Title: Calling the dibs on a QC avatar?
Post by: Skewbrow on 16 Feb 2013, 13:16
When I last had a birthday, it lead to a system of  Diophantine equations (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diophantine_equation) and also to a (gentle and polite) remark that my avatar doesn't really match my chronological age. So I've been looking for a new one. There aren't too many characters obviously in their late forties (or thereabouts), but MariDad might fit the bill (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2198). I am much taller (and more handsome ) than Mr Farmer, as shown by this image of
(http://users.utu.fi/lahtonen/CFT.JPG)
yours truly trying to teach some class field theory to himself as well as a few fellow enthusiasts.

But did somebody already stake a claim to MariDad? If not, then I might just apply the principle of "if the Farmer shoe fits ..."

And lookit the formidable forehead radiating the accumulated knowledge!

IIRC many posters wanted to use the pic of young Marten wearing a Dino costume. The priority was resolved without a war, so you're right. Thanks for the clearance.

Worst that can happen is that you'd be mistaken for someone else on the forum.

And there are many worse things.

Also, if anyone else has it already, a) they may soon change anyway if they haven't already (after all, you're abandoning a good Angus for this), and b) you haven't seen it recently, so any user may not actually be active at the moment.

In other words, use what you want!

BTW, I chose mine based on attitude, not age.  Though you could easily imagine my balding head under that cap...

If I had a character as an avatar it would either be Sven, just cause, or the Toaster in the last panel (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1999).

I believe it may be gone forever.  I was sitting in front of one of my machines next to a laptop,  the way the webcam was set I ended up with a rather cool effect on the screen.

Lemme check photobucket.

I have not experienced avatar wars!

I think we're all (mostly) civilized enough to share characters as avatars without getting all fussy about it...we're still ourselves, after all. In fact, I reference the Username more often, especially with people who change their avatar frequently (I'm looking at you, Paul ;D )...I've always used my avatar for every forum I've been on.

My current avatar is Marigold's foot. Guess from where.

So it was you! I had a vague recollection that somebody had used it (which is why I started this thread). Sounds like you're cool with me using it, so I will stick to it for now.

That pic of Angus pondering "to kiss or not to kiss" (my old avatar) did appeal to me. The artwork is really great. And may be I just sympathize with Angus as a character because Mrs Skew also needed a longish persuasion? But I'm also a bit tired of it.

I'm not sure I'd have the nerve to use a character from a comic that the forum is discussing, in that forum (iyswim).  It also tends to confuse me when people use a character whose gender and/or mannerisms are at odds with their own.

I've variously used Bob from Rex The Runt, a headshot of me in a red Santa hat at Christmas, a South Park version of me in front of a Buck Rogers style cartoon rocketship, and the current socks from a group bicycle ride a few years back (where we were missing a cyclist who had previously worn some very striped stockings).  I can't remember why I picked Bob, other than I like him.  I'm not a dog with a big gun, or very enthusiastic about sausages, and I'm certainly not a "Big, fat, jelly-wobbly, fat bastard", although arguably I am a bit of a slob.

Post by: TimO on 21 Feb 2013, 12:20
I'm not sure why that would take any amount of nerve.

It would just seem a bit presumptuous to feel I could associate myself with a character, in an environment where there are a lot of people who feel that they know how that character should behave, and for that matter the author, whose opinion is pretty much definitive by definition.

I'd feel uncomfortable doing it.

Just use a photo of yourself like I do :-)
Title: Re: Calling the dibs on a QC avatar?
Post by: Method of Madness on 21 Feb 2013, 12:28
I disagree on two levels. I don't think my avatar represents me at all, I just like it. And I wouldn't say that the author's view on how a character should behave is necessarily definitive, only how a character does behave. Why would it take any less nerve to use a Pintsize avatar on the Qwantz forum and a T-Rex avatar here?

But mostly I'm curious how one associates themselves with a pair of sneakers.

My avatar is from ages and ages ago when someone posted a whole load of similar pictures (the premise was superheroes' secret desires) and this one just sort of sums me up I guess. Not that I go round saving people's lives or whatever Wonder Woman does, but because I'm very busy and pretty successful but really all I want is to live in a nice little house with some babies and cats.

Terry McGuinness will never be Batman, in my eyes. Sorry, personal preference to the Bruce-ster. :emotrex:
Title: Re: Calling the dibs on a QC avatar?
Post by: Thrudd on 22 Feb 2013, 07:14
I agree that Terry will never be the Bruce-ster but you have to look at the people and times they represent.
At what age did Bruce seriously start out as Batman? As far as I can figure out [weak google fu] he was in his mid to late twenties if not older after all that training and world wandering.
Terry was recruited while still in high-school. Terry was way more socialized than Bruce ever was as a kid and grew up in a much less rarefied social climate.
I like Bruce as a character but I am not so sure about wanting the big faker as a friend. He IS BATMAN and Bruce is just a character he plays in common society.
With Terry we could sit down at a club and talk about the indie rock scene.

How do you know that what you think is Terry McGuinness isn't just a character he plays in common society?
Because in his head he still calls himself Terry.
Batman stopped calling himself Bruce long, long ago. It's how he defeated a psychological attack once; the voices in his head kept using the wrong name therefore they clearly couldn't originate there…

Not that surprising really; Bruce is a lazy, ignorant playboy who rides his dead father's coattails to work out deals and seems to rely on luck more than judgement in his investing policies.
Basically a complete arse.

Batman is so...interesting.

Partially because he's soooo broken and wrong as a person, but the universe keeps rewarding him for it. Sort of. And I mean, hey, there's a lot worse ways he could be broken.

I tend to identify people by their signature quotes, to be honest (which is harder when people don't have one). Actually, if you don't have a sig or an avatar, I will have difficulty remembering who you are unless you have a distinctive writing style, because I am awful with names. I genuinely have been known to forget my boyfriend's name before.

Reminds me of some D&D-themed comic where there is a warning on the wall saying "Don't overthink". The characters start pondering what the actual trap may be, overthinking in the process and eventually die from hunger and thirst.

Funny thing is, the first time I played an RPG, the GM put our party in a room with a small altar-ish stone and the same words on the far wall. We needed to proceed to the next room. Of course, we tried doing all kinds of things with the altar, until we eventually realized that we could actually...

Actually, no.  Barm=>barmy (froth on fermenting malt liquor=>frothy, slang: daft, crazy) and balm=>balmy (fragrant oil=>soothing, pleasant) are different words; however, the second spelling is now also a recognised variant for the first (both noun and adjective), which arose through confusion.
