essentially the reason why, I think.
Also, speaking as somebody who is studying logic at university, logic sucks. :P
And anyway, Hannerdad IS pretty cool whichever way you look at him. I mean, the guy has a space station and an army (of cancer-fighting nanomachines (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1904)) at his disposal, he is basically THE mad scientist! ;D
-
I think Martens expression is a sign that he's enjoying seeing reality attack someone other than him with rather extreme irrationality

Okay I'm going to jump on this because I have been watching Tumblr flail around being godawful shithead morons all night and I want the QCF to know the score:
-John Campbell has depression. As in, clinical depression. He is not faking depression.
-People who fake clinical depression do not fucking exist. The idea that people who have this crippling mental condition are "fakers" or just need to learn how to be "self-loving" is ridiculous and offensive.
-He is posing as someone who is faking depression for profit in order to criticize the idea that artists who are depressed are "just faking it". It is satirical of the terrible attitude people have about mental illness!
-Jeph, likely because he has mental conditions of his own, found the satire to be very funny.
-People on Tumblr, many of them not mentally disabled and in fact just seeking to promote what the Tumblr hive mind has told them activism and social justice is, took the satirical posing as a sincere statement. They acted very badly in response.
-Jeph attempted to engage them in discussion.
-You do not do that with Tumblr, because it's Tumblr.
EDITED in case some Tumblrites find me here and I have to deal with them
-
Thanks for jumping on it! I was really wondering what the hell was going on there. I found Campbell's post really puzzling because I thought it was so tasteless there was no way it could be real, but then it was so well written I couldn't tell for sure..

I've found that satire, like sarcasm, doesn't translate well to the internet. Many people just don't pick up on it.
-
Poe's law wins again.
-
I am very glad Jeph has a sense of humor about it. Humor has a partial protective effect against emotional death spirals.
-
I've found that satire, like sarcasm, doesn't translate well to the internet. Many people just don't pick up on it.
It's not the internet. It's been a problem since at least the time of Jonathan Swift (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonathan_Swift)'s A Modest Proposal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Modest_Proposal). The internet just increases the audience of stupid people, and distributes their stupidity more widely.
And Claire? "Stupid" is not a good word to apply to someone's parent to their face. You should have worked this out by now. Marten is so enjoying this. I think there is a touch of "Welcome to my world!".
-
I think the problem with this John Campbell post, for me at least, is that it makes no sense whatsoever unless you have been immersed in all the discussion and context that led up to it (as obviously he has, probably Jeph, and probably his fan base as well; but perhaps not the tumblr people who are bitching about it).
I mean, I can see that it is satire, but I am totally unfamiliar with whatever it is that is satirising. Hence - bafflement.
And yes, Marten is enjoying this. To me, that grin is saying "sorry - you're on your own, I'm enjoying this too much to help!"
-
Man, Clinton is going to flip when he learns they recenty went to space and hung out with Hanners's dad.
-
Marten's probably thinking "In the words of Roy Greenhilt, 'It's like I'm watching my life, but from the outside' (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0209.html)"
-
Just an interesting aside that I've enjoyed seeing since Hanners met Marten.
I do believe the bags under her eyes are completely gone now.
Marten and Hanners has proven to be true, real friendship. Marten may never find romantic happiness, but if you can't have that, a Hanners is a solid substitute.
Anyway, I'd agree with Marten. He's had far too many foot in mouth experiences, people misunderstanding him, digging himself a grave, he's amused to see someone else dong a worse job of it than himself. Claire is even more socially inept.
-
Yes, that's a good point! (I assume you meant "his eyes")
Hanners has been good for him.
-
Yes, that's a good point! (I assume you meant "his eyes")
Hanners had bags under her eyes for a loooong run of the comic. Though, Martin's (from the Padma fiasco) have also cleared up, as well.
-
Hanners and Sir Patrick Stewart ...
No, that would be star-shipping.
-
I'm not sure that I can allow that enterprise.
-
If it were to happen and we all were to watch we'd all be voyageurs

You people are pretty warped...

It's a TOS-up.

