Title: Mafia 6 Sign-Up Thread
Post by: cesium133 on 13 Mar 2013, 20:44
This game will be set in a post-apocalyptic world, after the Vampire Invasion of 2014 decimates the world population, leaving only vampires and a slim population of human survivors. Ten years after the invasion, a village of vampires have settled into their new life. The lack of humans as a source of blood has severely diminished the vampire population. The vast armies of vampires that roamed nightly in Manhattan are gone. This village survives after the discovery that bovine blood, though not as tasty as human blood, works well enough, leading to a cattle ranching industry developing. But something is wrong. It all started when young Vlad, a five-year-old vampire, disappeared from the village one day. These days the spectre of human vampire hunters is a distant memory, but... could it be happening again?

If you've read/seen the book/movie "I Am Legend", it should be fairly obvious that it inspired the story for this game.

There are two teams: the village and the humans. The villagers' goal is to survive long enough for the human invaders to be killed. The humans' goal is to kill all the vampires.

The goal is 12 players, though a couple above or below that is fine.

1. TheEvilDog
2. Unicorn
3. henri bemis
4. de_la_Nae
5. Loki
6. Linds
7. Black Sword
8. Gareth
9. J
10. dr. nervioso
11.
12.

I've just finished planning out what all the roles are going to be, but I realized something: vampires are nocturnal, which probably means that the day and night phases should be reversed...

Hey I'm all for lynching Unicorn too! This game sounds awesome unfortunately I'm going to be in Nashville and Pittsburgh for the next week so if I played I'd probably be super quiet. I'm probably going to sit this one out but if there is a real need for players I'll try to join up and chime in when I can during the trip.  I wish great fun upon everybody!

Your stick of celery doesn't seem to have a measurable effect on the creature.
Loki attacks and deals 22 damage.

Oh, I. uhm. Only got it just now. My only defense is that I pronounce steak and stake quite differently in my head. Which may be caused by the fact that I apparently have rather atrocious English pronunciation.

Oops...my celery attack was meant to target Black Sword, although I'd thought you might have got what I was getting at as well. There's a bit in Reaper Man where the wizards are trying to bury Windle (for those of you who don't know, Windle is a zombie who'd quite like it if he could finish dying) and the Bursar buys some celery instead of a stake/steak to drive through Windle's heart.

I have read the book, but I am rather hazy on such details. I consume books in a way which rarely leaves the actual content of them in my brain. The upside is, I get to enjoy Pratchett again and again :D

In response to Linds's in game comment I'd like to point out that the flavoured sparkly body powder is freaking delicious.  My girlfriend got a jar of it and she has to hide it from me to stop me from eating it right out of the jar before we can use it for its intended purpose.  It is also sparkly and might be the best thing ever invented.

That is all.

You know it occurs to me that I should ask: To what extent are players allowed to PM each other (cc-ing Cesium I'd imagine)? I know I've been doing all my playing in the thread without outside communication so far, but figured I'd check.

Title: Re: Mafia 6 Sign-Up Thread
Post by: Loki on 20 Mar 2013, 13:39
I'd like some comment on the PM situation as well, as this is only the second game I am playing (and I was a killer in the first, so I'd obviously PM with others.) There are those whom I trust, but I dare not voice some of my thoughts for everyone to hear, because that might give the killers ideas, or offend people (characters) because I would publicly suggest lynching them :-\
Title: Re: Mafia 6 Sign-Up Thread
Post by: de_la_Nae on 20 Mar 2013, 13:41
That's why I want the clarification. I can see pros and cons to allowing all players to do it.

Also I wasn't aware killers got to do that.
Title: Re: Mafia 6 Sign-Up Thread
Post by: Loki on 20 Mar 2013, 13:48
I suppose there is no harm in telling. In Mafia 5, Unicorn, Black Sword and me got a simultaneous PM basically saying we were the killers. The modus operandi was that we would come to a majority vote between ourselves, then one of us would message TheEvilDog with our decision. After Unicorn got killed, we agreed on a victim between the two of us left.

I cannot tell whether this is the case in this game, though. I assume the killers know of each other, otherwise it would be hard for them to decide on a target. Unless there are multiple factions like in Mafia.. 4? (The one with the mages and the epic battle).
Title: Re: Mafia 6 Sign-Up Thread
Post by: de_la_Nae on 20 Mar 2013, 13:59
3 I think. 4 was the Candyland Rebels game.

EDIT: Wherein I think the antagonist faction...I'm not sure whether they weren't to communicate, or simply didn't start out knowing who was who.
Title: Re: Mafia 6 Sign-Up Thread
Post by: henri bemis on 20 Mar 2013, 15:15
Unless it's stated otherwise (either in the game rules, or in a role PM), I always just assume that villagers cannot communicate via PM, and killers can.  That's they way I've always played, at least.

