Title: Shave for Movember
Post by: TheEvilDog on 28 Oct 2012, 10:17
It's that time of the year again, Movember, when men can grow dapper moustaches in support of men's cancer charities.

It's a worthy cause, as is any event that raises awareness about cancer. So please, if you can, donate.

Incidentally, how many of the forum's male population are going to grow a moustache for the month? Because I've already shaved and my face feels extremely cold and I'd feel really daft if I was the only one.

You're a couple days early yet.
Supposed to shave Oct 31st and then not shave the rest of November.
I won't do it because my girlfriend has a 13 year old sister and I don't want to get put on any registries. Also because I don't think we need to raise awareness for cancer. I think we're aware of it by now.

Not quite. Most men are aware of watching out for testicular cancer and lung cancer, but there are several other cancers that are often overlooked. Movember's purpose is to get men to be aware of them. Right now, men are about 16% more likely to develop cancer than women and are 40% more likely to die from it.

(Also, I have an interview tomorrow, so I needed to shave anyway)

I did Movember last year, and ended up raising a few hundred bucks for charity. Rad stuff!

I think we're well aware of some forms of cancer. I'm bloody sick of those, "Hey girls! Post an obscure Facebook status that half your feed won't understand!" crap. Although Movember is also good for raising money too.

My Da is doing it and bringing a form around his work to get donations. I'm trying to get him to make a site account to maybe get some more donations.

I dunno, I tried last year...my facial hair has the manliness of a pre-pubescent girl.

I'm 25. If my beardliness hasn't gone the way of ZZ Top, or at least Commander Riker, then I'm pretty sure it never will.

Is anyone not aware that cancer exists?

Don't be shy; just raise your hand.

The point is not being aware of cancer in general, but that it can affect you and there are things you can watch for to minimise the risk.  Like the way women are taught to be conscious of breast lumps.

I was lucky; I found mine while it was easy to deal with - a couple of months later and I might have been dead 20 years ago.

My daughter's wasn't diagnosed correctly for nearly 4 months - it metastasized as a result, and we're lucky she's still here.

Even if you're aware of it, it can still get you.  Some forms are very sneaky.

Also, I shaved last year for this, first time in over 25 years.

Why did it change to just mustaches and not stick with the rules of No-Shave-November and be all facial hair?

Good luck to those of you raising money for charity!

Linds, it changed so that you can start with Movember and then roll on into Decembeard with a starter Mo.

I'm not the only one who noted the worrying connotations of the thread title, right?

Welp, I'll give it what I've got, for all it's worth.

Decembeard...it has a nice ring to it.

Afraid so...at first glance I thought it was about hairstyling.

At least it's better than "Stop-tober" that the NHS decided on. Good idea, ridiculous name.

I find it gently amusing that I have smoked more cigarettes in October 2012 than in the rest of my life combined.

Nope.

Then again at least half of my writing's been about suicide lately, so it's been on my mind.

I'm still considering whether I should participate in this or not; at last count, I only have 112 hairs on my upper lip (...I got bored, 'kay?).

Changed the title into something more appropriate.

What was the thread's previous title?

Something like 'everyone hold up your razors' or something.

Get Your Razors Out.

As in shaving razors.

It made perfect sense before I clicked on the thread. Just made me think it was about cutting yourself before I did.

Someone actually made this some time ago. It's me on the left.