That's a bald statement, do you have any Data to back up your claims?
-
What is this whole Frakes about, anyway?
-
Do you have no Beverly ? This thread is going to Crusher.
-
Thank god a new comic's up to re-rail this thread!
I think Hanners knows better - and Claire's just an easy mark!
Good to see Marten "riffing" off it, too!
-
And, yay, he's back on guitars/music again. Maybe he'll get motivated and work on that whole band thing some more?
Also, you missed a perfect "dragging <the thread> through the Mudd" line there.
-
Kitty kitty kitty,
Cat's relax me, and that is a cool Kitty.
That said, it wouldn't surprise me that Hannelore still thinks her life is a sham, like the times she's asked if everyone is just paid actors who are being paid to be her friends.
-
Why yes Marten, there is an infinite guitars cheat. To activate it you first must restart the universe while holding the Shift key. This brings up the console.
-
I'm not sure that there's an infinite guitars cheat, but there is of course an infinite money cheat: All Hanners has to do is call her cousin Vinnie.
*hoping I'm not the only one who gets that joke*...
I call the second panel "Blackboard-O-Vision", and I think there should be more panels like it in the future.
And why WOULDN'T Hannelore be working at a coffee shop in Northampton?
-
hahahahaha! LOVE Marten's retort!
That is all.
-
There's a nigh-infinite guitars cheat. Does that count? (It's called the magical land of China.)
I am now wondering what the magical land of China's guitars are like in the QC universe.
-
I can't help but suspect that Claire's last line is a product of, or is at least influenced by, that tumblr debacle.
-
If Jeph ever (God forbid) ends QC, I'd love to see the "St. Elsewhere" ending. A young Hanners staring at a snow globe with Coffee Of Doom in it. :D
-
I'm not sure that there's an infinite guitars cheat, but there is of course an infinite money cheat: All Hanners has to do is call her cousin Vinnie.
*hoping I'm not the only one who gets that joke*...
I recognised that it was something, but not from where it came until I looked it up. So that's one and a half people at least?
-
SimCity 3000? I really need to start playing that again.
-
Aaand now I'm visualizing guitarmaking in the world of QC. Picture it. An orbital habitat full of zero-g grown trees, where luthiers, human and robotic, live in a filthy hippie metal community, orbitally dropping the fruits of their labor to good little girls and boys.
-
Aaand now I'm visualizing guitarmaking in the world of QC. Picture it. An orbital habitat full of zero-g grown trees, where luthiers, human and robotic, live in a filthy hippie metal community, orbitally dropping the fruits of their labor to good little girls and boys.
... however, it being Marten's world as well, the guitars all burn up on entry.
-
Actually I got that wrong, calling cousin Vinnie only gets you $100,000. But given that that's enough money to buy several power plants and build lots of roads, housing zones etc., it'd probably be a lot more in the QCverse.
(I just thought: If I had infinite money, I would build a life-size replica of the Serenity, which worked as well as technology of the day could allow. Why hasn't Hannerdad thought of that yet?)
-
Pretty sure it's actually §100,000 which is a value of incalculable worth since that's the generic currency symbol. Besides which, it's not like you can't call Vinnie a bunch of times…
On the topic of sim city and other sim games, has anyone else ever wanted a vertical series of Sim games, from The Sims up through Sim Tower, Sim City, and the other more esoteric sims they had around when SC2k was current, that were all integrated so that your sim home was in the same sim city as the sim tower where your sim worked his sim job and all of that was on one of the sim islands you manage on the sim world you created?
Then add a bit of sideways integration with things like GTA and those public transport simulators that seem to be all the rage in Japan….
Just me then?
-
Oh my. What a mind fuck.
What if the QC verse really is just a simulation Elliot Chatham devised for Hanners? That's certainly a way to teach someone. Hit them with heavy drama from all sides.
Solid cheat to ask for Marten. But, bringing back the (Dora cloning strip from long ago).
How about, infinite guitars and a set of cloned naked Padmas?
Yes, that's a good point! (I assume you meant "his eyes")
Hanners had bags under her eyes for a loooong run of the comic. Though, Martin's (from the Padma fiasco) have also cleared up, as well.
I did mean Hanners, though now that you mention it, Marten's are gone as well.
True pals. If the whole band thing doesn't work, they should just go Black Keys style and be a two person band with drums and a guitar.
-

What I would really like would be a Streets of SimCity remake that's compatible with SimCity 4.