Yeah, sorry about that. I think I should have waited another day or so to see if anyone else wanted to play. At the time you posted here, I had already sent the role PMs, so it would have been too late to add you.
Title: Re: Mafia 6 Sign-Up Thread

Players are told who they can pm. Villagers shouldn't be pming people and roles that involve pms are told who they can talk to - be it just the gm or also another player. But really it depends on the gm. I prefer to run things as I would if we were playing in real life, meaning only pm who you're told you can.

Is Mafia the same game as Assassins? I've only played it with cards (I think Kings are cops, Aces are assassins, Queens are medics, Jacks might be something and everyone else is a townsperson)

As I understand it, PMing as a regular villager is discouraged. I can't really control it if people do it without me knowing, but if you do, keep in mind the person you're talking to might not be who they say they are.

I've never played Assassins, but the roles you mention are very close to the roles I've included in the game.

Post by: de_la_Nae on 20 Mar 2013, 22:05
So you are asking players not to communicate for gameplay purposes outside of the game, unless their roles specifically mention it?

Okay, I can do that. Means continuing what I've been doing. Thanks for clarifying though. Didn't want to miss out on a possible tool just because I was ignorant.

Post by: Method of Madness on 20 Mar 2013, 22:11
Cesium, how does one play this if not in person? I thought the whole point was trying to trick people into killing the wrong person (assuming you're the assassin), but isn't the whole challenge not to give yourself up? How does that work without the person you're trying to convince seeing you?
Title: Re: Mafia 6 Sign-Up Thread
Post by: cesium133 on 20 Mar 2013, 22:14
We're still trying to figure that out, to be honest. So far the mafia has won every game.

You need only look at how the other games have fared to see that sometimes its quite easy for the killers to win. Half the time, the villagers don't want to risk killing one of their own and the other half, they seem to go crazy.
Title: Re: Mafia 6 Sign-Up Thread
Post by: Method of Madness on 21 Mar 2013, 21:30
I wasn't saying the lack of face-to-face interaction made it easier for one side or the other, I just was wondering how such a huge part of the game being lost was compensated.
Title: Re: Mafia 6 Sign-Up Thread
Post by: TheEvilDog on 21 Mar 2013, 21:40
If anything, the lack of face to face contact actually drives up the paranoia of the games. You can see little hints in a person's face, the subconscious movements their bodies make, and its those little things that can give someone away. Here though, all you have is what a person says. There are no subtle clues to tell you if they're lying. So facing that, you can become really paranoid, especially in games where several villagers have died and none of the killers have been touched.
Title: Re: Mafia 6 Sign-Up Thread
Post by: Method of Madness on 21 Mar 2013, 21:45
I always assumed those subtle clues were the point (in that a good chunk of the fun is trying to read people to see if they're hiding something), but I suppose one's mileage/kilometrage* may vary.

*Probably not a word.

Title: Re: Mafia 6 Sign-Up Thread
Post by: Game and Watch Forever on 22 Mar 2013, 09:31
No I can't, which is part of the problem. I think there's a fine difference between bloodlust and being willing to break a couple of eggs to make a good omelette. Maybe if more people were on board with that idea, there'd be less hesitance against actually lynching suspects from the get-go.

And now for some reason I feel like I'm using that omelette idiom incorrectly.  :psyduck:

@Cesium - I'm trying to post my thoughts about mafia in general without actively influencing this specific game in any way. Yell at me if you think I cross the line at any point and I'll correct accordingly. Or shut up altogether until game end.

This reminds me: it might also be best to start with a clean slate every time instead of pointing fingers at people who used to be a bad guy. I made jokes about Gareth desecrating my body from the horror game and you were attacking me based on my being the werewolf king a long time ago. It's largely irrelevant and I see it happen in almost all of our games. Maybe we should try not doing that either and just look at what we're given.
Title: Re: Mafia 6 Sign-Up Thread

Especially since it might make people who weren't in older games feel left out.
Title: Re: Mafia 6 Sign-Up Thread

you were attacking me based on my being the werewolf king a long time ago.

See, that one went completely over my head. Had I known this, I might have been not so quick to lynch J, because now I could only assume they were "spouting nonsense" and accusing Linds out of nowhere.

So I am completely in favor of starting with a clean slate (otherwise I would already be lynched as the sole survivor of the last game.) We should still be able to make judgments on people based on their argumentation style from past games, though (ie: "X is usually level-headed and not quick with lynchings. I wonder what makes them accuse everyone left and right this time.") Such trails of thought have the "advantage" of being ambiguous, because hey, they might be just trying a new "character".

I agree with Linds, BTW, I think at least half of the suspicion against me is based on the previous games, which given that I play a new character every game was kind of annoying me. I deliberately roleplay in some way in these things, I don't really play as 'Gareth.'