We are all figments of Hannelore's imagination.
Well. That explains it, then.
-
We are all figments of Hannelore's imagination.
Well. That explains it, then.
In reality, we are all batteries in John Ellicott-Chatham's planetwide supercomputer. Now take the blue pill to see the world as it is (or is it the red pill? Can't remember)
-
What does that say about Hannelore's mind then, if her imagination created Pintsize? :-o
-
Hanners needs to share those cheat codes. I need to fix some messes myself!
-
She didn't invent Pintsize, Pintsize is part of the programming inserted as both an element of chaos to help learn to deal with unforeseeable events and to teach her how to deal with the inevitable pervs. If you can handle perviness from Pintsize, then anything you encounter in the real world will be a cake walk.
And the reduction of the bags under her eys is really apparent in Friday's strip. Hanners seems to be doing a lot better. I think the CoD job has been really good for her.
-
No one pointed it out yet, but today's strip gave us final confirmation that Claire and Clinton are siblings. Not that there were much doubt, but still.
-
Cheat codes are kinda like wishes?
http://www.sheldoncomics.com/archive/120920.html
... careful with that infinity, Marten ....
-
I dont think Hanners believes this setting is out of her imagination, so she hasnt imagined Pintsize, either.
Also, you missed a perfect "dragging <the thread> through the Mudd" line there.
On this Trip, we probably only managed Seven of Nine great Star Trek quotes. Dax Life.

I'm fairly sure the QCverse is an imagination from the guy who imagined Hanners.

For comic #2280...
1. Comic title was so full of win for its pun & punchline on Plato's Cave.
2. So it is now confirmed that Clinton & Claire are brother & sister. I also had the impression that Clinton was the elder to Claire's younger, rather than their being twins, but probably not by much years' difference.
3. Art-wise, it was pretty neat to do a front-shot from the chalkboard's POV for panel #2.
4. I would probably enjoy work a lot more if I, or my family, were wealthy enough to not to "need" to work  .
5. Manga-wise, there is a manga out there with the premise that the protagonist (a high-school girl) is a prisoner (or experiment-subject) in a simulated city for dark purposes/study. I do not know the name of it, though :? .
6. And though I am late for it...

I love this, because you can see the Hannelore-ishness of the tutorial even when she's just represented as text (like "Don't listen to your brain if it tells you [the eye circles] have to be perfect. THEY DO NOT HAVE TO BE PERFECT.") ;D

...why has Hannelore not been "diagnosed" with schizophrenia yet?
-
And why WOULDN'T Hannelore be working at a coffee shop in Northampton?
Why indeed? There is a famous Chán (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zen) saying:《一日不做一日不食 》usually translated as "A day without work is a day without eating". Like many Chán ideas, this has multiple meanings. One is the obviously mundane one; that Baizhang Huahai and his fellow monks grew their own food, so if they didn't work the land they would go hungry. The other is that, in the Chán view, work is as essential to spiritual health as food is to physical health. Hannelore understands this.
Marten's quip at the end reminded me of the song "Infinity Guitars" by Sleigh Bells
Your clip is blocked from Australia. This works (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1AD70252O4). Warning: gratuitous cruelty to guitars...
-
It just came to my mind that Claire and Dora could have an interesting conversation about sibling rivalry and conflicts. Conversation that would turn into two monologues.
And then cut to Clinton, at the Horrible Revelation, discussing his conflict with her sister with a random customer who turns out to be Sven.
-
Actually, WOAH. What happened for Steps Nine and Ten of How to Draw a Kitty? Did Hannelore black out and then when she woke up she found that she'd written that all over the page?
That's horrifying. :-o :-o :-o :-o
So many disturbing implications...

See for yourself. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schizophrenia)
Hannelore's showing some nice medium awareness there. It's just a pity that she's so self-centered that it doesn't occur to her that the simulation isn't there for her benefit.
